Immediately after the Big Rock tournament in Morehead City, North Carolina, I was able to catch up with the latest build from Ricky Scarborough Jr.—Hull No. 14, Triple S . The walk from Big Rock Landing to the city marina was a short but pleasant stroll through fishing history. I was greeted by owner-operator Todd Smith and mates Travis Morrison and Calib Michelini. Smith is a North Carolina local who was quick with a firm handshake and welcoming smile as he happily prepared to walk me through every inch of this fully custom 72-foot build.

Coming out of a great production boat, Smith decided to give Scarborough a shot back in 2019 and started the build shortly thereafter. After some pandemic-related delays, he finally took delivery in early 2023. I had been reviewing the build’s highlight sheet on the flight up from South Florida and was excited to check her out.

Cockpit and Bridge

Stepping into the cockpit, you can tell that this boat is built to chase big gamefish anywhere, anytime. If you need it, she has it: plenty of deck space, a Release Marine Trillion fighting chair, freezer space in the step, a convertible livewell/fish box in the transom, hydraulic outriggers, in-deck livewell fittings, and a 1,000-pound Dometic ice chipper.

Triple S sports mezzanine air-conditioning, cooling drink holders, a double four-burner grill positioned on top of the tackle station, and a cockpit shower that features both hot and cold water. The tackle center also features custom inserts for keeping all your tools right where they belong. The teak-decking seams are finished in white, which creates a nice departure from the usual, and is an accent of which I have been seeing more and more.

Heading up the ladder to the flybridge and the custom Palm Beach Towers structure, you see Scarborough’s trademark logo engraved into each step. The helm resembles a command center, and as owner-operator, Smith knew exactly what he wanted at his fingertips. He elected to go with three massive 24-inch Garmin displays. Garmin and Furuno radars and a Furuno Omni sonar are paired with those displays. A Simrad autopilot and a Furuno NavNet black-box unit can run both the Garmin and Furuno chart plotters. When looking backward, a custom-mounted 10-inch Garmin display drops out of the overhead teaser-reel box into perfect view of the helmsman.

Forward of the helm is a custom-molded armchair for Triple S ’s primary angler and Smith’s wife, Shelley. The queen’s chair features two air-conditioning vents and chilled drink holders in each arm. After this review, we might see a few more of these custom bridge layouts on the drawing board.

To port, there is an additional lounge chair with enormous freezer space underneath fitted with custom dividers, which easily has enough space to store bait for an entire season.

Salon and Accommodations

Entering the salon is like walking into a designer’s showroom. The best of the best is on display here, but the highlight is the massive island that features a beautiful Brazilian Amazonite granite countertop with shades of greens, grays, whites and gunmetal. Mounted under one side of the island are six Sub-Zero refrigerators/freezers, with Release Dubliner bar stools on the other. Smith explained that he didn’t need a formal dinette because everyone always stood around and socialized while eating, so keeping that in mind, he opted for the oversize island. And where the dinette typically would be, he designed a custom bar with a hideaway pop-up drinkware holder and custom bottle storage, a drink chiller, and a Hoshizaki ice machine.

The galley features top-of-the-line Wolf appliances and a glam mirrored backsplash of subway tiles. Aft in the salon sits a white L-shaped sofa, with a funky yet beautiful day head. The day head features a custom wash basin with starfish accents and an indestructible penny-round-tiled floor.

Arrangements of tackle in the storage units of the Scarborough Boatworks 72.

Forward of the salon, a custom electronics room is found on the starboard side, and a full-size pantry is to port, all with beautiful high-gloss finishes and Carpathian burl accents in the companionway.

The accommodations are set up in a four-cabin arrangement, with a VIP on the port side with a queen-size bed and a private head; a double-bunk cabin and a double captain’s quarters are separated by a Jack-and-Jill head with a recessed hammered-copper sink to starboard. The heads feature the same granite countertops as the galley.

The master is arranged forward and features a custom oversize queen bed, custom storage throughout, a large frameless TV, and a private head. Arguably, the star of the show would be the custom tackle room built by Paul Bright, which is located just aft of the master and houses a full arsenal of gear. Terminal-tackle storage resides here as well and includes a rigging table with a removable padded workstation. Any angler can sit in this room and just stare in awe. A short clip I posted of it on social media already has nearly 1 million views, and unlike most topics online, we all agree here that the wow factor is at an all-time high.

The clean engine room of the Scarborough Boatworks 72.

Engine Room and Performance

The engine room features twin Caterpillar C32Bs at 2,400 hp per side, as well as twin 27 kW Caterpillar generators, all accented by a mirror-polished stainless-steel overhead, which makes the 6-plus-foot-high space look larger, but it also allows you to visually inspect the tops of the engines.

Moving forward, a dedicated pump room was organized and air-conditioned, and contained a custom freshwater recirculating cooling system for all of the pump components to eliminate raw-water cooling from the equation. Twin FCI watermakers, the chiller system, and an ElectroSea Clearline system are also present, and aft of the engine room sat the Seakeeper 26 and ice chipper.

Running out the Beaufort Inlet, Smith put all 4,800 ponies in gear. The Scarborough 72, paired with CJR running gear, quickly got up and raced to the east with all six turbos spooled up. At 2,050 rpm, we saw a fast cruising speed of 38 knots with a 90 percent load burning 110 gph per side. As we dropped back to an economical cruise, we saw 32 knots at 1,750 rpm with an 80 percent load burning 80 gph per side. Dropping the hammers to wide-open throttle (2,230 rpm), Triple S rocketed close to 44 knots and burned 127 gph per side.

Smith then put the 72-footer through her paces, backing around in all directions and spinning the boat hard on a dime. If Smith asked for it, the boat gave it to him with what felt like a smile.

After the sea trial, I got to kick back and speak with Smith about his plans, which consist of a busy travel schedule of tournaments and fun fishing. When I asked him, “What’s next?” he quickly responded with his own smile. Another Scarborough, no doubt, and what will most certainly be another head-turner.

  • This New 72-Foot Yacht’s New Hybrid Propulsion System Is the First of Its Kind

Azimut worked with Volvo Penta on its Seadeck 7 to develop a hybrid system for Volvo's feature-rich IPS propulsion system.

Azimut Yachts Seadeck 7

Two marine industry leaders announced what could be a propulsion revolution in yachting—a serial-hybrid propulsion system mated to some of the coolest tech on the water.

Volvo Penta IPS Hybrid System for Azimut Seadeck 7.

Volvo Penta has been working toward this moment—a warrantied stem-to-stern hybrid system that works with all the features of its IPS system—for years. Robb Report saw the first iteration of the system two years ago on a tourist boat in Svalbard, Norway.

“This was the first release of a heavy-duty version of the hybrid built around D13 engines,” Johan Inden, president of Volvo Penta Marine, tells Robb Report , adding that it had built a prototype of the Seadeck 7 two years ago to test the engines.

The hybrid IPS system hits a sweet spot in the yachting sector, mostly because of the large number of builders offering boats from 65 to 100 feet. “This is the world’s first hybrid system that coordinates with our IPS system, allowing users to operate joystick driving and docking, low speed handling, dynamic positioning, and assisted docking in both pure electric and hybrid modes,” says Inden.

Azimut Seadeck 7 Fundeck at stern.

The Seadeck 7 is a big departure for Azimut. Missing are the conventional luxuries that define most of the Italian brand’s other models. In its place is an eco-friendly package, its hull optimized for maximum efficiency in both planing and displacement modes, while carbon fiber has been used in 40 percent of the vessel to remove weight. With the new hybrid propulsion, says Azimut, the Seadeck 7 emits up to 40 percent less carbon dioxide than similar-sized vessels.

Azimut Seadeck7 Interior

Beyond the eco-credentials, the Seadeck 7 has cool features such as the planing hull that reaches 40 knots and an exterior that Azimut calls “Fun Island,” because of its proximity to the water, connection to the interior via large glass doors, and fold-down side platforms.

The series also includes the Seadeck 6 , which is 57’5” in length, and an upcoming Seadeck 9, which is 83’9”. Both the Seadeck 6 and Seadeck 7 will be on display this week at Cannes, but buyers who want the Seadeck 7 will have to wait until late 2025 when the first units ship.

Triple Seven superyacht running

Triple Seven: The yacht that symbolises success and satisfaction

The story of the 67.7 metre motor yacht Triple Seven , built by Nobiskrug Shipyard in Rendsburg, Germany, began in unlikely fashion at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show in 2002 when yacht designers and naval architects Frank E H Neubelt and Roland Krüger of Newcruise-Yacht Project+Design had a chance meeting in a café with a couple who were looking to build a new custom yacht.

The new yacht, of between 60 and 70 metres, was to have flowing lines and an elegant yet distinctive appearance that should lean more to the conservatism of Limitless than the elevated grandeur of Lady Moura . At the same time the owner suggested that the exterior design might incorporate some of the spirit embodied in Formula 1 race cars, while the interior design should be contemporary with touches of classicism and also have a very individual character – a style that should impart the feel of holidays, rather than over-rich and stuffy formality. The clients were outdoor people, and the importance of sizeable and varied deck spaces was emphasised, as was the fact that the interior should be closely linked to the exterior with large windows that would promote a close affinity with the yacht’s surroundings.

Four years later, build number 777, which in Germany is seen as a ‘lucky’ combination, emerged from her building shed with her build number adopted as her registered name.

Her attractively sleek and low profile, with its high, seaworthy bow and stylish stern incorporating a large bathing platform/dock, topped by a highly styled, curvaceous superstructure with large, well-thought-out deck spaces, gives her an appearance that has certainly turned heads. The Formula 1 connection is immediately seen in the two forward-facing air intakes that grace the extremities of the arch mast spanning the sundeck.

Triple Seven’s deck layout certainly fulfils the design brief, but its real success is in offering such a wide variety of spaces that there will almost always be somewhere for owners or guests to do exactly what they want – either in the company of others or in solitude. All this has been achieved with elegance and practicality, without compromising the crew ability to run the ship.

In most respects Triple Seven follows the standard arrangement found in a modern yacht of this size – skylounge on the bridge deck, main saloon, dining room and master suite on the main deck and the guest accommodation positioned midships on the lower deck, with engine room and tender garages aft and crew accommodation and services forward.

But the interior itself is emphatically not a standard one. Whatever your taste in interior design, you cannot fail to be impressed by the atmosphere created in the yacht by its highly talented designers. Falling within a narrow colour band, all the components of the interior are illuminated by light that pours in through huge windows while, by night, carefully placed downlighters and cornice lighting create a delightful atmosphere. Pale maple and sycamore wood with a variety of grain is contrasted here and there with darker items of furniture made from bleached wengé, all of which combines well with white walls, teak Venetian blinds and floors from the same material, partially covered by white carpet.

The angular, almost cubist, design style, softened by recognisable touches of art deco can best be described as ‘modern classic, verging on the minimalist’, yet at the same time it is comfortable and luxurious. Here and there are displays of more ‘7’ symbolism, particularly in the shape of the cornice, which throughout the yacht creates the clear image of the number on external corners. The combination of all these elements is perhaps best seen in the main deck saloon, which also offers a sense of huge volume, long sightlines and the clean, cool, uncluttered feel that is found throughout the yacht.

Forward on the main deck, the master cabin is adjoined, in normal fashion, by a private study which opens through a cunningly concealed door in to the bedroom, but, unusually, the suite’s main entrance from the lobby by-passes this, to enter the bedroom directly. The privacy of the master bedroom is taken care of by a curved screen at the foot of the bed, which blocks the direct view into the room from the suite’s main entrance. This curved screen matches a similar backdrop to the bed, creating a central circular space that encloses the bed, above which the deckhead rises in concentric tiers to a height of almost 2.5 metres.

Further doors open inwards from the dressing rooms to the centrally positioned bathroom that, stylishly lined with white Thassos marble, offers a pair of head and bidet compartments, double wash basins of hammered nickel, a shower compartment with steam option, and a two-person bath overlooked by a novel ‘zen garden’ set in an alcove which, in reality, is a well camouflaged emergency escape.

In the lower deck area of the stern, Triple Seven’s designers and naval architects have created an informally decorated ‘beach club’, with a lounge, bar and gymnasium and direct access to a bathing platform that is easily large enough to accommodate a couple of sunloungers without blocking all other uses. This is a great daytime hang-out, especially for younger watersports-oriented guests who will enjoy the serious hi-fi and large screen television. Conveniently, two stairways rise from the bathing platform to the aft deck where there are further rest and refreshment facilities.

Another plus for Triple Seven is her excellent technical areas and crew facilities. The engine room in particular is of the highest standards: extremely spacious and beautifully constructed, with every element easily accessible in a multitude of well-arranged, purpose-oriented compartments. Attention to detail is seen everywhere, particularly in the electrical wiring and the pipework, where every valve is clearly labelled and the flow direction clearly marked. This same dedication extends to the bridge – a solidly functional area in which reliability is prized over novelty.

Triple Seven is a yacht that tangibly embodies the passion, dedication and thought that went into her design and build, and has gone on to fulfil the success and satisfaction that her name portended from the start.

Hollywood A-lister Tom Cruise’s luxury superyacht has been continuing its trip around Cornwall by making its way up the north coast over the weekend.

CornwallLive reported last week how Mission Impossible star and Hollywood legend Cruise was reportedly spotted on a huge luxurious superyacht off the Cornish coast on Wednesday - with rumours he has travelled across the pond to work on a film with Simon Pegg.

Photos emerged of 'Triple Seven' - a huge luxurious superyacht - in Mevagissey Bay, and there are reports that Tom Cruise exited the vessel, before being "whisked away" in a black Mercedes.

The impressive yacht - which has an asking price of around €38,000,000 - has a whole host of impressive features including a water slide, wake board, knee board, fishing equipment, kite surfers, surf-skis, jet skis, stand-up paddleboards, and an inflatable water park - amongst other things.

Pictures then circulated of a man with a striking resemblance to 59-year-old getting off a boat in St Ives harbour, however it has not been confirmed if it was Cruise or a lookalike.

After leaving Mevagissey the Triple Seven made its way to Penzance .

It then continued its journey along the coast, stopping at Newquay Bay where local photographer Clare James photographed it in all its glory.

She said: “I am a professional photographer based in Newquay, this morning (Satuday) I cycled down Little Fistral for my swim and managed to snap a few shots of Tom Cruise’s super yacht in Newquay Bay with Watergate in the background.

“It was pretty impressive but did look a bit out of place.”

The yacht has since moved on again and been spotted around Padstow on Sunday.
