The second yacht in the SW82’ series Grande Orazio, was launched just six months after SW82#01 Feelin’ Good confirming the success of this mini-series.

The interior layout was extensively customized to offer ample volumes and maximum flexibility for the different uses the yacht has. Crew quarters and galley are located aft, while the saloon is midship and owner’s suite is forward.

Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta – Grande Orazio leads at Southern Wind Trophy

Porto Cervo, Italy. 6 June 2019. The Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta, organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and underway until Saturday 8 June, hosted racing only for boats from the Southern Wind Shipyard today, while the rest of the fleet had a scheduled rest day.

At 11.30 a.m. the warning signal sounded on time for the start on the waters off Porto Cervo. The mistral wind of 20 knots was stronger at the Bisce pass and the Secca di Tre Monti rock, the first natural mark on a course that brought the boats to round Monaci island and head back to Porto Cervo after having rounded a mark in front of the Pevero Gulf, covering a total of 14 miles.

The flagship of the Southern Wind fleet gathered in Porto Cervo, the SW105 Kiboko Tres, asserted its greater dimensions, reaching away from the very start and sailing solo to the finish. The situation behind the real-time leader was a very different one, with the two SW82s Ammonite and Grande Orazio engaged in an exciting tack-for-tack battle – with covering manoeuvres and tactical skirmishes.

Ammonite, with New Zealander Stu Bannatyne on tactics, led in the first part of the race followed half a length behind by Grande Orazio – tactician Stefano Spangaro – which overtook on the gybe at Monaci island, hoisting the gennaker for the close reach. Ammonite instead sailed lower and faster under Code Zero, making up ground, but wasn't able to put sufficient distance between herself and Grande Orazio, with the latter claiming the victory in compensated time.

A great result for YCCS member Massimiliano Florio, owner and helmsman of Grande Orazio, who triumphed by just 3 seconds in compensated time over Kiboko Tres and 1 minute 4 seconds over her sister ship Ammonite in third place. Once back on the dock he was happy to talk through the regatta along with Marcus Blackmore, owner of the SW82 Ammonite.

“We sailed head-to-head with these guys the whole time, we were always engaged with them, it was really fun. Especially with the wind constantly blowing at 22-23 knots. It was a short but very pleasant regatta.” commented Blackmore.

The SW82 Ammonite races with a crew of experienced professionals including Stacey Jackson: “I've taken part in two editions of the VOR, with team SCA and Vestas 11th Hour Racing, and 12 editions of the Rolex Sydney Hobart, most recently as the skipper of an all-female crew on Wild Oats X. It's my first time aboard Marcus' luxurious cruising superyacht, but in Australia I've been part of his TP52 team since 2011. The boat is called Hooligan, it used to be Azzurra, and here I am at the YCCS, it really is a small world. I've raced here before, and it is always pleasant: good wind, great food and hospitable people.”

On the social side of the event, tonight friends and crews of the Southern Wind Shipyard are invited to the characteristic local village of San Pantaleo for a convivial dinner in a farmhouse restaurant.

Racing resumes tomorrow for all classes at 11.30 a.m. with fresh wind from the eastern quadrants forecast.

This year’s 12th edition of the Southern Wind Shipyard (SWS) Trophy came to its end on Saturday, June 7, marked by a great success of sailing yacht Grande Orazio and superyacht Cape Arrow . The event took place at the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta , which was hosted by the lovely Sardinia yacht charter destination – Porto Cervo .

The 12th SWS Trophy

There was concern that the 4th regatta may have been cancelled due to lack of wind, but after a long wait at the starting line, sails were hoisted and the race began.

The shortened course of 20 miles among the islands, in light wind conditions of 6 to 11 knots, grouped the fleet, engaging the yachts in frequent tacking and jibing, turning the race into an exciting show.

Sailing yacht Grande Orazio, the brand new SW82#02, proved to be very fast, not only leading in her category (C class), but also dominating the 12th SWS Trophy.

Back at the Marina, after the race, the proud owner of Grande Orazio commented on the result: “I wish to dedicate this victory to Willy Persico and his team, for trusting and supporting my project since the beginning”.

Superyacht Cape Arrow, SW 100 RS, achieved the overall second place and third in the Loro Piana Super-yacht Regatta Class B division, while sailing yacht Whisper , SW78, ended in third place.

Luxury yacht Feelin’ Good , SW82#01, back from her season in the Caribbean , competed to the best of her cruising mode capability to the full satisfaction of her owner.

Maria Cristina Rapisardi, at the helm of SW 94 superyacht Windfall Pioneer Investment , expressed her great satisfaction on the performance of the boat.: She chartered the yacht for this event and is keen to repeat this exciting experience in the near future.

The veteran of the fleet, SW 100 charter yacht Farewell , contributed to make this Trophy unforgettable by offering exquisite banquets on the quayside of C pier.

SWS wishes to thank all those who have made this event possible: the event organizers Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and Boat International Media, Title Sponsor Loro Piana, the partners Pantaenius and Mumm Champagne. Next date is for June 2016, when we’ll be celebrating the 25th anniversary of this great South African venture.

Basargino looks like it was created in some kind of computer simulation game. And there, on a little piece of land you need to arrange cozy wooden comfortable houses, a farm, a church, a cafe and a restaurant with insanely delicious meals, an apiary, lakes with fish, a chicken coop and pastures. Visit the forge in Belokurikha and forge a horseshoe for good luck 

There is not a feminine equivalent for a blacksmith, therefore I will simply introduce Anna Biletskaya as the blacksmith. Anna, armed with a heavy hammer and an anvil, is able to forge a horseshoe for a horse in 15 minutes and a decorative horseshoe for luck in only 10 minutes. Well the last one is more in demand lately. Anna opened her smithy to visitors a few years ago. This blacksmith in a skirt shows the whole process during her short master classes: first heat a piece of metal over a fire, then take a hammer and beat it well on the anvil, pull it back, then bend it and put it back into the fire. Finally, cool and clean it.

Visit "The Gold of Altai"(Zoloto Altaya) - to bath in Sanduny or to ride a horse

A hot bath filled with herbs such as hypericum, yarrow, camomile and also a rejuvenating bathtub -  these are the Russian answer to the best Asian spa with plumeria flowers. Well, the Altai version looks more brutal, but you will quickly feel the great effect. The herbs are collected and specially prepared here, in "The Gold of Altai" eco-hotel on the shore of the lake. Bathhouses are warmed up in both old Russian traditional ways: the "black" banya (a smoke goes out of bathhouse through cracks in wooden walls) and the "white" banya (a smoke goes out of the bathhouse through a pipe). The professional bath attendants will help guests adjust the right amount of steam and smack them briskly all over their bodies with special bath brooms. The largest horse farm in this district is also located in the hotel area; you should not miss the chance to ride a horse at least around the local territory.

What else to do in Altai:

• Take a walk through the pine forest near Barnaul
• Stop by the village of Srostki, where Vasily Shukshin (the soviet movie director) was born
• Spend a day at the "Biruzovaya Katun" Resort
• Take a walk along Biysk and visit the museum of the Chuysky Tract
• Relax in the "Altay Palace", check-in to the only official gaming zone in Siberia
• Go to Lake Aya

Barnaul – the view from above

Barnaul is a city with a population of about 632 thousand people located in the south of Western Siberia at the confluence of the Barnaulka and the Ob rivers, the administrative center of the Altai Krai .

It was founded as a settlement at the Akinfiy Demidov silver smelting plant in 1730. The blast furnace on the city’s coat of arms reminds of those times. Today, it is a large industrial, cultural, medical, and educational center of Siberia . Photos by: Slava Stepanov .

Firefly, Unfurled and Grande Orazio take top honours at Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta

The was huge anticipation on the docks this morning as the buzz from the Sunset Party at Phi Beach wore off and the realisation dawned that the final standings in the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta 2014 depended on the final day of racing.

The wind started light, threatening to cut the regatta short, but persistence on the part on the race committee paid off, and by 1400 a course had been announced. The fleet of 19 sailing superyachts taking part in the racing would head on a reach to Monaci, into the bottom of bomb alley, and back round Capo Ferro to the finish in a breeze from the southeast that slowly built as the afternoon wore on.

In Class B, Unfurled played it perfectly, overhauling overnight leader Moonbird by Capo Ferro to secure a win on corrected time. With the Spirit Yachts Gaia and Southern Wind Cape Arrow taking second and third respectively, Unfurled had pulled out a two-point lead to take the overall Class B win.

‘We were almost hoping there was no race today, because we don’t have a lot of confidence in our light air performance,’ said Gary Wiseman, tactician aboard Unfurled . ‘We were pretty sure we’d run the Class for the regatta when we crossed the line. We took a day that we were not feeling confident, but it turned into a really nice race and a really good story for us at the end!’

In Class A, it was another sparkling day on the water for the Claasen Shipyards F Class Firefly , and she scored another win to take not only Class A victory but also the Boat International Media Silver Jubilee Cup overall. ‘We’ve been practicing for three seasons now and we stick together really well,’ beamed her owner. ‘We were very much aiming for our achievements, and I’m delighted not so much for myself but for the team who made it all happen. There’s much more to come! It’s brilliant that it was rewarded with a trophy but there was so much work done before and we’ve been getting better every time. It’s a very warm regatta, and I’ve really enjoyed the hospitality of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, and the organisers Boat International. It’s always lovely to be here and we hope we’ll get to stay here for as long as we can.’

In Class C, the Southern Wind Grande Orazio was pushed into second today by a resurgent My Song with Pier-Luigi Loro Piana at the helm, but had done enough to secure Class C victory as well as top honours in the Southern Wind Trophy. ‘It was four beautiful days, and today was perhaps the best day,’ said her owner, Massimiliano Florio. ‘We had a second place today but we had a match race with other boats which I very much enjoyed, and for me it’s the first time I’ve got a first place overall trophy!’ said her owner, Massimiliano Florio.

Added Pier-Luigi Loro Piana, speaking on behalf of the title sponsor: ‘The level of sailing and the level of the boats was really high this year. We had a great week, good winds, sunshine, we couldn't have asked for more. I'm particularly happy to have seen several new boats racing this year and I hope to see them again both at the Caribbean edition and here in Porto Cervo next year.’

As the sun set over the Piazza Azzurra and the crews prepared their yachts for their next adventures, thoughts turned eagerly to the next edition of the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta, which will take place from 2 to 6 June 2015. Dates have also been announced for the future editions, which will take place in 2016 from 7 to 11 June and in 2017 from 6 to 10 June.
