According to Wikipedia, the ship was evacuated of passengers and non-essential crew in March 2020 due to concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic. It will return to service in July 2021.

According to Wikipedia, the ship was the brainchild of Knut Kloster, whose family has a long history in the maritime industry.

Öresundsvarvet built the hull in Landskrona, Sweden, and towed it to Fosen Mekaniske Verksted in Rissa, Norway, for completion.

The World was founded in March 2002 and bought by its residents in October 2003.

It also set a world record on January 28, 2017, for being the southernmost ship, which was later surpassed by the icebreaker Laura Bassi in February 2023.

This was accomplished by her captain, the 63 residents on board at the time, as well as crew members.

The ship arrived at 78°43•997’S and 163°41 421 W at the Bay of Whales in Antarctica’s Ross Sea.

It has 165 residences, including 106 apartments, 19 studio apartments, and 40 studios, all owned by ship residents.

It is run by an elected board of directors.

It has everything a cruise ship has, including a massive lobby, a deck with a mini-shopping mall, a fitness centre, a golf simulator, an impressive tennis court, a running track, a swimming pool, a library, and, of course, cocktail lounges for the nightlife.

The Cape is a popular tourist destination because some of its residents are South African.

In a recent media interview, The World’s spokesperson stated that the vessel had been to South Africa seven times.

She was quoted as saying that while residents visited various towns and ports throughout South Africa, they would be able to appreciate its beauty by visiting historical sites and venues.

A South African resident told the Mossel Bay Advertiser that he chose to live on such a vessel because it allowed them to travel to new places each year.

Western authorities have imposed sanctions on more than 1,000 Russian individuals and businesses in response to President Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. South Africa has so far avoided directly criticizing Russia and abstained from several UN votes condemning the war.

Mordashov—the largest shareholder in the steelmaker Severstal and the third-richest man in Russia—has been targeted by the Western sanctions due to his ties with Putin. The billionaire maintains he has had no involvement in Russian politics and has been fighting the sanctions since May.

Nord Superyacht

Mordashov lost his 215-foot superyacht , Lady M , back in March after it was seized by Italian police. Nord is believed to be his biggest yacht asset, though. Indeed, the vessel, which is larger than a football field, features two helipads, a retractable hangar, a diving center, a swimming pool and 20 staterooms across six decks. It was delivered by German yard Lürssen in November 2020.

After leaving Hong Kong earlier this week, Nord is now en route to South Africa and is expected to moor in Cape Town on November 9, according to Marine Traffic data. The yacht was west of Indonesia as of Wednesday. You can track Nord ’s journey via Spire Maritime .

PPF is active across a wide range of sectors with investments spanning financial services, telecommunications, media, biotechnology, real estate, mobility and e-commerce, across Europe, Asia and North America.

Robertson and Caine was founded by John Robertson and the late Jerry Caine in 1991. The founders have a proud 37-year history of boat building with more than 2816 boats launched.

Our Sailing (42ft, 45ft and 50ft) and Power (40ft, 46ft and 53ft) catamarans are destined for the world's exotic sailing grounds; including the US East Coast, the Caribbean, Seychelles, Mediterranean, Asia, South Pacific and South America.

Robertson and Caine Leopard Catamaran Range

Born out of a heritage of producing bespoke racing yachts and production cruisers, from basic 36ft fiberglass mono-hulls to state-of-the-art carbon-fibre racing boats up to 70ft. The Team of John Robertson and Jerry Caine produced an impressive list of racers, globally recognised and all hand-built by master craftsmen in the Cape-based boatyard.

Moorings Fleet

Broomstick, the 70ft Simonis designed Maxi, won the Cape to Rio International Yacht Race in 1993 and Orion Express (Fast 42) impressed international racing enthusiasts on the world circuit.

International exposure drew the attention of The Moorings, which entered into an agreement with Robertson and Caine to manufacture superbly designed sailing catamarans for its global charter fleet.

To date, Robertson and Caine has evolved to a serious competitor in the international catamaran market and continues to enjoy a market leader position in the significant North American market.

In the 29-year relationship the South African yard has enjoyed with THL Marine - which encompasses the two largest yacht charter companies in the world, The Moorings and Sunsail - it has supplied more than 2816 catamarans. The advances in design of the different models have seen the catamarans winning numerous international awards.

Leopard Catamarans are also bought privately through THL Marine's Private Leopard Sales divisions, who have agents worldwide.

Robertson and Caine Inc, based in the Tampa Bay area in Florida, USA, is a subsidiary company of Robertson and Caine in South Africa. This USA office brings the company closer to its market in order to enhance sales and after-sales service.

Other functions of this office include a purchasing department for all components and equipment bought from suppliers in the USA and the facilitation of spare part purchases for boat owners. It also has an in-house technical and design department.

These award-winning catamarans are highly sought-after and enjoyed by the world's discerning sailing community due to the combination of the lifestyle experiences of the charter industry, the functional design by renowned naval architects and the hand craftsmanship of Robertson and Caine boat building.

It has some remarkable credits to its name: "Best Overall Import Boat in the USA 2005", "Best Multihull 40 feet and Under", Sail Magazine's "Best Boats 2005" and Cruising World magazine's "Charter Yacht of the Year 1998" for the Leopard 45 Catamaran. The Leopard 39 was named the "Best Multihull Cruiser" as well as the "Import of the Year" in the 2010 Boat of the Year awards. The Leopard 39 / Sunsail 384 won the "Sail Best Boats 2010" Cruising Multihull award.

More recently, the Leopard 50 was awarded “2019 Cruising World Boat of the Year Award: Best Charter Boat”. The Leopard 45, “2017 Cruising World Boat of the Year Award: Best Charter Boat” and the Leopard 43 Powercat was nominated for the European Power Boat of the Year.

In 2017 the new Leopard 45 won the Cruising World Boat of the Year Award for Best Charter Boat. 2019 the Leopard 50 awarded Cruising World Boat of the Year Award: Best Charter Boat. The Leopard 53 Power Cat awarded 2020 Multihull of the Year Award and in 2021 the Reader's Choice Award. 2022 The Leopard 42 was recognised by Boat of the Year Award as 2022 Best Cruising Catamaran Under 50' ∓ a winner of 2022 Multihull of the Year.

Southern Wind Shipyard

Located in Cape Town, South Africa, luxury yacht builder Southern Wind designs and manufactures sailing yachts from 21.9 to 35.05 metres in length.

History of Southern Wind Shipyard

Neopolitan entrepreneur Willy Persico led luxury yacht builder Cantieri Navali Rodriguez until 1990, when he decided to build a sailing yacht for himself. In looking for a shipyard to build that yacht, Aga Jari , designed by noted naval architect Ron Holland , led Persico to the shipyard Cenmarinein Cape Town. In 1991, Persico was able to purchase the shipyard and founded luxury sailing yacht builder Southern Wind. With a shipyard and a full staff with over 320 people, Southern Wind went on to produce composite sailing yachts with a combination of advanced technology and quality craftsmanship.

Notable Southern Wind Shipyard Builds

The success of the Farr 72 series, designed by well-known naval architects Farr Yacht Design , brought Southern Wind to the attention of the sailing world. In 2012, luxury yacht builder Southern Wind launched the sailing superyacht series SW 102, designed by Farr Yacht Design and Nauta Yacht Design , with Hull No. 1, Almagores II . Superyachts Atalante and Farfalla soon followed in the series.

Specialiations of Southern Wind Shipyard

Southern Wind utilises advanced composite construction, including carbon fibre and Kevlar, to ensure that every yacht created has the perfect balance between blue water capability, comfort, and performance.

Our Client's Experience

biggest yacht in cape town

While initially uncertain about buying through a broker, I’m very glad I did. Thomas was extremely helpful and responsive from the start. He addressed all queries I had in detail and has a wealth of knowledge which provides you as a buyer with comfort that you’re making an informed decision with confidence.

Thomas was able to guide on everything from registering a change in ownership of the vessel to finding a mooring for her going out of his way to help. He also struck a pragmatic balance between buyer and seller to close the deal in a way where both sides felt their interests were covered. As a result, I’d highly recommend Thomas for any sale or purchase of a sailing boat.
