How Are Horizon Yachts Built?

Each Horizon motor yacht is constructed using the most advanced composites technology. Horizon uses a vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) process that incorporates the most advanced technologies and processes, from resin research & development and materials testing to one-shot 6D hull infusion and aerospace-grade non-destructive testing (NDT) methods – to ensure the most lightweight, durable and uncompromised hulls and superstructures possible. How Long is the Build Process?

Each Horizon yacht model offers a variety of layouts, designs and options for personal customization, which will determine the length of the build process. Horizon's experienced in-house naval architects, engineers and interior designers collaborate with each client to tailor the yacht to the client's preferences. Horizon believes in the spirit of collaboration, which provides the client the creative, hands-on ability to develop a yacht that is a reflection of the client and the client's lifestyle. Can Horizon Yachts Build to Classification?

Horizon yachts can be built to DNV, BV and RINA with MCA compliance as required by owner. Horizon also builds to CE certification for European builds, NK for Japanese builds, and ABYC guidelines are followed for US builds as standard. Horizon Yachts is Building with Advanced Tech Innovations

Horizon Yachts has delivered more than 910 yachts worldwide in 36 years. It is one of the 10 largest yacht builders in the world. The company has four specialized shipyards and employs 800 people—and, in the past four years, has taken dramatic steps to “rebuild.”

Horizon’s CEO, John Lu, added seven new bays for fitting out hulls, allowing for approximately 15 yachts to be under construction at any given time. This system eliminates the need to move hulls from one shed to another, saving time. Other upgrades include a 3D printer, a precision five-axis router and a cafeteria. A 1,000-ton ship lift is in the works too.

Investing upward of $30 million on all these changes during the pandemic may have seemed risky, but Lu was simply going ahead with previously laid plans.

“The first six months, everything stopped,” he says. “Six months after, everything was booming.”

As a result, Horizon emerged from the pandemic as an even more viable force in the yachting marketplace. Its subsidiary Atech Composites produces all of the hulls, decks and superstructures for every Horizon yacht. Founded in 2000, Atech is Asia’s premier builder of large-scale fiber-reinforced plastic, with other customers in aviation, transportation and wind-farm components. It built pieces of the Great Harbor Bridge, the first horizontally rotating landscape bridge in Taiwan.

For Horizon, Atech is responsible for a number of  advancements in yacht construction. One of them is called 6D resin-infusion technology. In the past, resin infusion was a 3D process that let the resin flow up and down internal stiffeners, creating large fiberglass hulls. The 6D process adds 3D structural fiber cloth to the 3D resin process, guaranteeing even resin distribution around corners, over integrated stringers and throughout the laminate. The end result is lighter, stronger hulls that Horizon can now build in any length in a single shot. Atech’s largest hull to date with this process is a 140-footer with girders and framing.

Prior to any infusion, the component plug has to be laid out with fiberglass sheets, cut to size, and oriented by the glass direction. This is a manual yet methodical process performed by craftsmen, who demonstrated their skills during my visit, setting up stations to show the types of fiber weaves, the flow of resin through the various weaves (thicker cloths took longer), and the ability to use the proper fiber in the right areas. One interesting assurance measure Atech performs is 3D profile measuring, or reality capture. This process creates a 3D model from laser scans, then compares the finished product’s scan to the blueprints to ensure proper profile dimensions.

Other Atech developments include low-shrinkage resin solutions such as Hyver, which results in smoother surfaces; the orientation and type of fiber fabrics for strength in high-load areas; and infrared thermography to measure temperature differences. With environmental stewardship in mind, Atech says, the resin-infusion process reduces volatile organic compounds emissions by almost 80 percent.

Once a Horizon Yachts hull is created, most of the components are sourced internally. During my time at the shipyard, I viewed many yachts in production, as well as an array of  new models in the water and the Horizon City Marina. This year, Horizon Yachts introduced the FD90, two FD80 models and the V77 cockpit motoryacht, which is tricked out for fishing.

Horizon’s team hinted that there might even be a 130-plus-footer in the future. And the builder has partnered with Lexus to build the next iteration of its yacht, the LY680.  

Setting Standards

The Atech Composites lab’s responsibilities include quality assurance and advanced technology development. Incoming raw materials are tested to ensure proper specifications. Random testing throughout the construction line is performed as well. Advanced development teams test for mechanical resin flow, weather resistance, fire retardant, discoloration and more.

Tools of the Trade

Horizon’s Atech lab uses viscosity meters and thermostatic baths to ensure proper construction. Moisture meters, Barcol hardness testers (which measure the hardness of components) and color spectrum meters are utilized too. Tensile testing checks the breaking point of key components.

Detect and Repair

As part of the inspection process, nondestructive testing is performed on every critical area to identify defects by analyzing strain under loads. Utilizing laser lights and CCD cameras as part of the shearography system, the builder looks for disbanding, dry spots, voids and other defects.

2024 Horizon V74

The brand new Horizon V74 joins the Horizon V Series of luxury performance motor yacht models.

Distinguished by a plumb bow design and bold exterior profile by Stimson Yachts and a voluminous interior layout, the first V74 has been customized for the Australian market. An evolution of the V68 model – which promises a well-planned layout with superyacht-esque amenities for owner/operators – the new V74 features an enclosed skylounge configuration and spacious four-stateroom layout.

Folding doors lead from the main deck aft into the main salon, while a fold-up window to starboard creates a pass-through between the salon’s wet bar and the aft deck. Here, wraparound side decks give access to the foredeck relaxation area with its dinette and loungers. Throughout the interior, a light Acacia satin wood floor is complemented by natural tones, white and light grey finishes, and large windows for a calm and bright atmosphere.

A large galley with a center island bar and U-shaped dinette under the forward windows occupies the forward section of the main deck. This raised country kitchen-style space is well equipped with the latest appliances, plentiful storage and large counter space topped with Michelangelo marble stone. A floating staircase to port leads to the enclosed skylounge and wheelhouse above.

In the skylounge, twin black leather helm chairs face the helm console that utilizes the Garmin Navigation system and controls the CAT C18A 1,136hp engines and 22.5kW Onan gensets. A U-shaped settee with a Hi/Lo dinette faces the pop-up television console, and a dayhead is situated aft to port. The hardtop overhang protects the full bar and L-shaped seating area on the boat deck aft, while the tender is stowed furthest aft.

Four staterooms are positioned on the lower deck of the new V74, and comprise a full-beam master with ensuite, bunk and convertible twins and a forward VIP. A beach club with lounge seating and a wet bar accesses the yacht’s extended 450kg capacity Hi/Lo swim platform.

The V74 is market-leading in terms of overall volume, a breakthrough in style and functionality and offers an intelligent layout and a modern take on a classic design.

41m Horizon motor yacht Homecoming newly listed for sale

The 41.4-metre Horizon motor yacht Homecoming has been newly listed for sale with John Slate and Nellie Horvath of Northrop & Johnson .

Delivered by the Taiwanese shipyard in 2010, the custom-built yacht marks the fifth hull in Horizon’s Premier Series and has had two owners and no charter history. Exterior design is the work of Espinosa Yacht Design , while naval architecture and interior design were handled in-house.

The tri-deck accommodates 12 guests across six cabins, including a main-deck master suite with a king-size bed, his-and-hers baths, a large central shower, a Jacuzzi tub and an adjoining sitting room/office. Meanwhile, the VIP suite with a king berth is found on the lower deck along with two singles and two cabins with queen berths.

Dark premium wood, marble surfaces and hand-woven carpets create a timeless interior, brought to life by a circular staircase with a skylight amidships. On the main deck, guests can benefit from the formal dining room for 10 and an expansive saloon with a full-service bar. Meanwhile, a large table for al fresco dining and a built-in sofa feature on the wide aft deck.

Up top, the upper deck is comprised of a forward helm, captain's suite and skylounge that opens onto a spacious aft deck. The flybridge features everything from a custom helm, outdoor galley, seating area, full bath, sauna, sunpad and infinity-edge Jacuzzi.

The spacious bow area and swim platform provide easy access to the water.

The yacht for sale is powered by MTU 8V 4000 M70 1550 hp diesel engines, and she cruises  at 10.5 knots and reaches a top speed of 16.5 knots. Her stability is ensured by large fin stabilizers, American Bow Thruster bow and stern thrusters, and five-blade ZF bronze propellers.

Homecoming is asking $7,995,000.
