Benetti’s Superyacht Calex Reviewed
- By Diane M. Byrne
- September 8, 2023
It’s a long way to go from California to Italy just to build a boat. Then again, Calex , delivered last year by Benetti , is a 220-foot fully custom build—60 feet larger than its owner’s previous superyacht , which was semicustom. It’s also an example of the degree to which an experienced owner will go to ensure the comfort of those accompanying him: not just family and friends, but also crew.
While a larger yacht naturally affords more indoor and outdoor space, this California resident wanted an abundance of both, prioritizing privacy and well-being.
Arguably the best example of this is the owner’s suite, which, in combination with a dedicated alfresco area, is more like a penthouse apartment. Giorgio Cassetta and his team at Cassetta Yacht Designers, which has styled numerous Benettis, penned 1,772 square feet on the upper deck for this, from amidships forward. The owner’s suite includes the master stateroom, an office, a double bath and a walk-in closet. Since the stateroom faces sole-to-ceiling glass forward, 180 degrees of changing views welcomes the owner each morning. The alfresco lounge lets the owner relax in privacy. Accessible from the suite via two curved sliding doors, the lounge has chaises, chairs and a gas fireplace. And, the raised foredeck forward can be the owner’s touch-and-go helipad.
Unwinding in the company of friends and family was also important in commissioning the yacht, whose beach club is one of the more cleverly private places aboard Calex . Beach clubs have become bigger indoor-outdoor areas, especially through the use of fold-down platforms. They enhance the feeling of having a large lounge atop the sea, but they present a problem when owners and guests want seclusion. So with Calex , a single gull-wing door fully aft swings up to yield access. The beach club is still sizable, in part thanks to the yacht’s 35-foot beam. Guests can watch sports on the TV, enjoy drinks from the bar and use the hammam. To take a dip, they can step out onto the swim platform and use the flip-down swim ladder. Boarding water toys is just as simple from the platform.
And boy, does Calex have toys—especially ones that will help guests burn calories. Stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, water skis, electric surfboards, electric foiling boards, a wakeboard and a surfboard are all available. Friends and family craving a little more speed can step aboard two personal watercraft capable of 65 mph. If the toys aren’t enough exercise, gym equipment and a yoga space are on the sun deck, with a nearby hot tub for a post-workout muscle soak.
All of the time and attention put into creating these areas would be for naught if the crew had subpar quarters. Time and time again, well-planned crew’s quarters contribute to stronger staff retention and a better yacht-ownership experience. Sixteen hands, led by Capt. Eddie Cooney, handle operations aboard Calex . While no one will blink to learn that Cooney’s cabin is on the bridge deck, near the wheelhouse and the ship’s office, they’ll definitely do a double take to see its design, along with that of the quarters for the rest of the crew belowdecks.
According to the Benetti Style Department, the owner had a singular focus for their area from the start of planning. The furnishings and decorative materials are similar to those in the two main-deck VIP staterooms and four guest staterooms (two doubles and two convertible twins) on the lower deck. Finally, and wisely, dumbwaiters connect the main-deck galley to the upper decks’ lounging spaces inside and out.
Calex also features sculptures and art pieces the owner has picked up amid his travels. The yacht casts a comforting spell, inviting guests to be as social as they wish throughout the five enclosed decks, as well as outside on the terrace-like areas and fully open sun deck. Movable deck furnishings make it easy to go from big, garrulous groups to cozier conversations. Simultaneously, Calex caters to more secluded downtime, especially for its owner. Ultimately, Calex is built for different needs, including those of the crew.
It’s a long way to go from California to Italy to get all of this. But, especially for this owner, it was worth it.
Well(ness) Wishes
As much as the owner set aside space for health and wellness, he wanted the interior ambience of Calex to convey a sense of well-being too. Ivory-toned furnishings and warm woods, such as maple and American walnut, create a serene atmosphere, along with a dose of sophistication. The decor is by the Benetti Style Department and the owner’s team.
Engine Emissions
Calex is Benetti’s first fully custom yacht in this size range to comply with Tier III regulations. Tier III is an International Maritime Organization standard that reduces nitrous-oxide emissions by about 70 percent compared with prior regulations. Calex has a scrubbing system for exhaust gas from the main engines and gensets.
Charter Calex
Calex is part of the Northrop & Johnson charter fleet. The yacht is heading for the Caribbean this winter and the Mediterranean next year. A glass elevator and space-planning make the five enclosed decks accessible for wheelchairs. The weekly base rate starts at $680,000.

Calex, the Benetti 67meter that it’s a true bespoke yacht
Calex is a 67-metre bespoke yacht with a steel hull and an aluminium superstructure, custom-made by Benetti for a Californian owner. The sleek exterior styling is by Cassetta Yacht Designers, while the contemporary interiors, featuring precious marble and fine wood, are designed by the Shipyard’s Style Department.
The master cabin is on a deck designed around the owner. Facing forward and looking out onto an exterior space with a lounge area and fireplace, it cannot be seen from the upper decks because of a clever interplay of perspectives and volumes that ensures complete privacy. ( Here all our posts about Benetti ).
Calex: 5 decks plus sundeck
The yacht extends across five enclosed decks, plus a Sundeck, and stands out for her perfectly balanced volumes. The interiors were fitted out using the ‘box in box’ method and meet the highest construction standards, testifying yet again to the shipyard’s exceptional craftsmanship, with new technology used on “Calex” to minimise noise transmission and ensure silent navigation at a speed of 12 knots.
A bridge entirely dedicated to the owner
The stand-out feature of this 67-metre yacht is the Upper Deck, which has a surface area of 160 square metres devoted entirely to the owner’s personal spaces.
A huge Master Cabin , containing a spacious suite , an elegant double bathroom , a private office and a walk-in wardrobe , extends from midships onto the foredeck outside and offers a 180-degree view, with two curved automatic sliding doors opening out onto an exclusive lounge area furnished with chaises longues, armchairs, a table and an original gas fireplace. While wide open, it is a very private space, much of which cannot be seen from the upper decks as a result of the carefully planned volumes and depths.
The foredeck can also be used as a touch and go helicopter pad, giving the owner the greatest possible freedom when coming on board. On the same deck, an open area in the stern, with a dining table and a relaxation area furnished with armchairs and other seating, is complemented by an interior lounge with a TV cabinet.
Calex: accommodation for 12 people
The stern area on the Main Deck hosts guests in a spacious open-air lounge, while inside we find the main lounge , with a table seating 12 , sofas and armchairs, followed by the galley. The owner also wanted two large VIP cabins on this deck, one on each side of the yacht, with two garages of different sizes in the bow for the main tender and various water toys.
The four guest cabins , two doubles and two with twin beds (convertible), are midships on the Lower Deck and completely separated from the accommodation in the bow for the crew of 16, which at the owner’s request is decorated with materials and furnishings similar to those used in the guest area.
Separate guest and crew flows and the use of dumb waiters ensure maximum privacy and excellent service on board, connecting these areas with the galley on the Main Deck and the upper decks.
Calex, plenty of space
Also on the Lower Deck of M/Y “Calex”, amidships, is the large engine room, Benetti’s first on a full custom yacht this size to fully comply with TIER III regulations because it is fitted with a scrubbing system for the exhaust gases from both the propulsion and generating systems.
In the bow, the spacious swim platform and the beach club are connected to the Main Deck by two fixed stairways. A gullwing door opens onto the swim platform and lets light flood into the interiors of the beach club, where a long swing-down hatch on the starboard side provides easier access to the water and even more light.
The Bridge Deck , which has an outdoor space containing a lounge area furnished with bar, sofas, TV cabinet and barbecue and is served by a pantry, revolves around the captain and the wheelhouse. The large captain’s cabin is separated from the officer and crew quarters to be close to the ship office and the futuristic helm station, which features a touchscreen console designed by Telemar.
On the Sun Deck , the only deck not served by the lift, a central area with gym equipment and a Jacuzzi pool ensure the utmost in comfort and well-being.

The 12 Most Exciting New Yachts at the Palm Beach International Boat Show
Wrapping up the international boat-show season, this year's pbibs could be a banner event, with the largest gathering of superyachts in its history..
From the $148-million Feadship Arrow , to a stylish, fish-fighting 37-foot center console from Turkey’s Vicem, the 2023 Palm Beach International Boat Show promises be a boat-lover’s nirvana. The focus this year will be on superyachts for sale, with more than 50 expected. We highlight five of the biggest and best as well as seven global and US premieres of smaller boats for the rest of us.
The action on the West Palm Beach waterfront kicks off Thursday, running through Sunday. Here are 12 newcomers you don’t want to miss.
Feadship ‘Arrow’
Rumor has it that mega-successful British hedge-fund manager Michael Platt is looking to trade-in his 245-foot Feadship Arrow . The founder of BlueCrest Capital, Europe’s third-biggest fund, took delivery of the yacht in 2020 and now it will make its show debut at PBIBS in search of a buyer. It comes with a jaw-dropping $148 million asking price. Designed by London-based H2 Yacht Design, the Feadship has cabins for 12 guests and a main-deck owner’s suite to die for. Other standout features include a state-of-the-art gym, massive beach club with drop-down side terraces, a stunning top-deck bar and lounge area, massage room, and enough water toys to equip a cruise ship. She’s fast, with twin MTUs delivering a 17.5-knot top speed.
Benetti ‘Alfa’
With its plumb bow and curving superstructure, the 229-foot Benetti Alfa looks like many contemporary designs these days. But the brokerage yacht’s real innovation lies at the stern, with a split-level beach club that includes an infinity pool (that transforms to a dance floor with a cover) on the deck above, and a full-beam lounge under the pool, with drop-down balconies on each side to increase openness and width. The owner also specified his own deck, with a bedroom, office, gym, massage room, television room, bar and breakfast area—not to mention an 860-sq.-foot sunken forward sundeck.
Benetti ‘Calex’
Delivered just a year ago to its California owner, the stunning 219-foot Benetti superyacht Calex is making a surprise appearance at the Palm Beach show—to showcase the boatbuilding skills of the Italian shipyard. Built with a steel hull and aluminum superstructure, Calex ‘s sleek, low-slung lines are from the drawing board of designer Giorgio Cassetta. Belowdecks is a seven-cabin layout that can accommodate 14 guests, with the highlight being the massive 1,770-sq-ft owner’s deck. Here, in addition to the master suite, is the owner’s lounge, bar and office, plus a private sundeck with gym, spa and gas fireplace. Word has it that Calex ‘s owner is billionaire Southern California auto dealer David Wilson, whose Wilson Automotive Group boasts 17 dealerships and annual sales of around $2 billion.
Palmer Johnson ‘DB9’
Named after the classic V12 Aston Martin model, the 9,200-hp, 171-foot DB9 is a speed demon that can blast across the water at 37 mph—or about three times the speed of most yachts its size. The iconic Palmer Johnson, the only one built in England, was first launched back 2010. Its lines from Venice design firm Nuvolari/Lenard make it look fast, even at the dock. In 2019, the new owner upgraded its systems while having its exterior repainted in a metallic Champagne color, with the signature red boot stripe. The boat has three pools, including a 26-foot-long saltwater pool on the foredeck that doubles as the boat’s tender storage when it’s empty. DB9 promises to be one of Palm Beach’s brokerage stars.
Amels ‘Come Together’
Named after the Beatles song, Come Together is the first Amels Limited Edition 60 that was launched last year. It is distinguished by a geometrically shaped exterior with a metallic hull. The owner of the 197-footer used the yacht for exploring the world, but his plans changed and it’s now on the brokerage market. The yacht has a touch-and-go helipad on the foredeck, a DJ booth, and a large beach club for water sports. On the sundeck is a teppanyaki grill, bar, hot tub and drop-down cinema screen. The interior by Winch Design has a beachy theme, with refined details like leather handrails, brass inlays and appliqué walls. The design firm focused on stones and wood to create beautiful but highly tactile finishes. A patterned, stylized stairwell is Come Together ’s centerpiece.
Princess S72
Fresh from its January debut at the Düsseldorf Boot indoor boat show, the super-stylish S72 from Britain’s Princess Yachts, is making its splashy, in-water debut and key North American premiere at Palm Beach. Designed by the Princess studio, with Pininfarina adding Italian flair, the S72 joins the Princess S Class line-up of S62, S66 and S78 coupe-style fast cruisers. With twin MAN V12 diesels—choose between 1,650-hp or 1,800-hp—this big-windowed cruiser has a top speed of up to 36 knots. Unusual design features include a huge tender garage, expansive power sunroof above the helm, and a spacious flybridge. Princess is also showing the all-new F65, while giving the X80 its first US airing.
Intrepid 51 Panacea
Florida-based Intrepid Powerboats is unwrapping its biggest, and fastest, center console to date, the new flagship 51 Panacea. Priced at around $2 million, it’s also the most-expensive Intrepid yet. Big brother to the builder’s more cruising-focused 475 Panacea , the new 51-footer is fresh from the keel up, with an all-new, smooth-riding stepped hull, broader beam, and greater deck space. The extra length has also been used to incorporate a second row of four-across seating behind the helm, a big hardtop with wraparound windshield, and an outdoor galley in the cockpit. To escape the sun, there’s also a roomy cabin with side access, a forward V-berth and head with shower. While the base engine package is a quintet of Mercury 450 Racing outboards, the 51 Panacea is also being offered with four Verado 600 V12s.
Horizon PC68
Power cat specialist Horizon definitely has the power part covered with its brand-new PC68, making its global debut in Palm Beach. With a pair of 850-hp MAN turbo-diesels, Horizon talks about a “cruising” speed, rather than top speed, of 20 knots for the 68 footer. Its fuel capacity of 1,500 gallons, the PC68’s range should be extensive—though Horizon has yet to release that data. Equally impressive is the amount of deck and interior space provided by the 24-foot beam. In each of the hulls is an equal-sized master suite with king-sized bed, along with separate VIP guest cabins with twin beds that slide together to form a king. The upper flybridge deck is also generous with its space, featuring a walkthrough windshield to a Portuguese bridge and open deck area with exceptional views.
Zeelander 5
After a year-long tease, Dutch builder Zeelander’s Z5 is making global debut at Palm Beach. The still-unapologetically-retro 50-footer carries on where the Z44 left off. Besides an extra four feet of hull, the all-new Z5 features bigger windows in the wheelhouse with new, pencil-thin windshield frames, and an even more voluptuous rear end with a swim platform almost twice the size of the Z44’s. Powered by three Volvo IPS-650s, this new Z5 can hit a top speed of over 40 knots, yet the builder’s focus on noise reduction makes this Zeelander’s quietest boat yet. The longer hull has helped increase the size of the amidships owner’s cabin which now benefits from bigger hull windows.
Vicem 37 CC
Turkish wooden boat master Vicem is dipping a toe into the fiberglass center-console market with the Vicem 37 CC, making its world debut at the Palm Beach show. So new is the first hull that it won’t actually arrive at the show until the second day, and with no time to officially photograph the finished boat, there are only renderings available. Vicem teamed-up with Turkish designer and passionate angler Murat Iyriboz and Virginia-based DLBA Naval Architects to shape the new 37 CC. In addition to a center console, the 37 will also be offered as an express cruiser. In true Vicem style, the boat will combine elements that are modern and traditional—like teak coaming around the bow and quilted, hand-stitched upholstery. Buyers can choose from dual or triple outboards, with total possible horsepower of 1,000 hp, with the largest motors projected to give a 45-knot top speed.
Numarine 26XP Fast
Seems American boat owners love to go fast. Which is why Turkish builder Numarine is debuting a U.S.-focused version of its beefy 26XP explorer-style 85-footer at the Palm Beach show, appropriately titled the 26XP Fast. And fast it is, courtesy of a pair of honking 1,800-hp MAN diesels powering the planing hull version of the 26XP. Flat out, the 85-footer does an impressive 31 knots. According to Numarine, the boat is the fastest in its class. That’s a big step up from the standard, full-displacement-hulled 26XP with twin 435-horse MANs. It has a leisurely 13.5-knot top speed but will be drinking a lot less fuel. What hasn’t changed is the 26XP’s headturning Can Yalman exterior design, with that high, vertical bow, quirky-shaped bulwarks, reverse-angle pilothouse windows and stubby foredeck. Plus, its massive 700-square-foot flybridge.
Arksen Adventure 30
Dubbed the Land Rover of the seas, this new, tough-as-nails Adventure 30 from Britain’s explorer-yacht builder Arksen , is making its U.S. debut. Best known for its world-girding 65- to 85-foot Explorer series, Arksen partnered with Finland’s XO Boats to build this new 30 and its smaller Adventure 28 sibling. While not exactly a Palm Beach-style cruiser, with its exposed, military-grade aluminum hull, enclosed pilothouse, and distinct lack of sun loungers, the boat is a natural for the rugged Pacific Northwest. But it’s not all basics. Teak covers the decks. There is leather on the steering wheel and a comfortable V-berth in the cabin. Offered with either a single 350-hp outboard, or twin 250s, top speed is more than 45 knots, and with fuel in the tanks the range is 230 miles at 25 knots.

1,000 rounds of ammunition and fireworks were onboard yacht that burned in Marina del Rey: Owner
MARINA DEL REY, Calif. (KABC) -- The owner of a luxury yacht that erupted in flames and sank in Marina del Rey said 1,000 rounds of "unspent ammunition and fireworks" were onboard the vessel, according to fire officials.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department provided an update on the incident in a social media post Thursday morning.
The fire was reported shortly after 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at 211 Basin A, where flames engulfed the multi-level, 100-foot boat, the agency said.
Residents in the area said they heard multiple explosions resonating throughout the harbor as yacht was consumed by flames. Fire officials said two people were able to get off the boat uninjured.
Fire crews poured water onto the burning vessel, which later sank into the harbor.
An environmental hazard team was expected to arrive in Marina del Rey Thursday to assist with the cleanup of the burned vessel.
A United States Coast Guard Incident Management Team from Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach is monitoring the cleanup efforts, according to the Coast Guard, which said that the yacht "caught fire and discharged red-dye diesel."
"The fire did not appear to damage any other vessels in the harbor," the USCG said in a statement Thursday. "The Coast Guard is working with Patriot Environmental Services and Clean Harbors organizations to contain and recover the discharge from the yacht."
The yacht's fuel capacity was reported to be 6,000 gallons, according to the Coast Guard. Crews from California Department of Fish and Wildlife's Office of Spill Prevention and Response and the L.A. County Sheriff's Department are also assisting in the efforts.
The Oiled Wildlife Care Network was also notified and was on standby for wildlife response. "No observations of oiled wildlife have been reported at this time," the Coast Guard said Thursday morning. "For your safety and the safety of the animals, do not attempt to capture oiled animals." Witnesses were urged to report oiled wildlife to (877) 823-6926.

53m Damen Yachting support vessel Five Oceans delivered to her owner
Related articles, superyacht directory.
Dutch yard Damen Yachting has delivered its second 53.3-metre support vessel, Five Oceans . This follows her launch in March 2024 which was completed in the presence of her "delighted owner" Tommy Allen. According to BOATPro , she is currently anchored in Nice, France ahead of her debut at this year's Monaco Yacht Show .
Five Oceans will now assist Allen with his company Five Oceans Global Solutions – an organisation dedicated to marine conservation, resource management and safe, responsible deep-sea exploration.
" Five Oceans will be used to research life below the surface of our oceans, a topic and cause central to Mr. Allen's operations and an important vision that we are honoured to be contributing to with this Yacht Support platform," said Jan van Hogerwou, commercial executive at Damen Yachting.
Construction on Five Oceans began in December 2022 after two years of design and development. The YS 53 series is an evolution of the YS 5009 , which was originally based on Damen's commercial platforms. Highlights include a vast aft deck across a nine-metre beam for carrying toys and tenders with a 15-tonne deck crane for launch and recovery.
The support yacht is powered by two Rolls Royce MTU engines delivering a combined total of 6,000hp and a top speed of 19 knots. The vessel is also fully IMO Tier III compliant, reducing harmful emissions by 70 per cent for full-range operations with a 5,000 nautical-mile range. According to the shipyard, Five Oceans is "strongly focused on highly demanding performance, efficiency and comfort."
Five Oceans sits beneath the 500GT threshold and can carry anywhere between six and 16 guests or staff, depending on how the owner wishes to use the vessel, as well as accommodation for a crew of 10.
According to BOATPro , Damen Yachting has seven units currently under construction, including a second YS 53.
The news follows the delivery of the 60-metre superyacht Satemi . Her sistership, the sixth Amels 60, recently completed her sea trials .
