The German yacht builder Lürssen has earned an international reputation as the specialist in exclusive, bespoke yachts of outstanding engineering mastery.
The privately run company was founded in 1875 and remains solely in the hands of the fourth generation of the Lürssen family. Innovation has always been one of the most important driving forces in the company’s history. In 1886 Lürssen built the first motorboat of the world together with Gottlieb Daimler.
It is, therefore, not surprising that Lürssen is now also building the first Lürssen yacht with fuel cell technology for a pioneering and technology driven client. The fuel cell flanks the conventional generators and represents a giant step towards launching an emission free Lürssen yacht. This innovative technology makes it possible to anchor emission-free for 15 days or cruise 1000 miles at slow speed.
Lürssen remains very discreet when it comes to yachts under construction or its clients. To promote the sustainable technology of the future, Lürssen has developed an innovative, climate-neutral yacht model called Alice, which shows what a Lürssen yacht could look like in the future. ALICE is an emergence into a new era. Right now she remains a model, but one that paves the way. ALICE is a fraction of reality in movement.
ALICE is climate-neutral. An emission-free fuel cells generates electrical energy based on hydrogen reformed from green methanol. The fuel cell replaces the conventional diesel generators on board. For higher speed and energy demands, an additional methanol engine is added.
Energy saving technologies, such as waste heat recovery utilisations, recover heat emissions for use within the HVAC system, for both heating and cooling-purposes. This is complemented by mirrored glass windows around the owner’s deck where reflecting the heat serves for thermal insulation and reduces energy load of the air conditioning systems.
Lürssen has always been driving developments in the field of yachting. When it comes to climate protection and treating our environment responsibly, Lürssen serves as a role model. With their knowhow and capacity for innovation, Lürssen does everything to preserve our planet for future generations. Sustainable Yachting clearly makes the difference.
ALICE makes the difference.

123m Lürssen superyacht Golden Odyssey joins market for Monaco Yacht Show
The 123.2-metre Lürssen superyacht Golden Odyssey is newly listed for sale at the Monaco Yacht Show with Burgess and Edmiston .
Designed by Martin Francis and built of steel and aluminium by Lürssen, her vast interior was designed by the late Alberto Pinto . Francis kept her exterior proportions elegant despite the massive 7,600GT of volume.
Golden Odyssey accommodates a party of up to 30 guests across 15 cabins, served by a crew and staff of up to 70. Her beam is 20 metres. A private owner's deck is a particular highlight and includes two master suites, a spa, wellness area with steam room, Hammam, treatment room and a private terrace with Jacuzzi.
Stepping on board, guests can expect two grand, sweeping staircases aft which lead to the main deck, where a spacious beach club platform awaits. The upper deck serves as a "relaxation hub" with its large pool and numerous loungers. Meanwhile, up top, the sun deck offers lounging spaces, al fresco dining and a fully equipped gym.
Powered by twin MTU diesel-electric engines and four V16 MTUs, Golden Odyssey cruises comfortably at 15 knots, with a top speed of 20 knots and a range of 9,000 nautical miles.
According to BOATPro data, the yacht for sale was previously sold in October 2022 at a price of €150,000,000 and she underwent refit works, most recently in 2023.
On display at Monaco Yacht Show, Golden Odyssey's price is upon application.

German shipyard Lürssen has announced that it is building its first luxury yacht with fuel cell technology for a ‘pioneering and technology-driven client’, and while the construction is being kept as secret and secure as all other Lürssen builds, the shipyard has released a new yacht concept ALICE, going beyond the energy-efficient technology of today to imagine what a future Lürssen luxury yacht could look like.
Superyacht project ALICE by Lurssen
The natural world comes aboard with the ponds and park-like surroundings designed for the foredeck, while the interior is composed of living walls that create its own ecosystem, scenting the air with fresh and natural fragrance. The traditional teak decking is replaced by fast-growing, organically farmed wood that meets the same high-quality standards for performance and finish that Lürssen clients always expect.

M/Y ALICE is more than just about appearances: Her engineering results in carbon neutrality by using emission-free fuel cells that generate electrical energy through hydrogen reformed from green methanol. These fuel cells replace conventional diesel generators and when a higher speed of greater energy is required, an additional methanol engine comes into play.
Night time looking forward
This will be a significant evolution on the current technology, which has come on leaps and bounds when compared to just a decade ago. The fuel cell technology of the first Lürssen luxury yacht will make it possible to anchor emission-free for 15 days or cruise 1,000 nautical miles at an economical speed.

For superyacht ALICE, on-board energy efficiency is just as vital as environmental sustainability, and to achieve this end waste heat is recovered using the HVAC system and reused for heating and cooling purposes. Mirrored glass windows surrounding the Owner’s deck also serve this purpose, providing thermal insulation and reducing reliance on the air conditioning systems.

The model for superyacht concept ALICE will be available to view throughout 2022 at the Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg, home to the world’s largest model railway and one of the most popular attractions in Europe.

Who says yachts can’t inspire childlike wonder?
Not Lürssen , which is showing off a whimsical new superyacht concept dubbed Alice at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show. As the moniker suggests, the emission-free vessel is heavily inspired by Lewis Carroll’s 1965 fantasy classic, Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland .
Measuring 322 feet, the Alice will feature five fantastical decks. But in a twist right out of Carroll’s book, a main deck won’t be one of them. In a YouTube video previewing the concept , the German shipyard’s designer Jim Robert Sluijter said that the idea for this came from talking to yacht owners, many of whom said they didn’t get much use out of their boat’s main salon. So, he decided to get rid of it and try something completely different.

Instead, everything a main deck would normally provide—dining, entertaining or lounging around a fire pit—has been shifted to the smaller upper decks (the top of which also has a helipad). Because of this, a wide-open exterior deck which stretches from one end of the boat to the other can be used for whatever its owner desires. In Sluijter’s model, this means there’s a paddle tennis court in the rear, a semi-enclosed bar and dance floor in the middle beneath the elevated decks and, most impressively of all, a soothing nature park filled with greenery and its own pond in front.
The main deck isn’t the only convention Lürssen has dispatched, either. There will also be no diesel engines used to propel the boat. Instead Alice will use emission-free fuel cell technology to power its engines. Its tenders and water toys will be fully electric as well.

Of course, for now Alice is still just a concept so there’s no guarantee it’ll end up being built. Still, those who appreciate both eco-friendly yachting and a pronounced sense of whimsy can dream. In the meantime, you can view a scale model of the ship at this year Monaco Yacht Show, which runs through Saturday, at booth JS8.

The 85-metre yacht EYE is geared towards family life. The onboard experience is centred around the upper deck as the main social gathering space, with circulation intelligently designed to facilitate smooth service while preserving the privacy of owner and guests. Winch Design also gave EYE a very unusual profile: the two "eyes" are both a design feature as well as a sheltered balcony. The interior, also by Winch Design, is a glamorous escape with no compromise. EYE is a truly bespoke yacht that defies design convention and symbolises engineering excellence.

Why Lürssen's ‘Alice’ is more than a concept
We speak to jim sluijter, lead exterior designer at lürssen, about ‘alice’ and the need for ‘conceptual concepts' ….
Before ‘Alice’, Lürssen hadn’t released a superyacht concept for over a decade, and they never had any intention of creating one either. The idea blossomed through organic and somewhat comical circumstances. When Lürssens head of marketing and communication learned that ‘Miniatur Wunderland’, a tourist attraction showcasing small scale models, were going to build a miniature model of Monaco, a lightbulb flickered on. Lürssen decided to contact the people at Miniatur Wunderland and tell them they would build them a mini superyacht for mini Monaco.
Jim Sluijter, the lead exterior designer at Lürssen, was given the brief - ‘Design a superyacht for Monaco harbour that will be so outrageous every tourist in wunderland will want to take a photo of it’. It needed to have the perfect balance of wow factor and realism. And it also needed to be as sustainable as possible.
Sluijter ended up designing a 98 metre methanol powered motor yacht with a raised superstructure, no saloon, a winding river pool and a tennis court. To be honest, it does sound slightly ridiculous, however, Sluijter argues that it is well within the realm of possibilities. Although he didn't have to, he even went as far as to design all the interior cabin spaces and crew areas, just to prove to himself it was feasible. He wanted to make sure the design acted as a statement to the rest of the market, showcasing what Lürssen are all about.
In a way, Alice is Lürssens way of dictating their future narrative, and providing a beacon of reason and inspiration in a chaotic media landscape. In recent years publications operating in the luxury asset industry have caught on to the fact that people absolutely love concept superyachts. Which has ultimately led to ridiculous and outlandish superyacht concepts becoming classic clickbait material. It’s something of a pet peeve for designers, as Sluijter reveals,
“I have a little WhatsApp group with some other designers. Every time some crazy concept gets posted online we share it in the chat and we all get really frustrated. We're like, Oh, look at this guy. That's not even remotely possible.”
Sluijter continues, “These crazy concepts that these aspiring designers publish, their intention is probably to get their name out there and get some exposure, right? And then the media, they publish it because they want to get more clicks and likes.” Unfortunately though, most concepts are tarnished with the same brush by the media. And despite all the work that goes into the project, that’s not usually what gets reported on, instead it is more likely to be lumped together in a ‘listicle’ headlined ‘craziest future superyacht concepts’.
The concept becomes even more impressive when the designer takes you through the process. If you look along the hull, you’ll notice that Alice retains tradition by having the same classic Lürssen lines that Jon Bannenberg used for ‘Limitless’ and ‘Rising Sun’ almost twenty years ago. While the floating superstructure takes inspiration from the iconic Marina Bay Sands skyscraper in Singapore, the idea for the superstructure also came about because Sluijter acknowledged the fact that owners love to sit outside, but they don’t like to sit in the sun. So with this design, the deck space is extended and optimised, while the superstructure acts as a natural shade. Sluijter decided not to add a saloon because he knew that many owners hardly ever use that area. “That was mainly just from talking to clients and getting their opinions and ideas. It’s also just from experience. We've done questionnaires with clients and stuff like that but it feels like that's the general impression.”
Much of the design is driven by a sense of ecological responsibility. Lürssen wanted to transform the deck space by introducing the idea of parks and ponds onboard. They even imagined the teak being replaced by fast-growing and lightweight organically farmed wood. Alice has the full intention of being climate-neutral with emission-free fuel cells generating electrical energy based on hydrogen reformed from green methanol. The fuel cell replaces the conventional diesel generators on board. For higher speed and energy demands, an additional methanol engine is added. Other energy saving technologies include waste heat recovery utilisations, recovering heat emissions for use within the HVAC system, for both heating and cooling-purposes. This is complemented by mirrored glass windows around the owner’s deck where reflecting the heat serves for thermal insulation and reduces energy load of the air conditioning systems.
The level of thought and detail that has gone into Alice really is unique, and Sluijter believes that detail is what makes concepts and future thinking projects truly valuable, “All of the technology and engineering on Alice has been really thought through.” Sluijter explains, “But there's a lot of concepts out there that just have a press release that says, fuel cells, length, gross tonnage, but you know that it's just a designer who’s drawn something and rendered it. But there's nothing behind it. And still, journalists will create an article with all of this loose information that is based on nothing.”
Sluijter added, “With other designers or shipyards, for them, a concept might be something that they do every year. So whatever they do next year, the concept that they did this year is already in the past. But Alice will be there and it will be in Miniatur Wunderland for the next 15 years for people to look at. So it has to be something that is really for the future because it's going to be there for the next 15 years or 20 years for people to look at.”
Despite the frustration with clickbait concepts, it feels harsh to punish the responsible designer who has taken the initiative to put a concept together and try and get his or her name out. But on the other hand it's up to the media to have better judgement and decide what is worthy of publication. Sluijter revealed that it does have an adverse affect on business,
“Sometimes potential clients will see clickbait circulating in the media and they will ask us if a design feature is possible, and when we say no, that’s obviously not an ideal situation. I guess that shows that the industry needs to educate more and the media need to be more selective.”
Sluijter also pointed out that perhaps yacht design could be more like architecture, where people can become accredited and approved yacht designers, rather than just being anyone who can draw. An independent label of sorts that acknowledged a certain level of know-how or experience would mean only certain people are allowed to call themselves yacht designers.
Despite all the gripes and frustrations, it is incredibly refreshing to see a young designer at a major shipyard address a real problem with the industry. What would make Alice even more successful, would be if it inspired other shipyards to do the same. Alice is not just a piece of advertising or marketing. It’s Lürssen transcending the real world (and the Miniatur Wunderland world) with something that shows the rest of the market just how good they really are.
