ICON Yachts

Chris clifford, all purpose vessels.

Micca Ferrero, Owner of ICON Yachts

ICON Yachts has a long history in shipbuilding, with a reputation for delivering some of the world’s most impressive superyachts. Founded in 2005 and headquartered in Harlingen, ICON Yachts has developed its expertise in yacht conversion and refit projects, establishing a leading position in the sector of Explorer yachts and purpose vessels.

However, in recent years, the company has pivoted towards more sustainable and eco-friendly solutions. The results are vessels that combine luxury with environmental consciousness. The conversion specialist shipyard defines its explorer yachts as purpose-vessels because they are designed and built with a specific set of goals in mind. These goals include exploration, sustainability, and science support, which are all crucial components of what defines a purpose-vessel.

THE BASICS OF CONVERSIONS In general, conversions refer to ‘the process of changing or causing something to change from one form to another’. Due to the dynamic nature of the process, the Dutch company ICON Yachts is always keen to embrace change. The conversion explorer yachts are built using existing vessels that have already had a proven life at sea. These vessels are then repurposed, rather than scrapped, to create something entirely new. This process significantly reduces waste and the environmental impact.

THE PERKS OF CONVERSIONS When it comes to deciding whether to embark on a new-build or a conversion project, many aspects are assessed and taken into account. From the perspective of conversions, there are undoubtedly some relevant points that evolve:

From an emotional standpoint, a conversion allows the client to see and ‘touch’ something tangible from the very beginning. Hence, the whole project begins with the meticulous choice of the platform vessel, which is supported by a long and thorough feasibility study. By being able to concretely see the transformation of the platform vessel, a client can feel more involved in the whole process.

Thus, starting from an already existing platform vessel ICON is able to save time in the engineering phase. Moreover, by cleverly re-using existing systems, the typical long-lead times for plant and machinery items no longer influence the build period.

However, optimising time is not the most important element at ICON Yachts. Indeed, converting a vessel also has less impact on the environment. As an example, by retaining the existing vessel’s hull and machinery on one of ICON´s conversions, the project has the potential to reduce the carbon footprint by 3,000 tons of greenhouse gases. At the same time, it is possible to save up to 80% of the existing structure, while the major obsolete can be sold back into the market for recycling.

The shipbuilding itself reflects the company’s ethos. Since 2021, the ICON facility only uses 100% green energy, and can also pride itself to be the first Dutch shipyard to achieve the ISO 14001 certification. The latter, awarded by Lloyd’s Register to the shipyard, is an internationally agreed standard that sets out the requirements for an environmental management system.

ICON Yachts Before and After of MASTER

MASTER will be upgraded with the latest electrically powered Voith- Schneider Propellers (eVSP). This unique all-electric environmentally friendly propulsion system is provided with incredible features, which include increased overall efficiency and comfort, dynamic positioning, higher stabilisation with reduced noise levels.

Furthermore, this future-proof system is already in compliance with the upcoming IMO Tier IV regulations and significantly reduces emissions. Five highly efficient generators will generate electricity, with fuel capacity enabling the vessel to travel vast distances of up to +9000nm at a comfortable 10kn cruising speed.

SUPPORTING THE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH Together with implementing technological innovation to its latest projects, ICON is also striving to promote scientific research onboard its converted vessels. Given the success of its 77m converted explorer yachts LEGEND or RAGNAR in terms of scientific abilities, ICON Yachts is committed to designing yachts suitable for scientific purposes when guests are not aboard.

Conversion vessel platforms often feature existing equipment ready to participate in research programmes. Hence, with relatively simple and low investment taken early on in the design process, it is possible to integrate research facilities. This is why ICON is solidifying its network of partners like The International SeaKeepers Society, which promotes oceanographic research, conservation, and education through direct involvement with the yachting community. This enables the yachting community to take full advantage of their unique potential to advance marine sciences and raise awareness about global ocean issues which affect all those in this industry.

ICON Yachts Project MASTER render

Recognising the need for change means being open to new ideas, experiences, and perspectives. It means stepping outside of your comfort zone and challenging established business practices to develop something different.

“To embrace change, we must allow ourselves the opportunity to learn and grow, to be a strong partner in this constantly evolving industry.”

ICON Yachts Project “MISSION”: Yachting with a Purpose, Yachting with a Change

Icon yachts project "mission": yachting with a purpose, yachting with a change.

ICON  Yachts  proudly  announces  the  launch  of  their  new-build  concept,  “MISSION”.  Guided  by  the principle  of  “Yachting  with  a  Purpose,  Yachting  with  a  Change,”  MISSION  sets  a  new  standard  for purpose-driven   expedition   vessels,   merging   current   technology   with   a   deep   commitment   to environmental conservation.

At the heart of MISSION lies a vision that focuses on three pivotal principles: sustainability, modularity, and exploration capabilities. Designed for both private and commercial use, MISSION will accommodate 12  guests  with  the  potential  to  expand  to  18,  along  with  a  crew  of  18  and  space  for  up  to  6 supernumeraries  (i.e.  Expedition  staff).  The  vessel’s  operational  scope  encompasses  global  travel, including polar regions during non-ice conditions. She will be equipped with helicopter landing facilities and ample storage space for tenders and toys, plus expedition equipment.

“The  project  embodies  an  ‘experience-focused’  design,  meaning  the  vessel  is  designed  to  facilitate specialised  expeditions,  exploration,  and  yacht  cruises.  MISSION  incorporates  all  the  amenities  and functionalities  on  board  to  create  experiences  and  lasting  memories,”  says  Bernd  Weel,  the  Dutch designer  responsible  for  the  project’s  exterior  design  at  the  award-winning  company  Bernd  Weel Design. He further emphasizes that “the vessel’s design reflects its multipurpose character, from the active lifestyle sports deck to the shipping container docks. MISSION’s versatile design offers a wide array of possibilities.”

“As  for  the  exterior  design  –  explains  Weel  –    it  showcases  geometrical  elements  characterized  by strong,  defined  lines  and  a  hexagonal-styled  mid  section  that  ‘holds’  the  containers.  Our  inspiration stemmed from outdoor products designed to withstand tough expeditions and SUV’s capable of carrying various  cargo  items.  The  result  is  a  robust,  ‘go-anywhere’  design  with  a  contemporary  and  modern appearance.”

Another key innovation factor of MISSION is its modularity based on the Standard Shipping Container principle. The use of containers allows owners or special charters to adapt the vessel to their evolving needs by incorporating modular areas within or onboard the yacht. For  instance,  one  container  could  be  fully  equipped  with  the  necessary  scientific  instruments  for conducting research on whale species in the Antarctic regions. While a second could serve as a storage space for an array of water toys to provide onboard entertainment for the younger guests and children while they enjoy swimming in the Mediterranean waters. These dual scenarios can coexist seamlessly without altering the vessel’s primary purpose. Designed to facilitate marine scientific research and data collection, MISSION will  enable owners and guests to not just be observers, but active participants in philanthropic efforts. “MISSION represents ICON’s  commitment  to  innovation  and  purpose-driven  travel,”  says  Micca  Ferrero,  owner  of  ICON Yachts.  “It  redefines  what  an  explorer  yacht  can  achieve  –  from  sustainability  and  modularity  to profound  experiential  impact.  We’re  proud  to  set  new  benchmarks  and  lead  the  way  in  supporting sustainable exploration.”

With  its  transformative  modularity  and  uncompromising  commitment  to  purpose-driven  travel, MISSION redefines new horizons for expedition yachting.

By Katia Damborsky   27 January 2020

After a 2-year conversion with Icon Yachts, the 68m/224ft explorer yacht RAGNAR has been given a new lease of life as a luxury charter yacht .

RAGNAR made her first appearance on Friday, showing off her all-new look as she emerged from the shed at Icon's facilities in Harlingen.

The yacht marks an exciting addition to the charter fleet. She is LY3 (Large Yacht Code) compliant and is one of the few explorer yachts with an ICE Class A1 hull.

She will be available to charter in some of the most high-latitude regions on earth, as she is equipped with PC5-rated ice-breaking pods that are capable of ‘chewing through’ thick sheets of Arctic ice.

RAGNAR superyacht rolls out of shed at ICON

Initially launched in 2012 as an icebreaker supply vessel named Sanaborg, RAGNAR has been undergoing a conversion with the Dutch yard since July 2017.

Her exterior styling comes courtesy of Redman Whiteley-Dixon, and borrow inspiration from "medieval war craftsmanship", and "British heritage", according to the design studio. She has been described as a "rhino disguised as a swan" by Icon.

RAGNAR model yacht helideck with helicopter

She is one of the few explorer yachts with an ICE Class A1 hull.

The 2,450 GT superyacht features a certified helicopter landing pad and a dedicated deck for housing a locker of accessories, including a Ripsaw EV2 super tank, Sea explorer submarine and a light utility helicopter with refuelling station.

On-board highlights include a fully-equipped wellness centre with a snow room, rainforest shower and classic spa facilities including a steam room and sauna.

Model of RAGNAR superyacht

ICON Yachts has added extra cabins to house a total of 16 guests in seven staterooms, which includes two owner’s suites.

Other stand-out features include a video games centre, a large swimming pool, a wine cellar and a deck jacuzzi.

Luxury superyacht RAGNAR being launched

She has been converted for an experienced owner, who has extensive experience chartering expedition yachts in some of the planet’s most remote cruising regions.

Following delivery, the yacht will be open to charter in destinations including Greenland and  Alaska .

Interior shots of the yacht haven't been released yet, but the YachtCharterFleet team managed to snap some shots of the RAGNAR model during the 2019 Explorer Yacht Summit.

Icon of the Seas: 12 Big Things to Know About the New Ship

Icon of the Seas — the latest ship from Royal Caribbean — is no doubt the biggest story in cruising in years. It’s the new largest cruise ship in the world… offers a full waterpark at sea… seven swimming pools… and it simply looks like nothing else on the ocean.

icon yachts wikipedia

It’s likely that you’ve seen images of the ship already as it’s gotten lots of conversation on social media and Royal Caribbean has heavily marketed Icon.

But what you might not get from a Facebook post or a 30-second TV commercial are many of the details behind the ship. As Icon of the Seas makes its debut, here are a dozen things you should know about this wild new cruise ship…

Icon of the Seas Is the Biggest Cruise Ship in the World

First and foremost, one of the main reasons you’ve no doubt heard of Icon of the Seas is that it sets the mark as the new biggest cruise ship on the planet.

For years, Royal Caribbean ships have already held this crown with the line’s Oasis-class ships coming in as the largest in the world. Icon of the Seas — the first of the new Icon class — are about 6% larger than the Oasis-class ships.

Icon comes in at 250,800 gross tons. For comparison, Wonder of the Seas, the now second-largest cruise ship in the world, measures 235,600 gross tons. That size means more of everything from things to do, to places to eat, to the fun you can have onboard.

The Ship Can Hold Nearly 10,000 People

As you might imagine, the world’s largest cruise ship can also carry a lot of people. It’s literally a small city at sea. At double occupancy (meaning two passengers to every cabin), it has a capacity of 5,610 passengers. But at maximum capacity (meaning those cabins able to hold more passengers are completely full) that figure rises to a reported 7,600 passengers .

In addition, the ship is staffed with 2,350 crew members. All told, that means up to 9,950 people can be onboard at any moment .

No doubt that’s a lot, but given the size of the ship, there should still be plenty of elbow room. The gross tonnage divided by double occupancy gives a space ratio (a measure of amount of space per passenger) of 44.7. That’s actually the largest ratio in the entire fleet. For comparison, Wonder of the Seas has a ratio of 41.1.

Icon Is Sailing From Miami

It only makes sense that the biggest and newest cruise ship would sail from the cruise capital of the world. That’s exactly what Icon of the Seas is doing.

The ship homeports in Miami, sailing 7-day cruises all around the Caribbean from Mexico to The Bahamas. This schedule goes until at least the end of 2025, the latest that Royal Caribbean has bookable on their website.

Can’t make it to Miami? Another Icon-class ship will sail from Port Canaveral soon (more on this below).

The Cruise Fare Is Considerably Higher Than Other Ships

With any new cruise ship you normally find prices that are at a premium to older ships. This makes sense. With the latest and greatest ships, there’s more for passengers to see and do, leading to more demand.

But what’s surprising is just how much of a premium Icon of the Seas is able to charge. Cruzely analyzed prices back in April and found an average starting fare of $1,884 per person for an interior cabin in 2024 aboard Icon of the Seas.

Wonder of the Seas — the next newest ship in the fleet — had an average interior cabin price of $1,034 per person. That means Icon ran about $850 more per person, or about 82%.

In other words, if you want to sail the biggest, be ready to open up the wallet.

Icon of the Seas Is the Only Ship With the Category 6 Waterpark

icon yachts wikipedia

One reason that the ship can command higher prices? There’s a lot more to do. The best example of this is the brand-new Category 6 waterpark, found only on Icon of the Seas.

While other ships might have waterslides, no one has an experience like this. All told there are six different waterslides, ranging from drop slides to family raft slides for passengers to enjoy. There’s no charge for the slides, so expect it to be a popular place for kids (and adults!) to play.

The waterpark is actually just one part of Icon’s “Thrill Island” neighborhood that’s complete with everything from the classic Flowrider surf simulator to mini-golf, sport court, and more.

The Ship Offers 7 Pools… Including the Largest Pool at Sea

Hanging poolside is a classic staple of any Caribbean cruise. As you might guess, the largest cruise ship in the world takes that idea and puts it on steroids.

All told there are seven swimming pools aboard Icon. This includes the cruise line’s first pool with a swim-up bar (Swim & Tonic) and the largest pool on a cruise ship (Royal Bay) at 40,000 gallons.

There is also a suspended pool across the back of the ship that provides a spot high up on the ship with sweeping views of the horizon.

So no matter the pool vibe that you’re looking for, you’ll find something that fits the bill.

The Introduction of the AquaDome

icon yachts wikipedia

If you see a photo of Icon of the Seas, one of the things that jumps out is a large dome structure that sits atop the front of the ship like a hat. This space is one that’s completely new to the Icon class, and it’s called the AquaDome.

On Oasis-class ships, there is an AquaTheater at the back of the ship where performers put on a water show complete with high dives. Now that’s been moved indoors to the AquaDome, complete with diving area and an indoor waterfall. But during the day, this is a lounge area with sweeping ocean views while still being indoors and comfortable.

If there’s one thing some people will miss, the Solarium, which normally occupied this area on Oasis ships, is no longer there.

Larger Balcony Rooms Mean More Space

We mentioned the space ratio of Icon of the Seas being extremely generous despite the large number of passengers the ship can carry. One area that you might notice the extra space the most is in the cabin.

If sailing in a balcony cabin aboard Wonder of the Seas (the last ship before Icon), the standard balcony was 182 square feet with a 50 square foot balcony. Icon of the Seas has a standard balcony of 204 square feet with the same 50 square foot balcony. In other words, the room is about 12% larger.

You should note that the interior cabins seem slightly smaller. Our search saw standard interior cabins of 172 square feet on Wonder of the Seas but only 156 square feet on Icon.

Three Different Places to Watch a Show

One thing that will never happen on Icon of the Seas is passengers being bored. Of course there are all the traditional venues and things to do on a cruise ship. Gamble in the casino, have drink in the bar, go swimming, or lounge poolside. Have a meal, listen to live music, play trivia, or just sit on the balcony with a glass of wine.

But if you want to be actively entertained, Icon has you covered. In all, there are three different venues where the performance crew will put on a show. Icon has a traditional theater as seen on every cruise ship. And as mentioned there is the AquaDome where water-based shows will take place. The ship also has Absolute Zero, an ice-skating rink with ice shows during the cruise.

So no matter the day and whether you want water, ice, or a stage show, there will be something to see.

The Most Famous ‘Godfather’ Ever?

Instead of a “godfather” or “godmother” of the ship, Royal Caribbean has gone a slightly different route. Instead, the cruise line named an “Icon” of Icon of the Seas . In this case, it also happens to be one of the most famous figures on the planet.

World-famous soccer star Lionel Messi, arguably the greatest soccer player in history, has been tapped to be the “Icon” for the ship. Given that the star has recently moved to the United States to play for Inter Miami CF in the MLS — of which Royal Caribbean is a major partner — the naming of Messi as the “Icon” of Icon of the Seas seems like a perfect match.

A Sister Ship Already in Works

icon yachts wikipedia

You might think that with the introduction of this new ship, Royal Caribbean might take a moment to rest before continuing the growth of its fleet. That’s not the case at all. Already another Oasis-class ship, Utopia of the Seas, is set to debut in 2024.

But Icon of the Seas will have a sister ship in summer 2025 that’s already been announced as well. Star of the Seas is currently under construction. While we don’t know tons of details, we do know that it will homeport in Port Canaveral, putting two Icon-class ships in Florida.
