Superyacht Training: UKSA Discuss The Rise In Female Yacht Crew

Is gender imbalance in the yachting industry improving.

UKSA is a national maritime charity, based on the Isle of Wight, with a vision to widen access to maritime training and enhance life skills and employment in the sector. We’ve been fortunate enough to speak with them and find out which Superyacht training courses they offer, and why they think they’ve seen a rise in female yacht crew applicants.

superyacht training

Q&A with James Potipher, UKSA Superyacht Cadetship Manager:

What superyacht training courses do you offer for yachties.

We offer three main courses for our Superyacht students:

1. Superyacht Cadetship program –  A four-year structured course, designed to help students obtain   employment   in  the industry . And, rise up the ranks to OOW and beyond. The first phase is an intensive five-month course that equips students with their Yachtmaster and engineering qualifications. Students will gain all the qualifications needed to become a junior Deckhand.

2. Superyacht Crew Training – An intensive three-week course. This   program   will   prepare  students  for   their first  deckhand  job on  a superyacht  by   providing   skills and qualifications . Students will come out of this course with deck work skills, powerboat licenses, and basic safety training.

3. UKSA’s intensive three-week Superyacht Interior Training course – For students looking to begin their career as a steward/stewardess. It provides all the skills and qualifications required to secure that first job onboard a superyacht. Students will come out of this course with interior skills, powerboat licenses, and basic safety training.

During each course, time is spent creating CVs, applying for jobs, and outlining what to expect. All training phases are inclusive of food and accommodation, with funding opportunities available.

What changes have you seen to course intakes since the beginning of the pandemic?

Course intakes have been steady during the pandemic. We have adapted our training to meet the rules and regulations in place. And, as an educational provider, we were able to run most of the courses as normal. A lot of our latest intakes are those who have thought about their career during the lockdowns.  And subsequently, decided on a different route.

You’ve recently seen a 150 percent increase in female applicants for your S uperyacht training cadet course. What do you think caused this?

I think the industry is changing. The number of female applicants enrolling on the Superyacht Crew Training and the Cadetship is mirrored by the way the industry is changing with time. There are a lot more opportunities available for female deckhands, providing a good entry point into the industry.

Do you think the yachting industry will be close to becoming more of a 50:50 split, rather than primarily dominated by males? Or do you think that there is still a long way to go?

Getting   to  a 50:50 split  will take some time . However, looking at the number of female applicants we’ve received, we are moving in the right direction. Will it ever be an even split? I don’t know, but I truly believe we can make the split more even in the future.

UKSA -James Potipher

How successful have female yachtie students who have finished the cadetship course been in finding their first position? Has it been difficult? and what would you say their success rate is when compared with females completing the Superyacht interior course?

There isn’t a big difference between the percentage of male to female students getting their first job after the cadetship. One of the biggest barriers to getting the first job is the rooming onboard a vessel. Generally, male students will stay in a room together. So, this can be the difficulty females experience when finding their first role. Although many boats are specifically looking for female deckhands, there are plenty of opportunities in the industry.

There’s no doubt in my mind that you’ve heard of Captain Sandy from the popular reality TV series Below Deck . Captain Sandy is a great example of a woman in a traditionally male-dominated field who has achieved incredible success. Do you think this may have had anything to do with the dramatic increase in female applicants in the Superyacht training courses?

Unfortunately, I have never watched Below Deck. But having the presence of a female captain is a positive thing. It will hopefully encourage and help more women get into the industry. Other prominent figures also show the balance is shifting. Such as Kate McCue, one of the first female captains of a mega cruise ship. And, the first all-female crew of an A380. Albeit, slowly to start with hopefully, the shift will change for the positive.

Captain Sandy - Below deck

Do you believe, that the reality TV series, Below Deck has influenced superyacht training course applications?

I personally think Below Deck has had little influence regarding our course applications. From what I hear and from my experience in the industry, what happens in the show might differ from reality. If a documentary was made showcasing my time onboard it may not match up to what occurs Below Deck. It would have been many hours scrubbing teak decks, cleaning windows, and polishing stainless steel. Which, may not be the greatest viewing. But the exposure to the Superyacht industry is always good. And, if this helps more people get into the industry, the better.

If you are a female considering starting your Superyacht training, now is your time to shine!

Female applicants are welcome on all superyacht training courses. For more information on the courses available at UKSA click here .

Yachtmaster Power Theory, Practical and Exam

£2,200  GBP

Our RYA Yachtmaster Power Theory and practical is an all-inclusive course if you want to combine both the RYA Yachtmaster Theory and practical certificates of competence. Popular with Superyacht crew and those looking to work as a commercial skipper.

This course is ideal for Superyacht crew who are looking to take the next stage towards lead Deckhand, Bosun.

What is a Yachtmaster certificate of competence?

The RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Power certificate of competence allows the holder to skipper of a Motor Yacht, up to 24 meters in length, 150 miles from a safe haven. Add STCW Basic Safety Training and you have a qualification to skipper Motor boats up to 200GT, which may be more than 24 meters in length.

There are two routes through to the RYA Yachtmaster Certificate of Competence.

RYA Yachtmaster Offshore

Yachtmaster Offshore is the most popular route. Superyacht crew who are looking to progress to lead deckhand or Bosun are usually required to hold Yachtmaster Offshore. The RYA Yachtmaster Offshore is a prerequisite for the Efficient Deckhand course and a requirement for Officer of the Watch.

The sea time requirements for the Yachtmaster offshore can be found in the prerequisites section below.

RYA Yachtmaster Coastal

Not all candidates have the sea time or command experience for the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate. Candidates with 800 miles logged choose the Yachtmaster Coastal certificate. Furthermore, some skippers have no intention of going offshore and want to stick to coastal waters.

If you own your own Motorboat and are looking for a qualification that provides confidence then we recommend the Yachtmaster Coastal route

Where to stay

If you choose our self-catering accommodation option, then our crew houses in Cowes are comfortable and centrally located. Just a 2-minute walk to the town and our training centre, this will take the stress out of finding your own accommodation.

Accomodation is £640

  • All training, fuel, and berthing fees included
  • 100 miles logged
  • £224 Yachtmaster Offshore/Coastal exam fee is not included.

What drew me to the Cadetship was the hands-on experience you get to build up on the water, and the sea miles you gain over the duration of the course. It allows you to be thrown into situations that you wouldn’t usually be in. Tory Armstrong -Superyacht Cadetship/Master Yacht

Time to vote for your favorite submission from the Clipper Yacht Racing Image Awards

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission.

The Yacht Racing Image Awards returns again this year, celebrating the artistry and skill behind the best images in racing photography.

This year, photographers from the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race and Clipper Events have submitted an incredible array of images from these exhilarating and risky races.

Each shot offers a sneak peek into the world of offshore sailing and big boat racing, highlighting the extreme conditions experienced by the crew, and you can vote for your favorite .

“One of the biggest challenges of the natural world,” the Clipper Race is a record-breaking 40,000 nautical mile (46,000 mile) race around the world on a 70-foot ocean racing yacht. The route is divided into 8 legs and between 13 and 16 individual races, including 6 ocean crossings, giving plenty of opportunities for incredible shots.

Participants need no previous sailing experience, and can choose to participate in the full race or certain legs.

It was the brainchild of Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first person to sail solo nonstop around the world, and the first race took place in 1996.

Each leg is priced individually, and to do the entire race costs approximately £51,500 ($61,600 / AU$100,500), plus the compulsory training which is £6,700 ($8,500 / AU$13,000).

The image above was taken by Meredith Rodgers, an on-board reporter on the Clipper 2023-2024 race. The photograph was taken on Leg 5, Stage 6 of the race from Airlie Beach, Australia to Ha Long Bay in Vietnam, in the middle of the South China Sea.

Rodgers said:

“I love that this photo features a woman in sailing as the main focus. Also, the perfect timing of the head torch shining behind her makes it a very special image for me.”

Second up we have Tiger Brusius, also an on-board reporter during the 2023-2024 Clipper Race. His photograph was taken during Leg 1, Stage 2, from Puerto Sherry, Spain to Punta del Este, Uruguay.

“What I like about this picture is how well it captures both the endurance of the offshore sailor and the raw, relentless power of nature. This photo was taken on the 26th day of racing from Spain to Uruguay. It was a significant race for our team as we were sailing into our home port of Yacht Club Punta del Este, and as you can imagine, the stakes were high!

"The team had been pushing very hard throughout the entire leg, and by the time we were nearing Uruguay, fatigue was starting to settle in. As we approached, the weather shifted dramatically – the temperature dropped, and we encountered a powerful weather system known as a Pampero. The winds howled, and the seas became rough. In the shallow waters off Uruguay, we found ourselves tacking for what felt like an eternity, with angles close to 170-180 degrees for a while.

"The boat and crew were slammed by short, steep waves, and every moment felt like a test of endurance. Despite the punishing conditions, the team’s persistence paid off. We crossed the finish line five hours ahead of second place, and that night, Uruguayan sailing history was made. Our Punta del Este-born Skipper, Nano Antia, won into his hometown, breaking a ten-year-long home-boat curse with our win. It was a victory earned through resilience and determination – a vivid reminder of the challenges sailors face and the resilience required to overcome them.”

And last but not least we have Paul Wyeth with, his image of the Knox-Johnston Cup in 2024 at The Needles, Isle of Wight, UK.

“This was taken during some very testing conditions on Clipper Events’ flagship race, the Knox-Johnston Cup. This event saw a fleet of Clipper 68s and Clipper 70s race around the Isle of Wight, an iconic racecourse, in some challenging conditions. I was shooting from my rib in 35+ knots of wind and a rough sea state, capturing CV3 Adventurous through The Needles, perfectly conveying the conditions of the day.

"Shooting on the water involves working from different types of boats, as well as using helicopters and drones. My work has expanded to corporate, property, and sports photography, but shooting on the water will probably always be at the heart of what I do. If you can shoot in the harsh marine environment, you can pretty much shoot anywhere!”
