Crosswinds Boating Center 565 Farrington Rd, Apex, NC 27523 Boat rental info: If you’d like to boat on Jordan Lake, the nearby, privately-owned Crosswinds Boating Center offers rentals on single kayaks, tandem kayaks, and stand-up paddle boards all for $25 for 2 hours. They also offer rentals on pontoon boats. However, different pontoon boats have different prices. The price range to rent a pontoon boat for 2 hours on weekdays (MON-THUR) is $115-$130, the price range for 4 hours on weekdays is $160-$225. Boat Rentals

Boat rental at Lake Crabtree County Park is open, as conditions permit:

Weekends and Holidays ONLY (see schedule below) 10 a.m.–6 p.m.  Rentals stop at 5 p.m.

• Friday–Sunday (June 7–August 2)

All rentals are FREE for 2 hours, and require a valid photo ID to rent. All rentals are on a first-come, first-serve basis and cannot be reserved in advance. Life vests and paddles are provided.  Available for rent:

• Single Kayaks

• Pedal Boats  

Customers must be at least 18 years of age, or 16 years of age accompanied by a parent or guardian on site to sign the release form. As a reminder, visitors are always welcome to launch their own boats at locations indicated in the park. See the “Public Boat Launching” section below.

Fishing is a popular pastime at Lake Crabtree County Park. A fishing pier and platform provide handicap accessibility. Fishing is permitted in designated areas only. The park offers a Tackle Loaner Program through the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission . Visit the Park Office Monday-Thursday or the Boat Rental Facility Friday-Sunday to ask about the Tackle Loaner Program. All participants must have a valid fishing license, provide their own bait, and return fishing equipment to the either the place you checked it out or the locker behind the park office if there are no staff available to process the return.

Any person 16 and older fishing in public waters MUST have a fishing license. Children under 16 years of age must be with a licensed adult to fish.

PCB Information and Fishing Advisory In mid-May 2004, Lake Crabtree County Park was notified of elevated levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the fish. Since this time, a North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NC DHHS)  fish consumption advisory  has been in effect.

Wake County has a  catch-and-release-only  policy at Lake Crabtree and Crabtree Creek. The following documents contain information on Wake County's policy:

Public Boat Launching

Lake Crabtree is ideal for water sports like paddling, sailing and rowing. The park offers accessible, year-round public boat launch areas, including a two-lane ramp for trailered craft and car-top launch areas. Only non-gasoline-powered motors are allowed.

Year 1956 | Acres 800 (650 acres of lake and 150 acres of park and land buffer)

Constructed in 1956 with the aid of the Army Corps of Engineers, Lake Wheeler once served as Raleigh's secondary auxiliary water-supply lake.

Beginning in 2010, Lake Wheeler was reinstated as a primary water supply for Raleigh and surrounding Wake County communities and feeds water to the Dempsey Benton Water Treatment Plant.

Accessibility Lake Wheeler has an assortment of accessible amenities in the park.  See our park map for general wayfinding and facility locations. 

Parking Lake Wheeler has 4 accessible parking spaces located in the parking lot above the waterfront center. 2 are near the Magnolia Shelter and 2 are near the sidewalk to the Accessible Fishing Dock.  There are an additional 2 accessible parking spaces located just off the road leading down to the boat ramps and launch area. 

Access to the Waterfront Center The accessible entrance to the Waterfront Center is located on the road leading down to the boat ramps and launch area.  A ramp leads patrons directly to the park office. 

Restroom Facilities and Lake Overlook Restrooms with accessible features are located at the Waterfront Center.  The deck and veranda provide a covered area to enjoy the view of Lake Wheeler. 

Accessible Fishing Dock The accessible fishing dock is located on the east side of the parking lot above the waterfront center.  A sidewalk leads you down to the water’s edge where the dock is located.

Boating Opportunities

Boat Rentals are now available through a third party vender Wake Rack. Kayaks and Stand Up Paddleboards (SUPs) are located near the Waterfront Center in lockers. Reserve Equipment Online

Lake Wheeler Park will also have programmatic opportunities this summer to get you on the water. Program offerings will provide boating equipment to patrons for each activity. Boat offerings include basic lessons and tours of the lake.  Please visit raleighnc.gov/reclink to view and register for paddling programs.

Personal Boat Launches

Hours:   Permissible during park hours with purchase of launch fee. Boats must be off the water 30 minutes prior to sunset or park closing time.

• Boats (trailered and non-trailered) are allowed to launch into Lake Wheeler with the purchase of a daily or annual launch pass.
• Motorized boats are allowed with the exception of personal water crafts (PWC), a term used for “Jet Ski”–type boats.
• Watersport activities such as skiing and tubing are allowed; however, the act of swimming is not.

Launch Fees

As of July 1, 2022 new fee rates will be in place. 

• City residents: $5/day
• Non-residents: $7/day
• Senior (age 55+): $3/day 
• Annual rates: city residents $125, non-residents $175, senior citizens $75

Boating Policies

• All boats must travel in a counter-clockwise pattern.
• The speed limit is 40 mph on the lake.
• No swimming from personal boats.
• Adhere to all no-wake markers found on the body of Lake Wheeler.
• No-wake hours are in effect for the entire lake on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays until 11 a.m.
• Beginning July 1, 2024, fishing permit fees will no longer be charged to fish at Lake Wheeler Park. 
• All visitors fishing must have a current North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) fishing license.  Learn more about obtaining a fishing license.
• Fishing is allowed on the two designated piers and on the shoreline of Simpkins Pond only. Bank fishing is not allowed on Lake Wheeler shorelines.
• Stop by the park office and find out about the Rod and Reel Tackle Loaner program. 

Lake Wheeler Fishing Trail

Marked by designated buoys, the trail consists of 11 sites: 3 for summer and winter fishing 4 for pre- and post-spawn fishing, and 4 for year-round fishing.  See the poster for details.

Bryan and his team were wonderful! Very communicative, knowledgeable and accommodating! We had one person on the vessel that didn’t know how to swim and wasn’t very able bodied and they were able to assist us in a safe and fun time for all. They were flexible and helped us plan the best route, and made the best use of our 4 hours. We were able to see some mansions, got a couple of ours to ourselves on a more private island, and then enjoyed a pit stop at cocktail cove for ice cream! This was such a great experience for my diverse group of ladies between the ages of 19 and 65 for my Bachelorette weekend, 19 out of 10, because 5 stars is not enough! We will definitely use your services again! Thank you for helping me, my friends and family create memories we will cherish for a lifetime!

Here at Aquaholics Boat Rentals LLC, we have a total of 6 boats from Eastern NC’s largest boat dealer, Chatlee. All of our boats come equipped with U.S. Coast Guard approved safety equipment, life vests for all passengers, flotation device, emergency flares, and a fire extinguisher, as well as an anchor.

They also have the following comfort amenities that you may find enjoyable. The Garmin GPS system not only has pre-marked popular spots on the waterways, but if you get turned around, it will show you how to get back to the main channel or back to our docks. There’s also a JBS Bluetooth sound system with an auxiliary cord.

While we want our customers to enjoy their time out on the water, we do not condone excessive drinking while operating a vessel. The driver of the boat must return to the docks UNDER the legal alcohol limit. Keep in mind if there are any incidents, marine patrol will administer tests while on the water and the customer is fully liable and responsible upon departure from our docks until the vessel is returned.

Great time on the ICW and Topsail Sound! Great customer service and excellent pontoon boat that made everything so easy. Parked the car and got in the boat with no wait. Left the boat 5 hours later with no concerns —- just got out on the dock and tipped the dock hand and told him we had a great time!! Will do it agin for sure!!
