Equanimity is now Tranquility as yacht owner Genting eyes edge for VIP clients
Advertisement.
KUALA LUMPUR ― The superyacht Equanimity which is best known for being part of the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) financial scandal now has the new identity of Tranquility, according to ship-tracker site Marine Traffic.
According to ship-tracker site Marine Traffic, the yacht's automatic identification system (AIS) reported the ship's name to be Tranquility and said it is now docked at Singapore.
According to the website, the yacht's automatic identification system reported the ship's name to be Tranquility and said it is now docked at Singapore.
Equanmity's new owner Genting Malaysia reportedly said it bought the superyacht in hopes of standing out among its competitors for its premium clients.
“The acquisition of the Equanimity forms part of our strategy to differentiate ourselves from our regional competitors by providing us with a unique and competitive edge for our VIP customers.
“We are in the midst of finalising a business model to allow us to use the Equanimity to grow our premium player business,” it was quoted saying by news portal Malaysiakini.
On April 3, Malaysia's Attorney-General Tommy Thomas announced on behalf of the Malaysian government that Equanimity would be sold at US$126 million (S$171.45 million) to highest bidder Genting Malaysia Berhad or its special purpose vehicle.
The yacht was sold after about five months of being put up for sale, with Mr Thomas saying then that the sale would be the highest sum recovered by the Malaysian government in eights months since action on the 1MDB scandal started.
Investigators said Equanimity was bought by Penang-born fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho with money originating from 1MDB.
The wanted man known as Jho Low reportedly purchased the yacht for close to RM1 billion, and had allegedly used it previously to avoid capture by authorities.
The 300.20ft superyacht interior configuration has been designed to accommodate up to 22 guests overnight in 11 cabins, comprising a master suite, four VIP staterooms, two double cabins and two twin cabins, according to chartering service Yacht Charter Fleet.
According to Mr Thomas, Genting Group owns a shipyard that builds superyachts and operates a luxury yacht chartering division.
Genting Malaysia's website states that it operates leisure and hospitality business including theme parks, gaming, hotels, seaside resorts in Langkawi and Terengganu.
The Genting Group operates casinos in various locations including Malaysia, Singapore, UK and the US. MALAY MAIL

Legal battle over $250 million yacht seized in U.S. fraud probe
March 19, 2018 / 9:25 AM EDT / AP
JAKARTA, Indonesia -- Indonesia's seizure of a luxury yacht wanted as part of a U.S. probe into the alleged multibillion-dollar theft of funds from a Malaysian state investment company is being challenged by the vessel's owner, police said Monday. National police deputy director of economic crimes Daniel Silitonga said police haven't handed the yacht over to the U.S. since its Feb. 28 seizure because they're waiting for a court hearing after lawyers for the owner of the Cayman Islands-registered Equanimity began a legal challenge.
"Until now we are still awaiting the summons for a hearing," he said. "We are facing some legal issues that have to be resolved first."
The Equanimity, worth $250 million, is among assets the U.S. Department of Justice alleges were bought by Malaysian national Jho Low using money stolen from 1MBD, the Malaysian fund, and laundered through Singapore, Switzerland, Luxembourg and the U.S.
Indonesian police seized the 300-foot yacht off Bali in a joint operation with the FBI.
Silitonga said he didn't yet know the basis of the lawsuit.
A spokesman for Low told Malaysian media in early March that "rather than reflecting on the deeply flawed and politically-motivated allegations, the DoJ is continuing with its pattern of global overreach -- all based on entirely unsupported claims of wrongdoing."
The Department of Justic filed a civil case in June seeking recovery of assets worth several hundred million dollars. Overall, it says more than $4.5 billion was stolen between 2009 and 2014 from 1MBD, which was set up by Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak to promote economic development.
Low, an associate of Najib, had no formal role at the fund but considerable influence over it, according to the U.S. court documents.
Equanimity's lavish amenities include a helicopter landing pad, plunge pool, gymnasium and a cinema. It was built in 2014 by Netherlands yacht manufacturer Oceano, which received detailed instructions from Low about its outfitting, according to the civil case documents.
Najib was embroiled in the scandal when it emerged that some $700 million had passed through his personal bank accounts. He denied any wrongdoing and said the money was a political donation from the Saudi royal family, which was later returned.

Malaysia gets court order to sell 1MDB-linked superyacht Equanimity
KUALA LUMPUR (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - The Malaysian government has obtained a court order to sell Equanimity, the US$250 million (S$343 million) superyacht allegedly bought by wanted businessman Low Taek Jho with money stolen from state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
The Admiralty Court in Kuala Lumpur on Friday (Aug 24) granted the application by the Malaysian government, 1MDB and its two subsidiaries 1MDB Energy Holdings and 1MDB Global Investment to sell the vessel.
Mr Ong Chee Kwan, counsel for 1MDB and its two subsidiaries, explained that they were making the application to sell the vessel first before deciding on the next course of action.
Mr Ong said the vessel was a diminishing asset as the cost of maintaining it was very high, and any proceeds from a sale would be reduced the longer it was left unsold.
The ship's owner, Equanimity of Cayman Islands, was the sole defendant in the suit.
The applicants had asked for the sale of the vessel, bunkers, fuel, lubricants and other consumables on board to be conducted through an open tender or private treaty by the sheriff of the Kuala Lumpur Admiralty Court.
The plaintiffs said proceeds from the sale of the Equanimity should be paid to the court and kept in a bank account in Malaysia approved by the Accountant-General.
The superyacht arrived in Malaysia on Aug 7, after being handed over by the Indonesian authorities on Aug 6.
It was first seized in Bali by the Indonesian authorities in February at the request of the United States Department of Justice as part of its multi-billion-dollar corruption probe of 1MDB .
The DOJ has claimed the yacht was part of US$1 billion worth of assets allegedly purchased with funds misappropriated from 1MDB .

Megayacht TRANQUILITY (ex-Equanimity) joins the yacht charter fleet

By Katia Damborsky 20 June 2019
Formerly known as superyacht EQUANIMITY, the 92m/300ft motor yacht TRANQUILITY has become available for private yacht charters.
A superyacht of epic proportions, TRANQUILITY is the latest vessel to join the international charter fleet. She will be spending her debut charter season exploring the glitzy cruising grounds of the Mediterranean .
YachtCharterFleet previously reported that the mammoth megayacht would be ideal as a charter platform.
Delivered by Oceanco in 2013, she was the first yacht to be built to Passenger Yacht Code (PYC) regulation, meaning she can accommodate up to 22 people on board. She is one of the few charter yachts with this capacity, making her the optimum candidate for charters with large groups.
While she will be transporting her guests around Mediterranean hotspots this summer, we can expect to see her chartering her further afield in the future. The expedition yacht boasts an Ice-Class hull that makes her primed for hosting crewed yacht charters in some of the most remote regions on earth.
Wherever she goes, TRANQUILITY will ensure her guests are living in the lap of luxury. Across her five decks, she houses a 20sqm spa pool and a helipad, which serves as an additional lounging area when not in use.
In a fitting testament to her name, her lower deck is home to one of the largest spas ever seen on board a yacht, complete with plunge pools, saunas, experiential showers, Hammans and jacuzzis. It directly connects to a large beach club.
The interiors of the yacht take their cues from signature Asian motifs, with wenge wood, bamboo, marble and gold-leaf contributing to a palatial, yet refined, ambience. A glass elevator runs through the centre of the yacht, encircled by a gleaming white and chrome staircase.
The yacht’s 11 cabins share the same inviting, resort-style feel as the spa, with an emphasis on warmth and comfort balanced by opulent touches. The owner’s suite is particularly enticing, as the space enjoys influxes of light and 180-degree views from panoramic windows and access to a private deck with a dip pool.
The superyacht changed hands earlier this year, after she was launched under the name EQUANIMITY. In a highly-publicized media storm, it was alleged she had been bought with siphoned funds in the 1MDB scandal.
TRANQUILITY will no doubt enjoy a cleaner reputation as she welcomes her first charter guests on board this summer. A fusion of cutting-edge amenities and state-of-the-art on-board features, she is easily one of the most impressive yachts publicly available for charter.
She will be available in Mediterranean hotspots including the South of France and Italy this summer, and is expected to head to the tropical cruising grounds of the Caribbean this winter.
Her charter rates begin at €1.1 million per week.
She ranks in the World’s Top 100 Superyachts, sharing spot 65 with Neorion’s superyacht ‘Queen Miri’ .
If you would like to learn more about chartering M/Y TRANQUILITY, please reach out to your preferred yacht charter broker .
