5 reasons to experience the U.S. Sail Grand Prix Chicago at Navy Pier

Published on June 12, 2023 by Choose Chicago

The Rolex United States Sail Grand Prix Chicago at Navy Pier brings action-packed racing to Lake Michigan, Chicago’s Skyline Stadium , on June 16 – 17, 2023 to kick off the summer of racing.

National teams from the United States and all around the world will race hydro-foiling 50-foot race boats that literally fly over the water while sailing at 60+ mph speeds, thrilling crowds on land and on water, all in the heart of the Windy City.

Chicago is the only freshwater venue in the world, and is the first event to open SailGP’s season four! Here are five reasons to come experience the adrenaline-fueled racing at Navy Pier:

1. Race boats that literally fly out of the water. Really! The F50 catamaran uses hydrofoils to lift out of the water and achieve highway speeds, faster than almost any power boat! This means close racing, crashes, capsizes, and drama — definitely not your normal day on the water.

Boats on the water during SailGP

2. Come for the party, stay for the racing! Tickets start at just $35 for general admission on Friday or Saturday. The Race Stadium opens at 3 p.m. and racing begins at 4 p.m. each day.

New to the festivities this year: the White Claw™ Beach Club. With panoramic views of the racecourse, the Beach Club is located right at the water’s edge and is the best place to witness the fast and furious racing action of SailGP.

3. Feel the spray of the F50s flying by Navy Pier. SailGP brings fans closer into the action than any other sporting event with opportunities to meet world-class athletes on shore and catch a glimpse of the race boats up close!

4. Bring your own boat! Yes, Chicago’s Skyline Stadium really will feel like a race course and you have the opportunity to bring a boat (or ask a friend) and anchor right next to the race course for an unparalleled, up-close race experience!

5. Don’t have your own boat — no problem! Another new option is the On-Water Premium Presented By White Claw™ Spirits. Treat yourself to an exclusive race experience onboard the SailGP spectator boat fleet with unique viewing opportunities located immediately next to the race course.

Navy Pier is race stadium headquarters and will host the weekend party to watch as the turbo-charged 50-foot race boats fly only a few feet away, across Chicago’s Skyline Stadium. Enjoy live music and DJs, premium food and beverage experiences, fan shops, big screen TVs, fireworks, and more!

Racing takes place between Navy Pier and Adler Planetarium, guaranteeing a front-row seat along the waterfront as well.

Tense battle, finish line drama for Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac

MACKINAC ISLAND, MI - When the Cruising Division boats took off from Chicago on Friday, Eagle One, a sleek 65-foot boat owned by Tim Lariviere of Grosse Pointe, shot out to an early lead in Lake Michigan for the 114th annual Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac.

When light winds on Friday and into Saturday made it clear it was going to be a tactical race, the vessel tracker showed Eagle One’s crew of mostly past commodores from the Bayview Yacht Club took the vessel across the big lake to hug the Michigan coastline. Eagle One led for nearly the entire 333-mile race - the longest annual freshwater sailing race in the world.

Until the last mile. That’s when the big 104-foot ketch Whitehawk, owned by Peter Thornton, sailed past Eagle One to take first-to-finish line honors.

“Racing into the Mackinac Straits, the majestic ... Whitehawk had every sail raised and every trick out of the bag to overtake Eagle One , the sleek 65-foot cruising boat that had led the entire fleet since the start,” race communications staff said.

“Trailing Eagle One for 288 nautical miles, it took until the final mile for Peter Thornton’s Whitehawk to overtake and clinch line honors of the 114th Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac presented by Wintrust.”

Lariviere and his crew credited Thornton for a well-earned victory. It’s his second consecutive line-honors win with Whitehawk.

There are lot of boats still in the race among the different divisions, and some may not be arriving at Mackinac Island until Monday. The race starts near Chicago’s Navy Pier, heads up Lake Michigan, rounds the top of The Mitten and sails under the Mackinac Bridge before approaching the finish line near the Round Island Lighthouse alongside Mackinac Island.

While the Cruising Division began Friday with light winds, Saturday’s start for the sleek Racing Division was hit by a squall that pelted some of the boats with rain.

“Sunday afternoon and evening, the two fleets continue to make their way up Lake Michigan, sailing in moderate conditions along the Michigan shoreline. The faster boats competing in the Racing Division are expected to finish overnight, with the remaining teams crossing the finish line throughout the day Monday,” race officials said.

Merritt, Scott Sellers come from 'dead last,' win 46.5-hour race from Chicago to Mackinac

Portrait of Phoebe Wall Howard

Merritt Sellers, at 15, and the crew sailing on "nosurprise" won a 46.5-hour race from Chicago to Mackinac Island by fewer than 6 minutes on Monday.

The crew of eight sailors scrambled to overcome a mistake and seize victory. This was the second year in a row that the 36-foot sailboat owned by Scott Sellers of Larkspur, California, won its class in a race from Lake Michigan to the Straits of Mackinac. The boat is based at the Little Traverse Yacht Club in Harbor Springs, where Sellers has a summer house.

"We were over (the starting line) early, so had to go back and restart," Merritt Sellers told the Detroit Free Press while returning the transponder that tracks race boats to event organizers based at the Pink Pony in the Chippewa Hotel on Mackinac Island . "We were dead last for a while. We were a mile behind. The entire race, we were fighting back, taking boat by boat."

It wasn't until early Monday, she said, that nosurprise moved into first place.

"Then we lost it and then we got it back," Sellers said.

The sailors on the boat − from Michigan, Wisconsin, Texas, Connecticut, Ohio and California − wanted to be right at the line to go full speed as soon as the gun fired. They didn't realize they were early until about 3 minutes into the race.

"They say it over the radio. They call your sail number," Sellers said. "It took us 7 minutes to get back" to the starting line.

The crew, which included Hadley Camp and Owen Beckley of Harbor Springs, finished in 46:27:06 hours, according to the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac results posted online .

"We didn't panic"

Hannah Sellers didn't sail after last year, despite winning.

"It was a pretty gnarly race — pouring rain and thunderstorms and lightning for hours. It was one of the most intense storms I've ever seen. It felt really exciting to race through that," 18-year-old Hannah Sellers told the Free Press at the time . "Then a tough finish for seven hours upwind with intense waves and a cold front. It was pretty chilly on the boat."

This year, the wind was "up and down and shifting directions. We had to shift a lot of gears and change a lot of sails," Scott Sellers, a private equity manager, told the Free Press after the race. "We didn't realize we were over early, and we had to go back. ... But we didn't panic. We knew it was a really long race. We were conservative in our tactics."

Winning, he said, "takes a combination of a lot of effort, skill and luck, and we had all three."

Scott Sellers grew up in Birmingham and began racing Mackinac at age 14 with his father — Bob Sellers, who owned the Pontiac Buick General Motors dealership in Farmington Hills before selling it, moving to Florida and retiring from racing as an "old goat." He earned that title, which carries honor in the sailing community and is sometimes tattooed on ankles of sailors, as someone who raced at least 25 times from Port Huron to Mackinac Island.

The J/111 was viewed as highly competitive, as illustrated by the tight margins between the top finishers. Colin Caliban of Covert, Michigan, and his seven crew members placed second on No Quarter. The boat from South Haven Yacht Club finished in 46:32:07 hours. Bradley Faber of Holland, Michigan, and his four crew members finished third on Utah of Macatawa Bay Yacht Club in 46:50:06 hours.

Bayview Mackinac vs Chicago to Mackinac

Nearly 200 boats raced in the Bayview Mackinac race a week ago. More than 230 boats sailed from Chicago, according to the Chicago Yacht Club. Race officials said they didn't expect any changes to the nosurprise victory but said results are considered provisional initially in case of protest or another unexpected development.

Only Merritt and Scott Sellers sailed the 2022 Port Huron to Mackinac race together, with Merritt driving alone at night, and won their class . They did not make the podium this year in the Bayview Mackinac Race. But Merritt Sellers is c redited with inspiring other young sailors to race the long Mackinac course.

The sailboat that carried Merritt and Scott Sellers to victory had been owned by Dave Irish, a Great Lakes legend and past president of U.S. Sailing. He earned a reputation for offshore sailing skill and mentoring sailors who went on to compete in America's Cup.

Scott Sellers, who sailed 20 Mackinac races with Irish, purchased the boat in 2020 with hopes of carrying on his legacy of introducing new sailors to the sport. Of the eight crew members finishing Monday, five were 25 or younger.

"One more thing that made this special was that it was a three-peat," Sellers said. "Winning the J/111 class three years in a row, every year since the prior boat owner and my sailing mentor, Dave Irish, passed."

Another year from Chicago to Mackinac

Published on July 25th, 2023 by Editor -->

The 114th edition of the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac delivered a mix of squalls and calms for the 289 nm northerly course up Lake Michigan. The 2023 race got underway July 21 for the Cruising Division with the bulk of the 240 teams starting a day later.

For the 98-boat Mackinac Cup section (boats 40 feet and above), the Mills 41 Final Final won Section 2 and the Cup. Owner Jon Desmond (Cohasset, MA) admitted they had more than a few moments of angst when early on in the race they made a tactical decision to split from the fleet.

“We had this moment where it was like, ‘you realize we have just separated from the teams that have how many Macs under their belt’?” he said. The decision paid off, and the East-coast team of first-timers is already planning its return to defend the victory.

In the Cruising Division winner Albatross, a Solaris One 42 owned by Fernando Assens (Miami, FL), edged out Eagle One by three minutes on corrected time to earn his name on the inaugural Whitehawk Trophy, donated by Marjorie and Peter Thornton. The Thorntons own the trophy’s namesake, and have added the overall trophy to Chicago Yacht Club’s prestigious collection in recognition for the burgeoning Cruising Division.

Thornton’s Whitehawk, the 104-foot ketch earned the Royono Trophy as the first boat to finish this year’s race, but thanks to the handicap netted out in sixth place. Whitehawk and Eagle One battled it out in the Mackinac Straits, a 10-mile stretch infamous for where the race can be won or lost.

While Dakota finished fourth in the Cruising Division this year, one of its own is the repeat winner of the Harken Blockhead award: Megan Geith, 21 years old, on the Beneteau 47.7 Beneteau. The Blockhead award is awarded to the first sailor under 25 to finish the race.

For the 103 boats in the Chicago-Mackinac Trophy section (boats under 40 feet), Liquid Lounge II, a J/109 out of Chicago owned by Jim Caesar, took overall honors.

Doublehanded division winner McQueen, owned by Justin Acker (Leland, MI) and teammate Ted Lockwood of Traverse City, sailed the J/88 to victory in the four-boat fleet.

While Meghan and Christina O’Rourke may not have made the podium on their respective boats, the two sisters celebrated their family’s legacy in the 100th anniversary of their great grandfather’s 1923 race. John O’Rourke sailed his boat to victory that year, but was later disqualified due to a failure to supply the boat’s measurement certificate.

The sisters said their love for sailing and the Mac Race runs deep. “Every Christmas, every holiday, we would hear these magical stories of being on the water and all these great events that our family has participated in,” said Meghan. “So it definitely drew us to the sport a little closer.”

With Meghan on the Farr 40 Hot Lips and Christine on board Nelson Marek 46 Skye, both in the Section 3, they relished the competition. The way the race played out this year, the two boats were within yelling distance to each other in the Straits.

“I think our great grandfather would definitely be proud … and especially because we both got all of our certificates in,” Meghan said laughing.

Chicago River Swim: Open water swimmers take on relocated race in Lake Michigan

Christian Piekos Image

CHICAGO (WLS) -- On a rainy Sunday morning in Lake Michigan, hundreds of eager and already wet swimmers hit the water for an amazing cause.

Sunday marked the first plunge of the relocated Chicago River Swim.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

"The people who are here are enthusiastic, they are excited, they are supportive," Chicago Open Water Swimming CEO Doug McConnell said. "They've raised truck loads of money."

Becca Mann was one of the first swimmers to finish the course.

"Open water is such a fun sport," Mann said. "Anyone can do it. I mean, we have these safety buoys... I'm from Chicago, love the city. Absolutely love everyone in water here, whether it be the river or the lake."

The swimmers technically swam in Lake Michigan, but organizers hope to host the event next year in the Chicago River.

It was pretty awesome, just seeing everybody go by... It was just a great experience overall. James Ochoa, Chicago River Swim participant

Organizers agreed with the city to relocate the event to Ohio Street Beach due to safety concerns .

Regardless, participants still raised $150,000 for ALS research at the Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine and another $50,000 for the Kroc Center in Pullman to help fund swim lessons for local youth who might not otherwise be able to afford them.

"I think the moment they come to the beach, they accomplish something and they reach the beach," said Dr. Hande Ozdinler with Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine. "In our research, we will feel accomplished when we find an effective cure for ALS."

James Ochoa swam the race for those affected by ALS.

"So it's just like any way to help, any way I can," Ochoa said.

He said swimming along the city skyline was an experience like nothing else.

"It was pretty awesome, just seeing everybody go by, seeing your friends," Ochoa said. "Everybody else cheering on their family and stuff. It was just a great experience overall."

This sailor left Newport to race solo/non-stop around the world, the first US woman to do it

NEWPORT – Newport's adopted daughter, all 100 pounds of her, is taking on the world.

Cole Brauer , in her beloved and trusted 40-foot yacht First Light, sailed out of Newport Tuesday morning, bound for Spain. In an endeavor she labels far more job than adventure, the 5-foot-2 Brauer is geared to be the first American female sailor to race solo/non-stop around the world.

Neither competing nor finishing – both significant accomplishments – is her primary goal. She's sailing to win. And she's not shaking in her boat shoes pondering the roughly four months being physically alone with First Light, sailing a reverse Magellan route, in the inaugural Global Solo Challenge . This non-stop race starts late next month in A Coruña, at the northwest tip of Spain, where it also finishes.

Brauer's longest previous solo sail was 1,200 miles from Fort Lauderdale to Newport. Global Solo is 26,000 nautical miles. That's quite a leap.

“It's not intimidating for me,” Brauer, 29, said recently at the Newport Shipyard, where First Light has been fine-tuned this summer. “Maybe I'm naive, but I've had my head down so many years just focused to this goal, going around the world, I've gotten very tolerant to this idea. Maybe it was intimidating in the beginning. But we're just taking it day by day.”

Why she left from Newport

Brauer rolled into town back in April and has had her very crowded van/home parked here for most of the spring and summer. She calls Newport the sailing capital of the world and said she couldn't think of a better place to get her boat ready for the big, big race.

In June, she won the 24 th  biennial Bermuda One-Two , a Newport-to-Bermuda-to-Newport race that requires a solo sail on the first leg and a double hand on the way back.

On her solo leg south, Brauer landed in Bermuda 18 hours ahead of her closest competitor, with a time of 3 days, 4 hours, and 55 minutes. Primary skipper Brauer and secondary skipper Cat Chimney (a marine electrician from Newport), made the return trip in 3 days, 1 hour, and 30 minutes, beating the runner-up by 12 hours and making Brauer the Bermuda One-Two's first female winner. There were 25 boats in the field.

First Light's owners, the Day brothers of Chicago, then asked Brauer what should be next. They were, she said, anxious for another win. In a go-big-or-go-home move, Brauer suggested the Global Solo Challenge, and the Days, who years ago recruited her to sail their 40-footer, gave a quick thumbs up.

What does her family think about the race?

Brauer's parents, meanwhile, scratched their heads.

“They think I'm nuts,” she said with a smile. “They think I'm absolutely insane. I would say that they think I'm insane, but they're getting used to the idea. And I think that their much more proud of me now, especially because they're starting to realize that this 10-year adventure I've been on isn't just me gallivanting around the world, sailing on cool boats, having beverages at yacht clubs, and not really fulfilling what my mind and body was made to do, which is what my parents always wanted me to do.”

How she got into sailing

While she's starting to assemble quite the race sailing resume, Brauer does not head into her latest and greatest challenge with your typical sailing pedigree. At East Hampton High School on Long Island, she was a three-sport star athlete who didn't know the way to the yacht clubs. She and sailing didn't discover each other until she went to college at the University of Hawaii where she joined the sailing team. But, oh how they hit it off.

She was hooked. Instead of trying for, perhaps, a spot in medical school after graduating with a degree in food science and human nutrition with a focus on medicine, Brauer recognized her true calling: sailing. Competitive sailing, in fact.

Enthusiastic, smart and plenty tough enough to keep plugging when she wasn't always treated warmly, she worked on crew after crew, on bigger and bigger boats. She didn't let occasional rejection derail her dream. She wasn't too proud to keep asking for a spot on a yacht. She knew she could prove her worth, and keep learning.

'I know I don't fit the mold'

She's been a professional for five years. The Days recruited her to sail their beloved First Light. So what if she's 5-2 (maybe) and 100 pounds and can't haul sails around like the guys do? She still gets the heavy, exhausting work – the lugging, the grinding – done, and done properly and in timely fashion. She's learned exactly how to position her body, right down to her feet, to get the brute work done. It's like science to her. She said she wouldn't wave some magic wand to make herself bigger and stronger.

She's very comfortable operating under Brauer Power, even though, or maybe especially because, so many people can't resist telling her she does not look like an elite racing sailor.

“I've been told that by everybody, including teammates, former employers, my mother, everyone under the sun,” she said with another big smile. “I know I don't fit the mold. I don't think there's a particular mold for a sailor. And if there is one, we should break it.”

Brauer is very comfortable with her 40-foot fiberglass pal. She affectionately refers to First Light as a “tank”, not because it plods through the water but because she feels so protected by the Class 40 Owen-Clarke design. She said Team Brauer has First Light in tip-top shape and that, on the seas, she can fix just about anything aboard.

“I wouldn't want to be on any other boat,” she said. “I always said I want race around the world on this boat. I've been with her long time. … She's my protector. She is my primary life raft. She's everything to me. I'll spend four months with her. I can't imagine a better boat to do this on.”

What to know about the Global Solo Challenge

The race route will take the sailors south, across the equator, and then turn east. It passes under Africa, under Australia, and under South America before turning north for the run back to Spain. So, most of the course is in the Southern Hemisphere, where October through January/February is spring into summer.

Team Brauer has the skipper provisioned for 167 days. The around-the-world record for a 40-footer, she said, is 137 days. Brauer's goal is 120-130 days.

The penalty for a land stop is five days. Race officials will be notified electronically if she puts First Light's motor in gear.

Her food is supply is entirely freeze-dried meals. She, of course, has water. She'll be all alone on the oceans, but she won't be. First Light is equipped with sophisticated electronics. That includes Starlink, meaning she'll be able to FaceTime.

The challenge is both physical and mental. She said the team has already brainstormed about the need for her to eat and drink enough; she must be at full strength in order to give the race all she can physically and mentally. Brauer stresses that this is in no way, for her, a pleasure cruise as, perhaps, it is for some competitors. Global Solo Challenge is all business for the pride of Springs, Long Island and Boothbay Harbor, Maine (where her parents re-located) and, yes, Newport, R.I.

“I'm not an adventurer,” she said. “I'm a racer. This is what I've been trained to do for number years. I'm here to compete. Here to race. This is a stepping stone.”

So many people ask Brauer how sleep works when you're sailing solo for a long time. First Light does have an auto-pilot for sailing. She said she'll sleep, at night, in periods of one to two hours. Awakened by an alarm or by her brain, she'll go on deck to check the sails, to give everything a good look. And if all's well it's back down for some more abbreviated shut eye.

There are four cameras on First Light. The plan is to make a documentary. That's four more cameras than there are bathrooms. Brauer has only a trusty bucket for relief and an awful lot of water for disposal. Repeat, this is not a pleasure cruise.

She said people can follow her race course progress on the Global Solo Challenge website. She'll be posting on Instagram .

Hoping to inspire other female sailors

Brauer said she hopes her participation – and, better yet, a strong showing – can help others, namely other female sailors, to aspire to great things in the world of competitive sailing. It is, she said, a male dominated world that isn't always the most welcoming to females, especially small ones.

She said part of the reason she's sailing to Spain (estimated 12 to 15 days) for the race is so there will be absolutely no way anyone can question whether she has sailed the prerequisite solo hours. She's double dotting her i's and double crossing her t's.”

“I've been denied from a lot of different programs, some around-the-world,” she said. “It's always had to do with my size. I want to show that it's possible to be that little girl from Long Island who did not grow up sailing and still be a professional sailor.”
