A Brief History of the Club

There were several important years since then - milestones in the growth of the Club:

The past 100 years have seen good times and bad times, in fact, during the Depression, some of the members found it difficult to afford the $5.00 annual dues!

But the Club persevered and grew into one of the largest on Lake Michigan, through hard work and the dedication of it's members. The present Clubhouse was completely built by the members. That same dedication persists today.

So, from a very humble beginning in 1913, SOUTH SHORE YACHT CLUB has grown to a Club that is the envy of many other Clubs on the Great Lakes.

For them, SSYC is all about fellowship, in the most romantic spot on Milwaukee's lakefront. Smack in the heart of the city's most happening neighborhood.

You are right. People also like South Shore Yacht Club because in addition to the great people the slips are actually less expensive than they are at the public marina, Mckinley. They also have a large mooring area and many activities for members and guests.

Welcome to the 2025 Queen's Cup Race!

The 2025 south shore yacht club queen’s cup® race.

Plan now to enter the 86th challenge of one of the most storied yacht races on the Great Lakes. This year’s night race across Lake Michigan departs from Milwaukee, WI for Muskegon, MI on June 27, 2025. Both Milwaukee’s South Shore Yacht Club and the Muskegon Yacht Club will provide an experience worthy of this 86th Queen’s Cup Race. The race is open to all boats with a valid 2025 Midwest Performance Handicap Racing Fleet (MW-PHRF) rating certificate and ORC rating certificates. We will continue to have starts for the shorthanded fleet (with a limit of two crew per boat) and a cruising fleet for non-spinnaker monohulls. We are looking forward to increasing the participation of one design boats such as the GL52, J/111, Beneteau 40.7, Beneteau 36.7, and Tartan 10s. The racing between these boats and other one design boats has been close in prior years. The fee structure is based on boat length. This helps to make the fee schedule more affordable for smaller boats.
