– Spacious living spaces
– Fuel-efficient at lower speeds
Hopefully, this article has provided some ideas and examples of what your best Great Loop boat might be. Beyond a few hard limitations, it’s a matter of taste and style. There’s no right or wrong answer–you’ll often see many unexpected vessels doing the Loop.
If you’re considering the Loop, check out the America’s Great Loop Cruisers Association for more details.
There’s no set size limit for length, but all boats looking to complete the Loop must pass under a low fixed bridge in the Chicago area. If your boat is more than 19 feet, 6 inches above the water, thou shall not pass.
Some people have reported that boats as long as 70 feet have completed the Loop. But taking a vessel of this size is not recommended, as you must navigate numerous tight locks and low bridges along the route. Most Loopers choose boats less than 50 feet long.
The smallest boat is the one that you’re comfortable on. Jet skis have completed the Loop, but they’re limited to staying in hotels or camping. It’s best to have a boat that will be comfortable to live on for the better part of a year. Most people want a boat at least 35 feet long to do that.
Most cruisers take about a year to do the Loop. Several factors affect this plan, and it’s always an individual choice. Generally, you’ll be northbound in the spring to be westbound through the Great Lakes in the summer. Then you “fall down” the rivers in the autumn so that you can over-winter in Florida. But many people take breaks, leave their boats in storage, and complete the Loop in sections. Furthermore, many folks want to take their time and enjoy the scenery. It’s not a race, after all.
Matt has been boating around Florida for over 25 years in everything from small powerboats to large cruising catamarans. He currently lives aboard a 38-foot Cabo Rico sailboat with his wife Lucy and adventure dog Chelsea. Together, they cruise between winters in The Bahamas and summers in the Chesapeake Bay.

I’ve never been much of a yacht person.
That’s mostly because I didn’t grow up in proximity to the ocean or other yacht-appropriate bodies of water. It wasn’t until I moved to the Mediterranean that I got a crash course in yachting.
If you’re new to yachting like I was, let me catch you up.
Yachts and boats are differentiated mostly by size and purpose. A boat is just about any type of vessel that floats—for utility, for business, for racing, and more. A yacht is distinct in that they’re at least 40 feet in length and tend to be more luxuriously designed and appointed.
That’s the key here—yachts are for pleasure.
Most of these flashy vessels are docked at yacht clubs.
What’s a yacht club, you might ask? Like any type of club, these groups bring together hobbyists and professionals who adore yachting (and even sailing). Most yacht clubs set up shop near or on marinas where members dock their boats.
Some also offer membership benefits like mooring discounts, training sessions, sailing programs, and even social events. The very best might even include fine dining restaurants, clubhouses, pools, fitness centers, and lounges, similar to a social club .
But the focus is on yachting as a passion—which means some of the world’s best yachting clubs are located in tropical paradises where boats abound.
What’s coming to mind for you? I’m already imagining the Caribbean .
Specifically, I have the British Virgin Islands in mind. This cluster of islands is renowned globally for its yachting and boating culture. Even the US Virgin Islands offer a few top-tier yacht clubs.
Want to know the best part? Yacht clubs are usually open to the general public, especially those who are on private charters. While yacht clubs are heavily geared toward those who own a vessel or are chartering one, some might even let people visit their restaurants.
If you’re interested in exploring the world of yacht clubs, make sure to check out these locations. They’re some of the most highly rated yacht clubs in the Caribbean.
Bitter end yacht club.
Virgin Gorda
What makes Bitter End Yacht Club a top pick for BVI travelers?
Aside from its over-the-water rooms and emphasis on eco-friendly materials, this club has been a top choice for years thanks to its location. Virgin Gorda is renowned as one of the most beautiful islands in the British Virgin Islands.
On top of that, the Bitter End is placed right smack in the middle of the British Virgin Islands’ best sailing conditions. Year-round sunshine and ideal wind conditions mean that those who stay here can take advantage of boating adventures all day, every day.
The cherry on top is its family-owned and open-minded nature. Many guests report returning year after year thanks to the homely and casual vibe.

Peter Island
Ocean’s 7 Yacht Club is a popular stop for guests on private charters along with those mooring their own vessels. The staff manning the yacht club are prepared to help yachters dock their boat, then start enjoying nearby activities—from snorkeling to sipping on a cocktail.
The restaurant is also highly rated. The fresh seafood has been highly rated, along with the view over the ocean. Just keep in mind that this is a sleepy little outpost, similar to the Bitter End Yacht Club.
The Moorings is one the premier yacht chartering groups in the British Virgin Islands—no need to bring your own vessel.
The Moorings is also a global brand, meaning you can expect plenty of experience and expertise when you book a charter or another experience. The focus here is on customization. From their base in Road Town, Tortola, the Moorings team can help you craft a personalized yacht charter.
Most are focused on exploring the 50-odd islands dotting the British Virgin Islands. Some charters also include docking portions to allow visitors to sample the best restaurants and cocktail bars around the islands.
St thomas yacht club.
Racing is the name of the game at the St Thomas Yacht Club. Whether or not you plan on competing—or even mooring—at this club, it’s a great spot to watch live regattas. The yacht club also offers lessons, including youth sailing lessons, advanced seafaring courses, and community events.
Community seems to be a pretty strong focus here. The yacht club regularly hosts events like Friday night pickleball and afternoon drinks in the galley. Plus, it’s open to newcomers, offering programs like the Learn to Sail Vacation Week.

There are many different types of yachts , and there’s no commonly agreed definition of what makes one a mini yacht, but you’ll know one the moment you step aboard. Luxury and comfort are prerequisites, and to be any sort of yacht a boat needs to have all the comforts of home. Most mariners would consider 40 feet of LOA (length overall) to be the minimum for a “regular” yacht, yet there are plenty of luxurious vessels in the 30- to low-40-foot range that, setting aside size, check all the boxes to qualify for yacht status. These, we can safely dub mini yachts. But, which are the best mini yacht brands? How much do mini yachts cost? Is there one out there that might prove ideal for you and your family?
Best mini yachts $250,000 to $500,000, best luxury mini yachts, best sport mini yachts, best family mini yachts, choosing the best mini yacht for you.
While $250,000 is a lot of money to most of us, it’s an impossibly low figure to purchase a new, full-sized yacht. It’s even tough to find a mini yacht in this category, too. You have to expect minimal size, tight quarters, and a limited number of berths. That said, there are some boats out there that hit this price-point yet still offer reaspmab;e sleeping quarters, full galleys, comfortable saloons, and yacht prerequisites like air conditioning and entertainment centers.
When searching the market for a mini yacht you’ll find that while your options may be limited at this price ceiling, it’s possible to find a wider range of models if you consider looking at used boats for sale . True, we’d all like to buy our boats new. But a wide variety of mini yachts that cost above this budgetary bar when new can be found within this range when they’re just a few years old, including some of the very best yacht brands around.
As one of the largest boat builders in the world, Beneteau benefits from economies of scale, and they have boats with all the goods of a mini yacht that fall into this budget range. The Antares 11, a 36-footer with all the comforts of home and a swing-down gunwale that transforms into a huge swim platform, is one example. Or if sailing is more your style, check out the Oceanis 34.1, with two private cabins and a full galley, head, and dinette. Beneteau boats for sale

Ranger Tugs offers the R-27, which despite its model designation is 31’7” long. Starting cost is just under our mark, rigged and ready for cruising with a Yamaha F300 outboard that provides sporty performance with a 30-mph cruising speed and a top-end over 40 mph. There’s a forward private stateroom, a dinette that converts into a berth, a full galley, air conditioning, and plenty of little perks like USB charging ports, an electric grill, a multi-zone stereo system, and EVA foam padding on the deck. Doubling the budget opens up a lot more possibilities, particularly among options from the best cabin cruiser boat brands. You can get a bit larger, a bit more opulent, and you’ll have many more options with diesel inboard power versus outboards and stern drives. Of course, not all cabin cruisers can make the grade as a mini yacht, and not all mini yachts are cabin cruisers. As your choices expand, you’ll have a lot more decisions to make.
The Axopar line includes several models that MSRP in this price range, but the big surprise here is just how large you can get and stay under the $500,000 mark. The 45 Cross Top, for example, pushes the boundary of putting the “mini” in mini yacht, yet still lists for substantially less than half a mil. We should note that these boats are by design more like weekenders than cruisers, with relatively small cabins for their size and lots of open outdoor space, but those who are more concerned with feeling the salty breezes and warm sunshine than they are with sleeping space will love them. Cutwater is known for building boats that pack a lot of utility into a very small package, and models like the C-30 CB (35’8” LOA) and C-32 CB (37’8” LOA) are great examples of why. They have everything aboard you need to live the yachting lifestyle, a flybridge atop the cabin, and are available with luxury packages but still don’t come close to breaking this price-point. Plus, with the C-30 you get the reliability and long range abilities of cruising with a diesel inboard in the engine room. Cutwater boats for sale

Jeanneau, part of the Beneteau Group, has several models that hit the mark. One nifty perk is that some, like the NC 1095 Fly, meet all the parameters for a mini-yacht and fall into this price range but also have a flying bridge. There’s no doubt you’ll feel on top of the world when you’re running your mini yacht from up top. Jeanneau also has several Sun Odyssey sailing yachts that make the grade for those who want to run with the wind. Jeanneau boats for sale

To some degree luxury, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder, but it’s hard to argue with goodies like high-tech entertainment systems, electrically-actuated loungers, solid teak interiors, or all of the above—and then some. In any case you’ll expect perks like high-end fabrics covering uber-comfortable cushions, complete climate control, and heads that have separate showers. It’s tough to fit all that into a mini yacht’s footprint, but these builders make the grade.
Back Cove Yachts was among our choices for the 10 Best Downeast Lobster Boat Brands, and this builder pulls a repeat appearance in the mini yacht division. With classic looks, a spectacular fit and finish, straight diesel inboard powerplants, and interiors that literally gleam with varnish, Back Cove’s boats are classics in every sense. Yet they also pamper the occupants with perks like hot and cold cockpit showers, electric-opening engine room hatches, and charging stations throughout. Back Cove boats for sale
While much of the Cruisers lineup extends beyond the size of a mini, their 39 EC is a boat that can’t be overlooked, and there’s also an argument to be made for including their GLS series in the realm of mini yachts. What all of the boats built by this brand share is an enormous amount of comfortable seating and open cockpits with huge settees and lounges. What’s unusual about the GLS series is that they sacrifice some cabin space to gain a bow cockpit. Yes, this does cut down on sleeping quarters, but it gains a tremendous amount of outdoor seating, and Cruisers expands your luxury level by including goodies like hydraulic lowering swim platforms, swing-down gunwale platforms, and shape-shifting seats that convert into sunpads. Cruisers boats for sale
Another boat with classic looks and downeast lines is Sabre. Only one of their models, the 38 Salon Express, counts as a mini (they have five larger models up to 58’), but it scores so high in the luxury department there’s no doubt it belongs in this roundup. This is a pod-drive boat powered by inboard diesel Volvo D4 or D6 IPS drives, riding on a high-tech resin-infused hull. Of course, what’s inside that hull is what provides the luxury, and from one item to the next you’ll spot cut-above quality. The horn is a chrome Kahlenberg; helm seats are Stidds; the steering wheel is crafted from real teak; and soles are real teak and holly. Sabre boats for sale

Can mini yachts really be sporty? Most aren’t, and they pay far more attention to interior design, comfort features, and accommodations than they do to performance. But there are a few brands out there that employ the latest in hull design and construction then match it up with beefy powerplants. The net result? You can enjoy thrill rides and high-speed chases between the bouts of lounging.
Boston whaler.
Many people would think of Boston Whaler’s boats as fishing machines rather than mini yachts, but models in their Conquest line have everything it takes to be both. And, on top of that, their performance makes them far sportier than most of the competition. The 365 Conquest, for example, can carry a pair of Mercury’s V12 600-hp outboards—the most powerful outboard engines in production today—and it can hit speeds in excess of 50 mph. You want even more speed? Fine. Move up to the 405 Conquest and you can get three of those 600-hp powerhouses, pushing speeds into the 60s. Boston Whaler boats for sale

Formula has always been known for building performance boats, and their Sun Sport models combine that performance with comfort-laden cabins, wet bars, loungers, and entertainment centers. There’s a wide range of power options but if you rig a 310 SS with twin Mercury 8.2 MAG ECT engines and Bravo III drives, you can look for top-end speeds in the upper-50s. Formula boats for sale

What makes a mini yacht great for the family? Well, truth be told any boat is apt to provide lots of family fun. But some are better for the job than others. If you want to cruise with the entire family aboard, in addition to the usual luxury touches, you’ll probably want to have separate sleeping accommodations for kids and adults, a swim platform with easy access to the water, and a good entertainment system aboard.
Pursuit has a well-deserved reputation for building rather luxurious boats and their Offshore models could have landed in a different category in this roundup, but they get the nod as a great family mini yacht for two reasons: first, because the mid-cabin berth means you get multiple sleeping spaces belowdecks, and second, because of this brand’s fishy attitude. Many kids love to fish and many parents love the bonding time, so angling households will find these boats ideal. Pursuit boats for sale

Regal’s express cruiser lineup has a couple of models that count as mini yachts, and these are eminently family-friendly. Highlights include a folding “UltraLounge” in the cockpit that converts from forward-facing lounger to aft-facing lounger to sunpad, an optional “PowerPlatform” swim step that lowers from the swim platform at the press of a button, and surprisingly spacious cabins with separate mid-cabin and forward berths. Sea Ray boats have always been known for being ideal family fun machines, and while most of their lineup is smaller than we’d designate as a mini yacht, the Sundancer line makes the grade. (The SLX line hits the sizing right, too, but cabin space is much more limited). From a family angle, we love the triple-wide bow seating integrated into a cockpit shallow enough for cabin space underneath but deep enough for kids to safely ride up front; the superior snackability of the wet bar with outdoor grill and refrigerator; and the mid-cabin berths in addition to forward berths so both the kids and the adults have their own space. Choosing among the best mini yacht brands is no small task, and choosing a specific model is even tougher. On top of that, you need to decide which type of mini yacht will make you and your family happiest. Then, there’s the question of cost: how much is a yacht , and is your budget appropriate for the smallest, least expensive options, or for larger ones? There’s only one way to answer these questions (and all the other ones bouncing around in your head right now), and that’s to take your time and check out all your options. Carefully. When you’re ready to make a decision, you’ll know it—from the first moment you step aboard.

This innovative superyacht catamaran from the Italian Sea Group is unlike any other catamaran
And when it comes to pushing the envelope of what’s possible, few yachts have created more buzz than the 143-foot-long and 47-foot WIDE catamaran THIS IS IT that Italian Sea Group Art Director and project manager, Gian Marco Campanino, R&D Centro Stile team Director, Mattia Piro, and exterior designers Lateral Naval Architects have designed for Tecnomar Yachts to build.
And the best part is since it was sold and project managed by IYC Global Managing Partner Michel Chryssicopoulos . “This is definitely one of the most exciting and ground breaking projects we have ever worked on!” Chryssicopoulos says. And IYC is offering it for charter so anyone (who has the means of course) can experience this innovative yacht for themselves.
According to the Italian Sea Group’s Mattia Piro and Gian Marco Campanino, “The reference inspiration for the style comes from the automotive world, therefore based on aerodynamics rules, fluid and organic lines, and flexible and dynamic shapes. Naturally, what applies to external lines also applies to interior styling. Smooth, “cocooning” and curvilinear are perfect words to describe the interior “mood and feel”, plus a touch of pure luxury due to the use of sophisticated and precious materials.”
And as you can see in these photos and exclusive video, the entire yacht embodies the feel of an ultra-modern luxury villa with generous amounts of well-designed living space.
The yacht’s communal areas benefit from the catamarans’ wide beam, resulting i vast spaces for entertaining, dining, and relaxation. Large sliding glass doors open to create a light and airy atmosphere with a fluid transition between the interior and exterior spaces, allowing guests to enjoy both while maintaining a strong connection with the ocean. Accommodation is for 12 guests across six ensuite cabins, including a large owner’s cabin with a private balcony. There are also accommodations for 12 crew.
The expansive use of glass throughout, including the floor-to-ceiling windows and carefully positioned 11-foot-tall skylights, floods the interior with natural light. The yacht also features a panoramic terrace with a unique vertical garden spanning two decks.
The upper deck houses a spa with a dedicated treatment area and sauna and the swimming pool straddles both hulls on the aft deck. An extendable dock gives plenty of space for an array of jet skis, wakeboards, paddleboards, sea bobs, kayaks, sea-scooters, and e-foils.
Throughout the catamaran, there are various areas for group activities, making it an ideal platform to host a multitude of events. There are several dining space options, including a galley with polarized glass, enabling front-row seats for guests to witness the chef in action. The main saloon bar provides a central point for parties and other celebrations, complete with strategically placed seating and lounging to accommodate larger groups.
Has this style of catamaran started an exciting new design trend? I think so. But you’ll have to wait for my story on all the new yachts that will be at the upcoming Monaco Yacht Show to find out for sure!
Chrissie mcclatchie, chrissie mcclatchie's most recent stories.
With the rise of expedition yachting in remote destinations such as Antarctica , Greenland, and Indonesia’s Raja Ampat, there’s a general belief that all corners of the globe are now accessible by private yacht charter.
“River cruising is the beneficiary of a larger travel trend in which luxury travelers are looking to do nothing,” Daniel Levine, director of New York consultancy Avant-Guide Institute , tells Robb Report . “By that, I mean they can visit multiple ports and soak up plenty of culture and history, all without changing hotels.”
This new fleet of river cruisers can access inland cities and remote stretches of countryside that are inaccessible to large oceangoing vessels. Plus, Levine says, there’s an added advantage to river travel: no seasickness.
One leader of the new set of purpose-built riverboats is Aqua Expeditions , the luxury river cruise operator whose first vessel, Aria Amazon , set sail on the Peruvian Amazon in 2011. Over a decade later, the fleet has grown to three river ships, none with more than 20 suites, cruising both the Amazon and the Mekong River in Vietnam and Cambodia, along with two oceangoing yachts in the Galapagos and Eastern Indonesia.
“On my river ships, 30 percent of departures are now private buyouts, similar to traditional charters,” says founder Francesco Galli Zugaro. These clients, mainly multigenerational family groups or large gatherings of friends, are people who tend to vacation on yachts rather than the typical cruise ship crowd. Most of them have come to the riverboats, says Galli Zugaro, after chartering one of Aqua Expeditions’ two yachts.
The desire for off-the-beaten-track travel is fueling this new interest in riverboat charters, says Frédéric Crétin, a Monaco-based charter broker at superyacht brokerage Camper & Nicholsons . “We’ve had a surge in enquiries for the Peruvian Amazon, especially with Americans since it’s not too far from home,” says Crétin, who manages whole-boat bookings for the Aqua Expeditions fleet.
Heritage Line operates five traditionally styled ships along the upper and lower Mekong River and in Vietnam’s Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay. “Our vessels, particularly our small-ship sailing charters on Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay, have seen an increase in private stays,” says CEO John Tue Nguyen. “We now average 12 to 15 charters annually, including families, multi-generational bookings and VIP travelers.”
In Egypt, a gap in the market to showcase the country’s temples in a private, exclusive way, was behind the launch of the Nile River’s first luxury charter yacht in 2022, Berge . “Our clients are mostly royal families, politicians, celebrities, and athletes,” says Armen Kazazian of Kazazian Cruises , the yacht’s owner. “They don’t want to share the Egypt experience with hundreds of other people.”
The 180-foot, nine-cabin vessel has recently been joined by a sistership, the 196-foot, nine-cabin Arax . True to superyacht protocol, charters are secured with an official MYBA The Worldwide Yachting Association contract, and in the lead-up to the charter, a preference form is sent out to gather information on dietary preferences and daily routines to ensure everything is ready for your arrival.
The differences also include having no water toys as one would on a conventional yacht charter. “But we overcome that with the destination and experiences, such as candlelit dinners on private islands,” says Kazazian. Maybe. But being restricted to a single route on a river is also fundamentally different than port-hopping along the Med or Caribbean.
Inland cruising has multiple benefits, insists Matthew Shollar of Transcend Cruises , Europe’s first charter-only, river-cruise company. “You’re not just in coastal locations and you can take your whole group off the boat to a spa, or go biking, or shopping,” Shollar says. “And a riverboat always docks close to your destination.”
In September 2025, the company’s first ship, the 443-foot Transcend , will launch, with a second identical vessel following in early 2026. Penned by Tillberg Design of Sweden, both are built to European riverboat specs but draw inspiration from superyachts for style and amenities, including a 2,600-square-foot indoor/outdoor fitness area that includes a gym, spa, and guest wellness facility.
“The single most expensive piece of equipment on board is a hot tip from superyachts, a 144-inch C Seed unfolding television,” continues Shollar. “It’s a worthwhile investment for guests to enjoy everything from silent discos to movie nights on the sun deck.”
The company soft-launched Transcend Advance this summer to better examine the private market’s potential. It took over a five-star vessel from Riverside Luxury Cruises. One client, celebrating his 60th birthday party, had never considered a riverboat charter, but was lured by being able to host many more guests. “We designed a six-day itinerary that was flexible and unique,” says Kimberly Daley, Transcend’s chief revenue officer. “It enabled him and his friends to see chartering in a whole new way.”
Transcend will sail “the highest-demand European waterways,” including the Rhine, Danube, and Moselle, offering waterside access to historic cities like Trier, Budapest, and Belgrade.
But a second collection of smaller luxury barges is carrying charter to canals and smaller waterways. Both Belmond’s 128-foot Coquelicot and European Waterways’ Kir Royale launched in France’s Champagne region this year, with a max capacity of six and eight guests, respectively, and the possibility of whole-boat bookings. This combination of space, intimacy, pastoral views and access to exceptional vineyards can’t be replicated on oceangoing yachts.
While luxury riverboats are still a small niche compared to the larger world of superyacht charters, they offer another kind of cruising experience, one that combines slow-moving water with a relaxed lifestyle in some of the most scenic destinations on the planet.
