Troubleshooting a Manual Marine Head
Rebuild kits generally contain all sorts of seals, valves, o-rings, and other components located inside the head's hand pump. They come with a diagram so you know where each part goes. A typical rebuild kit for a manual marine head, including discharge flapper valve, joker valve, inlet/outlet flapper, discharge flapper, and other critical seals.

On our boat that is accomplished with a small tube from the vent to a fitting on the face of the counter that one blocks with one's finger when pumping the head.

Most electric pumps have a pressure switch that activates when the pressure drops below a set value--usually around 30 or 40 PSI. Opening any tap on the boat releases pressure and causes the pump to kick on and run until it rebuilds the pressure to the cut-out setting. The pump cycles on and off until the tap is closed.

Factory Head discharge plumbing diagram.
Hi Hans. Different model 1991 boat, but our toilet discharge hose does not have a vented loop, since it goes directly into the holding tank. The sea water intake line for flushing does have a vented loop, which makes sense. Perhaps your system has the same setup as ours, since we have the same model year. No diagram to share, however.

Re: Holding Tank Plumbing Diagram. I don't own a cruiser, but I love sailing when I'm anywhere near a coast. Here in Indianapolis, I own a house boat that I spend most of the summer on. Some Indianapolis plumbers and myself installed a new toilet on my house boat recently, and our setup looked almost identical to the diagram in the post above me.

Higher capacity pumps will have port sizes of 3/4" or 1" to allow more flow. Some shower pumps offer multiple port sizes between 3/4" and 1 1/2". Now, if you're in a landlocked lake or closer than three miles to shore it is prohibited to use this function. So, with the valve installed it will either let you pump overboard or into your holding tank.

Help me put my head plumbing back right
The head system should operate in a separate plumbing circuit. Usually a bladder tank is used to replace an original tank that has cracked and is leaking. Have you figured out how that bladder is emptied? Find an owner's manual for your boat as it should have a plumbing diagram as it comes from factory.
