Other details, construction.

Cored hull with closed cell P.V.C. sandwich core used in the hull. End grained balsa-cored superstructure, pilothouse and boat deck. Core mat is also used to reduce print-through. Vinylester resin used in first two laminates below the waterline. Marine plywood bulkheads. Mahogany stringers and frames.

The saloon is entered through large double doors off the fully covered aft deck. To starboard is an L-shaped leather settee with hydraulic dining table (seats 8) and a large window for natural light. To port is a larger L-shaped settee with built in end tables and a comfortable Ekornes Stressless chair and ottoman. There are teak valances with concealed lightening and decorator mini-blinds throughout the saloon. There is a Phantom screen for the double aft doors to let the breezes in while keeping the bugs out. For entertainment there is a 50" flat panel HDTV. A custom designed privacy door separate the saloon/galley from the rest of the boat.

The open concept galley is on the starboard side just forward of the spacious saloon/dining area and is separated from the saloon/dining area by a large counter with beautiful updated granite. The galley is a convenient U-shaped with a large window for natural light. There is an abundance of storage with multiple lockers and drawers capable of holding all those special pots and pans the connoisseur boating chef requires.

Master Stateroom

The master stateroom on the Whaleback is self contained with full bedroom and en-suite head. It is located forward featuring an island household sized queen berth with storage under the mattress. Storage is provided by two full length lit double-railed lockers with built in shelves and deadlight windows in each locker. There are two vanity units with multiple drawers. One vanity features a lit full size mirror with a concealed pull-up make-up compartment. Four opening ports and two large overhead hatches as well as two smaller hatches provide an abundant amount of light and ventilation. 

Master Ensuite Head

The over-sized ensuite features a beautiful updated granite countertop with porcelain undermount sink, overhead mirrored medicine cabinet and extra vanity storage and a large stall shower with a molded fiberglass seat. The head has a tiled floor and Royal Flush toilet plus plenty of storage in the floor to ceiling locker. An opening port allows light and ventilation.

Guest Staterooms

There are two guest staterooms on the Whaleback. The first is to port and includes a large L-shaped settee converting to a full double bed with Pullman berth overhead, 2 reading wall sconces, hanging locker and multiple storage drawers under the settee. The main feature is a large working desk with ample built-in overhead shelving and multiple drawers/ filing drawer. There is a large window with miniblinds and an opening port with Oceanair shade.

The other guest stateroom is to starboard and features a settee converting to a single berth and an overhead Pullman berth and 2 overhead reading wall sconces. There is also a working desk with wrap around shelving, hanging locker and an opening port.

The guest head is located aft of the starboard guest stateroom. It has a large stall shower, updated granite countertop with porcelain undermount sink, mirrored medicine cabinet, tile floor, Royal Head and an opening port. Plenty of locker space is under the vanity and in the additional locker overhead. For a laundry aboard, a separate cabinet outside the head houses a Frigidaire Heavy Duty stack washer/ dryer.

The pilothouse on the Whaleback is not just a helm but rather a whole other living room both underway and when on the hook or at the dock. It is accessed from either the circular stairs just forward of the port guest stateroom or from the aft deck you can go up and across the boat deck. There is true 360 degree visibility from the Captain's Stidd helm chair. The helm has a large chart reading area with multiple chart drawers and locker space below. Access to the Portuguese bridge via port and starboard Dutch doors. There is a large L-shaped convertible settee with dining table that sits 6 that converts into a double berth by night. Abundant storage exists under the settee. There is a wet bar with sink, insulated ice box for ice/drinks, and an additional custom built cabinet along with an ice maker. There are fishing rod holders mounted to the overhead. To announce your arrival/departure: Kahlenburg air horns and a vintage brass air whistle!

OLYMPIA is hull #5 of this go anywhere, anytime series of personal size Long Range cruising yachts from the venerable builder, Kadey-Krogen. She proved her capabilities “right out of the box” so to speak, on her maiden voyage at the hands of her delivery crew from Stuart, FL, up the East Coast to her new owner. Hull construction includes use of USA made, Cook gel coat. Hand-laid Knytex fiberglass construction with closed-cell PVC sandwich core used in topsides. OLYMPIA's spacious boat deck is enclosed by sturdy stainless-steel railings. The railings adjacent to the tender were milled to come off in 3 sections to allow for ease of launching and retrieving the tender. In addition to the tender and crane, the boat deck features a siding hatch for ease of descent to the cockpit, movable steps to access the pilothouse roof and a full-size BBQ grill flanked by a covered sink with hot and cold running water. Storage is provided in a large port side locker, a midships locker that holds 2 aluminum propane tanks and 2 door cabinet under the grill. There is also a place on the aft railing for a large flag.

The airy master stateroom features a queen-size island berth which can be raised on gas struts to accommodate large possessions. Two hanging lockers, 2 chest of drawers, and 4 large drawers under the bed provide an abundance of storage. Sliding Ocean-Air hatches above the bed provide breezes while at anchor as do 4 large port lights. The ensuite head features a full-size shower with adjustable shower head and sliding door, a granite covered vanity, a mirrored cabinet, and designer lighting over the sink.

The guest stateroom features 2 Sunbrella covered twin beds, each with generous storage both under mattresses and in a bank of 5 large drawers under each bed. A hanging locker complete with a cabinet running the full-width of the room holds bedding and a myriad of other belongings. Behind the door is a stacked full-size Bosch washer and dryer. A desk and bookshelves add to the functionality of the room. A door leads down to the walk-in engine room.

Across the companionway is a large guest head complete with a full-size shower, long granite covered vanity, double mirror and additional storage above the head and under the vanity. Non-operating port lights provide light throughout the entire stateroom area even on rainy days.

Designing a yacht intended to explore the world’s oceans is no easy feat. Every seasoned yachtsman will eventually be told that “all boats are a compromise.” At Kadey-Krogen, we view that opinion as simply giving up and not trying hard enough. For more than 45 years we have proven that it is possible to have an efficient hull design, extreme comfort while under passage and in port, all with a design that is pleasing to the eye. Coupling all of these elements together is certainly not easy, especially when you choose to build each and every 58 without compromise.

Krogen 58 Design & Engineering

Like all Kadey-Krogen models, the 58 seamlessly blends design, systems, and comforts. And we don’t see these as autonomous endeavors. For example, on a passagemaker it is preferred that the living quarters that will see significant use while on passage are concentrated in the most comfortable portion of the boat should heavy weather be encountered. Performance is enhanced with the use of Kadey-Krogen’s proprietary Pure Full Displacement hull which reduces drag, improves fuel efficiency and provides a smooth ride through the waves. The hull is also reinforced with a “bullet-proof” Twaron fiberglass mat for increased safety when steering this yacht through rougher seas. Powered by dual 231 HP Tier III John Deere engines, these yachts can reach comfortable, long-range cruising speeds of up to 11 knots, while at 7 knots the vessel has a range of around 5,300 miles. From the fiberglass swimplatform, you enter the hardtop covered aftdeck via the transom door. You then walk through double teak & glass doors into the salon, where you will find an entertainment/storage cabinet port aft, wrap-around seating with storage port forward, wrap-around seating with storage and a double pedestal folding teak table starboard aft, engine room access and galley starboard forward. Walk forward in the companionway to find the guest head with enclosed shower to starboard, guest stateroom to port another guest stateroom starboard forward and the master stateroom all the way forward. The steps to the pilothouse are port forward. The pilothouse has a side deck access door on each side to reach the Portuguese Bridge, foredeck and tender deck. Engine room access is via salon sole hatches.

The headroom in the salon is 6'6", 6'7" to 7'4" in the master stateroom, 6'6" in the master stateroom shower, 7' in the starboard guest stateroom, 6'8" in the port guest stateroom, 6'4" in the guest shower, 6'8" in the galley and 6'8" on the aftdeck.
