MADIZ Yacht for Sale
Not for sale or charter to U.S. residents while in U.S. waters.
Madiz is one of a few yachts to have survived from the early 20th century, and arguably there is no other yacht of this size, age, and original standing remaining. She was built in 1902 by Ailsa Shipbuilding in Troon, Scotland, and is the largest classic motor yacht currently listed for sale.
Madiz can also claim the title of the oldest vessel in operation to have Lloyd’s classification.
Originally commissioned by James Coates Jnr, from his friend and now legendary yacht designer G L. Watson, Madiz was intended as something of a mothership or support boat to Coates’ sizable schooner-rigged sailing yacht.
Madiz served in the Royal Navy in both world wars, hosted the British Royal Family, Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack before passing into the ownership of Costas Keletsekis who in 2003 brought her back to Lloyds 100A1 class. In 2010, Madiz found her current owners and has since been meticulously maintained as a classic yachting icon.
The 120-year-old steel-hulled motor yacht, now powered by two Mercedes 250Hp engines, accommodates 14 guests in seven cabins and operates with a crew of 10. The vessel is complemented by a 6m Riva Superflorida tender and a 6m classic launch.
Madiz is located in Perama, Athens, where she is available for viewings by prior appointment.

- This vessel is a unique survivor from the early 20th century no other yacht so old, so large or so original remains. She has evolved over her incredible 120 years but still retains significant original features both interior and on deck.
- The panelling in the main salon and dining salon would be immediately recognisable to James Coates Jnr who commissioned her from his friend, the legendary yacht designer G. L. Watson.
- The commission stemmed from Coates’ requirement for an escort yacht for his schooner Glennifer, which was the largest two masted schooner ever built. Launched from the Ailsa yard as Triton on 27 February 1902, she soon set out as mothership on cruises to the North of Scotland and Scandinavia.
- After 10 years service, she was acquired by Sir George Bullough and renamed Rhouma II.
- Bullough used her principally to allow him to travel in comfort to the Isle of Rhum which he owned and the vast Kinloch Castle which he had built as an extravagant palace to welcome his friends. But Bullough would not enjoy her for long and on the outbreak of World War I she was taken over by the Royal Navy as HM Yacht Rouma II and served in the Auxiliary Patrol Service in Scapa Flow. She only returned to yachting in 1920 when she would pass through the hands of series of well-known British yachtsmen changing names to Osprey and eventually to Hiniestia in the ownership of Sir Frederick Preston. But he like Bullough his ownership was short and she was again in naval service. This time she was on anti-submarine duties and narrowly avoided being sunk when bombed in July 1940. Then, with the return of peace, she hit the headlines and Pathe News as the Royal Patrol Yacht Hiniesta embarking King George VI, the Queen and future Queen Elizabeth II as part of the victory tour of Northern Island and the inspection of 62 surrendered German U boats on the river Foyle.
- Post-World War II, the age of large yachts was supposed to be over but enter the Hon. John
- North, second son of the 8th Earl of Guilford. His ancestors had served King Henry VIII, been prime minister during the American War of Independence and his family still lived in state. John took up yachting and after sailing extensively in the West Indies, acquired her and headed for the Mediterranean.
- Using this vessel himself but also chartering her, she became world famous when she was chartered in 1960 by Frank Sinatra who dully invited the Rat Pack including Samy Davis Jnr, Dean
- Martin and Peter Lawford. The newly elected president Kennedy’s parents were on the guest list along with international playboy Porfirio Rubirosa and Janet Leigh who had recently starred in
- Hitchcock’s Psycho. The cruise was nothing less than a riot. In 1968 John North decided to sell his 58 year old steam yacht. She was already such a unique survivor that he opted to enter her into a Christies auction of steam engines and ship models, seeing a market there rather than in the conventional yacht market. Christies themselves described her ‘as probably the oldest steam yacht in commission and classed 100A1 at Lloyds. As such she is as rare as a Rembrandt.’ But, she did not sell. Instead, she languished in Piraeus until she inspired Greek-Iranian businessman Costas Keletsekis to become a yacht owner. It was a total surprise to his wife who could not see past the neglect and work needed ‘I could not even imagine what wonderful times we were going to have on it and what a difference it would make to our lives; making them more fascinating and pleasant.’ Over the next 40 years they cruised, entertained and grew as a family.
- In 2003 Keletsekis, who had already re-engined her, decided that it was time to give her a full refit and bring her back into class with Lloyds Register. It was a herculean task that lasted four years but one that made history; She is the oldest 100A1 classed yacht in the world.
- She was acquired by her current owners in 2010. They have continued the tradition of hospitality and great care for their yacht. The interior has been enhanced by a collection of appropriate British antiques adding a new tier of history to this much storied yacht.

In a world where trends come and go, Madiz stands as a timeless icon of yachting history. As she gracefully glides through the waters, she carries with her the legacy of generations past, inspiring awe and admiration in all who behold her. In Madiz, we find not just a yacht, but a living testament to the enduring allure of classic craftsmanship and the timeless appeal of the sea.
Delivered in 1902 by Ailsa Shipbuilding in Troon, Scotland, Madiz (originally named Triton) is as majestic as it is unique and is looking for a new discerning yachtsman who wants to own and love a grand classic. The 122-year-old yacht is offered for sale by broker Jean-Marie Recamier and yacht sales advisor Jessica Ruez of Camper & Nicholsons International.
To better understand the historical significance of this vessel, know that Madiz is the oldest yacht in the world with a steel or iron hull to have Lloyd’s classification, and at 55.4 meters (182 feet), it is also the largest classic motor yacht currently for sale. According to the listing, there is no other yacht of this age, size, and original standing still in existance.
As mentioned, it was built by now-defunct Scottish yard Ailsa Shipbuilding on the banks of River Clyde, the cradle of one of the first and most famous shipbuilding industries in the world. In the 1900s, one-quarter of all the vessels built in the world were constructed there, with the “Clyde-built” denomination becoming synonymous with high quality and exceptional craftsmanship.
Commissioned by James Coates Jnr, a super-rich and successful Scots businessman, as a support vessel for his schooner, Madiz was designed by legendary naval architect George L. Watson, who established the very first yacht design studio office in the world. The famous yacht designer was also behind several other prestigious classics like Britannia, the most successful racing yacht of all time, and the America’s Cup challengers Thistle, Valkyrie, and Shamrock II.
From delivery to the present day, Madiz has lived a pretty eventful and exciting life. It was used as a purely pleasure watercraft until 1914, then it was put into service as a patrol boat in both World Wars, and eventually returned to private usage and served as a pleasure cruiser in the Mediterranean. The classic vessel has passed through the hands of several distinguished owners and was last refitted in 2007.
In the late sixties, Madiz was acquired by Greek businessman Costas Keletsekis, who was captivated by its rich heritage and timeless elegance. The yacht, however, was long past overdue for an overhaul by this point in time, and Keletsekis saw its true potential and committed to rebuilding it from the keel up to bring it back to Lloyds classification.
The hull and mechanical systems were thoroughly restored to a high modern standard, and the original coal-fired steam engines were replaced with new diesel engines from MTU Mercedes Maybach. Luckily, much of the original woodwork, including the teak decking and interior paneling, was salvageable, so the yacht still retains its original charm and unique features, with the added benefit of modern upgrades.
Madiz exudes the unmistakable style and grace of its era, but despite the fact that it has survived two World Wars and has sailed thousands of miles, it doesn’t look aged. It is fully operational and offers the same level of comfort and luxury as its contemporary counterparts. Those lucky enough to step onboard will notice that much of its interior retains the Cuban mahogany used in the master staterooms and the oak used in salons and other social areas.
If you’re wondering what it’s like to cruise onboard this classic gem, nowadays, the yacht dazzles guests with its unique finish, great attention to detail, and extravagant interior style that follows the same British Victorian themes of the 1900s. Madiz offers accommodation for as many as 14 guests across seven spacious staterooms on the main and lower deck. It operates with a crew of ten to ensure a relaxed and hassle-free luxury yacht experience and is served by two elegant 6-meter (20-foot) tenders.
The owner of Madiz will enjoy private deck access from their lavish master suite, as well as a Jacuzzi-style tub. Guests onboard will benefit from ample outdoor deck areas with dedicated spaces for dining and lounging, such as an open sundeck with excellent water views and shaded seating areas.
In terms of performance, the revamped vessel is powered by twin diesel Mercedes engines delivering 550 hp. It can reach a maximum speed of 11 knows and a comfortable cruising speed of 10 knots, with an impressive range of up to 2,750 nautical miles (5,092 km) from its 50,000-liter fuel tanks.
This one-of-a-kind vessel received further mechanical updates in 2009 and was available for private charter before the 2020 health crisis. Madiz is currently lying in Perama, Greece, where it can be viewed by appointment. The asking price for this classic beauty is €9,750,000 ($10,675,860) with VAT paid.
