Reviewed: Azimut Magellano 25 Metri
- By Phil Draper
- Updated: March 11, 2021
When Azimut Yachts wanted to enhance its Magellano series with larger models, the Italian builder returned to UK-based designer Ken Freivokh, who was responsible for the first Magellano 74 model 10 years ago. The result is the Magellano 25 Metri, a raised pilothouse design.
Freivokh says a length overall of around 80 to 90 feet is a real sweet spot for yacht designers like him because the scale is sufficient to create proper proportions. The 25 Metri’s profile is elegant and timeless, and there’s something of the 1930s streamline moderne movement about it. The similarity could be the boldness of line, the glazing shapes, or perhaps something as simple as the horizontal stainless-steel banding that rounds off the rim of the wraparound swim platform. Maybe it’s the wooden battens on the after corners of the superstructure.
There’s a modern take on color with the exterior that Azimut displayed on Hull No. 1. Straying beyond whites, dark blues and gray metallics for hull paint is often contentious, but the hull here is a soothing blue-green metallic—what the Italians call ottanio and the English call teal. I like it.
The outdoor spaces are everything they should be. Side decks connect the foredeck terrace with a conventional cockpit aft. In that cockpit are double longitudinal sofas, a transom blind, and a step between the stern garage door and a beach terrace. Up top, the split-level flybridge is protected by the opening hardtop above and has two helm seats to port, a bar with a pair of stools, booth dining and an aft area open to interpretation—in this case, sun loungers.
The yacht’s interior concept comes from Milan-based architect Vincenzo De Cotiis, who dressed Hull No. 1 with a distinctly 1950s flavor. It sounds kitschy, but it’s uber-cool. The majority of the decor bounces off various off-white textures: laminates, fabrics, lacquer. The result is light and bright. And the yacht’s unusual hull shade influences various marble and velour upholstery choices (or perhaps the influencing was the other way around). Horizontal surfaces, such as those running down each side beneath the picture windows, are a softer, yellower faux marble. Other detailing includes brown-leather sole tiles, mottled rugs, irregularly shaped ceiling panels, faux brasswork, and lots of glass and mirrors, often distressed. De Cotiis loves the appearance of wear and tear.
There is a sightline to port from the aft deck all the way through to the windshield and beyond, an important design element from Freivokh. The stand-alone sofas and the rotating marble-topped dining table in the main salon are mostly items from De Cotiis’ own collection.
The galley is forward with white cabinetry, and with charcoal-shade work surfaces and backsplashes. Most appliances are Miele, and there’s a Mabe refrigerator. The galley is a semiformal space, open to owners and guests, but capable of being closed off by a pair of mirrored doors set at a shallow angle so as not to directly reflect the yacht’s symmetry. A banquette is adjacent to the galley and is ideal for crew, who have their own door to the portside deck for access to quarters in the bow.
A reverse-spiral staircase with a day-head beneath it climbs up to the raised pilothouse and flybridge. The helm console is to starboard in the wheelhouse with touchscreen instrumentation from Raymarine. A mini couch here tracks back and forth electrically from an inaccessible spot behind the staircase to a snug spot virtually amidships, and in doing so, it closes off the stairway, setting up a great pilot berth right next to the wheel.
Driving this yacht is all it should be. The Magellano 25 Metri is offered with twin 1,400 hp or 1,550 hp MAN V-12 diesels, which deliver quoted top speeds up to 25 knots. I got on board Hull No. 1 at the beginning of this past October off Portofino, Italy. The boat had standard engines and was over half-load with eight people aboard. With those V-12s spinning 2,300 rpm, and the Humphree electric fin stabilizers and transom blades set to autotrim, I recorded a top hop of 23.6 knots on various headings and a total fuel burn averaging around 142 gallons per hour.
At a cruise-all-day 2,000 rpm and 19 knots or so, the engines burned 101.4 gallons per hour, which, allowing for a 10 percent reserve, means a range of around 350 nautical miles. With full tanks and engines purring at 1,000 rpm, there’s a potential 1,500 nautical miles to be enjoyed at 9.5 knots.
We had a calm sea state and a breeze measuring slight to zero—not the harshest of conditions to see what the yacht’s dual-mode hull could do. The hull design comes from naval architect Pierluigi Ausonio and is named for a double-chine geometry that works well at displacement and semidisplacement speeds. The prop shafts spin in half tunnels on each side of a skeg keel.
I can report that the hull is light on the helm and turns precisely. The build quality also inspires confidence. While the specs suggest that the yacht is all vinylester, glass fiber and foam, in reality, the flybridge, hardtop and garage door moldings are carbon fiber, a material that helps a lot in stability versus utility trade-offs.
The lower deck, accessed from a starboard-side staircase abaft the galley, accommodates eight guests in four staterooms. The master is just abaft amidships and has hullside windows, a sofa to starboard and twin sinks to port, with a separate head-and-shower compartment. The VIP, which is forward of amidships, has a transverse berth to port, as well as an en suite head and walk-in closet to starboard. Between the master and VIP, the guest stateroom to port has a transverse double berth, and the stateroom to starboard has twin berths that convert to a double. All the staterooms come with Loro Piana bed linens, dark-grain Venetian blinds and Bose entertainment systems.
Hull numbers 2 and 3 of the Magellano 25 Metri are US-bound and will have the bigger MANs as well as upgraded 21 kW generators. At the time of this writing, five hulls had been sold. While the Magellano 25 Metri has a distinct style, it appears that it also has global appeal.

Azimut Grande 25 METRI
- 2018 - 2024
- 8 Passengers
Description
Azimut 25 METRI was presented at the international exhibition in Cannes in 2018 and is positioned as a compact continuation of the Grande lineup. It was designed by renowned designers Stefano Rigini and Akilo Salvani, who this time focused on natural light. The yacht received panoramic glazing throughout the cabin and large asymmetric portholes in the cabins, which are decorated in the Italian style. Thanks to a new concept called “semi-custom,” the customer can personally choose any interior material.
This 26-meter yacht is distinguished from its predecessors by better privacy and a more thoughtful layout of cabins. The manufacturer took care of privacy by separating the crew cabins and guests, and the owner's cabin received a special comfortable space. To relax with the company there is a spacious flybridge with a bar, sofas and a control post. In the bow of the vessel there are wide sunbeds, sofas and a small table, and the shaded terrace in the aft of the yacht allows you to go to the folding transom with a hydraulic drive. On the main deck there is a large U-shaped sofa, a dining table for 8 people, the owner’s kitchen and cabin with a separate shower, sofa and wardrobe with a safety deposit box built into it.
To give the boat greater controllability, the hull and superstructure developed by P.L.A.N.A.Design were created using carbon fiber and lightweight fiberglass. It is worth noting the special steering system “Electronic Power Steering”, which allows you to adjust the steering sensitivity and set a clearer course.
The Azimut 25 METRI has been classified by A.Sea Craft and can be used to access the open ocean.

Description
Azimut wanted to create a yacht that would convey the feeling of a penthouse overlooking the sea. The Magellano 25 Meter has a chic yet sophisticated look. Built with a dual-mode hull, she is perfect for both slow, economical cruising and faster speeds. Hitting a top speed around 25 knots and a cruising speed of 21 knots, she is perfect for enjoying time out on the water. The five-state layout has an owner's suite and four guest staterooms: including two Vips, a single and double stateroom.
One of her unique features is called "Hotel Mode," a system that allows the onboard services to function longer when the boat is at anchor without having to start the generators. Not only does her beautiful interior and exterior stand out but also her cutting edge technology abroad.
High Tech Equipment
Some of her innovative tech features include a fuel-efficient Dual-Mode Hull, a zero-emission mode when at anchor, and a NASA-Patent air sanitizing system called BCool Active Sanitizing.
Unique Interior Design
In the spacious saloon, Azimut wanted to offer a view of the sea from any perspective. Her unique interior design includes brushed Verde Alpi marble, dark walnut wood, carpet, polished brass, lacquered wood, and ribbed wood, creating tons of texture throughout the yacht.
Spacious Sundeck
The sundeck is perfect for warm weather cruising—this area provides two-tiers of lounging and sunbeds, making it excellent for entertaining. Guests can enjoy the sun or shade with the retractable sunroof.
Owner's Suite
The owner's suite is complete with a full walk-in wardrobe, ribbed wall paneling, and polished brass details.

Pearl Yachts delivers first 25m model with private owner's terrace
The first unit in Pearl Yachts ' 25.3-metre series, christened Pearly Spencer , has been delivered following her debut at this year's Cannes Yachting Festival . According to BOATPro , she is now anchored in Port de Portals Nous in Palma, Mallorca.
The Pearl 82 model sits between the shipyard's Pearl 95 and Pearl 72 offerings and features a raised pilothouse design with two aft deck configurations and a semi-walkaround deck with a forward master suite and private forepeak terrace.
The company claims this model is the only yacht in its class to offer this type of configuration, and Pearl Yachts managing director, Iain Smallridge, called the 82 "the most compact superyacht on the market".
The Pearl 82 builds on the collaboration between the shipyard and Bill Dixon whose studio, Dixon Yacht Design , created the exterior profile and naval architecture. Naturally, the model shares a sporty profile with the rest of the Pearl range with an exterior defined by four bands of dark glass.
Owners are offered the choice between two aft deck arrangements: the "Riviera" configuration with aft-facing sunpads behind the table and a sofa set up, and the "Veranda" layout with pivoting seating that can be used for dining or for observing activities at sea. Fold-down bulwarks at this level expand the aft cockpit, while a tender garage offers storage for a Williams 345 tender – or similar – and a Jet Ski.
All the outdoor areas can be protected by a foredeck Bimini, electric shades and the hard top on the flybridge, which can be set to full shade, adjustable louvres and full sun at the touch of a button. The owner's foredeck lounge is also connected to the flybridge deck and benefits from a full-sized dining table, a bar, a sunpad and a spa pool.
Kelly Hoppen, another long-time Pearl Yachts collaborator, is responsible for the interior which accommodates up to 10 guests with a forward master suite that has access to a private bow terrace through a glass door. The remaining guest accommodation is found on the lower deck, configured as two twins and two doubles.
"We've used beautiful materials, and the joinery and the detailing are absolutely intricate, but the feel of when you are on board is quite open plan, with these wonderfully enlarged windows, which make you feel that you are really out at sea, rather than being enclosed inside of a yacht," said Hoppen.
Other interior highlights include a main saloon with floor-to-ceiling windows which, together with cut-out bulwarks, allow an abundance of natural light to fill the space. Forward is dining for all 10 guests with galley access to port.
Engine room access, galley access and foredeck access are all positioned on the port side of the yacht, ensuring privacy for guests and crew.
"The design revealed in Düsseldorf set the stage for what will be a truly spectacular world premiere at Cannes next September," Smallridge said at the yacht's launch in July 2024 . "This yacht is a testament to our feature-focused philosophy and innovative spirit, and to our dedication to pushing the limits of yacht design and flawless quality."
The Pearl 82 offers owners a choice of three propulsion packages with twin MAN V12 engines ranging from 1,650hp to 2,000hp, with the most powerful engines delivering a top speed of 33 knots.

Canada denies son of ex-Putin ally permission to sail yacht through Northwest Passage
CBSA advised Andrey Yakunin sail 1,000 nautical miles off course to Goose Bay, N.L., to apply in person after his remote application was denied

When the son of one of Vladimir Putin’s former close allies sought to travel through the Northwest Passage to Alaska, the Canada Border Services Agency instead demanded he sail 1,000 nautical miles off course in an attempt to get permission for the voyage.
The 26-metre yacht Firebird is owned by Andrey Yakunin, the son of Vladimir Yakunin, who was a loyal Kremlin ally and president of the Russian Railways until his son applied for British citizenship a decade ago. The younger Yakunin, who now lives in Italy, attempted to make his journey at a time when tensions have risen between Canada and Russia over the invasion of Ukraine and tit-for-tat sanctions put in place by both countries.

“We wanted to do an attempt of crossing the Northwest Passage from Atlantic to the Pacific, and as far as we understood the existing rules and regs, we needed to apply for remote clearance, which we did, and we were not able to obtain one,” Andrey Yakunin said early Tuesday in an interview from his home in Italy.
The trip, which journeys through the waters of Canada’s Arctic, is a draw for high-latitude sailors.
“For anybody who is doing high lats, the Northwest Passage is one of the final attempts you can do,” Yakunin said.
“It’s the remoteness, the challenges, the necessity to navigate through the quickly changing ice conditions.”
On July 5, 2023, Firebird skipper Peter Madej made a remote clearance application to the Canadian government for the ship’s passage. The luxury sailboat was in Greenland at the time, waiting to make the voyage planned for Aug. 5 to Sept. 12 of that year. There were supposed to be phone interviews, which never occurred, and Firebird’s captain got an email from the CBSA on July 14, 2023, “advising that the vessel was not authorized for remote clearance and was not to proceed to Canada or Canadian waters,” according to court documents.

“It has been brought to our attention that the department of Immigration and Citizenship has cancelled the electronic travel authorization for an individual or individuals aboard,” the CBSA told Madej. The vessel was later told to sail to Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador, where there is a CBSA reporting site, after Madej lawyered up and sought a reconsideration of the decision.
Madej wrote back to the border agency July 23, 2023, “indicating the importance of the voyage for the crew, and the significant detour (adding approximately 2,000 nautical miles both ways) to the itinerary should the vessel not be cleared for remote clearance,” according to the Federal Court decision from Justice Russell Zinn.
Zinn’s decision says the captain argued the diversion to Goose Bay would bring “significant increased risk to their safety,” and that there would be lost time and increased fuel consumption.
The stretch of water they would have had to sail for the diversion is “very tricky,” Yakunin said. “If the conditions are nice, I can do 200 miles per day. But sometimes you just sit in a bay and wait for a weather window for weeks.”
In response, Firebird Ocean Ltd. took Canada’s Department of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, which oversees the border agency, to federal court, looking for a judicial review of the decision.
“I am, more than anybody else, interested in understanding what has (gone) wrong with our reputation to make sure that we do not repeat the same mistake twice,” Yakunin said.
On Sept. 12, 2024 the judge sent the matter back to the border agency for a second look from a different decision maker.
“The facts underlying this (private vessel remote clearance) application process reveal communication and disclosure deficiencies” by the border agency which have left those at the helm of Firebird “inadequately informed and without meaningful participation,” wrote Zinn.
Yakunin wouldn’t wade into whether he thinks his father’s position in Russia was the hurdle that prevented the voyage in 2023. “I think it would be improper for me to offer any comment on my father’s side,” he said. “It would be very difficult for me to draw any conclusions with the current information that we have.”
The younger Yakunin — a dual Russian-British citizen — was acquitted earlier this year by a Norwegian court on charges that he flew a drone from the yacht in the fall of 2022 while it was in Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean. Authorities clamped down on Russian citizens using drones in Norway after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Yakunin argued successfully that the drone was used to capture images of himself and his crew skiing and fishing. He even joked during the trial that while he isn’t a spy, he does own a full collection of James Bond movies.
“That one is very happily I can say behind us,” Yakunin said Tuesday. “The court there has supported what I’ve been saying from day one — that there is no offence.”
Yakunin has distanced himself from Russia’s invasion. When asked if he feels like different countries are keeping tabs on him due to his connections with Russia, he said, “We’re just living through very challenging times, and quite sad times.”
If he can get permission from Canadian authorities, Yakunin hopes to try for the ultimate Canadian adventure again aboard Firebird.
“Logistically, I think it will be a three-or-four year run-up before we are properly positioned and prepared for another attempt at the Northwest Passage,” he said. “It will definitely be more than two years. And I do hope to make it in less than four.”
If it happens, he’s hoping to see lots of Arctic wildlife during the adventure. He’s heard about “the abundance of beluga whales,” and notes “the chances of sighting a narwhal could make anybody’s day, including mine.”
He’ll be careful to avoid polar bears. “I think I have a low compatibility with them, so I (will) try to give them right of passage and steer well clear.”
