New Zealand
Possessing an intense beauty mirrored in tranquil mountains and raging rivers, New Zealand is one of the most breathtakingly scenic yachting destinations in the southern hemisphere. Mesmerizing glaciers, bubbling mud pools and soft golden beaches are all there to be discovered alongside one of the world’s premier wine and food scenes.
The cruising grounds of New Zealand are split into the North and South Islands; varying in landscape and atmosphere but united in a pure sense of natural wonderment. The south is the most scenic and mountainous of the two, with a breathtaking range of jagged Alps running the length of the island. The north is somewhat of a quieter and more relaxed holiday destination with a strong yachting history.
Auckland The picturesque city of Auckland is famous for its exceptional international sailing connections, hosting a collection of first class regattas and superb marinas. The ‘City of Sails’ is the enchanting base for sailing the Hauraki Gulf and the Coromandel Peninsula, two equally captivating cruising grounds in their own right.
Hauraki Gulf and The Coromandel The Hauraki Gulf is an island-sprinkled, smooth-water paradise boasting gorgeous landscapes swathed in scarlet flowers, glowing beaches, sprawling vineyards and seaside villages that are a delight to explore. The Coromandel is dotted with sublime beaches and hidden bays that make for perfect anchorage points.
The Bay of Islands Further north, The Bay of Islands is traditionally New Zealand’s yachting centre, boasting an extraordinary protected bay and hundreds of secluded islands offering the perfect secluded escape. Characterised by unbelievably green hills rolling down onto silky soft sands, the cool waters are simply bursting with incredible marine life, where marlin, dolphins and seals can be seen right from the deck.
Marlborough Sounds For a more peaceful and secluded twist, head to one of New Zealand’s most internationally renowned areas in Marlborough Sounds. An absolute yachting heaven, the exquisite waters of Marlborough are equally matched by their onshore delights, boasting sheltered bays, glistening beaches, hidden caves and exhilarating bushwalks. World-renowned for its exquisite wines, the region is the perfect place to sample some of the world’s best Sauvignon Blanc.
Fiordland Words can not do justice to the natural wonder that awaits in the Fiordland on New Zealand’s remote south-west coast. Nothing short of spectacular, ethereal landscapes rise up majestically from the strikingly calm waters; a flowing combination of snow-capped mountains, rolling hills, tumbling waterfalls and fascinating wildlife.
Queenstown Onshore, there are endless outdoor pursuits on offer, from cycling and canoeing to walking and four-wheel driving. Inland on the South Island is the famous adventure capital of Queenstown, offering a dizzying range of unique and off-beat activities to satisfy even the most hardened thrill-seeker.

30 Crewed Luxury Yachts for Charter in New Zealand
New Zealand Yacht Charters
Charter vacations in the South Pacific cruising grounds of New Zealand benefit from an abundance of activities and itinerary choices offered by the combination of the North and South Islands. With the Tasman Sea to the west and the Pacific Ocean to the east, the sailing conditions are excellent and each year play host to the prestigious superyacht regatta, the New Zealand Millennium Cup.
New Zealand Luxury Yacht Charter Guide
Both the North Island and South Island of New Zealand feature coastlines peppered with a canvas of bays, harbours, fjords and stunning beaches. Renting a private crewed motor yacht, sailing boat or expedition yacht here is a fantastic way to explore the breath taking scenery any time of year, from the glaciers and snow-capped mountains in winter to the winding vineyards and semi-tropical beaches in the summer.
New Zealand is the perfect destination for active charterers looking to partake in adrenaline fuelled activities on water and land as well as try out all of the toys carried on board your charter yacht. Known as the ‘white knuckle capital of the world’, there are endless opportunities to create an experience of a lifetime as well as enjoy cruising conditions and sheltered anchorages that have attracted sailing enthusiasts for hundreds of years.
Luxury Yacht Charter Itineraries in New Zealand
New Zealand’s South Island is the less populated, more rugged of the two and is ideal for more relaxed exploration of the spectacular Marlborough Wine Country and a varied landscape. In contrast, the North Island is home to some of the world’s most vibrant modern cities such as Auckland which offers a great selection of shops, bars, restaurants and busy harbours. Auckland is also the gateway to 144 islands and bays of the Bay of Islands which can create a comprehensive and varied itinerary all of their own.

Exterior design
Rua Moana is a study in pure elegance.
The fluid lines of its catamaran hull design and computerised ride control systems maximise comfort and fuel efficiency, and at the same time minimise wake disturbance to the delicate coastal ecosystems of our cruising waters. There are generously proportioned outdoor areas, which include a submersible beach platform at the stern, and a large spa pool on the foredeck. While the flying bridge provides a lofty platform from which to take in the spectacular natural panorama of our cruising waters.
Interior design
Even the most minute aspect of Rua Moana’s interior has benefitted from fastidious attention to detail and devotion to effortless luxury. Décor is streamlined and clutter-free, producing a feeling of light and space. Hard surfaces are smooth and sleek, and soft furnishings are lush and inviting. There is room to be social and space for privacy, without compromising either one. There are four guest cabins, each with a Queen size bed and its own ensuite bathroom. Deep 100% wool New Zealand carpets soften footsteps and minimise sound to enhance the profound sense of peace and wellbeing that embraces you as soon as you step aboard Rua Moana. A chefs galley, indoor and outdoor dining areas, main saloon, media room, and wine lounge complete the main floor with a state-of-the-art flying bridge and large outside deck located upstairs.
Environmentally conscious, energy-efficient thinking is evident throughout. You can discover more about this aspect of Rua Moana’s design and construction here

A Message from Ben Osborne
“Exploring the endless coastline of New Zealand by luxury yacht is by far the best way to travel in New Zealand. There are numerous possible itineraries guests can take from the warmer sub-tropical climate of the northern islands to the striking glaciers and mountainous beauty of the south.
Trips inland are also made possible with excellent land and helicopter transfer services to visit key points of interest not accessible by boat.”
Ben Osborne General Manager
Destinations
Sandy beaches offer a golden trim to the shores of glistening, pristine seas. Snowy mountains melt in to oceans filled with gargantuan blue travellers from Antarctica. Smiling faces and happy hands wave “g-day” and offer a warm welcome, “haere mai”. Forests of twisted wood and moss-covered stone lead you to grassy knolls and views of soft blue infinity.
It’s Glaciers edge ever further on their journey as they wale to the earth and the sky. Waves curl to the surfers’ delight, left and right as the ocean smiles.

Testimonials
"... from the first communication regarding, entry to New Zealand, reserving berths, arranging local suppliers, contractors and international servicing agents, the task at hand was made much easier with your expertise and guidance. It certainly made my life and that of crew a much easier and enjoyable place to be.
Nothing was ever a problem and no job was to small or to large. I certainly appreciated the attention to detail and no stone left unturned."

M/Y Endless Summer
"Our owners trip was filled with many challenges, all of which you and your staff handled so very calmly and completely. From multiple arrivals and subsequently departures of our group, to shore side transfers, helicopter trips and weather adversities and even un-expected commercial back up flights, you and your team scrambled in an instant to come through for my owner and his group without drama.
I was very impressed with this Allan and a big thank you for the efforts behind the scenes that no doubt went in to these arrangements. You certainly have your thumb on the pulse down there. ."
Captain Anthony J Hodgson, M/Y Endless Summer
"All of the arrangements were always on time and confirmed in ample time to ensure that the trip was able to proceed smoothly and efficiently, and this was much appreciated by the owners and myself.
All of your ancillary services and suppliers with whom we had dealings all proved to be of high standards also, and in general the whole operation showed to good effect that it is genuinely aware of and interested in maintaining the level of service that cruising yachts require and demand."

Spotlight on New Zealand
The arrival of the America’s Cup in 2021 brought renewed attention to New Zealand as a far-flung and multi-dimensional yachting destination.
“New Zealand is the best kept secret in the world, believe me”, says Sir Michael Hill, owner of superyacht VvS1 . “Of course, there are snippets of great places everywhere in the world, but there really is no place like New Zealand.” It’s a sentiment shared by many superyacht owners and charter guests who have gone the extra mile to reach this far-flung destination.
As the oldest trophy in international sport, the America’s Cup , lands in Auckland early next year, many yachts are considering heading over there for the first time, either to grab a spectator’s spot on the water or to compete in the Mastercard Superyacht Regatta, taking place at the end of February. In the meantime, many yacht owners, like Delisa Mayer, are coming to New Zealand purely to explore a remote country with enormous appeal.
“We almost didn’t come to New Zealand because we made the mistake of looking at it as one country instead of multiple destinations,” said Mayer, joint owner of The Big Blue , which undertook an extended tour around the country in 2014. “You get everything here; the variety of the country is incredible and diverse.”
Millennium Cup Image: JEFF BROWN | BREED MEDIA
This month, the world’s most southerly regatta, the Millennium Cup (29 January to 1 February) is taking place once again in the Bay of Islands, offering up yet another excuse for superyachts to get off the beaten path and head south. “We have raced the Millennium Cup multiple times and won it twice,” says the owner or Silvertip , which is taking part again this year. “Racing in the Bay of Islands surrounded by a dolphin pod playing at the bow is always a treat. Any superyacht cruising in the Pacific should make a point of doing the Millennium Cup.”
It’s a sentiment shared by Robert Gleed of superyacht photographers Breed Media . “Of all the places in the world we have filmed and photographed superyachts, the Bay of Islands stands out above them all,” he says. “It’s a magical place, far away from the crowds, allowing visitors to enjoy a unique environment in the seclusion of quiet bays with isolated beaches all topped off with some of the best sailing waters in the world. The Cup itself is a relaxed, yet exciting event that is truly Kiwi in its vibe. Anyone who is privileged enough to be part of it will remember it forever and want to return time and time again.”
Marlborough Sounds
Events like the Millennium Cup and the America’s Cup might draw the crowds, but New Zealand is really an exceptional yachting destination in its own right. With 15,000 kilometres of coastline and the two major land masses to explore (North and South Island, divided by just 12 nautical miles), yachting visitors really are spoilt for choice.
Peter Busfield, executive director at NZ Marine , believes that the country’s sense of freedom is a real draw. “One of the first things visiting yachts will experience is freedom,” he says. “Freedom to catch saltwater fish without the need for a licence, freedom to anchor and walk along any beach and the freedom to enjoy many activities without crowds and queues. And the locals are so appreciative of visitors that they will offer more assistance and advice than you can handle!”
Whilst Auckland and the Bay of Islands might divert more attention to North Island, thanks to their regattas and yachting events, the South Island is just as impressive and visitors should ignore it at their peril. With wine to sample in Marlborough Sounds, glaciers to climb (not to mention spectacular parachuting, mountain biking and fishing) in Queenstown and mesmerising fjords to sail through, it’s a rich, adventure-seekers paradise with breathtaking landscapes and incredible wildlife. “One of our best day trips away from the boat, hands down, was the Marlborough Sounds,” said Delisa Mayer. “Everything you want is right there in that little jewel of New Zealand.”
Whichever island visitors choose – or even if they attempt both (experts recommend at least three months to circumnavigate the country), there is culture, marine life and epic landscape to impress. From Northland at the tip, with its white-sand beaches and rich Maori heritage, to Southland, with its towering peaks and rainforest in the far south – it’s little wonder that many visitors are making plans to return the minute they leave. “You’ll see us back,” says Delisa Mayer. “You’ll see us back sooner than you know.”

What are the most popular yacht holidays in New Zealand?
New Zealand is blessed with so much natural beauty and a beautiful coastline that spending time outdoors is but a natural habit for locals. One of the country's favorite pastimes is sailing, with hundreds of islands to explore, and coastline towns and cities that offer undeniable beauty and adventure. New Zealand's top yacht charter destinations are divided into two: the North and the South Island.
Let's begin with the North Island's top spots: the Bay of Islands and the capital city of Auckland. The Bay of Islands is recognized to be the top yacht charter destination in the country. With over 140 islands to explore, this North Island spot is teeming with adventure and relaxation at the same time. A maritime playground, the waters are rich in marine life, with dolphins swimming beside boats as they cruise through the waters being a common sight. There are also glorious beaches around the islands, rich history, and plenty of diving opportunities, snorkeling, or simply relaxing on the boat as you cruise from one island to the next.
Auckland, the capital city of New Zealand, is also known as the "City of Sails." This world-class sailing destination is the location for many competitive sailing races, including the famous America's Cup. The city is also known as the jumping-off point to the famed Hauraki Gulf, which features over 500 sheltered anchorages, beaches, fishing spots, and islands with plenty to offer the most discerning traveler. Auckland is also the jumping-off point to Waiheke's island, famous for its wineries and art scene, as well as the Motuihe Channel, known for its excellent fishing grounds.
The South Island of New Zealand offers more rugged landscapes, more exciting adventures, and more activities. Abel Tasman, located at the very tip of South Island, offers crystal clear waters and golden sand beaches. It is also a National Park, which means its coastal paradise is virtually untouched, with fascinating geography and beautiful scenery. The Tonga Island Marine Reserve is also found here, a protected underwater environment perfect for snorkeling and diving.
And lastly, Marlborough Sounds is yet another one of New Zealand's most famous yacht charter destinations. One of the most incredible locations in the South Island, you can find sheltered bays and views of forested mountains from the water. With golden beaches, untouched natural scenery, and plenty of islands to explore, the Marlborough Sounds is a definite South Island visit.
Where to go on a luxury yacht charter in New Zealand?
Auckland is the top spot for luxury yacht charters in New Zealand, simply because the city is the capital and offers high-end shopping, a bustling nightlife, and marinas that provide world-class berths and amenities. The Silo Marina and the Westhaven Marina, located in Auckland, are two of the top marinas in New Zealand, offering hundreds of berths and luxury amenities.
The Bay of Islands is another top luxury yacht charter destination for being the country's yachting center. With marinas that offer excellent amenities and facilities and hundreds of safe anchorages, this destination truly creates one of the best luxury yacht holidays in the Southern Hemisphere.
And the last on our list is Whangarei Harbour, home to countless marinas and only 2 hours away from Auckland. The marinas are near the city's CBD, restaurants, resorts, and the Harbor itself offers excellent diving, game fishing, and famous cruising grounds. The area is also home to lakes, rivers, and swimming with dolphins are but a regular thing.
New Zealand is a beautiful South Pacific Island with so much to offer in yacht charter excursions. With islands to the north and the south, take your pick from a relaxing yacht charter adventure or an adventure-packed expedition with scuba diving, kite surfing, cliff jumping, and even bungee jumping added to your yacht charter itinerary.

Origins of the AC75 Concept
The AC75 class was introduced by the America’s Cup organisers as part of the 36th America’s Cup, held in Auckland, New Zealand, in 2021. This new class was designed to push the boundaries of sailing technology and performance, reflecting the tradition of innovation that has characterised the America’s Cup since its inception in 1851.
The primary goal behind the AC75 design was to create a yacht that combined the agility and speed of multihulls with the aesthetic and handling characteristics of monohulls. This challenge necessitated a complete rethinking of conventional yacht design, leading to the development of a unique and groundbreaking class.
The Role of Hydrofoils
One of the most revolutionary aspects of the AC75 is its use of hydrofoils . These are wing-like structures mounted beneath the hulls of the yacht, which lift the boat out of the water as it gains speed. The result is a significant reduction in drag and a dramatic increase in speed.
Hydrofoils are not a new invention; their origins can be traced back to the early 20th century. Pioneers like Enrico Forlanini and Alexander Graham Bell experimented with hydrofoils in the early 1900s. However, the application of hydrofoils to high-speed racing yachts required a new level of engineering and precision.
For the AC75, the design and integration of hydrofoils presented a complex engineering challenge. The foils needed to be not only strong and lightweight but also capable of being adjusted in real time to adapt to changing conditions. This led to the development of advanced control systems that allow the crew to fine-tune the foils’ angle and position during races.
Wing Sails: A New Approach to Sail Design
Another significant innovation in the AC75 is the use of wing sails . Unlike traditional sails, which rely on their curvature and angle to generate lift, wing sails function more like aircraft wings. They have a fixed shape and are designed to optimise aerodynamic performance, providing more consistent and efficient propulsion.
The wing sail of the AC75 is a feat of engineering. Its design is inspired by aeronautics and is constructed from advanced composite materials to withstand the extreme forces encountered during high-speed sailing. The sail is adjustable and can be fine-tuned to maximise performance in different wind conditions, offering a level of control and efficiency that traditional sails cannot match.
Design and Technological Innovations
The AC75 is not just about hydrofoils and wing sails; it represents a comprehensive redesign of the racing yacht concept. Every aspect of the AC75 has been optimised for performance, from its hull shape to its onboard systems.
- Hull Design: The hull of the AC75 is designed to complement the hydrofoils and wing sails. It features a sleek, narrow profile that reduces drag and enhances stability. The hull is constructed from lightweight, high-strength materials, including advanced composites and carbon fibre, to ensure both durability and performance.
- Control Systems: The AC75 is equipped with sophisticated control systems that manage the various components of the yacht. These systems include hydraulic actuators for adjusting the foils and sails, as well as electronic controls for monitoring and optimising performance. The integration of these systems allows the crew to make precise adjustments in real time, enhancing the yacht’s agility and responsiveness.
- Data Analytics: Modern racing yachts, including the AC75, rely heavily on data analytics. The AC75 is equipped with sensors and data acquisition systems that provide real-time feedback on various performance metrics. This data is used to make informed decisions about sail trim, foil adjustments, and race strategy, providing a competitive edge in the high-stakes world of America’s Cup racing.
The Role of New Zealand in AC75 Development
New Zealand has played a pivotal role in the development and success of the AC75 class. Emirates Team New Zealand, this country’s representative in the America’s Cup, has been at the forefront of AC75 innovation. The team’s success in the 2017 America’s Cup with their AC50 catamaran laid the groundwork for the AC75’s development.
Key figures in the New Zealand design and build teams include naval architects, engineers, and designers who have contributed to the AC75’s evolution. Their expertise in high-performance yacht design, combined with New Zealand’s strong tradition in competitive sailing, has been instrumental in bringing the AC75 to life.
Challenges and Triumphs
The journey from concept to cutting-edge racing yacht has not been without its challenges. The development of the AC75 required overcoming numerous engineering and design hurdles, from ensuring structural integrity to fine-tuning the complex control systems.
One of the significant challenges was balancing the need for speed with the requirement for stability and control. The AC75’s hydrofoils and wing sails introduced new variables that had to be carefully managed to ensure the yacht’s performance and safety.
Despite these challenges, the AC75 has been a triumph of modern engineering and design. Its performance on the water has set new benchmarks for speed and agility in racing yachts, and its innovations have influenced the future of sailing technology.
Watching these boat go past you in real time is like watching magic on the water happen; a sight wonderful to see.
The Future of AC75 and Beyond
The evolution of the AC75 marks a significant milestone in the history of competitive sailing. The class’s introduction has pushed the boundaries of what is possible in yacht design and has set new standards for performance and technology.
Looking ahead, the lessons learned from the AC75 will likely influence the design of future racing yachts. The advancements in hydrofoils, wing sails, and onboard systems will continue to drive innovation in the sport, paving the way for new developments and challenges.
The AC75 has demonstrated the potential for high-speed, high-performance sailing, and its legacy will undoubtedly inspire future generations of sailors and designers. As the sport continues to evolve, the AC75 will remain a symbol of cutting-edge technology and a testament to the relentless pursuit of excellence in sailing.
The journey of the AC75 from concept to cutting-edge racing yacht is a remarkable story of innovation, engineering prowess, and competitive spirit. From its revolutionary hydrofoils and wing sails to its sophisticated control systems and data analytics, the AC75 represents the pinnacle of modern sailing technology. As the sport of sailing continues to evolve, the legacy of the AC75 will serve as a benchmark for future advancements and a testament to the extraordinary achievements of the world’s leading yacht designers and builders.

Visiting New Zealand in 2021
Alongside the america's cup, what does the 2021 calendar in new zealand have in store for visiting superyachts.
The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron will be marking its 150th anniversary in 2021 alongside the America’s Cup. This means a packed year of events and celebrations, offering an exciting opportunity for visiting superyachts to experience the best of what New Zealand has to offer.
“The 150-year legacy of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron is worthy of more than just one event at one time,” says Aaron Young, vice commodore of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. “So we are marking this with a year of celebratory events and occasions, the pinnacle of which will be the hosting of the 36th America’s Cup. New Zealand is certainly the place to be in 2021 and visitors to Auckland during this time are in for a treat like never before when it comes to celebrating our rich sailing heritage.”
The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron is particularly looking forward to hosting many visiting superyachts and owners. “A full calendar of events from December 2020 through to April 2021 means fun on and off the water,” adds Young. “Owners and visitors can expect good down-to-earth and relaxed ‘kiwi’ hospitality. Our amazing and unique cruising waters around New Zealand are a must for any visiting yacht and we are doing all we can to make sure visitors won’t want to leave too quickly.”
“Our amazing and unique cruising waters around New Zealand are a must for any visiting yacht and we are doing all we can to make sure visitors won’t want to leave too quickly.”
The celebrations kick off with a race to Kawau Island on New Year’s Eve 2020, followed by the Kawau New Year’s Day Regatta, both of which are expected to attract the attention of visiting superyachts. An exciting and diverse calendar will then begin, including superyacht regattas in both the Bay of Islands and Auckland, as well as a superyacht fishing competition to ensure motoryachts are involved in the action. The Squadron also expects a number of J Class Yachts to come to New Zealand, with planned sailing in the Bay of Islands in February and Auckland in March.
To ensure that yachting and various associations are properly represented during this auspicious year, the RNZYS set up a 150th anniversary committee to roll out this series of events and regattas. The committee is working closely with Emirates Team New Zealand and supporting associations such as NZ Marine.
“We appreciate that New Zealand is a long way to come for a lot of yachts – it’s a destination – and we want to make it as enjoyable as possible for owners and crew,” says Peter Busfield, executive director of NZ Marine Industry Association. “As well as a month-long event calendar, part of the plan has been to build up facilities, optimise the country’s existing business potential and work with the government to ensure we are a user-friendly destination.”
New Zealand has a long-established marine industry renowned for maintenance and refit, and this is being enhanced by the development of berthing and facilities in anticipation of an influx of yachts in 2020/21 for the America's Cup. As well as being able to take advantage of New Zealand’s yacht-friendly regulations that allow foreign-flagged vessels temporary entry for up to 24 months and the ability to charter in its waters, yachts will have access to new infrastructure including a superyacht marina in the Bay of Islands, a superyacht village in Auckland for the America’s Cup, a new 320-tonne travelift at Vessel Works in the Bay of Plenty and a new 720-tonne travelift at Orams Marine in Auckland. DYT Yacht Transport is also putting on extra sailings to bring yachts to New Zealand for 2020/21 and take them back to Europe in time for the summer in the Mediterranean.
Having considered the lessons learned from the berthing and anchorage arrangements at the last America’s Cup in Bermuda, NZ Marine will be organising a superyacht VIP programme for yachts anchored in Auckland Harbour during the event. “From the registrations of interest that we have already received, we are expecting around 160 superyachts over the America’s Cup period,” says Busfield. “With only 100 berths available, that means there will likely be around 60 yachts at anchor, so we are working on a VIP programme to give those yachts easy access to the village and marinas and make their experience as smooth as possible.”
The America’s Cup has a longstanding superyacht following and, with the Pacific rising in popularity as a superyacht destination , the 36th edition is sure to see an increase the numbers of yachts in the region in the lead up to, during and after the event. Some yachts will also be planning to make the most of the trip south and extend their itineraries to the nearby cruising grounds around Fiji, French Polynesia and Australia. This will be an important time for the Pacific because many destinations are ramping up their superyacht offering in anticipation of increased activity and, for superyacht owners, the buzz forming around the region makes it an optimal time to visit.

Captain of yacht that sank off Sicily faces manslaughter investigation, Italian media say
Under Italian laws, being under investigation doesn’t imply being guilty and doesn’t necessarily lead to criminal charges.
By The Associated Press • Published August 26, 2024 • Updated on August 26, 2024 at 1:45 pm
Prosecutors in Italy have placed under investigation the captain of a superyacht that sank during a storm off Sicily last week, killing seven people , Italian media reported Monday.
James Cutfield, a 51-year old New Zealand national, is being investigated for possible manslaughter and culpable shipwreck, Italian dailies reported.
24/7 New York news stream: Watch NBC 4 free wherever you are
Prosecutors in Termini Imerese didn’t reply to calls to confirm the reports.
On Saturday, chief prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio confirmed an investigation had been launched but said a suspect hadn't been identified. He said his team will consider each possible element of responsibility including those of the captain, the crew, individuals in charge of supervision and the yacht’s manufacturer.
Cutfield was among 15 survivors of the sinking that killed British tech magnate Mike Lynch , his daughter Hannah and five others.

The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged luxury yacht, went down near the Mediterranean island in southern Italy last Monday.

Investigators are focusing on how a sailing vessel deemed “unsinkable” by its manufacturer, Italian shipyard Perini Navi, sank while a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed.
Prosecutors said the event was “extremely rapid” and could have been a “downburst” — a localized, powerful wind that descends from a thunderstorm and spreads out rapidly upon hitting the ground.
The crew was saved, except for the chef, while six passengers were trapped in the hull.

Inside the shocking Sicily yacht tragedy that left 7 people dead
There was a violent storm, but even then, luxury yachts are built to weather such events. so why did this boat sink off the coast of sicily, leaving seven people dead, by natalie finn | e news • published august 24, 2024 • updated on august 24, 2024 at 9:34 am.

But what was supposed to be a routine pleasure cruise aboard a superyacht turned deadly all the same on the morning of Aug. 19 when the 184-foot Bayesian got caught in a storm and sank off the coast of Sicily .
"I can't remember the last time I read about a vessel going down quickly like that," Stephen Richter of SAR Marine Consulting told NBC News . "You know, completely capsizing and going down that quickly, a vessel of that nature, a yacht of that size."
Of the 22 people onboard, including crew, seven people died. The last of the bodies was recovered Aug. 23, an expectedly sad coda to what had already been a tragic week as the search for answers as to how this happened got underway.
And to be sure, every minute of the Bayesian's ill-fated outing is being fiercely scrutinized, starting with the general seaworthiness of the vessel itself.
Because, frankly, this was a freak occurrence.

"Boats of this size, they’re taking passengers on an excursion or a holiday," Richter explained. "They are not going to put them in situations where it may be dangerous or it may be uncomfortable, so this storm that popped up was obviously an anomaly. These vessels that carry passengers, they’re typically very well-maintained, very well-appointed."
But in this case, a $40 million yacht sank, seven people are dead—including a billionaire tech mogul and his 18-year-old daughter—and morbid fascination doesn't need a second wind.

Here is how the story of the Sicily yacht tragedy has unfolded so far:
What happened to the yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily?
The Bayesian had set off from the Sicilian port of Milazzo on Aug. 14 at capacity with 12 guests and 10 crewmembers aboard.
The aluminum-hulled vessel was built in 2008 by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi and registered in the U.K. Cruise sites listed it as available for charter at $215,000 per week, per the Associated Press.
On the morning of Aug. 19, the superyacht was anchored off the coast of Porticello, a small fishing village in the Sicilian province of Palermo (also the name of Sicily's capital city), when a violent storm hit.
The vessel "suddenly sank" at around 5 a.m. local time, seemingly due to "the terrible weather conditions," the City Council of Bagheria announced shortly afterward, per NBC News .
At the time, only one person was confirmed dead—the ship's chef—but six others were said to be missing. The 15 survivors—who managed to make it onto an inflatable life boat, according to emergency officials—were rescued that morning by the crew of another yacht that had been nearby when the storm hit.
"Fifteen people inside," Karsten Borner, the Dutch captain of the ship that was able to help (the Sir Robert Baden Powell), told reporters afterward, per Reuters. "Four people were injured, three heavily injured, and we brought them to our ship. Then we communicated with the coast guard, and after some time, the coast guard came and later picked up injured people."
When the storm hit, his boat ran into "a strong hurricane gust," Borner said, "and we had to start the engine to keep the ship in an angled position."
They "managed to keep the ship in position," he continued, but once the storm died down, they realized the other boat that had been behind them—the Bayesian—was gone.
The wreck ended up settling 165 feet below the surface, according to Italy's national fire department.
Fire officials said that divers, a motorboat and a helicopter were deployed to search for the missing.
Meanwhile, footage was captured of the ship capsizing on closed-circuit TV about a half-mile away from where it was anchored.
In the video obtained by NBC News, the illuminated 250-foot aluminum mast of the ship appears to list severely to one side before disappearing completely. Survivors recalled having just a few minutes to literally abandon ship.
Who were the seven people who died when the yacht Bayesian sank?
The tragedy initially became headline news because billionaire tech mogul Mike Lynch—"Britain's Bill Gates," some U.K. media called him—was among the missing. His body was ultimately recovered Aug. 22 .
"They told me that suddenly they found themselves catapulted into the water without even understanding how they had got there," Dr. Fabio Genco, head of the Palermo Emergency Medical Services, told NBC News Aug. 22. "And that the whole thing seems to have lasted from 3 to 5 minutes."
Genco said he got to Porticello about an hour after the Bayesian capsized.
Survivors "told me that it was all dark, that the yacht hoisted itself up and then went down," he said. "All the objects were falling on them. That’s why I immediately made sure, by asking them questions, if they had any internal injuries."
Why did the yacht sink?
Italian prosecutors are investigating to determine what transpired before the boat went down, according to NBC News.
Meanwhile, the CEO of shipbuilder Perini's parent company The Italian Sea Group defended the vessel itself as "unsinkable."
Perini boats "are the safest in the most absolute sense," Giovanni Costantino told Sky News Aug. 22 . What happened to the Bayesian "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other," he continued. "This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact."
Costantino said it had to have been human error that led to the boat sinking, declaring, "Mistakes were made."
"Everything that was done reveals a very long summation of errors," he told newspaper Corriere della Sera Aug. 21, in an interview translated from Italian. "The people should not have been in the cabins, the boat should not have been at anchor."
The weather was "all predictable," he continued, adding that the storm "was fully legible in all the weather charts. It couldn't have been ignored."
The yacht's captain, identified as James Cutfield of New Zealand, was taken to Termini Imerese hospital for treatment. From there, he told La Repubblica, per Sky News , that he didn't see the storm coming.
Borner, the captain of the ship that rescued the 15 Bayesian survivors, told NBC News that he noticed the storm come in at 4 a.m. local time, and saw what looked to him like a waterspout, a type of tornado that forms above water.
The International Centre for Waterspout Research posted on X Aug. 19 that it had "confirmed 18 waterspouts today off the coasts of Italy. Some were powerful waterspouts, one of which may have been responsible for the sinking of a large yacht off of Sicily."
Borner said he didn't know why the Bayesian sank so quickly, guessing "it may have something to do with the mast, which was incredibly long." (A tall mast, even with its sails down, means there's more surface area exposed to wind, which can result in tipping.)
Confirming that one person was dead and six unaccounted for immediately following the wreck on Aug. 19, Salvo Cocina of Sicily's civil protection agency told reporters that a waterspout had struck the area overnight.
"They were in the wrong place at the wrong time," he said.
The 59-year-old founder of software firm Autonomy had been on the trip with his wife Angela Bacares and their 18-year-old, Oxford-bound daughter Hannah to celebrate his recent acquittal in the U.S. on fraud and conspiracy charges stemming from the $11.7 billion purchase of his company by Hewlett-Packard in 2011.
In a bizarre turn of events, Lynch's co-defendant at trial, Stephen Chamberlain, the former vice president of finance at Autonomy, died after being taken off life support following a road accident on Aug. 17. Chamberlain's attorney told Reuters Aug. 20 that his friend and client had been out for a run when he was "fatally struck" by a car.
Meanwhile, multiple people who contributed to Lynch's defense were on the cruise with him and his family.
The bodies of Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer—who testified on Lynch's behalf—and his wife Judy Bloomer, as well as lawyer Chris Morvillo, a partner at the U.S. firm Clifford Chance, and his wife Neda Morvillo, a jewelry designer, were recovered on Aug. 21 .
In a LinkedIn post thanking the team that successfully defended Lynch, Morvillo wrote, per Sky News , "And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo. None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home. And they all lived happily ever after…"
The first casualty confirmed Aug. 19 was the ship's Canadian-Antiguan chef, later identified as Recaldo Thomas.
"He was a one-of-a-kind special human being," a friend of Thomas told The Independent . "Incredibly talented, contagious smile and laugh, an incredible voice with a deep love of the ocean and the moon. I spoke to him nearly every day. He loved his life his friends and his job."
Hannah's body was the last of the missing six to be found , with divers bringing her remains ashore on Aug. 23.
Lynch and Bacares, who was rescued, also shared a 21-year-old daughter, according to The Times.
While awaiting trial, Lynch—who maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings—had spent 13 months under house arrest in San Francisco. Back home in London afterward, he admitted to The Times in July that he'd been afraid of dying in prison if he'd been found guilty. (He faced a possible 25-year sentence.)
"It's bizarre, but now you have a second life," he reflected. "The question is, what do you want to do with it?"
