Summary Analysis of the Design Ratios for the  Westerly Cirrus

'How to Avoid Buying the Wrong Sailboat', an eBook by Dick McClary

1. A Sail Area/Displacement Ratio of 17.1 suggests that the Westerly Cirrus will, in the right conditions, approach her maximum hull speed readily and satisfy the sailing performance expectations of most cruising sailors.

2. A Ballast/Displacement Ratio of 44.9 means that the Westerly Cirrus will stand up well to her canvas in a blow, helping her to power through the waves.

3. A Displacement/Length Ratio of 211, tells us the Westerly Cirrus is a moderate displacement cruiser, which means she'll carry all your cruising gear without it having a dramatic effect on her performance. Most of today's sailboats intended for offshore cruising fall into this displacement category.

4. Ted Brewer's Comfort Ratio of 15.8 suggests that the Westerly Cirrus will have the motion underway to that of a lightweight racing boat, although she certainly isn't one. Crew comfort will often be memorable for all the wrong reasons. Upwind in lively conditions the Westerly Cirrus will slam enough to shake your fillings out with a motion that most cruising sailors have no desire to get used to.

5. The Capsize Screening Formula of 2.2 tells us that a Westerly Cirrus would not be as good a choice of sailboat for ocean passage-making, owing to the increased risk of capsize in strong winds and heavy seas when compared to a sailboat with a CSF of less than 2.0.

Any Questions?

What other versions of the Westerly Cirrus 22 were built?

There were two other versions of the Westerly Cirrus 22: the Westerly Pageant 23 and the Westerly Windrush 25. The Pageant 23 was a slightly longer version with a bilge keel and a different cabin layout. The Windrush 25 was a stretched version with a longer waterline and more sail area.

What is the accommodation like in the Westerly Cirrus 22?

The Westerly Cirrus 22 has a simple but functional accommodation for up to four people. There is a V-berth in the forepeak, a dinette that converts to a double berth in the saloon, and a small galley with a sink and stove. There is also a separate head compartment with a marine toilet.

What, if any, alternative accommodation layout versions are available for the Westerly Cirrus 22?

There are no alternative accommodation layout versions for the Westerly Cirrus 22, as far as I know. The original design was optimized for space and comfort in a small boat.

What is the Westerly Cirrus 22 like to sail?

The Westerly Cirrus 22 is a lively and responsive sailboat that can handle a variety of wind and sea conditions. It is easy to sail single-handed or with a small crew, and has good speed and stability. It is also suitable for racing or cruising, depending on the equipment and preferences of the owner.

What is the average cost of a secondhand Westerly Cirrus 22?

The average cost of a secondhand Westerly Cirrus 22 depends on the condition, age, location, and features of the boat. Based on some online listings, it can range from £2,000 to £6,000.

Is this boatbuilder still in business?

No, unfortunately, this boatbuilder is not still in business. Westerly Marine Ltd was founded in 1963 and produced over 12,000 boats until it went into receivership in 2000. The company was later acquired by Vision Yachts, which continued to produce some models until 2007.

What other sailboats have been created by this designer?

John A. Butler was a prolific yacht designer who created many sailboats for Westerly Marine Ltd and other builders. Some of his other designs include the Westerly Centaur, the Westerly Fulmar, the Westerly Griffon, the Westerly Konsort, the Westerly Longbow, the Westerly Merlin, the Westerly Renown, the Westerly Storm, and the Westerly Tempest.

The above answers were drafted by sailboat-cruising.com using GPT-4 (OpenAI’s large-scale language-generation model) as a research assistant to develop source material; to the best of our knowledge,  we believe them to be accurate.

Ocean Foal, a Family Classic

This site is dedicated to Westerly’s “Westerly 22” a Denis Rayner design that was first put into production in 1963. 1963 is renowned for being  a very good vintage.

Our First Encounter

Here you see Ocean Foal when we first noticed her in front of (for this one time only) Lively Lady! Lively Lady was Sir Alec Rose’s boat that he circumnavigated the world with, returning triumphantly home to Southsea, Portsmouth in 1968. He was greeted by thousands of well wishers and given the keys to the City of Portsmouth.  He started the voyage in 1967 which was 2 years after Ocean Foal was built. Incidentally Lively Lady is presently located in Port Solent after a magnificent refit this year thanks to Alan Pridy and his fantastic team, we look forward to seeing Alan repeat that journey again very soon.

The Gunter Rig The Denys Rayner Gunter rigged 22, is all too often underrated as it doesn’t have a backstay or kicker, and many change the rigging unnecessarily. She has a large roller reefed mainsail, and can easily top 5.5 knots in a good breeze. I find, that when letting out more mainsheet than expected on a reach she pulls like a train and is extremely stable. In 1965 the Gunter rigged Westerly 22 “Young Tiger” did an Atlantic crossing with 3 adults, and proved what this little yacht is capable of.

Young Tiger 1965

Young Tiger sailed from the UK, to the Med and then on to the Caribbean in 1965 with three adults.

Review of Westerly 22

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat is equipped with 83.0 liter fresh water capacity.

The Westerly 22 is equipped with a bilge keel. A bilge keel is a double keel, which allows the boat to be beached. Bilge keels are the most popular keel for tidal waters.

The keel is made of iron. Many people prefer lead keel in favour of iron. The main argument is that lead is much heavier than iron and a lead keel can therefore be made smaller which again result in less wet surface, i.e. less drag. In fact iron is quite heavy, just 30% less heavy than lead, so the advantage of a lead keel is often overstated.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.69 - 0.79 meter (2.26 - 2.56 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Westerly 22 is 2.05, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 5.7 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Westerly 22 is about 85 kg/cm, alternatively 480 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 85 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 480 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 16.90

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 12m 2 (129 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

Can anyone advise me on the seakeeping capabilities of a Westerly 22. I am interested in having a pocket cruiser that can go just about anywhere, but have not had much luck on the web finding accounts of these boats offshore exploits. Any comments would be appreciated, including other small boats ( not Flicka prices) that might suit me. Thanks

There''s an excellent mailing list you can subscribe to for Westerlys. The group is very proactive and knowledgable about Westerlys. I don''t have the addy available but it should be easy to find. Small Westerlys have a good history of crossing the Atlantic. Most I''ve seen cross were the 25 & 32 twin keel versions. In 22'', the single keel 22'' Cirrus or Super Cirrus is probably safer in terms of stability and is capable of serious ocean work. I know of one that sailed from Cal to Hawaii and back. It recently sold for $9500 rigged and ready...including vane, diesel, gear, etc. A Cirrus would be one of my picks for a deep water 22''r on a budget. I''d like it better if it had a full keel and attached rudder though. The only problem is finding a sound 35 yr old boat.

Thanks for the info Bill, I will check out the Cirrus, I am also checking out the Centaurs. I am in the UK right now and there are quite a lot for sale, problem is they are pound for dollar in price. Will probably wait till I return to the States before I buy. Thanks again for your help.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
