Irwin 28 Sailboat Review
The Irwin 28 was offered with both tiller and pedestal wheel steering. My personal boat has the tiller, so my review is based only on that perspective. I personally love the direct feel and sensitivity of a tiller. The simplicity of the setup is also reassuring.

It takes into consideration "reported" sail area, displacement and length at waterline. The higher the number the faster speed prediction for the boat. A cat with a number 0.6 is likely to sail 6kts in 10kts wind, a cat with a number of 0.7 is likely to sail at 7kts in 10kts wind. KSP = (Lwl*SA÷D)^0.5*0.5

Catalina 27 vs. Irwin 28
I had an Irwin 32 for 12 years. I sailed aboard a Catalina 27 for a week. the Irwin 28 is not a 32. I liked my 32 much more, but the Cat was a good boat. Neither boat is going to be a rocket. You are not going to notice the difference in performance unless you are a PHRF guy. Both are coastal cruisers with construction limitations.

Offshore in an irwin 28?
If I wasn't given my current boat, I would have never given Irwin's another chance! The build quality on my current 1974 full keel Irwin 28 is nothing like my first Irwin. I've been in large waves, heavy weather, and high winds - she stays true to coarse, plows solidly through waves, keeps the family comfortable, and is an overall joy to sail!

The Pearson 27 (1988+) is a 27-foot scaled down version of the 28-2. It replaces the V-berth with a small storage area. The dinette table can drop to fill the settee space with a large double berth. It has a wing keel (the 28-2 has a fin or shoal keel) and looks like a nicely outfit boat.
