‍ Buying a sailboat can be expensive, but building your own can save you money. So what are sailboats you can build from home?

Sailboats that you can build from home will likely be a small boat under 20 feet. These could be from many different boat suppliers such as B&B Yachts, Brooks Boat Designs, and Chase Small Craft. Boat plans will vary based on your budget and how much time you have on your hands.

Based on my previous experience, building your own boat will take much longer than if a professional were to do it. You also have to be able to study plans, consider various sailboat designs, and have tons of supplies such as fiberglass tape or fiberglass cloth. On top of that, you will also have to be good with your hands.

How Much Does it Cost to Build a Sailboat at Home?

As you have likely already done so, the math between building your own boat and buying one may be a huge difference. Likewise, you may even enjoy the challenge of taking an older boat that is gutted and restoring with parts from a kit to build one new again.

But how much does it cost exactly to build a boat from the comfort of your own garage or workshop? The prices are going to vary dramatically depending on your situation and material needed to get the job done. In addition, the time that it takes to complete this will also vary.

Sail plans are rather inexpensive if you are aiming to build a small boat. These plans allow you to see the workings of the boat design and what you need to build the boat.

Without these plans, you will not know the exact details of the design and it can cause major issues with the boat’s hull or other areas of the boat. Think of these as the backbone or instructions of the boat’s infancy before being built.

Price Per Square Foot

You should assume to pay anywhere between $300 to $600 per square foot if you are interested in building a boat. Buying a kit outright can be a good way to save time, but oftentimes these do not come with everything you need.

Instead, you should try to source as much of the materials at the best price as possible. Thinking ahead is part of the process and you might be able to score a deal at a lumber yard or hardware store for parts.

Boat Designs Matter

The design of the boat will be much different from one boat to the next, regardless if they are the same size in length. If you are pondering boats that range anywhere between 16 and 20 feet, you should factor in the shape of the hull, any rigging, and various appendages.

Prices tend to increase when there are more complexities within the designs. If you are considering a kit with more details than others, you will also have to pay more for the designs on that as well.

Kits Can Differ

It is important to understand that all kits are not going to be the same. As you gander at sailboat kits online to stitch together, you need to thoroughly look over to see if you have everything you need before buying.

It would also be at your advantage to ask the seller if any additional parts or supplies are needed. This may change your dynamic on the kit buying process and you may pass up one for another if it has everything you need. An all-inclusive kit may cost several hundred, if not thousands, of dollars more to have the convenience of everything in the bundle.

Construction Approaches

Some boat plans may require you to have certain tools to get the job done. This means special saws or planers, which the average person simply does not have.

Purchasing specialty tools might be expensive upfront and hard to find depending on what it is. Your best bet would be to check locally for others trying to sell their tools or consider a boat plan that does not require extensive tools to finish the job.

How Long Does it Take to Build a Sailboat?

An easy to build sailboat could take a while to build from scratch. Many different variances come into play that are difficult to pinpoint for everyone. But how long is that exactly and how will your experience play into this?

A fun project to sail in the wind could take you several months to well over a year depending on the boat plan and how big your boat is going to be. In addition, the materials all need to be accounted for prior to starting in the event a hardware store does not have them in stock.

Time Varies

The time that passes for simple boat designs on small sailing vessels can be done in a few weeks. This is assuming you have everything you need and work non-stop around the clock.

Certain complex situations may make the process long, such as the difficulty of working with some materials. If you are a skilled laborer, it may take you half the time compared to a novice. The amount of time it can take will vary on your availability and skill level.

Planning ahead will undoubtedly offer the most time-saving features. It also helps if you can tackle parts of the project at your own pace.

Complexity of Design

The design of the boat may make the construction process longer. For example, it may take you longer to build a catamaran compared to a similar lengthed monohull.

More complex designs might require more materials, therefore making the process a bit longer to complete. Furthermore, you will also need more experience working with difficult designs and that will affect you more as a newbie.

Be sure to manage your expectations well and do not allow yourself to become too stressed over this fun project. If you can, seek expert boat building advice from a local builder or the company you purchased sail plans through.

Quality Materials

The quality of the materials will matter significantly when building a boat and will greatly affect the time it takes to construct it. Handling fiberglass or carbon fiber might require specialty tools, while wood also demands a certain level of craftsmanship.

If you are not skilled at working with the material at hand, it might affect the quality of the build and you may have to go back to fix mistakes. This will definitely add more time to your project, because mistakes are bound to happen with your first project.

To save time, consider adding the tools and materials throughout the year or as often as your budget allows. You may want to try testing your skills on fiberglass or other materials to get a feel for how to work with it.

Open/Dayboat, Free Sailboat Plans

Everyone who digs boating has heard of the Hobie Cat, the sleek little catamaran that burst on the scene and captured the attention of all the fast-action sailors.

hobby kat free boat plans

Marked by asymmetrical hulls and special trampoline supports, the Hobie can reach speeds above 20 mph and perform with a rare agility.

But it has one drawback.

It costs mucho dinero.

Thus, we introduce the Hobby Kat, sailboat plans, a build-it-yourself version of the “Hobie” that should cost from half to a third of the commercial version. If you have the moola, of course, go for a Hobie and have the time of your life on the water.

If not, try our Hobby

The homebuilt is not quite the same.

But she sails sweetly and fast—qualities which have made the “Hobie” popular

Even in a light air she’ll slip through the water at a fast clip.

She has no centreboards, leeboards or keel, and needs none.

The inside of each hull has built-in lift, like an airplane wing, so that as the boat heels and one hull digs in the boat is pulled back to windward.

She can run in very shallow water and the rudders kick up for beaching.

You can carry her on a trailer or even disassemble her.

tern free boat plan

Many a “stink pot” addict will take a second look at Tern because she planes in modest breezes, is easy to handle, and her streamlined prow arid pod-shaped, “inland scow” type hull offer slight water resistance. Then too, there’s a charm about the tiller of a sailer that’s not matched by the wheel of a motor-powered boat. Part of it is the challenge of making the most of nature’s free-wheeling breezes. Even with her 72sq.ft of sail, this Free Sailboat Plan is remarkably stable, and packs as many as four persons aboard

For thousands of inland lakes, Tern is the answer to sailing water sport, she is rugged and easy to launch

And she’s remarkably easy to build.

sailboat plans

Falcon is a small, speedy, sporty sailboat which handles well. Tests on the original Falcon showed that she could easily out-distance boats of comparable size such as the one design class Snipe and Comet sailers.

And she will pace neck and neck with 18 footers with considerably greater sail spread.

bannock

This strong, beamy, eight-foot pram may be sailed either cat-rigged or sloop-rigged.

The dagger-board may be adjusted forward to balance the helm when sailing with the addition of a jib sail.

Oars or a small outboard motor may also be used to power this versatile Free Sailboat Plans.

Dart

Dart” is a small two or three person sailing craft, designed for use on protected waters such as bays. lakes, rivers or wherever sheltered waters are found. Its construction will repay the builder handsomely and provide a fast sailing craft, light in weight, easily transportable and cheap to construct with all difficult joinery eliminated

It provides thrilling and economical sport.

Cresent

The 'Crescent', designed by C. T. Allen, is the ideal sailboat for day sailing on a small lake, river, or protected waters of a bay.

Centreboard design (Fig. 2) reduces Crescent's draft, so Shallow is not a problem.

Its broad beam of over 5½ft. makes it an ideal family boat because there is room for a cockpit large enough to accommodate four adults or two adults and three kids, and side and forward decks big enough to stretch out on when sun bathing.

"Jewel" is a 16' Crescent Sailboat being built by Mike Allen from the free sailboat plans by C.T .Allen in the 1958 "Boat Builders Handbook". And what a superb job Mike is doing check out his photos here .

Crescent

Sailing enthusiasts and backyard boat builders are not likely to find free boat plans for a sailing pram that can be built faster, lighter, stronger, or less expensively than Graefin-10. Two men can begin work on a Friday evening and have a smart, lively 10-ft. 85-pound sailboat in the water by Sunday evening (it’s been done).

zephyr

Zephyr Is a refinement of a type of boat developed by the English for use in the rough open waters of the English Channel. Not only is it fast under sail, but it can stand up under punishment. And it’s light enough to be easily loaded atop an auto or light trailer.

Breeze-Baby

breeze baby

Skimming off a brisk wind or with the wind abeam, Breeze-Baby actually planes with one person aboard. Despite her rowboat lines that make her easy to build, she handles easily under her simple sail, an ideal first boat. Simple lines are adapted to plywood construction that’s strong, light and that keeps Breeze-Baby’s bilges dry

You can take her with you atop your car or on a lightweight trailer for summer fun wherever you vacation or get in a week-end’s sailing.

cats paw

Cat’s Paw is easy to build because of the straight-sided hulls. The sheer line is flat and that simplifies building the form. Bow and stern are straight, so there’s no cockeyed bevel to fit and fuss with

She Is an Ideal boat to learn or practice sailing in because she will forgive so many mistakes.

Petrel 33 is the logical evolution of her smaller sister petrel 28 , with the task to expand the horizons of cruising activity for a 4-6 person crew, raising the bar of onboard comfort, keeping the boat size under the critical (for a homebuilder) size of 34 foot – 10 meters of overall length., a “new classic” looking cruiser, sturdy, with no frills and weird solutions, ready to let you sail with a decent speed and a very good comfort level both at anchor and sailing., the starting point is the very good sailing capabilities shown by the petrel 28, so i decided to develope this hull into a enlarged design, keeping a quite narrow hull for actual standard, prolonging the bow lines for a plumb stempost; i expect to have a similar behaviour of the proven 28footer, with a tender weather helm in every situation, a very soft and gentle wave riding attitude in a seaway, and a good acceleration coming out of the tacks, i expect a little bit more speed given the longer water length ; section are moderately full at the bow, maximum beam is around 60% of hull lenght , transom sections keep a moderate vee.

petrel 33 hull lines

Stability calculations give us good parameters (see stability curve attached) , with a real large positive area stability, a 123° AVS (Angle of Vanishing Stability) with loaded boat, and a minimal negative area in the stability curves.

Rig and sailplan:

Sailplan is based on a 50% area split among mainsail and a furling jib ; we kept the upwind sailing area to a moderate value, avoiding “wannabe racers” temptations; a decent sized gennaker can be hoisted on the fixed bowsprit, an obvious choice given the fact that the new generation furlers are making this sails very easy to manage for cruising crews too, adding the pleasure of sailing downwind in light airs at a decent pace, a weather situation which is quite a pain in normal mainsail + jib configurations ; in roughest situation you can hoist a storm jib on a removable internal stay fitted on a high load chainplate leaning on the forward structural bulkhead ; rig is a classical 2 spreaders mast , spreaders are 15° swept, there is a structural backstay and no structural runners, lower shrouds are doubled., deck gear configuration features classical sturdy and manageable solutions, without too many frills : 4 self tailing winches to pull sheets, halyards and control lines, 2 stoppers array on cabin top panel, 2 tracks for jib cars, so that the jib can keep a decent shape even furled, a small track for the mainsail purchase, all the control lines are led to cockpit to avoid bow walks in “spicy” situations (plans will detail how to make bombproof fitting points for lifelines too);, boat will be powered by a diesel (20-30 hp) or electric (7 kw) inboard engine fitted with a saildrive or shaft-line transmission ; this will allow to keep a decent pace while motoring in zero wind situation, or to add a good booster to sail thrust if needed; i expect to reach a 6.5 knots boat speed at 2000 rpm with a 30 hp diesel engine., rudder and steering system:, rudder is a single blade semi-compensated one with tiller steering system ; there will be two options detailed on plans: spade rudder with ss steel shaft (this solution is depicted in rendered images), and an easier to build transom hung rudder., finkeel is naca profile keel made of welded steel plates, ; ballast is made by lead poured in the keel hollows ; keel is fitted on the hull with a web of bolts on solid hardwood floors, with nuts and high thickness ss steel counterplates under the cabin floorings; keel load is carefully distributed to avoid any local high stress area., interiors and on board living:, this area marks the main differences among this 34 footer and her smaller sister; higher hull topsides and two more meters of boat make a world of difference in terms of interiors and on board comfort; we have 6 regular berths, a comfortable galley and dinette area, a decent volume for on board systems and storage, all that you need to medium-long range sailing given the size of the boat ; both forward and after cabin are closed with a small door to gain a little bit more privacy ; cabin height is around 191 cm , cockpit is quite wide, and it’s designed to be comfortable for a crew of 6 while sailing with the heeled boat too ; transom area is protected by a sturdy wooden hinged structure that can be lowered when moored to be used as a transom platform. low sleek coamings protect the forward area of the cockpit , making the primary winch basement too; toerails and good sized areas among cabin flanks and hull sheerline make going to the bow a very safe operation even when boat is heeled and in rough conditions;, building system:, given the good amount of miles sailed by petrel 28  in every sea state with very good reliability, i keep a similar structure for this project, upgrading the scantlings to cope with higher stresses; so the boat structure is a grid of plywood bulkheads and frames linked by solid wood stringers and a mixed plywood-solid wood structure forming keel backbone and stempost ; hull planking is made by 12 mm plywood, with the radiused area made by two layers of 6 mm plywood panels , all glued to the underlying structural grid , in a reliable , sturdy and easy to build system called “radius chine” ; cabin , cockpit and deck surfaces are made by 10-12 mm plywood panels stiffened by a grid of secondary stringers, solid beams and other structural elements; the hull bottom is further stiffened by a number of solid wood floors , tightly spaced in the centerboat area, where they bear the finkeel loads. all critical areas and structural bondings are strengthened and stiffened by epoxy resin laminated glass fabric and epoxy resin liquid joinery and structural bondings. this building system is definitely suited to be realized by home builders or small boatyards, with a basic level of wood craftmanship , in a decent amount of time given the size of the boat., in my view this will allow a small boatyard to build and offer a highly customized top level sailboat keeping the final prize to a reasonable level, which is basically the main concern when it comes to manage a small boatyard..

Description:

Our second generation stitch and glue is the ideal material for a light and fast sport boat. The plywood cored epoxy-fiberglass composite panels are stronger and stiffer than a plain fiberglass skin and the construction of such a boat is within the reach of any amateur builder.

The 5 panel hull shape is easy to build. It has less wet area than a sharpie hull but still has the flat bottom ideal for good downwind performance and planing.

The powerful fractional rig is based on a keel stepped Al tapered spar, 7/8 rig with swept back single spreaders, no running or mast head backstays.. Spinnakers are set on a retractable pole.

The preferred keel is the vertical drop keel with a 400 lb bulb on the end of the high aspect foil. It is lifted by a tackle made from the main sheet with an extra block. . Fully retracted, the bulb remains below the hull.

Spade rudder, fin bulb keel are described in detail with full size pattern for the bulb and keel fin

While this a Mertens-Goossens design, credit must be given to Evan Gatehouse for his collaboration. Evan designed the rig, appendages and did most of the engineering work. Without Evan, this design would still be an unfinished project.

The cockpit is 110" (280 cm) long, giving plenty of space for working the boat.

The plans show an integral outboard bracket for a motor of 2 to 4 HP, 20" or longer shaft..

The inside is wide open except for the mast and keel trunk. The sole extends under the cockpit. There is plenty of space for two sleeping bags. The max, height under the small cuddy is 34", 19" under the deck. While this is far from the comfort of a cruising boat, there sufficient space to sleep two.

For best performance, we recommend the lifting fin keel. The plans show the construction of the fin and the lead bulb. This is within the reach of an amateur.

For those who prefer a centerboard type keel, the plans show in great detail a swing keel. That CB keel is made of a steel core (2x2 bars) in plywood-epoxy-glass foil. While the CB keel will not deliver the same performance than the fin keel, it is good solution for those who must adjust draft as they sail.

Plans give specs for Al spars and it is easy to extrapolate to carbon fiber.

Stanchions and backrest webbing are an highly recommended option .

The deck plan is detailed. We show specifications and part numbers for all parts but this an area where experts sailors will customize their boat.

The inside sole is an option. It can be replaced by a smaller, lighter structural platform to support the keel trunk and a stringer all around.

Lockers can be built in but racers will prefer canvas pouches.

As with all our boats, buoyancy foam is an option. Around 4 gallons of our tow part foam will make the boat unsinkable. There is plenty of room for that foam under the sole.

Foam core is not an option for the hull but is a good choice for all other parts.

Consult the designer for a super light version using honeycomb for most parts except the hull. Weight gain will be around 80 lbs but material cost will double.

Sailing Rigs

The plans show two main sails, the larger one with a pronounced roach. This is not a boat for a first time sailor and builders will use our sail plan and deck plans as a starting point that they can adapt to their preferences.

home built sailboat plans

The jig produced on the ShopBot retains the correct shape and supports the boat, while it is being built, to retain the exact design measurements.   The plans for the boat can be found from many sources for free on the internet.   Plans are available in many languages, as well.  One such source is http://www.optiworld.org/Woodguide05.pdf Another guide to building an optimist is http://www.burcotboats.co.uk/howToBuild.pdf , as well as half a dozen other well written articles on the internet.   But none provide CAD quality drawings or files to work with modern computer controlled machine tooling.   Well, here they are:  The jig as well as the major parts of the boat.     The jig sides , mast step, rudder, dagger board , dagger board case ends and doubler pieces are made from 18mm or 3/4" ACX or marine grade plywood; (1219.2mm x 2438.4mm) 48" x 96".

Now to get started, the jig we have designed is the exact dimensions of a finished hull shape.   Both ends of the jig have interlocking pieces to allow for inserting and removing as needed during the building of the boat.   The cross members are standard 2" x 4" cut to 44" long and with a 3/4" dado 8" to each side of center to fit into the grooves of the forms.   These should be cut so as to be flush with the top of the form and screwed into place to prevent movement.   The bottom boards provide a stable platform for the jig to sit on.   The jig should be placed on a flat surface for the build, as distortion to the jig will transfer to the boat being built.    Save the scraps for blocking.

Depending on what you hope to achieve – as well as your previous DIY and boat-building experience – your chances of success when trying to build your own boat can vary enormously. However, if what you hope to make is a modest boat of the kind you can take into a lake for a day of fishing, that’s the kind of thing most people can hope to achieve. And if that sounds like you, this video tutorial will show you how to make a serviceable 7.5ft craft from two sheets of plywood.

Then it’s just down to you to find out how to build something similar yourself.

Swamp boats

As you can see from the photos in this post, boats like this have been around for many years – and boats like this are found around the world anywhere that shallow waters or swamps exist. Buying a ready-made kayak can set you back a whole lot of money, but with a few basic DIY skills and a little bit of determination, you can build one yourself for much less. This video teaches you how to make one for only $100, offering a saving that sounds too good to refuse.

How to Build a Recumbent Pontoon Pedal Boat – Mother Earth News

If you’ve ever wanted to own your own pedal boat , this is the plan for you because it teaches you how to build one yourself! It discusses important issues like flotation and gives you all the information you need to complete the project. And if you think you’d like to have a go, why not see if you can build something similar?

Here’s an original idea we loved! In this video, this YouTuber shows us how he built a functioning boat – out of PVC pipe! It’s certainly unconventional, but it looks like it works perfectly. So if anyone is looking for a fun and off-the-wall to try project, this could be just the thing!

Pontoon Boat Picnic Table: 8 Steps (with Pictures) – Instructables

The boat in this plan is one of our favorites because, while technically it’s a DIY pontoon boat , in practice, it’s more like a floating picnic table. With a boat like this, you can power out to the middle of the lake before cutting the engine and enjoying a nice lunch in perfect tranquility. This is something we’re thinking of trying ourselves!

This video is the first instalment in a series of tutorials detailing how this YouTuber built a boat from scratch. This part deals with the start of the project and lofting the boat plans , but if you like the way he works, you can also check out the other videos he’s uploaded and see how the final thing turns out.

Homebuilt Pontoon Boat/Double-Hull Kayak

For anyone who wants to make a functional boat without spending a fortune, this plan is perfect. The boat it teaches you to make is very “DIY” since it’s made of nothing more than PVC piping and some other similarly inexpensive materials. However, it looks like it floats, so if that’s all you need – and you aren’t too worried about looking flash – this is a plan that could be fun to copy.

If you like fishing and you’re looking for ideas for an individual fishing boat, you’re going to love this video. In it, we get to see this YouTuber’s eccentric creation that, to us, looks a bit like a floating armchair perched on top of three coolers. But that sounds like all you need for a great fishing trip, right? And we’re sure lots of people will enjoy trying to make something similar.

Simbo

The sub-heading to this plan is “as simple as it can get”, and that’s a pretty accurate way of describing this boat, both in terms of design and construction. The details state it has a displacement of 230lbs, so it can comfortably accommodate one person, allowing you to get out on the water without spending much money at all.

This short tutorial gives you a simple suggestion for building a motorboat that is both easy and inexpensive to make. In the video, you can see that the boat struggles a little with two people in it, but it still works. This could be a great project to attempt for anyone who wants to have a go at building their first boat, and if that includes you, it’s recommended watching.

Building a Wooden Boat: 12 Steps (with Pictures) – Instructables

This is the third plan we’ve included from the Instructables website, but this is by far the most professional of the three. The boat this tutorial teaches you to build looks as though it could have been made by a professional. The plan is easy to follow though, so if this is the kind of boat you want , this is a post that should be well worth a look.

One sheet Sampan

As this post explains, a sampan is a type of boat from Southeast Asia, and the word “sampan” comes from the Chinese meaning “three planks”. They are a popular boat in the region because they are easy to construct and extremely reliable, and if you’d like to try building one yourself, this plan will teach you how to do it.

This is a plan for anyone who’s up for a challenge because in it, you’ll learn how to make a DIY sail catamaran. The video is only about five minutes long, but as long you have some reasonable DIY skills and a bit of common sense, it shouldn’t be too hard to replicate, so why not see if you’re up to the task?

While not many people will have the time, skills or determination to finish a project like the one in this video, we still thought it merits a place on our list because of how impressive what they did is. Over five years, this couple built their own boat from scratch, and this video documents their progress. Check it out – it will blow your mind!

Plywood Lath Coracle

Among the very first boats ever invented, the coracle is a simple design that’s easy to make and fun to play about in. And if you think you might like to have a go, this is the plan that will teach you how to do it!

DIY Simple Wooden Toy Boat: Woodworking for Kids

Perhaps building a real full-sized boat might be a bit much for you – but if you have kids, maybe making a miniature toy one with them could still be fun. It could also be a way to fire their creativity and imagination, and who knows? When they grow up, maybe they’ll build a real one for you in return!

Israel-Hezbollah latest: Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah killed; Iran warns Israel will 'regret their actions'

The Israeli army says Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has been killed after airstrikes in Beirut. An unprecedented five hours of further Israeli strikes have hit the city, sending residents fleeing on to the streets.

Conflict explained

  • Israel is bombing Beirut and southern Lebanon, claiming it is targeting areas used by Iran-backed Hezbollah militants
  • Hezbollah and Israel have traded fire across the border since the 7 October Hamas attacks
  • Who is Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah?
  • Who and how powerful are Hezbollah?

The Lebanese health minister says 11 people were killed and 108 injured by Israeli strikes yesterday.

Daniel Hagari is holding a news conference.

He says Israel's war is with Hezbollah, not the Lebanese people.

"We warned the world countless times, Hezbollah is dragging the state of Lebanon and the entire region into a wider escalation. Israel does not seek a wider escalation," Mr Hagari claims.

Hezbollah and Israel have exchanged fire across the border since 8th October, after Hezbollah fired rockets in what it said was solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

Those skirmishes were largely limited to the border area, but Israel has escalated airstrikes on Lebanon in recent days.

Hezbollah, US sources, and Lebanon also blamed Israel for blowing up walkie-talkies and pagers which wounded more than 3,000 people - an accusation Israel denied.

Emotions ranging from shock and disbelief to real anger will be taking place across Lebanon, says international correspondent John Sparks.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was revered and "one of the pivotal, most charismatic leaders of the so-called Axis of Resistance".

"The Israeli strategy here is to 'escalate to de-escalate' to force Hezbollah to back down. I don't think there's any guarantee of that happening."

On the outskirts Dahiyeh, special correspondent Alex Crawford added that guns were fired and women started crying on hearing of the death of Nasrallah.

"He was also their religious leader, as well as the head of their political movement," she said, adding there will be an outpouring of anger and grief.

"We can't underestimate the severity of what's happened here.

"There has been a monumental change and shift, an earthquake-sized shift now, with what's happened and it will have massive reverberations, not just in Lebanon."

She said: "I would not be surprised if people took to the streets very quickly and chaos ensued."

Crawford described a "religious fanaticism" and "fervency" among his supporters.

"His loss, as you can hear from the sound of gunfire... is going to cause a lot of almost anarchy and chaos."

By Alistair Bunkall , Middle East correspondent, in northern Israel

The leader of Hezbollah is dead.

This is a very big moment, not just in this conflict but for the future of the Middle East.

In 2006, the last Lebanon War, Israel tried and failed to kill him. Last night, in a huge series of strikes on southern Beirut, they finally hit their target.

Over the past 18 years, Nasrallah has grown Hezbollah in his image, expanding its forces, building its infrastructure and significantly expanding its arsenal.

He wasn't just the leader of Hezbollah, he was a global figurehead of anti-Israel resistance. With Iran's help, Hezbollah became one of the best armed non-state militaries in the world. It is now decapitated and in disarray.

During the past decades, Israel has also been at work, steadily gathering intelligence on Nasrallah and Hezbollah, building a vast database of information: efforts which arguably distracted them from better understanding the intentions of Hamas.

The intelligence successes of the past days have helped restore Israel's reputation after the stunning failures on October 7th.

This a pivotal moment. Iran and Hezbollah must now decide how to respond: fight, or back down.

The strike also killed Ali Qaraqi, commander of Hezbollah's southern front and labelled as the second most wanted by the IDF.

It is still unclear who else died in the strike, but given the location and the presence of top officials, it seems likely that other senior figures would have been eliminated too.

Nasrallah will be replaced. The assassination of enemy leaders can prove to be a short-term victory because they are often succeeded by someone more formidable than before, as witnessed by the killing of the former Hezbollah leader Abbas Al-Moussawi in 1992. He was succeeded by Nasrallah.

The working assumption is that the group will respond with barrages of missiles into Israel, probably targeting Tel Aviv.

But Hezbollah's command structure has been severely degraded by Israel. Nasrallah had become isolated as the IDF  steadily killed commanders over a fortnight of scything airstrikes on their compounds in Beirut and elsewhere.

It will probably take time to co-ordinate a response and it will probably be done with Iranian guidance.

Nasrallah might be dead, but Hezbollah isn't. They are badly wounded, not just as a paramilitary force but in the eyes of the Lebanese people, many of whom are angry their country is now facing another period of devastating violence. This might be a moment for more moderate voices within Lebanon, including the national armed forces, to step in.

As the war escalated over recent weeks, noticeable divisions emerged between Tehran and Nasrallah. He remained an important ally, however - a trusted advisor to Iran's Supreme Leader, and this will come as a personal blow to him.

Having resisted the opportunity to get involved so far, Iran might decide the time has come to take the gloves off and deploy what is left of the thousands of missiles they've provided Hezbollah with.

Alternatively, after such a difficult ten days, Tehran might conclude that this round of fighting needs to end and pull back with its main proxy still in some shape to rebuild and fight another day.

With such momentum behind Israel, Iran will also be concerned about its own fate and that of its smaller proxies in Iraq and Syria.

Ultimately, the reason for Hezbollah's existence - to act as insurance against an Israeli attack on Iran's nuclear facilities - hasn't changed, but if Tehran calculates its proxies can no longer act as that shield it might try to accelerate its nuclear programme.

The Israeli government has choices of its own: order a ground invasion of southern Lebanon or continue with an air campaign that has delivered such dramatic successes.

There will be strong and compelling voices in Netanyahu's cabinet urging him to take advantage of the situation and send troops in.

But Hezbollah is not defeated - thousands of its soldiers remain and they are likely hiding in the vast tunnel network under the hills across the border. Even a limited ground invasion risks large loss of life on both sides, and the potential Israel will be lured into something more prolonged than it intended.

Nasrallah's death might change the dynamic in Gaza too. Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas, has clung on and rejected ceasefire attempts in the hope that Hezbollah and Iran would go to war with Israel, dragging its enemy into a multi-front and unwinnable conflict.

That might still happen, but just as Nasrallah became isolated, so too is Sinwar. The much trumpeted "unity of arenas" has failed to join up.

The Middle East might often look chaotic to outsiders, but there are unspoken rules generally acknowledged and followed by belligerents.

For years Hezbollah and Israel acted within the unwritten but understood parameters of a shadow war.

Then, eleven months ago on October 8th, Hezbollah attacked Israel out of solidarity with Hamas. Nasrallah tied Lebanon's fate to Hamas, insisting that Hezbollah would only cease fire when the fighting ended in Gaza. That ceasefire never came.

The rules shifted as the crossfire escalated, but it remained broadly contained within boundaries understood by both sides.

Until two weeks ago, 17th September, when thousands of pagers started exploding across Beirut and Lebanon.

It is possible Nasrallah had concluded that Israel was war-weary and he overestimated the domestic and international pressure Netanyahu was under to end the fighting.

He might have believed that Netanyahu had neither the will nor the support to open up another front. He, like so many of us, maybe assumed US influence on Israel would prevail.

Those miscalculations cost him his life.

Hezbollah has confirmed the death of its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, following an Israeli airstrike.

It pledged to keep fighting its battle against Israel.

It said: "The leadership of Hezbollah pledges to the highest, holiest, and most precious martyr in our path full of sacrifices and martyrs to continue its jihad in confronting the enemy, supporting Gaza and Palestine, and defending Lebanon and its steadfast and honourable people."

France's foreign ministry says it has information confirming Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah is dead.

The IDF claims to have assassinated him in an airstrike on Beirut, but the group itself has not confirmed this.

His fate was also overlooked in a statement by Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, to whom he was a trusted adviser.

"According to the information we have, Hassan Nasrallah, secretary general of Hezbollah, would indeed have died," the French foreign ministry said in a statement.

Israel's former prime minister Ehud Olmert has told Sky News he is against a ground invasion in Lebanon.

"I certainly hope that we will not do it. I think it will be very violent and very bad for the Lebanese in the south.

"It won't bring the kind of solution that will make it different or change the balance."

Commenting on IDF reports that Hezbollah's leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed in strikes overnight, he described it as "inevitable".

He said he hoped an all-out war would not break out in the region.

"What is the alternative? The only one is where Lebanon takes responsibility for what happens within it – and takes Hezbollah out of the border [region with Israel]," he said.

"We have to accept genuine efforts by the US and French administrations to work out an agreement between the governments of Israel and Lebanon to end the conflicts we have."

This would see Hezbollah withdraw from the Israeli border region and allow displaced Israelis to return to their homes.

"We will not tolerate any attacks directly from Iran or their proxies," he said.

"It has to change. If they continue, there will be more bloodshed. Lebanon will be destroyed – and we will suffer pain, there's no question about it."

Israeli airstrikes on the Lebanese capital are ongoing, witnesses tell Reuters.

The city has been subject to hours of attacks, leaving destruction in their wake.

Israel warned air traffic control at Beirut airport that it would use "force" if an Iranian plane landed, a source at the ministry told Reuters.

Lebanon's transport minister has confirmed to Sky News he personally intervened to stop the plane from touching down.

The Reuters source said it was not clear what was on board.

"The priority is people's lives," the source added.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has said Lebanon will make Israel "regret their actions".

"The fate of this region will be determined by the forces of resistance, with Hezbollah at the forefront," he said.

"Forces of resistance" appears to be a reference to the Axis of Resistance, a loose coalition of Iran-aligned armed groups including Hamas, Hezbollah and Yemen's Houthis.

"The terror gang ruling the Zionist regime did not learn from their one-year criminal war in Gaza, and failed to understand that the mass killing of women, children and civilians cannot affect the solid construction of the resistance organisation and destroy it," he added.

"Now they are trying the same foolish policy in Lebanon."

He said Israel was "too small" to cause significant damage to Hezbollah, despite Israel claiming to have assassinated the group's leader.

"All the resistance forces of the region are with Hezbollah and support it."
