Time has stood still on the serene backwaters of Kerala. The meandering canals and the silent water channels mark a course spanning 900 km across the length and breadth of Kerala.

One of the best ways to experience the region is by staying in a houseboat (check out my post on cruising the backwaters of Kerala ).

There are loads of houseboats on the Kerala Backwaters to choose from but not all are made equal. So it’s really important to carefully research which houseboat in Kerala you will be going on to make sure you get the best experience on the backwaters – one of my highlights of all India!

How to find Backwater Houseboats in Alleppey, Kerala

The most popular place to board a houseboat on the Kerala Backwaters is Alleppey (Alappuzha) but there are also other places where you can board, like Kumarakom.

When I first went on the Kerala backwaters in 2013 you had to go to Alleppey and haggle with the touts to get a houseboat and it was always a bit of a gamble whether you would get a decent boat at a decent rate.

Luckily now there are some houseboats that you can book in advance online on Booking.com so you can check out photos and reviews beforehand and you don’t have to haggle over price which makes it much easier and less stressful! 🙂

Alleppey offers an excellent choice of houseboats overall. It’s an amazing town with beaches, temples, and wellness centres.

Kumarakom, on the other hand, is perfect for those who’d like a glimpse of the mangrove forests, the paddy fields, and the coconut groves and it is also home to some incredible luxury resorts.

The pricing of the houseboats will depend on factors such as the size of the boat, the facilities on offer, and the packages you choose. Most of the time, the meals will be a part of the 24-hour stay package.

Some of the best houseboats on the Kerala Backwaters also include a trip in a smaller boat or canoe which allows you to get down smaller canals and get closer to the local life, an experience I really recommend.

Hiring a houseboat on the Kerala backwaters is often one of the most expensive things you can do in India but there are lots of different options so even backpackers and budget travellers don’t have to miss out on what is one of India’s most beautiful, peaceful and serene experiences.

Kerala houseboats start at about 2,000 INR per person per night but, as with anything, if you can afford to pay a little more it’s often worth it for better facilities and a better experience.

Not much beats cruising along in your own private houseboat on the Kerala backwaters. Some canals can get quite busy with houseboats in the peak season but the more expensive ones are also more likely to get away from the crowds.

Also, its good to be aware that most boats only offer air-conditioning from 9 PM – 6 AM only and hot water hours may be limited too.

Symphony Cruise Houseboat is consistently ranked amongst the top houseboats on the Kerala backwaters for the superb service and experience they offer. It’s a great option to choose considering the spectacular views that the rooms offer.

The houseboats are docked about 2 km away from the Nehru Trophy Boat Race and about 6 km from the Alleppey Lighthouse. The houseboats have a restaurant that serves Indian cuisine so you can relish some exotic delicacies straight from the Kerala kitchens!

The staff can also arrange fishing. The rooms are air-conditioned and equipped with clean bathrooms. Another bonus is that there is free car parking provided.

Midrange: Friends Cruise, Punnamada Road, Alleppey

Friends Cruise is another recommendation Kerala houseboat. All rooms on the boats are super clean with private bathrooms, fully air-conditioned and are complete with all modern amenities and lake-views.

The evening dinner by the waters is an experience to be cherished! You can get in touch with the staff if you wish to enjoy fishing or canoeing in the surrounding waters.

Luxury: Xandari Riverscapes, Pallathuruthy Bridge, Alleppey

You may have seen, admired and experienced some of the captivating sights on land in God's Own Country. For those who are on the lookout for a new experience, a change from their tryst with land while in Kerala, why not opt for an experience on the turquoise waters of the Arabian Sea. And to make it happen, get on board one of the elegant yachts operated by 'The Malabar Yacht Club' located at Mattancherry in Kochi. Called Gazelles, the yachts and the facilities at the club are being promoted by the Kondo Syokai Group, who is credited with operating the first yacht charter in India. Each yacht is manned by a crew of two and can accommodate six sleeping guests comfortably. The yachts also feature facilities like toilet, shower and galley. The yacht club currently offers sailing holidays in India, in the Lakshadweep Islands and in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The sailing options from Kochi includes coastal sailing, which is day sailing in and around the costal waters of Kochi. During the cruise, guests on board can enjoy waterside views of Mattancherry, Fort Kochi, Bolghatty Island, Vypeen Island and the array of Chinese fishing nets and can enjoy the company of dolphins by the side of the boat. The waters off the coast offer ideal conditions for swimming and obviously one can relax and can bite into some of the food delights served on board. As part of its sailing holidays in India, the yacht club does coastal sailing trips from Kochi with overnight sail to Cherai and Marari beaches. The 'Gazelles' set sail from Kochi early morning and drop anchor off the beaches before evening. With lunch on board the evening meal would take the form of a beach barbeque. Guests can sleep overnight on the yacht and after breakfast the next day, sail back to Kochi. On request, longer duration of sails is also offered by the yacht club. Sailing to the mesmerizing coral islands of Lakshadweep and also to the breathtaking Andamans and Nicobar Islands are other options offered by the yacht club to its guests. Feel the wind in your hair, relax to the lullaby of the waves or else take in the inspiring sights of coastal Kerala, while you stay afloat on the Gazelles. Nehru Trophy Boat Race: Know more about 19 teams vying for top spot this year

Alappuzha: The much-awaited Nehru Trophy Boat Race will thrill the calm waters of the Punnamada Lake on September 28. Meanwhile, the boat samitis and clubs are busy with the last-minute preparations for the annual regatta. Each boat club will be vying for the legendary Nehru Trophy signed by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. From some iconic clubs as old as the boat race to new clubs and teams, 19 snake boats will be participating in the race this year. Interestingly, out of the 19 teams, five would compete in their own snakeboats. Apart from a few boats, all others have started training weeks ago. Besides, the rowers got enough practice as they participated in back-to-back competitions during the Onam season. If you plan to watch this annual regatta, here is a short history of some of the iconic boat clubs that made the Nehru Trophy race famous.

Pallathuruthy boat club The Pallathuruthy Boat Club(PBC) will create a unique record in the history of Nehru Trophy if they win the cup this year. The team has been the winners for the last four years and if they raise the trophy this week, then it will be their fifth consecutive win. Only PBC and Kumarakam Boat Club (2004 – 07) have been able to register four consecutive wins until now. PBC won the trophy from 2018 to 2023. The boat race was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. The grand old boat club have won the Nehru Trophy six times. Interestingly, this year, the club would be helming the Karichal chundan that boasts of an impressive record of 15 title wins. Besides, the club has won all three CBL seasons, too. The skippers of the boat are Alan Moonnuthaikkal and Aiden Moonnuthaikkal.

UBC Kainakari With 12 Nehru Trophy wins in their kitty, UBC Kainakary is the club that has won the most number of times. Even though the boat club has a strong fan base, they have not been able to win a trophy in recent years. Meanwhile, the club has won two hattricks in 1963, 64 and 65 as well as in 1989, 90 and 91. Besides, they were winners in 1968, 70, 76, 79, 93 and 2014. In the second season of CBL, the club won four races to bag the second place. UBC Kainakary will be rowing the Thalavady chundan that is just two years old. The captain of the boat is Padmakumar Puthenparambil.

Village Boat Club, Kainakary The Village Boat Club that has won the Nehru Trophy in 1986 and 87 on the iconic Karichal snake boat would be competing to reclaim their old reputation. The team that was absent from the boat race after 1988 made a comeback in 2022. The team would be rowing the Veeyapuram chundan that won the Nehru Trophy and CBL title last year. PV Mathew Pawothil is the skipper of the boat.

Kumarakam Town Boat Club The boat club that was formed in 1971 has made their mark on the race tracks in Punnamada many times. They have won the Nehru trophy six times including the four consecutive wins in 2004, 05, 06 and 07. They raised the trophy in 1999 and 2010 and had finished second in the last two years. This year, the Kumarakam Boat Club will be competing in the Nadubhagam chundan that holds the record for entering the finals most number of times. Nadubhagam snake boat won the second place in 2022 and finished third in 2023. Sudheesh Nandi Kannanthara will helm the boat during the race.

Punnamada Boat Club The Punnamada Boat Club, which was formed in 2006, had initially competed in the veppu category. They won the Nehru Trophy in the veppu A grade category in 2008, 09 and 10. In 2022, the club rowed a snake boat for the first time and came fourth in Veeyapuram boat. Besides, the club has also participated in the three seasons of the CBL. This year, the club rows Chambakkulam chundan that has won the Nehru Trophy an impressive eight times including two hattricks. Meanwhile, the skipper of the boat is Santhosh T Kuruvila.

Alappuzha Town Boat Club The Alappuzha Town Boat Club began this season with two major wins at the Chambakkulam Moolam boat race and Karumadi boat race. The team is all set to repeat their winning streak at the Nehru Trophy too. The club formed in 1992 has won the Nehru Trophy four times and had qualified for the finals 11 times. They won the trophy in 1994, 95, 96 and 2000. In 1994, the team competed as Jet Airways Boat Club, missing their chance to win a hattrick. This year, the club would be rowing the Puthen chundan, a predecessor of the legendary Payipadan chundan that won the Nehru Trophy four times including a hattrick in 2005, 06 and 07. Jose Arathumpally is the captain of the boat.

Jesus Boat Club (Anari boat samiti) The Jesus Boat Club backed out of the race due to financial struggle when the Nehru Trophy was postponed. Now, the Anari boat samiti will be competing as Jesus Boat Club. Interestingly, the Anari boat samiti will be debuting in the Nehru Trophy as a club. Jesus Boat Club’s best performance in Nehru Trophy was in 2012 when they finished second.

Wonderful houseboat experience. Reasonably priced. The houseboat was neat and clean and well maintained. The food was so yum and indeed the Best Houseboats in Alleppey. They were gracious enough to let us check in early due to the Nationwide strike for which I would be grateful forever.

It was my family's first ever experience of houseboat and didn't expect it to be so awesome. Alleppey Houseboats cruise started on time and its your little house on water. Boat was neat and clean and so were the rooms. All the facilities were provided as mentioned while booking. As far as crew is concerned, their hospitality won our hearts. They were polite and prompt. Food was delicious.

Best hospitality with amazing food and cleanliness was great. Suggestion as per me is to have a bit long ride on Alleppey Houseboats as in our 21 hours of stay boat was on running for 4 hours only rest 17 hours it was parked on the bank. Which feels like waste of money.

Had an amazing time on this boat with my family, the staff were very respectful and cooperative, the food served was very delicious and hygienic. The boat was well maintained and clean. Of the many trips on the backwaters I have had, I would rate this one my best trip. Overall awesome experience. I strongly recommend Waves and Dales company. Thanks guys and keep it up. I have stayed on a house boat before so nothing to compare to but we loved it! It’s you, the captain, the driver and the cook. The silence, meditation, scenery is beautiful. Just relax and enjoy. Food was delicious! Two adults and two kids of 8 and 11 having a blast.

We saw on here that people felt that the short canoe ride required to get to the property was a negative, but it added fun to the trip for us. Staff were friendly and very helpful. Breakfast delivered to our veranda outside room was ample. Room wasn't huge, but worked for the one night we needed it for. Lovely spot on the river.
