OTB: Lewes Yacht Club
On the boards.
Founded in 1932, Lewes Yacht Club was born of the idea to form a sailing association. Since then, the Club has been a place where members have met to create lasting memories with family and friends. As lifestyles evolve, the Club leadership acknowledged the need to continuously improve, embrace change, and proactively plan for the future.
The Club’s Master Planning Committee has been working hard to collect and prioritize ideas. As the ideas evolved to the point that they were ready to be turned into designs, the Committee engaged Chambers to develop and further define a Master Plan that expands and modernizes their facilities and enhances the overall Lewes Yacht Club experience.
OUR APPROACH
Members’ top priority was to replace the outdated Pool House (constructed in 1987). Chambers developed a new, three-story structure that connects to the existing clubhouse. The new building will primarily maintain the existing footprint and site parking of the existing structure and will be designed with interior and exterior aesthetics that complement and enhance the existing architecture and design of the Clubhouse.
The objectives for the new Pool House include enhancing the entry experience with improved connection from the exterior to the upper level of the Clubhouse. The design provides members with modern showers, changing areas, and restrooms including incorporating unisex Family Restroom / Changing Rooms for increased privacy for families with children. An expanded pool deck will provide needed space for additional lounges, tables, and chairs. In addition, plans include a Multi-Purpose Room to be used for private events (classes, presentations, parties, etc.) with an adjacent servery for easy access. Expanding the storage capacity to meet the demands for food, beverage, and seasonal storage has also been taken into consideration.
The Clubhouse will be renovated to enhance the member experience and accommodate member priorities identified in the 2019 Member Survey. This renovation will include a remodel and refresh of all interior décor and finishes throughout member spaces, as well as a significant terrace expansion, including a large, covered portion with retractable screened enclosure. The new feature is directly connected to the Bar/Lounge and Family Dining areas via operable glass walls providing an indoor-outdoor connection to the screened outdoor dining terrace. The new Bar/Lounge area features a large, cross-talk bar with adjacent table seating and soft seating.
The upper level dining areas will be reconfigured to allow for separate Bayview Room and Bar Lounge experiences. The current Outdoor Deck area will be rebuilt and expanded significantly while the current conference room and storage rooms will be removed to provide space for the new, multi-purpose area. The kitchen facilities will be enhanced to include an enlarged walk-in refrigerator, an updated Snack Kitchen equipment, and a new Employee Break Room.

The Lewes Yacht Club was founded in 1932 in a beautiful location at the mouth of the Delaware Bay. The busy marina is comprised of 70 boat slips. In 2008, GMB was asked to provide structural engineering services for a new bulkhead, breakwater, and boat ramp design, to include the following:
- Design of a replacement bulkhead / wave attenuators on the north side of the property. Preliminary designs for various bulkhead framing options include vinyl sheeting, timber sheeting, and different wale configurations.
- Design of a boat ramp at the south end of the property. The boat ramp is to be cast in place concrete.
- Design of a replacement bulkhead on the south side of the boat ramp adjacent to the existing residence.
- Design of a replacement wave attenuator bulkhead at the north side of the boat ramp. Proposed framing options included a double vertical pile system, as there is no tieback.

Choptank Community Health System, Inc.
We recently finished the second of three projects for which GMB won the bids in the last four years. I would like to thank Morgan Helfrich, Deane Townsend, and the entire GMB Team for their attention to detail, great communications skills, and mindfulness of budget. They are impressive to watch as they make great progress in the development of construction documents for our newest facility in Federalsburg. I look forward to the continued utilization of their knowledge, experience, and architectural skills to complete our Federalsburg project. I highly recommend GMB to anyone contemplating a building or renovation project of any size.

GMB routinely deploys a highly efficient design team that places a high emphasis on problem-solving, client needs, and budget goals. Based on my past professional experiences with GMB, I would highly recommend this firm.
Town of St. Michaels, MD
In 2020, GMB completed a DNR funded Harbor and Stormwater Infrastructure Study for the Town of St Michaels. This valuable study projected the flooding and sea level rise by 2050 and then identified at risk areas and associated mitigation strategies for our main harbor and adjacent infrastructure. This was the valuable foundation the Town Commissioners needed for their planning and developed community awareness and support. Building on this study, the Town of St Michaels created the Climate Change/ Sea Level Rise Commission to pursue grants to implement these mitigation plans. Thanks to GMB’s study, the Town has been successful in pursuing grant funding.
Harper & Sons, Inc.
For over 35 years, our firm has appreciated the outstanding engineering and architecture that GMB can be trusted to deliver. Project after project, we have found their designs to be sound and thoughtful. We’ve experienced the same successful outcomes while executing design-build and traditional general contracted projects – a ‘nuts and bolts’ design approach with excellent constructability, functionality, and pleasing atheistic that benefit both the constructor and project owner. We highly recommend GMB for any commercial, institutional, or civil construction project.

Lewes Yacht Club
The Lewes Yacht Club (LYC) was founded in 1932 to encourage water sports, boating, casual sailing, and promote racing competition. The Club is enriched by its history and traditions yet has a casual and relaxed atmosphere. LYC is situated at the mouth of the Delaware Bay, which feeds into the Atlantic Ocean. The Club hosts Sunday races in everything from Sunfish and Mobjacks to Open Bics, Zumas and Optis for junior racers. They also co-host the Annual Cape-to-Cape Challenge Race, between LYC and the Corinthian Yacht Club of Cape May, NJ.
Stories from Lewes Yacht Club
Lewes Yacht Club began as an idea for a sailing association that was proposed to Marjorie Virden by George Davisson. There were 17 charter members, including Richard Reese, Sr., who became the first Commodore. In 1934 membership grew to 82. Dues were $3.00, with a $1.00 initiation fee. Four years later, the first clubhouse was completed on donated land; and was expanded and renovated over the years until March 22, 1962, when a devastating Nor’easter took its toll on the building. Reconstruction the next year began a period of growth for LYC. A marina was built on the canal side in 1969, and in 1982 the Club started their sailing school. Later a pool and shop were built. In 2003, the old clubhouse was demolished to make way for a new, modern facility.
