Pybus Point Lodge is proud to announce the official launching of two brand new, catamaran style, fishing and touring boats from ACI Boats. This is the second time we’ve had the pleasure of working with ACI and once again, they exceeded our expectations. Since we run a premium fishing and adventure lodge, we don’t just have to worry about our boats being safe and functional–we also have to make sure that our boats have the style and comfort that our guests expect.

ACI Boats is thrilled to announce the official award of a $3 million dollar contract with American Samoa’s Departmant of Commerce for four “Super Alia” commercial fishing vessels. All four boats will be manufactured at ACI Boats’ facility in Port Townsend, WA. The vessels themselves will be 38’x14’ semi-displacement catamarans, designed by ACI Boats and Coastwise Marine Design. The first of the four vessels, to be completed in Fall/Winter 2022, will be used as a training platform for boat owners, captains, and deckhands. The following three boats, will be completed over the course of 18 months and will then be available for lease by the American Samoa Dept. of Commerce, intended to support the growth and safety of the local fishing fleet.

STATE-OF-THE-ART Facility

Approximately 85 miles North of Seattle, All American Marine’s production facility is located along the Northern shore side of Bellingham Bay in Bellingham, Washington. In early 2017, AAM moved into the brand new, purpose-built 57,000 square foot boat construction facility located on Squalicum Harbor, allowing for multiple vessels of varying sizes to be in construction simultaneously with staggered production schedules.

BRIX Marine’s reliable construction shines nowhere better than in its landing craft designs.

Where through the rigors of beaching, loading, and transporting, toughness and reliability are essential. Choose a platform that will run for decades of utility transport needs, choose a BRIX.

Waterjet propulsion makes landing operations possible on even the shallowest beaches with this 37’ catamaran. The hull structure provides a sizeable foredeck as well as a comfortable ride for up to fifteen passengers in the aft-situated cabin. The vessel can be boarded either via the jet guard at the stern or through the hydraulic bow door, which can be lowered or raised with controls at both the bow and the helm station. Lifting eyes incorporated to the interior hull sides facilitate transportation to landlocked or distant locations.

The signature foredeck of a landing craft is accompanied by a comfortable cabin on the 3814-CTC, with seating for 12, an onboard head, and two convertible benches for overnight berths. The small pilothouse on the aft deck of this 40’ landing craft expands usable deck space to its fullest. Designed for use in the aquaculture field, a bench with tank storage and a ladder mounted on the T-transom enable diving operations, while the hydraulic bow door makes the deployment of divers and equipment easy and ergonomic. A removable davit and side boarding doors on each side further assists cargo loading, as heavy-duty push knees and a tow post add to the vessel’s capabilities. Once beached and laden, an aft windlass combined with a kedging anchor can be used to help pull the boat back into the water.

A true “Swiss Army knife” of boats, the 4615-HTC was originally designed as a utility landing craft with full bow-picker function for gillnet operations. A gillnet reel mounted to the fore deck, bow roller, and davit mounted pinch hauler sustain fishing operations, while deck tie downs and extra-wide hydraulic bow door with hinged extension facilitate ergonomic hauling maneuvers. The aft-set cabin features seating for 15, as well as a bunk room for 4, head with walk-in shower, full-service galley, and convertible dinette. Further outfitted with engine guards, removable tow post at the extended T-transom, and a rooftop dinghy storage rack, this vessel maximizes adaptability for a variety of workboat operations.

When it comes to transporting passengers and cargo, Brix Marine’s 47’ classic tunnel catamaran (CTC) provides the definitive platform, perfect for ferrying payloads, landing excursion tours along the beach, or cruising on sightseeing trips alike. With seating for 30 inside the cabin, an onboard head, and small counter for coffee or snacks, passengers will enjoy the ride in comfort. In addition to its large foredeck, the 4715-CTC is also configurable with rooftop kayak rack, push knees, engine guards, and heavy-duty rub strakes.

When a shallow draft and overall displacement are paramount to the benefits of a catamaran, a monohull landing craft is an excellent option.

Made for high speed operations, the 5216-RCM serves as a highly maneuverable platform. Triple waterjets provide a shallow draft underway, and the wide hydraulic ramp design allows for vehicle loading directly on and off the vessel from the shoreline. Designed to serve between multiple islands in unprotected water, low gunnels ease hauling cargo over the side, as large freeing ports keep water out. The offset pilot house maximizes available deck space, granting this vessel the ability to transport greater payload in less trips.

The 6218-RCM’s most appealing aspect is its vast foredeck, boasting a 40,000 lb. capacity essential to ferry operations. Capable of transporting large trucks and full-size excavators, this monohull is powered via triple engines and waterjets, which when used in union with the full-width bow ramp, render even shallow water beaching operations possible. Utilizing custom built self-contained cabins, or “passenger pods,” this vessel also adheres to USCG compliance, and is approved to convey three pods of 12 commuters each on its foredeck.

CAT OR TRI?

“CATS have become more popular for cruising mainly because of the accommodation space and privacy they provide and because for a given length they are faster and cheaper to build than a trimaran.  TRIS, on the other hand, provide good performance through a wider range of conditions than catamarans, and can also be effective for cruising by utilizing flare above the waterline in the main hull, and by fitting aft cabins where additional privacy is required in the accommodation layout. Apart from the accommodation, the trimaran provides a more forgiving motion in a sea way and better resistance to pitching if the hull shapes are well designed, and the wide beam allows it to carry more sail in fresh conditions. Against these advantages is the fact that a cat will require less berthing space and is likely to be more maneuverable in close quarters if twin diesels are fitted. Also, the cat will have a more steady motion than a tri while sailing downwind.”

I built my first multihull in the 70’s and it was a Trimaran, foam cored, TriStar design, a great multihull.  Now I am building a cat for my wife and I, mainly because of the room, very wide main salon and stateroom and big aft deck and flybridge.  The Tri was maybe a bit more sea kindly than the cat will be, but besides not having to build a third hull, she will be a bit faster as well as maybe a bit more economical.

Can I have what I want ?

But you must stay in the boundaries of the designer structural requirements i.e.. mast placement, weight to be carried and where. All the multihulls we have built over the last 42 years, have been what the clients have wanted, inside and out. Once they find the size they think will work, we find the basic design and designer for their dream platform to create it.

The final look is up to you, either with your drawing or pictures or work with one of several concept artists we know to help. Same with the interior, your interior designer, pictures or cut out from magazine of things you would like or we can line you up with someone to help. You work directly with these people, pay them directly to go as far as you want or need to, the do not work for Pedigree.

How long does it take to build your dream?

Based on our first price estimate, a basic 60′ power or sail typically takes about 24 months. This would be a very nice Cat, but not a lot of fancy, expensive items on board (gold faucets etc.) Engines, hydraulic steering, electric heads, windlass, gen.set, etc., very nice, but not a lot of goodies. The second price we show is with almost everything clients really want onboard, Watermaker, A/C, Shore boat, TV (s), fancy wood decor and custom items and electronics. This, of course, also adds more time to construct, maybe 6 months, You can also have us build to a certain stage and you take her home and finish the build or stretch out the time to build to fit your schedule or investments. If you add 6 months to each of these times, it would be for a 75′-85′ and 6 months to that and you would be in the 100′ range.

Taking her home from here or maybe cruise the San Juan islands, inside passage to Alaska first. Clients have also taken them to Vancouver and had them shipped to Florida or hire a crew to deliver them to where they want.

Why does Pedigree Catamarans, Inc. post our prices online?

We have been building multihulls since 1975 and we know how many hours each boat should take to build, even custom boats since we do not build production boats.  Other companies may not have built or built enough boats to determine the cost.  Granted boat costs vary directly with the customer’s requirements, however the hull build should not vary much.

Also, we do not have “salesmen.”   We are a owner/operated business that talks directly with each customer based on our 42 years of boating and cruising experience.  We believe that you want a cat of your own, not what a production builder thinks everyone should have.

I would be very leery of a company who wants large deposits up front and can’t provide basic prices to a customer.  What we are hearing now from people that have paid a large deposit up front, only find the builder wants more and more and exceeded their guess of the cost and time line.  Then the worst, they want more money or they will sell the cat to someone else, holding it for ransom from the highest bidder,  Our clients chose to pay as we build and the cat is 100% theirs from the start and definitely no large deposit up front. 

How much does a custom catamaran cost?

The cost of a custom Pedigree catamaran, constructed with foam core, composite construction is very close to that of a production built yacht.  The advantage is, you will have exactly what you want and the disadvantage is, it will take a little while to build.

Charter cats are generally a lot less expensive. They do not need the big ticket luxury items, such as water makers, A/C, big gen. sets, fancy interiors, etc.

When we have an opening to start a new project, you can have just the hulls built and finish the catamaran yourself at a considerable savings at your home port.  If you wish, we can provide you with a cat at what ever stage you like. For example, we can fit the engines and aide in completion and when you are ready to launch, we can arrange that as well.

Most of our catamarans are fully loaded and ready for cruising.  We have listed the average cost clients have spent on our amenities and pricing page. Over the last 20 years, the clients have chosen to pay as we build and they have approved to have done as well as what we purchase for them, engines etc.. 

All and all, we can provide just about anything you and your budget can imagine. Our goal is to get you out there to enjoy the fun with  the exact Catamaran you have always wanted.

I think we are about the only builder that shows you the price you might spend on you dream, it’s up to you and what you want and need.

Why do Production Cats depreciate so much more than a quality custom built cat?

Several reasons. One might be, that every cat produced is probably from the same mold and in most cases, several years old and not updated or no improvements incorporated over any previously produced. Thus no real reason to get a new one if you can get the same one used for a lot less. The owners must lower their asking price far enough below the new ones that it will make it desirable. The price on the same new cat, next year, must be in line pricewise, in the marketing field to be sold, thus last years model must be substantially lower.

The production cats do not provide the clients with what they expected in a catamaran. Lacking in performance, require a lot of power to move them at a reasonably expected speed, to narrow to give the stability and the room onboard they were led to believe they would have. Deeper draft than expected, very heavy solid fiberglass construction, noisy, sinkable, sweat and hard to maintain a comfortable temperature inside. Most are imported and can not be used for charter in US waters.

One of our custom built multihulls came up for sale, built in 1980 and sold for $60,000 more than it cost the owners to have it built back then.

Even today, we have people trying to buy the clients cat we are constructing from the client and at a substantial amount more than they have into their dream. Problem is, this is their dream and it is not up for sale.

Gary habersetzer started building multihulls in 1975 in washington..

In the late 70’s, the first Airex foam core Trimaran in the USA, a TriStar 42′ “Amenity” was built by Gary.  The designer, Ed Horstman was as excited as he was to build a composite Multihull and ended up writing an instruction manual based on Airex information in conjunction with ABS standards.  At that time, there was no one in the USA that was building composite Multihulls.

When choosing a sailboat, the brand can make a big difference in quality, performance, and resale value. But picking the “best sailboat brand” means swimming through a lot of different kinds of boats with different intended purposes. Are you looking for a large luxury offshore cruising boat or small production daysailer? Do you want a monohull or a catamaran? Are you looking to buoy racer or weekend cruiser?

Although we can’t address all brands and all their uses, we can segment out monohulls from catamarans and address production boats versus luxury brands. Here are some you’ll see on the water and find in peer-to-peer sharing services like Boatsetter.

Also under the Beneteau Group umbrella, Jeanneau is renowned for its stylish, performance-oriented sailboats. They offer a broad range of boats that appeal to both casual sailors and competitive racers with models ranging 30-65 feet. Both Beneteau and Jeanneu now build sailboats as well as powerboats.

Another French builder is Dufour that produces versatile, stylish sailboats with a good balance between performance and comfort. This brand is popular among cruising families and casual sailing racers. Dufour was founded in 1964, so they too have a long history on the water and offer reliable models 37-61 feet.

4. Catalina

An American builder, Catalina Yachts offers models 12-44 feet. These coastal cruisers used to be built on the West Coast so you can spot a lot of older versions on the Pacific Ocean. Catalina is focused on easy-maintain and easy-to-handle boats that are family weekending favorites. Dealerships are harder to find these days but today, Catalina will build you a boat in Florida if you inquire.

Oyster is a British luxury builder of serious offshore bluewater cruising yachts and has an excellent reputation with those who want to globetrot in style and make long safe passages. The brand is synonymous with quality and attention to detail. They specialize in building larger passagemakers 49-88 feet and are an exceptional choice for distance cruising if you have a serious budget.

A volume production builder from Germany, Bavaria is known for durable cruisers that are good both with charter fleets and in private ownership. Today, Bavaria offers heavy-duty sailing monohulls 37-57 feet although they also build powerboats.

Another German production builder is Hanse known for sleek modern designs with innovative systems and performance hulls. Hanse has easy-to-handle rigs with self-tacking jibs which makes short-handed sailing a breeze. Hanse has a sister company named Moody which builds comfortable cruising models based on many of the same Hanse hulls.

8. Hallberg-Rassy

A legacy brand, Hallber-Rassy is known for their quality and traditional designs capable of offshore work. This durable Swedish brand has a robust construction and commands a higher price. They’re better known in Europe than in the US and they don’t build in the same kind of volume as many of the production brands so they’re harder to spot.

9. Nautor Swan

A name that has been synonymous with high performance and luxury is Finland’s Nautor Swan. They’re a pedigreed brand with elegant design and renown craftsmanship. Swan was purchased by Italian luxury builder San Lorenzo in the summer of 2024. Their models range 48-65 feet and they have a maxi division that builds superyachts 80-128 feet.

Multihulls:  

A segment of cruising sailboats are multihulls, specifically catamarans. Here are popular production cat builders and three extra brands that will make you look twice.

Perhaps the best-known production catamaran brand is Lagoon which is part of the Beneteau umbrella and has been building models since 1987. These models do heavy work in charter around the world so if you see a cat on the water, it’s a good bet that it’s a Lagoon. Offered in lengths 40-78 feet, Lagoon is a volume builder that develops both sail and power multihulls.

Nautitech Open

Nautitech is a French company that was briefly owned by German Bavaria. Now they’re on their own again and espouse Marc Lombard design. They’re known for unique interior layouts that maximize outdoor social spaces. These stylish cats of 40-48 feet have sleek profiles with angular windows, a lowcoachroof and powerful hull sections. Able to sail 10 knots in 15-20 knots of true wind, these bluewater cats are happy to go around the harbor or around the world.

Fountaine Pajot

The French seem to own the world of sailing cats since another powerhouse production brand is Fountaine Pajot which is also a sister brand with monohull builder Dufour mentioned above. The new designs are built for large groups on charter or for families. Cabin arrangements are flexible from an owner’s version with a sumptuous suite all the way to a five-cabin layout that will accommodate 10 guests with ease.

Balance is a premium builder of bluewater performance multihulls designed to carry a good turn of speed on all points of sail which is assisted by foiled daggerboards that make easy work of upwind sailing. Self-tacking rigs and the versatile VersaHelm make driving these serious models a snap. Balance currently builds three models 44-52 feet with three larger models on the drawing board.

When a budget can stretch, sailors reach for upmarket build-to-order ubercats like HH Catamarans produced in China. These boats carry daggerboards and carbon rigs and are great for serious racing as well as distance cruising. These models have a carbon construction to be strong and lightweight and few multihulls will raise an eyebrow quite like an HH sailing by in a flash. Luxury designs are available in 44-88 feet.

NEEL Trimarans

When two hulls aren’t enough, consider a trimaran. Tris are typically faster than cats but have unique and sometimes challenging onboard layouts. When small and designed for racing, tris like the Dragonfly brand are fast and fun. In contrast, French company NEEL builds large cruising tris that reels off the miles and provide lots of space for cruising necessities. NEEL’s current portfolio includes models 43-52 feet with a flagship coming at 65 feet.

Each of these sailing brands has its strengths, whether you’re looking for a comfortable cruiser, a performance-oriented racer, or a luxury bluewater multihull. The best choice depends on your needs, sailing style, and budget.

San Diego, CA: Founded in 1886, San Diego Yacht Club has a rich history and has been a central part of the sailing community in Southern California for over a century. The SDYC outstation located on Catalina Island offers members moorage and docking to take advantage of the amenities and activities this serene and scenic location has to offer. Their 24’ Munson is used for ferry patrons and equipment from moorage to the island. Outfitting includes removable seats on the main deck, side embarkation steps, recessed tie down points in the main deck, tow post, motor guard and a Garmin MFD.

Harpswell, ME: Harpswell Fire & Rescue is responsible for emergency response operations on land contiguous with Cumberland County, called Harpswell Neck, as well as Orr’s Island, Great Island, Bailey Island and over 200 smaller islands.   Their 24’ Munson is used to transport first responders to remote locations inaccessible by road.   Outfitting includes a 3” thru-hull with camlock fitting for plumbing portable fire pumps, tow post, engine guard, push knees, Whelen light bar, dual spot lights, flood lights and bow lights.

Concord, CA: Military Ocean Terminal Concord (MOTCO) is the primary West Coast ammunition terminal for the US Military. The Concord Federal Fire Dept. selected this 24’ Munson for fire/rescue operations along its 5 miles of shoreline. A Munson “Fire Ant” self-contained skid mounted 500 GPM fire pump was provided to allow the fire pump system to be quickly removed/installed on the main deck when needed. Additional outfitting includes side dive doors, 2 dive ladders, tow post, engine guard and trailer.

Mesa, AZ: Maricopa County Sheriff’s Lake Patrol overseas 1000 square miles and dozens of popular lakes in Southern Arizona. They selected this 24’ Munson for dive/rescue operations. Kansas City, MO: The US Army Corps of Engineers Kansas City District manages 500 miles of the Missouri River. Their 24’ Munson is used as a hydrographic survey boat with aft moon pool and derrick for deploying a 45 lb. Reson 8124 multibeam transducer at survey speeds of 12-15 mph. Additional outfitting includes a Honda 6500 watt generator, 1000 watt inverter, air conditioned cabin with 3 work stations, motor guard, and triple axle trailer.

LaConner, WA: The Swinomish Indian Tribal Fisheries Office operates two Munson Boats including this 24’ used for research diving, crab test fisheries, intertidal clam surveys and oyster farming. Outfitting includes an enclosed cabin with port side work station, 3” pipe davit with 12V windlass, side dive door, dive bottle racks, dive ladder, Garmin 741xs plotter/sounder, VHF and trailer.

Sacramento, CA: The US Army Corps of Engineers operates this 24’ as a crew boat and for aids to navigation maintenance. Outfitting includes a walk-through cabin with seating for six, cabin heater, 1000 lb lifting davit with 12V windlass, wash down pump, Furuno radar, plotter, sounder, VHF radio, and triple axle trailer. A folding radar mast minimizes the height overall to 10 feet when on the trailer.

Ketchikan, AK: M/V Paige Two transports her owners and guests to and from their remote island cabin in Southeast Alaska. Outfitting includes seating for 4 passengers, pot hauler, kicker motor, downrigger mounts, rod holders, fish cleaning table, Raymarine plotter/sounder, VHF, cell phone booster antenna, spot light, and trailer.

Valletta, Malta: This 24’ Munson serves as a yacht tender for the 77m superyacht M/V Yersin. Outfitting includes a four point lifting system, side boarding doors, anchor windlass with pulpit, dive bottle racks, dive ladder, trim tabs, battery charger, block heater and oil change pump. Electronics include a Simrad NSE8 plotter with integrated radar, sounder, class B AIS, and VHF radio. A canvas boat cover and cradle was supplied for storage on the mothership.

Sinclair Island, WA: Sinclair Island is one of many islands located in the San Juan archipelago that does not have public ferry service and is only accessible by private boat. M/V Island Time transports her owners and guests to and from their island home. Outfitting includes a walk-through cabin with seating for six, aft cockpit cross seat locker, Garmin 740s plotter/sounder, and hydraulic transom jack plates for raising the motors vertically when beaching.

Outfitting includes a walk around cabin with forced air heater, dive bottle racks, dive ladder, tow post, davit, Lowrance HDS-9 GPS with side scan sonar, and Flir night vision camera.

Orcas Island, WA: Located on the northwest tip of Orcas Island, YMCA Camp Orkila has been connecting youth and families to the outdoors with more than 280 acres of private beach, preserved forest and open fields. The M/V Whale Fish landing craft is outfitted with perimeter deck seating, hydraulic transom jack for shallow water operations, and Yakima kayak racks for transporting 2 tandem kayaks.

Orland, CA: The Army Corps of Engineers based at Black Butte Lake in California operate this Munson as a general purpose utility vessel. It is called into duty as a search and rescue support boat when necessary. A special draining stretcher locker was installed on the T-top roof to protect stretchers from the elements and was designed for easy retrieval of stretchers. The single Honda 250 outboard was selected for maximum range and an impressive top speed.

Baker Lake, WA: The Mt. Baker National Recreation Area is an impressive mountain landscape on the southeast flank of Mt. Baker. Baker Lake is a great place for hunting, fishing, and many other recreational activities. The forest service is responsible for maintaining public facilities frequented by visitors. Mt. Baker forest rangers operate this Munson during their maintenance of campgrounds and other water-only attractions.

Friday Harbor, WA: San Juan Pest Control Service operates their Munson as a transport vessel within the San Juan Islands as a transport and crew boat. The open-back wheelhouse features a canvas enclosure for cold weather operation. A 30 gallon washdown tank with electric pump is located on the front deck. Other features include an electric start kicker with a fuel pickup on the main tank, side boarding doors, and roof mounted ladder racks.

Abu Dhabi, UAE: This 24’ Packcat is used as a tender for a superyacht in the Middle East. Four point lifting eyes allow the vessel to be launched and retrieved from the main deck. Port and starboard side doors allow for ease of boarding and diving operations. Additional outfitting includes bow and stern anchor windlasses, 2 dive ladders, dive bottle racks, Raymarine electronics and canvas enclosure for the center console.

Port Angeles, WA: The Olympic National Parks Department run this Munson as a workboat with duties that include patrols, dive operations, search and rescue and as a transport for equipment and personnel. Equipment includes a walk-around wheelhouse, bow door dive ladder, dive bottle storage racks, Garmin GPSMAP chartplotter/sounder, and GoLIGHT 2020 remote search lighting with remote control pad on cabin roof.

Kelso, WA: The Cowlitz County Sheriff's Department operates this Munson as a workboat with duties that include patrols, dive operations, search and rescue and as a transport for equipment and personnel. Equipment includes a walk-around wheelhouse, bow door dive ladder, dive bottle storage racks, Garmin GPSMAP chartplotter/sounder, and a hinging roof ladder that allows SWAT team members to climb up to roof during the boarding of large commercial vessels.

Southport, NC: The Sunny Point Fire Department operates this Munson as a fire and rescue boat. Capabilities include dive support and ATV transport. The SPF SAR boat is outfitted with a 48" wide console T-top, 26" wide side doors, 3" tow post, motor guard/tow line guide, Whelen 17" LED light bar, and two Go Light 2020 400,000 CP search lights with control pads. A 4" pickup installed in the hull allows crews to operate a removable fire pump.

Montgomery, AL: The Alabama Water Science Center conducts hydrologic projects that address a wide variety of water-resources issues, including water supply, ground-water contamination, and the effects of land use on water quality. The Alabama USGS Munson is outfitted with Kohler 5EKD generator, roof mounted air conditioner, lifting davit, and a Garmin 4210 navigation system with GPS, Radar, and sonar capability.

San Francisco, CA: The Pier 39 Marina operates this Munson Utility as a multi-purpose workboat with duties that include routine maintenance, harbor cleanup, biological research, and vessel rescue in the harbor. Equipment includes bench seat storage lockers on the main deck, deck flood lighting, and push knees with a removable cross brace. The removable brace is designed for pushing stricken vessels without damage to either craft.

Valdez, AK: The City of Valdez Harbormaster selected this 24’ Munson as a pump-out and harbor workboat. A Keco 325 gallon skid mounted marine pump-out system with lifting eyes can be quickly installed on board and removed when not needed. Additional outfitting includes a tow post, engine guard, push knees, EZ Loader trailer and soft fendering system for working alongside other vessels.

Vancouver, BC: Crosby Marine provides a wide range of marine services for film, television, commercial and video projects. M/V Mini Me was custom built for the film industry and is used as a multifunctional support vessel such as crew shuttle, fog, safety, or camera boat. The landing craft bow door and two side doors make this vessel almost indispensable on set. A tilting console windshield keeps the operator cool while underway.

Seattle, WA: Established in 1902, the Bureau of Reclamation is best known for the dams, power plants, and canals it constructed in the 17 western states. Reclamation is also the second largest producer of hydroelectric power in the western United States. They operate a Munson model throughout the Western United States conducting underwater inspection and repairs of hydroelectric dams and associated facilities.

San Diego, CA: The San Diego City Lakes Ranger District operates a Munson during their oversight of freshwater lakes and reservoirs. They collaborate with the FBI and Border Patrol during homeland security and evidence gathering missions. The forward deck was designed for the easy transport and loading of a UTV. Special features include a flip out dive ladder, extended cabin roof, heavy duty to post and tow protection screen.

The Adygea Republic (alternate spelling: Adygeya ) is a federal subject of the Russian Federation, part of the Southern Federal District. The republic is an enclave within Krasnodar Krai.

Maykop is the capital city of the region.

The population of the Adygea Republic is about 468,300 (2022), the area - 7,792 sq. km.

History of the Adygea Republic

The territory of Adygea has been inhabited since ancient times. Abadzehskaya Paleolithic site is located in Maykop district. Also there are a lot of archaeological sites of Bronze and Iron Ages. Maykop archaeological culture is well known.

A lot of unique items were found during the excavation of the hills near the village of Ulyap in Krasnogvardeysky district. Most of the precious items excavated while Adygea was part of Krasnodar krai and known as “Scythian gold” or “Kuban gold” can be found in museums outside of Adygea.

The indigenous Adyg population’s ancestors are considered to be ancient Meots, Sinds, Aheys, Zikhs, Kasogs, and Kerkets residing in the region. As a result of the Caucasian wars (1763-1864), the majority of the Adygs (Circassians) were exiled to the Ottoman Empire. The rest of the Adygs were settled in the lowlands, on the left bank of the Kuban River.

Adygea was formed on July 27, 1922 as Cherkesskaya (Adygeyskaya) Autonomous Oblast (province) with the center in Krasnodar. From August 24, 1922 till August 13, 1928, it was Adygeyskaya (Cherkesskaya) Autonomous Oblast, and then Adygeyskaya Autonomous Oblast.

From August 2, 1924 till December 28, 1934, it was part of the North Caucasian krai, then, till September 13, 1937, part of Azov-Chernomorsky krai and finally - part of Krasnodar krai.

April 10, 1936, Maykop became the capital of the region. April 28, 1962, Tulsky (now Maikopsky) district of Krasnodar krai was joined to the region. October 5, 1990, Adygeyskaya Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was declared. Since 1992, it is the Republic of Adygea.

In December 1991 - January 1992, deputies of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Adygea were elected. It was the first Parliament in the history of Adygea. In 1993, it was reformed into Legislative Assembly (Khase) and, in 1995, - into State Council - Khase. The Constitution of the Republic of Adygea was adopted by Legislative Assembly - Khase on March 10, 1995.

The Adygea Republic - Features

Adygea is located in the northern foothills of the Caucasus Mountains. The northern part of the region consists mainly of plains while the southern part has mountains. The main river of the region is the Kuban River. The highest mountains are Chugush (3,238 meters) and Fisht (2,868 meters).

The climate is moderately warm, the average temperature in January is minus 2 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 28 degrees Celsius.

The republic is rich in forest resources, which occupy more than one third of the republic’s territory (the southern part), and building materials (gravel, sand, clay, limestone). The republic has small reserves of natural gas. In the mountainous part of the republic there are small deposits of gold, ore materials.

Adygea is an industrial-agrarian republic with such industries as food processing, woodworking, pulp and paper, mechanical engineering and metalworking. The basis of the agro-industrial production is crop production, pig, sheep, poultry, and horse breeding. Several railways pass through the territory of the republic.

National composition of the population according to the 2010 census: Russians (63.6%), Adygs (Circassians) (25.8%), Armenians (3.7%). Most of the population of Adygea profess Orthodoxy and Islam. The Slavic population - Orthodox Christians, Circassians - Sunni Muslims.

There are two local universities in the republic: Adygea State University and Maikop State Technological University.

Attractions of the Adygea Republic

Adygea is included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. This region is rich in waterfalls, caves, rock formations suitable for climbing, gorges, canyons, rivers, alpine meadows, pine and fir forests.

The territory of the republic is a region of mixed tourism. It is rich in interesting natural areas and objects: the Caucasian State Biosphere Reserve located in the Republic of Adygea and Krasnodar krai, the National Park “Gornaya (Mountainous) Adygea”, a number of unique natural sites.

Khadzhokhsky Gorge, a canyon of the Belaya River, begins in the vicinity of Maikop. Near the canyon there are waterfalls of the Rufabgo stream.

In the mountain village of Guzeripl, on the territory of the Caucasus Nature Reserve, you can find one of the most famous dolmens, they can also be found on Bogatyrskaya glade. There are sites of ancient man, remains of fortresses, alpine gardens, and sources of mineral water “narzan”, which in Circassian means “drink of the gods (narts).”

Adygea is a great place to practice active tourism: hang gliding, caving, rafting, mountain climbing, rock climbing, hiking, canyoning.
