The Hinckley Company – James P. McManus 1963-2015
Southwest Harbor, Maine (Company Announcement) – The Hinckley Co. has announced that Jim McManus, the company’s president and CEO since June 1, 2007, died Tuesday, Nov. 24. The cause, according to Hinckley, was cancer. The Board of Directors and the employees of the Hinckley Company mourn the passing of their friend and Chief Executive Officer, James P. McManus.
“Jim was appointed to the role in June of 2007 and was often heard to call it his dream job. He worked tirelessly to see the company through its darkest times in 2008-2009, and led the company to the extraordinary heights it has reached in recent years. Never boastful or arrogant, Jim was the consummate optimist finding the best in everything and bringing out the best in all of those he touched.”
“Jim was instrumental in attracting new investment to Hinckley in 2010. The company developed and launched a series of five highly successful new models and acquired Hunt Yachts in 2013 under Jim’s leadership. Hinckley today is very much a part of the Jim McManus legacy.”
“A native New Englander, Jim was a graduate of Yale and Harvard Business School. He worked in corporate finance with Lehman Brothers and management consulting with McKinsey & Company. While at the Aramark Corporation, he served successively as President of three operating divisions and later served as President and CEO of the Zoots Corporation. He was an avid boater who loved to spend weekends aboard his Hinckley Talaria 44.”
“Jim resided in Charlestown and Hyannis, Massachusetts. He is survived by his wife, three children, his parents, sisters and a legion of friends and colleagues who cherished him. Jim passed away after a brave and unflagging battle with cancer.”
“His passion and spark will continue to inspire all who knew him.”
Please honor Jim McManus at a wake on Monday November 30th from 3:00 until 7:00 pm at St. Cecilia Parish Church, 18 Belvidere St., in Boston’s Back Bay. Celebrate his life afterwards at the Black Rose at 160 State Street. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 am on Tuesday December 1st at St. Cecilia’s.
In lieu of flowers, donations will be welcomed to a scholarship fund in Jim’s honor. Please check back for detailed information.

JP McManus crowned champion owner again
JP McManus nominated I Am Maximus’ Randox Grand National success as the highlight of another championship-winning season in Britain.
McManus was crowned champion owner for the eighth successive season at Sandown, with Jonbon’s striking Grade One victory in the bet365 Celebration Chase at the Esher track providing a fine finale to the 2023-24 term.
However, I Am Maximus gave McManus his defining moment of the campaign when carrying the famous green and gold to his third triumph in the Aintree showpiece, with the 73-year-old expressing his love for the Merseyside marathon.
“We have had a good run this year and I have a great team of trainers, stable staff and jockeys and I couldn’t have done it without them,” said McManus.
“The Grand National was special, it’s the most special race and if I could pick one race in the world I would want to win, it is the Grand National. We celebrated well.”
Those sentiments were echoed by McManus’ long-time retained rider AP McCoy who believes his current squad is thronging with talent, with I Am Maximus and star novice Fact To File both Cheltenham Gold Cup contenders to get excited about next season.
“To win the Grand National with all his grandkids there, who are all old enough to remember it, meant a lot to him and he has probably the best team of horses he has ever had now,” said McCoy.
“There are a lot less in the UK, but there’s a lot better horses than he’s ever had and he loves it, he genuinely has the passion for it and that is what sets him apart. He will go down the farm in the summer time and he will be picking out horses and thinking is that going to be that and dreaming of what is going to happen the following year. He loves horse racing and I know everyone in that position should do but he genuinely loves it.”

Irish magnate JP McManus is spending around €150million in creating the ultimate beach hideaway on one of the world’s most exclusive stretches of coastline.
Set by golden sands in Barbados, long a haunt of the rich and famous, it is probably the most expensive holiday home ever built.
But it appears on this latest project, money is no object for the tycoon, who co-owns the renowned Sandy Lane Resort just along the road.
The beachside mansion has two wings, north and south, on the island’s “Platinum Coast”, where house prices average around £15million.
There are 11 huge en-suite bedrooms for JP’s family, friends and very special VIP guests.
Such is the lavish nature of the decor that workmen from India, Pakistan and Afghanistan have joined forces with labourers, interior design experts and fitters from the UK, Italy, Germany, France and Caribbean islands such as Trinidad and Tobago.
Middle East expertise was needed to create marble reception areas – with glassblowers used to produce magnificent chandeliers.
Local workers skilled in the use of coral – good for absorbing water and maintaining heat – have been used to “insulate” balconies, walls and balustrades.
It has been around 18 months in construction, but should be finished within weeks, thanks to round-the-clock shifts.
They queue up every morning at the gate on the coast road as tourists pass on the way to the golf courses and restaurants of nearby Holetown and Bridgetown.
One worker said: “There have been teams here from the around the globe.
“They needed people from India, Pakistan and Afhganistan. But there are also fitters from the UK. Countries like Germany, Italy and France have also got workers here.
“The language used is English. Many may not speak English, but we made sure their managers did.
“It has worked and is a very impressive property, just as the Sandy Lane is down the road. No expense has been spared.”
The Sandy Lane Resort has attracted business tycoons, royalty and stars such as Madonna, Simon Cowell and Tiger Woods for years.
JP and a group of fellow tycoons invested around €355million on transforming the property after buying it in 1998.
However, the Irish magnate’s new holiday home is a private residence which will be used by him for family holidays in Barbados.
Construction on the site, which is heavily guarded and surrounded by high walls, fencing and barbed wire, is expected to enter its final phase next month.
It should to be ready to take its first very lucky visitors by Christmas.
Billionaire John Patrick McManus, known as JP, is a former bookie. The dad of three owns more than 100 horses and has a €20million mansion in Limerick.
He has also raised tens of millions of euro for charity. Diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2009, he made a full recovery after treatment in America.
A Sandy Lane spokeswoman declined to comment on JP’s latest venture.
She stressed it was not part of the hotel complex, but a private residence, despite being “next door” to Sandy Lane.

JP McManus’s family onto a winner with London mansion as Chelsea home snapped up for €70m sees value rise to €100m
McManus’s son John and his wife Emma have been working on extensive renovations within the magnificent mansion

THE family of racehorse owner JP McManus are on a winner with their London mansion.
They snapped up the Chelsea home for around €70million five years ago and have seen their investment rise in value to €100million.
McManus’s son John and his wife Emma have been working on extensive renovations within the magnificent mansion.
Coupled with the explosion in London property prices, the posh pad is now said to be the most expensive home owned by an Irish person.
The cream-painted gaff is in The Boltons, one of the most exclusive areas of the Royal Borough of Chelsea and Kensington.
Most of the houses on the street come equipped with a heated indoor swimming pool, sauna, gym, wine cellar and home cinema.
The McManus family made a planning application to extend their home to add two new rooms below ground level in 2013.
It is a Grade-II listed building, which means it has special architectural or historic interest.

The house is in one of the safest areas of London with 8.1 crimes reported per 1,000 residents in the 12 months prior to May 2016.
The average price of houses on the street is estimated to be around €32million which would put the six-figure McManus mansion as one of the most desirable.
Ten per cent of London’s super-prime sales in recent years have taken place in The Boltons, and the area has previously been home to pop icon Madonna, best-selling author Jeffrey Archer and US actor Douglas Fairbanks.
International businessman JP’s fortune was estimated at more than €1billion in the Sunday Times rich list this year, although his family’s fortune is said to be much more.
The racing man also owns a home on Dublin’s ‘millionaire’s row’, Ailesbury Road in Ballsbridge.

JP McManus horse with a perfect pedigree makes his hurdles debut at Galway 🤩
JP McManus and Willie Mullins is always a deadly combination. This makes it very interesting that they join forces once again with one fascinating runner at Galway on Monday. The horse in question is perfectly bred and his pedigree suggests he’s born to be a champion. He is the first foal of Champion Hurdle-winner Annie Power and is by arguably the greatest sire of all-time, Galileo.
Mullins’ charge is set to make his hurdles debut at Galway on Monday and there will be plenty of eyes on him. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
5.10 Galway
Mystical Power (1-1, Paddy Power) is set to make his hurdles debut in the opening race of the Galway Festival on Monday. We have seen him on the track once already and he made a winning start to his career at Ballinrobe back in May. That debut victory came in a bumper and the third has since boosted the form, finishing second by a narrow margin at Cork last time.
He begins his hurdles career over an extended two miles here and it seems like a sensible starting point. Although it’s likely that he’ll want further in time, he should possess the requisite speed to win over this trip at this stage of his career. Annie Power was probably better suited to 2m4f, despite winning the Champion Hurdle and her first son should follow suit.
It’s highly likely that Cheltenham is the plan for this regally bred gelding and he’ll be expected to get off the mark at the first time of asking over timber. Anything over than an impressive victory would probably be disappointing but there will be plenty of interested parties keeping a close eye on his career.

JP McManus says Grand National win brought happiness after daughter-in-law Emma's tragic death
The last few years for the McManus household have been tough. After receiving an award at this year's Horsing Racing Ireland Awards, he described how winning the Grand National had brought some light back into their lives.
Only two years ago the family suffered a great loss when Emma McManus, Jp's daughter-in-law died suddenly while holidaying at their home in Barbados.
Emma had been enjoying post-Christmas festivities with loved ones at the family’s private residence. It was later revealed that she had complained to her family of feeling unwell.
Emma McManus, née Ledbetter, mother of three died on December 30th, 2021 aged just 40.
According to the Irish Independent JP in the past has been honest about the 'doom and gloom' that has been lingering over his family since the tragic event.
When Rachael Blackmore won at Aintree, it was just three months after Emma's death. He described that day as a 'magical day,' bringing some happiness back into their lives.
He went on to recall how many of them felt on the day and that it soon became a day that they would always cherish.
'Everybody was very, very emotional along with everything else and to have Rachael ride it, the first lady to ride the winner in the National and she gave it such a polished ride for good measure, it was so exciting and a day I'll never forget.
Last January marked the first anniversary since Emma's death and a memorial service was held at Coral Ridge Memorial Gardens in Barbados. Friends and family attended the mass and those who could not be there tuned in online.
Speaking at the service Emma's husband, also called JP spoke of how 'no words can describe the pain and sense of loss that I feel since my beautiful Ems passed.' He went on to describe how she 'was the centre of our family.'
