Westerly Yachts have a reputation for designing and building strong sea-kindly yachts.  

This Westerly Tempest is no exception. It is clear from the moment you step aboard that she appears to be a well cared for yacht by the current and previous owners. She is looking a little green at the moment having spent time in a boatyard over the winter. Unfortunately due to the current owner's health condition, he has not been able to get down to provide her with the usual TLC.

The Tempest is one of the later generation Westerly's designed by Ed Dubois, with a modern hull design with two double aft cabins. These yachts were also reported to have a higher-quality interior finish than most of the earlier Westerly's. As with two aft double cabins, there was no need for a fore-cabin, the forward part was split into an excellent full-width heads, and a large sail/gear locker with access from both heads and deck. This was called the "Original Option" for the Tempest design.

This is also the bilge keel model of the Tempest which is highly sought-after as the production run of this Westerly was reported as lower than the fin keel model. The bilge keel option had twin, well-angled and efficient keels with bulbs at the base to keep the centre of gravity low, as well as slightly more keel weight than the fin keel versions.

Her spacious cockpit offers ample room for a family but is equally suitable for single-handed sailing for which she has been thoughtfully set up with all control lines led aft. She has a good selection of navigation and sailing instruments onboard as well as an auto tiller.

She is extremely well equipped throughout and below deck her internal furniture, upholstery and headlining appear to be in good condition but the headlinings are sagging a little in certain parts of the saloon area and need some attention. But the owner informs me that both rear cabin headlinings were renewed in 2023, and also renewed in the heads in 2017.

We think this is a cracking mid-sized cruiser and whether you are looking for a safe, sturdy family cruiser or a yacht suitable for shorthanded cruising, this Westerly Tempest has to be worthy of consideration, furthermore she has all her original documentation including VAT receipt and builders certificate, unusual for a boat of this age.

The following is a direct quote from the owner as he wanted to ensure this important information was detailed;

"This boat has been wintered ashore every year with oil and filter changed. The fuel filter has been changed every 2 years. A new shaft seal was fitted in 2016. These seals are good for 1500 hours and engine hours are about 500 since then. The seal must be "burped" on first returning to the water! The hull was epoxied in 2003 as an osmosis preventative. The 4 winches were stripped down, cleaned and greased in 2020. The blue paintwork and decal were also redone at the same time. The boat has been used mostly for day sails, but also occasional trips along the south coast and has never been taken out in anything above force 5. She is a comfortable, safe and easy boat to sail."

Westerly Yachts are prominent for their strong and well-built construction and were one of Europe's leading production builder of fiberglass composite sailboats . They have manufactured yachts from the mid-1960’s through the 1970’s and 1980’s before it terminated its trading.

Commander Denys Rayner, a popular yacht designer, in the year 1963 designed ‘The Westerly’ - a 22 ft yacht as requested by Hilary Scott who wished to set up a new company.

The company became Westerly Group Limited in the year 1993 and the yachts were presented as three ranges of Westerly, “the Oceans, the Regattas, and the Victorias”. And in the year 1995, Westerly Group was acquired by Tony Davies Bowman Group, the parent company of Rival Bowman and Starlight Yachts . In 1998, Bowman hit financial problems and as a result, the Westerly Group Limited was sold to Marigot Group. In the year 2000, the plant and machinery were sold to US Hunter, who had just started up in the UK as Legend.

Westerly made 300 of the Discus (more than the Westerly 33 ketch that it superseded) and many of these boats can be found in the Med or cruising further afield. The Discus holds the record for the fibre glass yacht sailed furthest above the Arctic Circle (Bob Shepton on Dodo's Delight), another testament to the strength of the hull and its sea-keeping qualities. Built in two distinct versions between 1980 and 1984, with different deck mouldings, the Westerly Discus is a solid and very seaworthy cruiser. Accommodation

The accommodation is very well planned, spacious and airey. The sapele hardwood has very good longevity qualities and is one of the best for resisting moisture damage. It has a warm colour creating a lovely ambience. The saloon table when open spans over to each saloon berth and allows for entertaining friends and family. Port and starboard saloon seats convert to 6’2” berths and have their original lee boards. So this vessel has been looked after very well over the years. The video will show more detail regardless layout. All cushions seemed very comfortable too.

This Laurent Giles design, iconic 1980 Westerly 36 Conway twin keel Galway version is a lovely example of this popular, safe, long distance cruiser with centre cockpit. The Westerly Conway was one of the best sea boats designed by Westerly Yachts; robustly constructed and well proven long-distance cruiser ideal for Blue Water sailing and/or as a liveaboard.

Presented in very good condition, she has a recently replaced engine that has been hardly used so it's like new. The sails were also replaced a few years ago but never really used apart from the odd daysail.

The linings (including a insulated headliner) are less than 3 years old and all the furniture covers were replaced at the same time. All the woodwork is original and every floor hatch and cupboard door works perfectly. The fixed rigging was cleaned and waxed yearly. The main fulling is electric and working.
