David was the MAN dealer for SRQ before concentrating on Surveys/expert witness. Shop on Whitfield Ave, suggest go talk with him about your engines, very knowledgeable.

Just going by MAN's website, one that popped up and surprised me is Galati in Anna Maria. Also, Gulf Coast Diesel in Punta Gorda, which is Marine Diesel Specialists, which Capt J mentioned. They would be my first choice. I do know their Fort Lauderdale location is highly regarded.

Thanks, that's the first way I searched and the Galati link surprised me too. But then when asked, Mike G. told me they don't do surveys. Gulf Coast Diesel is indeed looking like a good option; not sure why I didn't see that when I was first on the MAN website... -Chris

In the recent past Galati’s is only doing work on boats they have sold. So at the last I checked they were not working on “outside” boats. I understand that their work is very good but expensive. Which usually goes together.

Just a follow-up, for others' benefit... Gulf Coast Diesel has been very, very helpful... instructing, surveying, and now beginning some repairs and some extensive catch-up maintenance after getting the boat moved to Ft. Myers. I very much appreciate the earlier leads here pointing to them... Cheers, -Chris

The MAN Smart HYBRID Experience integrates all essential components of the energy supply and electrical consumers into a common management system. With its customer-friendly interface, MAN Engines offers the complete solution for on-board energy supply.

Example: Diesel mode

• The user interface shows the operation of the two diesel engines, each with 1,600 revolutions per minute (rpm).
• Both clutches (diesel engine, electric motor) are closed on each drive train so that the through-drive of the diesel engine acts up to the propeller. This can be recognised by the blue arrows.
• In addition, the ‘Diesel’ mode is shown in green in the bottom bar of the display.
• The electric motor (in green) runs as a generator, i.e. it generates electrical energy from mechanical energy.
• This generated 48 kW per driveline is fed into the power distribution system (DC link with MAN logo in the centre).
• There, the total of 92 kW (2 x 48 kW) is distributed to the following consumers: 1 x 11 kW to the hotel grid (for example for the refrigerator, air conditioning and ventilation, charging and radio equipment, lighting, etc.), 2 x 40 kW are fed into the batteries.

Hybrid driving couldn't be easier or more convenient: With the MAN Smart HYBRID Experience, you can switch between all operating modes without interrupting power. The MAN Smart HYBRID Experience automatically adjusts the engine speeds between conventional and electric drive modes. All you have to do is select the operating mode and confirm it. It can be that simple when the best of conventional drives is combined with batteries.

• Continuous torque on the propeller

A passenger ferry or pilot boat departs from a harbour purely electrically. As soon as it is on the open sea, it accelerates with the help of diesel engines. During the journey, however, it switches imperceptibly back to electric operation. Intelligent control of the speeds synchronises them to avoid sudden and unwanted changes in speed.

PRE-DEVELOPMENT ON THE TEST BENCH FOR THE BEST RESULT

A perfectly harmonised system even before installation.

The perfect integration of the MAN Smart HYBRID Experience into the system landscape is, among other things, the result of extensive test bench tests: the test bench makes it possible to simulate various operating conditions that can occur in real-life use. This includes different loads, speeds, temperatures and environmental conditions.

This flexibility also makes it possible to simulate extreme conditions and thus identify potential problems or weak points at an early stage. This reduces the risk of malfunctions or failures in real use and saves time and costs during installation and commissioning. As the quantity and quality of engine data collected on the test bench is obtained faster and more accurately, the performance of the engine or system can also be analysed more precisely. This in turn helps to optimise parameters such as fuel consumption, torque, emissions and thermal efficiency and to coordinate these with the power management system. This is the only way to guarantee an efficient and powerful product.

Structure of the MAN Smart Hybrid Experience

Diesel engine.

Available series are D2862 (V12), D2868 (V8) or D2676 (in-line six-cylinder) with outputs up to 1,471 kW (2,000 HP).

Separates the diesel engine from the electric motor/generator unit. The MAN Smart HYBRID Experience enables the clutch to be engaged and disengaged without interrupting the power and therefore a smooth transition without jerking.

E-motor/alternator unit

With an efficiency of up to 96 per cent, the electric motor/generator unit can generate a rated output of 200 kW or 400 kW.

Numerous gearbox configurations such as V-Drive, IV-Drive, parallel gearbox and Down Angle are possible.

Scalable power through modular concept

The MAN Smart HYBRID Experience draws on a wide range of MAN Engines' engine portfolio.

REDUCTION OF EMISSIONS

A wide range of options with the man smart hybrid experience.

All combustion engines with which the MAN Smart HYBRID Experience can be configured are approved for use with renewable diesel in accordance with the EN15940 standard in Europe and the US specification ASTM D975 of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). This allows customers to replace conventional petroleum-based diesel fuel and use so-called green or renewable diesel or HVO (Hydrated Vegetable Oils) instead. This reduces CO2 emissions by around 90 per cent.

In zero-emission mode, the energy supply for the drive and on-board power is exclusively battery-electric. This also has a positive effect on local noise and exhaust emissions.
