19 Feet 1969 Chris Craft Lancer

This boat is in very good original condition. I bought it this summer from original owner. It has been boathouse kept it's whole life. Scruffy paint job but no cracks, spider or otherwise anywhere on boat. Runs good but the outdrive won't go up and down all the time.

22 Feet 1986 century

Finally… I am humbly bringing to market what I firmly believe to be the finest fiberglass Coronado on the planet! Improved from OEM in every way I can think of. 1986… last year for the “purist” boats from Manistee. This is a brand-new boat, sort of. I started with an all-original lake boat (original owner) that spent its life in a boat house. 700 original hours. I threw everything away except for the hull, deck, windshield frame, fuel tank and miscellaneous trim. All structure out, foam out, etc. pics will tell the story. It will take several posts as I think I am limited to 80 pics per post. I will try to cluster them intelligently. Countless customizations… stringers and bulkheads nothing like original… and mine are glassed! No nailed 2 x 10s!!! Sloped stringers for engine mounts… no spacers! All kinds of seat storage due to seat design without floor. Incredible ventilation to keep the bilge clean and dry with plenty of air to engine. No foam!!! 2 blowers. Note chrome scoop on bow and stern scoops. Don’t belong on 1986 boats! See ventilation hose pics under bow. 2 battery boat (house and starting) with electrical design worthy of a much bigger, more complicated boat. Wiring is incredible… Built in battery charger with ACR. 6 speakers with subwoofer (7 total) with big amp and Bluetooth head unit. Serious spotlight and horn (not the junky original kind). The gauges speak for themselves. Notice the arch to the shape of the dashboard to match the windshield? All custom. See pics. Excellent high speed depth finder and GPS speedo. Push button start. Brand new (not rebuilt) Marine Power 420 HP aluminum 6.2 liter L87 with two year transferable warranty. Factory reman Velvet Drive. Tuning and prop selection hours only. Amazing engine. Sips gas. Entire deck covered in vinyl, not the silly gelcoat imprint. All through hulls (except for raw water pick up) moved to transom where they belong. Extra vent is for potti. Fuel fill moved to centerline where it belongs. Custom upholstery, obviously. That is a pump out potti under the back seat. That is a custom fold out sun pad suitable for someone 7 ft long. Hull finished in Imron with clear coat. Custom swim platform with ladder underneath… where it belongs! Underwater lights. All running gear and all trim freshly rechromed. Trailer brand new a couple years ago and spent most time in storage while boat was finished. Maybe 500 miles on it. Disk brakes both axles. Oversized capacity for boat… I have receipts for MATERIALS well over 60k (wholesale pricing, mostly). On top of that, about 3,500 hours, which you get for free. Best offer buys it. It is truly like no other Coronado you will ever find. The pictures tell the story to a point. I can fill in the blanks over the phone. The boat is located in Naples, Florida. Ready to go. Close to 55 mph... maybe more! Stunning. Take it to the Century Roundup!!! Text first 239.963.5003 8 am to 8 pm. Here's the "finished product" post, to start. Constuction posts to follow. Thanks for looking!!!!!!

23 Feet 1980 Glastron Carlson Scimitar (CXT-23)

Inspired by a sketch that performance-boat guru Art Carlsons son made, the Scimitar was designed to resemble a water-borne Corvette, complete with its long, curving nose, and see-thru T-Tops. Art saw his sons original sketch, and immediately set out to design and build it. That was the birth of the Scimitar, and more than 35 years later, there is still nothing on the water like it! This boat is still in, very good semi-original condition. Modifications include a more modern paint scheme, but with the original Emerald Mist metal flake still running along the centerline of the boat. The interior upholstery also has been changed, with additional panels added. Thru-hull exhaust pipes were added, as well. There are some minor surface blemishes in the paint and gel coat which are visible when standing very close, but overall, this is a really nice example of this rare boat model. It seats five adults comfortably, with two front bucket seats, and a three-person bench seat behind. The upholstered engine cover makes a great sun lounge.

17 Feet 1970 Century MKII

This version of the MKII is is kept and enjoyed around Grand Island, New York. She was left outside for 20 years before the current owner purchased the boat. Though the hull paint and cartoon on the transom were original, the overall condition was quite poor. The engine was seized, and racoons had eaten the interior. The entire restoration took 4 years to complete. Wheelhouse Marine and Fiberglass Specialities restored the hull, while Casullo's marine Upholstery and Gulflite Marine Canvas completed the seating. Jasper gave the MKII's original 318cid Chrysler V8 a proper remanufacturing. The restoration was an enjoyable experience and the boat now sits on display at Wheelhouse Marine. It is put in the water one time per year during our antique boat show. A brand new Venture trailer was purchased for the boat in 2020.

18’ Feet 1973 Sidewinder Marine

16 ft Feet 1960 Buehler Turbocraft

I finished the 13-year restoration of my1960 Buehler Turbocraft Jet 32, 16 ft Jet Boat in July 2022. I had undertaken the task of restoring this hull using modern materials and power. The goal was to maintain as much visual originality as possible with select upgrades. In 2010, I started out gang busters gutting the hull and laying the groundwork to reinforce the hull with 24/10 fiberglass cloth and West’s epoxy. The boat is built entirely of Corecell below the floor (stringers, bulkheads, transom) and ¾” marine plywood encased in epoxy and cloth for the floor. This project continued for 13 years as time, money and energy dictated. I got very serious in 2019 with the goal of finishing by the 2022 Boat Show Season. Original chrome was replated, aluminum and SS brightwork was rejuvenated. Original seat patterns were copied and color matched as close as possible, and the paint color replicated using one part polyurethane paint. The engine is a 1995 Ford 351W Marine engine removed from a very low hour pristine boat that was damaged. I installed SS impellers in the original Indiana Gear Works 3 stage pump housing during the complete rebuild. The gate assembly was powder coated white and the hydraulic cylinder rebuilt. A modern hydraulic pump is used to move the shift gate. I made the boat wire looms for the boat also. Many more details you’d have to talk to me about or see. Boat sits on a new Load Rite Aluminum I Beam trailer. You also get all the spare parts I have from salvaging 3 Buehlers. A must-see Award Winner. Since completion: Best Craftsmanship by Owner at Finger Lakes Chapter ACBS 2022; Best Non-Wood at Adirondack Chapter ACBS in Lake George 2022 and 1st Place Fiberglass Classic Runabout at the 47th Annual Portage Lakes Antique & Classic Boat Show 2023. I have decided to sell this boat as I have 6 other Classic boats and I feel this is the one I will use the least. Anyone that has restored a boat knows how expensive it is. I am giving up thousands of dollars in hard cash and the freebie is all my labor. The only thing I paid to have someone else do is the paint and upholstery. I did the rest of the restoration. Tough to let go but this boat needs to be seen and used. I have extensive pictures of the restoration for a serious buyer.

17 Feet 1964 Glastron Sportsman

Great riding 1964 Glastron Sportsman v-171.

19 Feet 1988 Century Arabian

My dad owned this boat and I grew up on Lake Winnipesaukee with it. It has never been out of our family. It hadn't been used in several years and I decided to surprise him by having the boat renovated, with hopes my own kids would learn to drive it as well with their grandfather. Unique Boat Restoration in Moultonborough, NH redid the entire inside of the boat, from the stringers to seating, upholstery, rugs, stereo, etc. Lakeport Landing Marina in Laconia, NH went through the entire engine and also replaced the entire throttle system (to make it a little easier for the kids). There is also a new cover, the battery was replaced, etc. and we still have the original American flag and Century flag with the wooden posts. The outside is in good condition, but I did not have it repainted (one larger scratch). My kids have not taken to the boat (they now have a 2022 Whaler) and my dad at almost 80 hasn't spent much time on it either. Rather than it sitting in storage at the marina (we run it every year regardless), we would like for a second family to enjoy it and have decided to part ways.

The boat comes with full cover.

16 Ft Feet 1957 Crosby

Crosby Capri is a three deck front cockpit steering fiberglass runabout manufactured by Crosby Aeromarine of Grabill, Indiana. This company was one of the early pioneers in the use of this new and controversial construction material. At the time, this synthetic (fiberglass) was relatively new and untested, although fiberglass boat models had made their appearance as early as 1950. Widespread acceptance by the boating community was not gained, however until the mid 1950s when companies began to standardize construction methods. At issue were weight and flotation. While fiberglass was strong, it was also very heavy when layered to achieve the required level of strength. Further, it would not float when swamped so sealed air chambers had to be designed into the hull and/or styrofoam blocks fastened to the seat bottoms as an early solution. In fact this late 1957 model sports a 3 cubic foot air chamber under the front deck which added 200 lbs of additional buoyancy. The wood interior of the Crosby also aided in providing additional flotation through the 1957 model year. A fiberglass interior appeared in 1958 and later models. What set Crosby apart from its competitors was the incorporation of strips of balsa wood laminated between two fiberglass floor layers. The 2 cubic feet of balsa cut into 1 inch square by 6 ft strips added a conservative 105 lbs of additional buoyancy which was twice a buoyant as cork. Additionally the could bend to conform to hull contours, and had great shock absorbing and sound deadening properties. Abner Crosby, the company's founder sold out to Archer-Daniels-Midland in 1958 and went on to found the Hydrodyne Boat Company which produced similar boats. In fact, his quality reputation caused most of the original Mercury 7 astronauts to choose his boats for their personal use. Also, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy ordered a Hydrodyne in 1963 for her family to use in their Cape Cod summer home.

A Look at 1960s Fiberglass Boats: Cruising Through History

The 1960s were a golden age for boating, and a major contributor to this boom was the innovation of fiberglass. Replacing traditional wooden boats, fiberglass offered a lighter, more affordable, and lower-maintenance alternative. This ushered in a new era of sleek designs, high performance, and a growing fascination with leisure boating. Let’s dive into the world of 1960s fiberglass boats, exploring their history, iconic styles, and the enduring legacy they’ve left behind.

A Material Revolution: The Rise of Fiberglass

Prior to the 1950s, most boats were crafted from wood. While beautiful and classic, wooden boats required constant upkeep – battling against rot, leaks, and the ever-present threat of termites. Fiberglass, a composite material of woven glass fibers and resin, offered a game-changer. Here’s why fiberglass became the boating material of choice in the 1960s:

  • Durability: Fiberglass is incredibly strong and resistant to rot, corrosion, and cracking, making it ideal for withstanding saltwater environments.
  • Lightweight: Compared to wood, fiberglass boats were significantly lighter, translating to better fuel efficiency and higher performance.
  • Low Maintenance: Unlike wood, fiberglass required minimal upkeep, freeing up boat owners’ time and resources.
  • Design Flexibility: Fiberglass allowed for more creative and aerodynamic boat designs, paving the way for a new era of style.

The Rise of Boating Culture: From Runabouts to Cruisers

With the affordability and ease of use offered by fiberglass, boating became accessible to a wider audience. The 1960s saw a surge in recreational boating, with families and pleasure seekers taking to the water in various fiberglass boat styles:

  • Runabouts: These sporty, open-cockpit boats were perfect for day trips, water skiing, and cruising. Popular models included the iconic Chris-Craft Cavalier and the sleek Century Resorter.
  • Cruisers: Offering more cabin space and amenities, fiberglass cruisers like the Carver Coronado and Trojan F-25 opened up the possibility of weekend getaways or even extended cruising adventures.
  • Houseboats: Pioneered in the 1960s, houseboats made of fiberglass offered a unique way to live on the water. Brands like Holiday Houseboats provided all the comforts of home in a floating vessel.

Beyond Utility: A Celebration of Design

The 1960s wasn’t just about functionality; it was also a time of bold design aesthetics. Fiberglass boats embraced the era’s love for chrome accents, fins, and vibrant colors. Manufacturers experimented with innovative hull shapes, like the tri-hull design known for its stability, and incorporated features like wraparound windshields and sun decks. These design elements not only looked good, but also enhanced performance and comfort on the water.

A Legacy of Timeless Classics

Today, 1960s fiberglass boats are more than just vintage vessels. They’ve become prized collectibles, sought after by enthusiasts for their historical significance, timeless design, and solid build quality. Owning a restored 1960s fiberglass boat allows you to experience a piece of boating history and turn heads wherever you go on the water.

Secondhand buyers guide: Best classic boats

Nick Burnham picks out four classic boats on the market with quality heritage, classy styling and modern cruising ability

Built: 1967 Price: £99,000

Early in the 20th century, the Philip & Son boatyard on the River Dart turned out everything from Trinity House lightships to tugs and tankers. In the early ’60s, before Princess , Sunseeker and Fairline had even been thought of, this once-prolific yard turned its tools to luxury motor yachts.

Going straight in at 50ft, the twin-diesel Philips 50 was constructed using laminated Iroko frames planked with teak below the waterline and mahogany above. The superstructure was varnished teak with a sheathed plywood coachroof deck and wheelhouse roof. Launched at £20,000, six were built of which four remain – two of them on the Dart. This is one of them.

An aft-cabin layout creates space for three separate sleeping cabins, the master cabin aft with twin bunks, one each side. A large and well-lit saloon sits forward of the wheelhouse with the galley on the lower level forward, but what’s impressive is the heads opposite, which features an actual (if half-sized) bath! Varnished teak gives the interior a warm period feel.

An L-shaped seating area dominates the aft deck, with plenty of room to walk around the outside of it. With its wide side decks, there’s room to walk round the outside of the whole boat.

Performance

Twin Perkins 6.354 140hp shaftdrive diesel engines mean speeds are stately rather than speedy. MBY tested the very first Philips 50 to hit the water, recording an admirably precise 9.91 knots in pre-GPS times. Eight knots is a comfy cruising speed.

I experienced this classic boat’s sister ship out of Dartmouth, and it’s quite different compared to modern planing 50-footers. Very much a gentleman’s motor yacht, she’s slower, obviously, but rock steady. It’s boating for the pleasure of being at sea rather than racing to the next port in a ball of spray.

Morgan Giles Monaco 38

Built: 1968 Price: £37,500

secondhand-buyers-guide-classic-boats-princess-morgan-giles-monaco-38-exterior

Francis Charles Morgan Giles was a boat designer based at Hythe. In 1920 after the Great War, in which he served in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, he purchased Teignmouth Shipyard, renaming it Morgan Giles Ltd.

It quickly gained a worldwide reputation for its very high standard of workmanship. In 1939, a new shed was built that could take vessels to 100ft and the yard won many Admiralty contracts for military launches. Morgan Giles launched the Monaco range of fast motor boats in the 1950s, many of which campaigned in the Cowes-Torquay race.

Another aft-cabin layout taking full advantage of the length of the vessel, the Monaco 38 has two single berths and a small ensuite back aft of the open-backed wheelhouse. The forward accommodation is very simple, the main saloon has settee berths either side and a heads and galley in its aft corners. A separate forward cabin has vee berths.

secondhand-buyers-guide-classic-boats-princess-morgan-giles-monaco-38-interior

The shape of the Monaco 38 is absolutely classic 1960s motor boat styling, with just enough curves to its otherwise set square-shape profile to give it real elegance. Ergonomics in the ’60s weren’t what they are today – note the throttles positioned on top of the helm console!

Hard chine planing hulls and multi-diagonal glued mahogany plywood planking on mixed sawn and laminated rock elm frames kept the weight down (comparatively anyway) and the speed up – these were proper planing boats. Top speed with the twin Perkins 145hp diesels should be about 18 knots – super fast by ’60s standards!

The Monaco range of boats came with racing pedigree as standard; these were designed to be proper offshore boats.

Length: 38ft 6in (11.6m) Beam: 12ft 3in (3.7m) Draught: 3ft 0in (0.9m) Displacement: 10 tonnes Fuel capacity: 150 gallons (682 litres) Engines: Twin Perkins 145hp diesel Contact: Sandeman Yacht Company

Built: 1974 Price: £12,950

secondhand-buyers-guide-classic-boats-princess-project-31-exterior

‘Classic boats’ conjures up images of Rivas and Faireys . But is there a place in the classic boat pantheon for something a little more prosaic? I think there is and I think this is it.

When David King and his colleagues realised their fledgling motor boat charter business wasn’t going to work, they sold the boat they’d fitted out from a hull and deck moulding and accidentally kick-started one of the most successful boatbuilding companies in Europe.

It was the demand for that boat that encouraged them to build more. They bought another hull and deck moulding and the Project 31 , and with it Princess Yachts, was born.

There’s a wonderful honesty to classic boats of this era. They’re not pretending to be sleek racers, so cabin roofs are high, windows are big and layouts are basic. You get a small heads, a galley opposite a dinette and vee berths up front. There’s nothing clever about it, it just works.

This boat has been revamped, bringing it a little more up to date. White bulkheads replace the original heavy mahogany, there’s modern flooring and a new galley.

secondhand-buyers-guide-classic-boats-princess-project-31-interior

On the Princess 32 that replaced the Project 31, the cockpit had a flat floor. On this model there was a step up, resulting in a long aft seat. On this boat, the owner has removed the upholstery and fitted a rather natty-looking sofa instead. Further forward, there are a couple of captain’s chairs beneath the open-backed hardtop.

The Project 31 came with a variety of engines, from twin diesels that gave it planing speeds down to river-friendly small diesels. This classic boat has the latter, a single Volvo Penta AQD21A, giving 75hp for about 8 knots.

secondhand-buyers-guide-classic-boats-princess-project-31-helm

Out at sea and on the plane, a rather flat hull gave a somewhat harsh ride but at displacement speeds, that’s not an issue. A single outdrive will make it susceptible to strong crosswinds.

Length: 32ft 2in (9.7m) Beam: 9ft 1in (2.8m) Draught: 2ft 7in (0.8m) Displacement: 4 tonnes Fuel capacity: 110 gallons (500 litres) Engines: Volvo Penta MD21 75hp diesel Contact: TBS Boats

Riva Aquariva

Built: 2002 Price: £249,950

secondhand-buyers-guide-classic-boats-riva-aquariva-exterior

Does a boat have to be old to be a classic? Or can classic boat status be conferred upon it by dint of heritage, style and sheer class? I move that it can and I present exhibit A: the Riva Aquariva. If it’s true that money talks but wealth whispers, the Aquariva must be nigh on inaudible.

It murmurs about heritage, riffing off the classic Riva speedboats beloved of ’60s movie stars like Sophia Loren and Peter Sellers. As for the style and sheer class of the thing – well, it speaks for itself.

It might be 33ft long but it’s unashamedly a dayboat. There is a cabin under that gorgeous teak-laid foredeck, but it’s little more than a beautifully appointed cuddy with just enough room for two to lie down, and a loo under the bed in the centre.

secondhand-buyers-guide-classic-boats-riva-aquariva-transom

Outside is where it’s all about, soaking up the sunshine and the adulation in equal measure. A huge swoop of U-shaped seating wraps around a central pedestal that acts as a small table and a convenient grabrail.

Up ahead is a large double seat at the helm and back aft, a recessed sunpad tops the engines. If it all gets too much, a concealed bimini top rises electrically to provide some shade.

Providing the go to match the show are two Yanmar 6LYA STP 375hp turbo diesel engines married to twin-speed gearboxes. Shove the delicate stainless-steel column-mounted throttles to the stops and about 11 seconds later you’ll be doing 40 knots with another 2 or 3 knots still to go.

secondhand-buyers-guide-classic-boats-riva-aquariva-helm

Put the helm down at speed and the proper straight shaftdrives and rudders (rather than outdrives hanging off the back) offer the kind of graceful curves entirely in keeping with this classic boat’s effortless style – this is no point ’n shoot RIB. It’ll power through the rough stuff without shaking the martini too.

Length: 33ft 0in (10.0m) Beam: 9ft 2in (2.8m) Draught: 3ft 1in (1.0m) Displacement: 5.5 tonnes Fuel capacity:  105 gallons (480 litres) Engines: Twin Yanmar 6LYA STP 375hp diesel Contact: Boats.co.uk

Our verdict

The Philips 50 is the epitome of a classic boat: rock-solid wooden build, statesmanlike looks, tremendous period accommodation and even a bath. What more could you possibly want? Well, a little more speed perhaps, something that the smaller but equally elegant and equally nostalgic Monaco 38 provides.

But the Project 31 demonstrates that you don’t need wooden construction or a huge budget to go boating in a bona fide classic – as the genesis of Princess Yachts, it’s a boat that earns its classic boat tag yet is a usefully practical and affordable river runner.

But sod the cost. Sod the age too, the Riva Aquariva might be modern in both years and materials but just look at it! That’s a solid-gold classic right there and is my choice.

Original fittings were retained and re-chromed and all-new deck canopies fitted. The addition of a large bathing platform has enhanced the design and practicality of BSK.

Member Boats: 1955-1960

Boats presently or previously owned by members of the Heartland Classics Chapter.

The A ntique and C lassic B oat S ociety ( ACBS ) has designated age classifications which include boats of all hull material and purposes.  Although well known for wooden pleasure craft of the mid 20th century, the members’ appreciation of historic craftsmanship and styling blended with the purposeful utilitarian use of all vessels leads our members to be guardians of all types and ages of watercraft.

1955 Chris Craft Cavalier 15′ “Chickadee” owned by Dick & Cara Moist

1955 Chris Craft 15’ Utility Runabout Powered by Chris Craft A inboard 60 hp Hull # V221

Owned by Richard & Cara Moist of Springfield, Missouri

Chickadee started life in Indianapolis, IN in 1955. Was purchased by Dr. Charles “Chick” Comer for his brother Dr. Kenny Comer, who had just bought a summer cottage in upper Wisconsin on Little Saint Germain lake. Very soon after the purchase Dr. Chick passed away before having had a chance to ride in the boat. So you can see where the name came from.

In 1965 we meet Dr. Chicks son Dr. Jonathan “Jot” Comer and his wife Gwen at Great Lakes Naval Training Center where we were both serving as Dental officers. During the course of the next few years, we would meet and became friends with all associated with the Chickadee. As age took its course Dr. Kenny died and wife Clair wanted Jot to have the boat. It was hauled to Mooresville, IN where the families lived.

We traveled to Mooresville each year for the 500 and Jot and family came to MO in the summer to boat. We brought the boat to Springfield for minor repair and to run it on Table Rock lake. A couple of years later the boat went back to IN to be used there for one year. That winter Jot died from prostate cancer. The boat was stored for two years before we bought it and brought it back to Springfield in 2001. At that time it underwent a complete refinishing and motor rebuild, bring it to modern standards.

It now resides on Table Rock Lake at the Ozarks Yacht Club dock on Indian point. It comes out for evening rides and ACBS events.

1956 Lone Star 14’ Admiral Deluxe Powered by Evinrude Big Twin 40 hp Owned by Steve and Cristalle Romano

Driving on the backroads in 2005 In Paxico, Kansas, I finally arrived Way out in the sticks, in a farmer’s field Her bow was straight, and my eyes were peeled A beauty she was, I couldn’t believe my luck A ’56 Lone Star Admiral Deluxe With a little trading and a little cash I brought her home, to the rest of my stash She sat in my yard, for a few more years Until 2011, when she was resurrected from her peers A new transom was built, and her steering was fixed Minor engine work completed, emotions all mixed A couple more years, ‘til I could add new seats In 2013, she became the shining star of my fleet Out on the waters of Pomona Lake She cruises in style, through the waves that she makes Her horn blows loud, greeting the passersby My pride and joy, ‘Put Put’ puts a smile on this guy

“E Z Rider” 1956 Lyman 18’ Runabout Inline GrayMarine Flat Head 6 cyl 100 hp Owned by Bruce Hurst and Correne Wahlmer of Sand Springs, OK

E Z Rider is a “Lapstrake” built with lapping plywood strips on white oak frames. The deck trim is mahogany plywood, the seats are mahogany. The boat was built in Sandusky, Ohio. The original owner Mr. Von Ellis owned the boat until 1975. After several owners, Bob Van Dyke purchased it in 2007 but never put it in the water. We purchased it from him 4/27/2011.

The first cleanup process included taking out the gas tank to clean it, overhaul the starter, glue the after deck back in place, plus a bit of varnish work. We tried it out at the sailboat club on Lake Keystone. The engine ran quite well but the boat leaked a LOT, anyway we took it to Table Rock and had a good time with it.

After returning home I started stripping the paint inside and out. A previous owner had used bath tub caulk down all the seams on the bottom which started to peel back. It looked like hair hanging off the bottom. The boat was stripped to bare wood, then sealed with four coats of CPES inside and out before the primer coats were added. Four coats of Pettit Bright White finished the job.

The windshield frame was badly split so I decided to try my hand at making one from scratch. I obtained enough Sapele board to do the job. It took a lot of figuring, cutting, gluing & routing to make a pretty decent looking windshield. All the varnished parts on the inside of the boat were stripped of varnish, most of the seats were split and needed to be glued back together, sanded, sealed and revarnished. The transom had been sanded through the veneer so back to the wood shop for more Sapele to build a new one.

Love Me Timber

1958 Century Coronado 21′ “Love Me Timber” owned by Kevin & Jeanne Hogan

1958 Century 21’ Coronado   Powered by AMC 327 V/8      238 hp

Owned by Kevin and Jeanne Hogan, Olathe, KS

Love Me Timber was born in 1958 with a beam of 74”.  Her heart is a Graymarine/AMC 327 that pumps out 240 hp at 3,800 rpm.  Known in the 50’s for their fast, powerful boats, the Century Coronado’s were record holders for pulling up the most (9) slalom skiers at one time.  Therefore, the nickname the “Thoroughbred” of boats.

Dr. William Springer, Manistee, Michigan, the first owner, brought her with him to Hot Springs, Arkansas when he retired from practice.  She spent the next several years on Lake Hamilton and belonged to two different owners.

In the mid 70’s she was sold to Burney Whitfield of Myers Realty in Hot Springs who sold it to Steve Carter and Bill McCord of Salty Dog Boat Rentals.  Burney’s daughter Kristi remembers the old boat she used to ski behind as spotless.

In 2001 J.C. Renner brought her to Table Rock Lake in Missouri for a family boat until she needed a complete restoration.  However, after taking her apart, J.C. decided to sell her in pieces and advertised in Mahogany & Chrome.  That’s where Kevin Hogan saw the potential though it was upside down on a rickety dolly. 60-70% of her framing was barely useable, even for patterns.  The decision had to be made to re-plank with all new African Mahogany over Northern White Oak framing.

By early fall of 2013 Love Me Timber was restored to brand new with the addition of many new hi-tech systems.  She’s even better than when she was first purchased.  The name is taken from an Elvis Presley song that was number one on the charts in 1958, Love Me Tender.  And, I can truly say that after forming her ribs, fitting her coverings, applying her make-up, along with spending nearly 1200 hours bringing her back to life . . . I love her timbers.

“N” 2 Deep

1958 Thompson Off-Shore 18′ “N”2Deep owned by Marty & Barbara Thompson

1958 Thompson Off-Shore      18’

Powered by a Mercury 500    50 hp

Owned by Martin and Barbara Thompson

“N” 2 Deep was originally in the Great Lakes Area in Michigan.  She was purchased by a man in Maine and now she is in Missouri.

The Thompson is wood lapstrake with mahogany deck, dash, rails, seats and transom. The motor is 1960 Mercury Kiekhaefer 500. The motor was purchased out of a large Mercury Collection in Michigan.

We bought the Thompson online from the owner in Greenwood, Maine in January, 2013.  We brought her home in May, 2013 and spent two seasons on Lake Viking and one season at Lake of the Ozarks.

Then she went off to Rice, Minnesota for restoration by Dave Watts at the Little Rock Boat Works. The interior work was done by Ken Biggs at K&S Upholstery in Smithville, MO.

The reason for the name is because we have a considerable investment in her.

Now, she is ready for fun!!!

1958 Cadillac Coronado

This 1958 Cadillac Coronado is now part of the Cadillac fleet owned by Roy Showalter of Searcy, Arkansas.

This 14′ 1958 Cadillac Coronado has a 1969 Johnson outboard 40 hp motor.  I acquired the boat in Connecticut.  It was in pretty bad shape.  The boat, trailer, and engine were all restored by Russell Warren at his shop Diamond Design Auto Body in Magnolia, Arkansas.

1960 Chris Craft Cavalier 17′ “Irish Mist” owned by Rafe Hunsucker

1960 Chris Craft 17’ Cavalier   Powered by a Chrysler K     90 hp  Owned by Rafe Hunsucker of Broken Arrow, OK

Irish Mist was a family ski boat purchased by Estle and Vondah Hunsucker back in 1962.  She is powered by a 90 hp Chrysler Hercules inline, flathead, 6-cylinder motor.

Irish Mist was restored during 2010-2011 by the Antique Boat Shop in Fort Wayne, Indiana.  She is a wonderful vessel with all original Philippine mahogany.  All that brought her back to life was getting her stripped, stained and varnished.  All of the chrome work was redone.  New upholstery was made and we had to replace the windshield.

Lastly, we had her named.  Her name is done in gold-leaf with a green clover.  She is named Irish Mist to commemorate my father, Estle E. Hunsucker, who was known by many as “Irish”.

Since the restoration, Irish Mist has had a handful of adventures.  They include Grand Lake of the Cherokees, Table Rock Lake, and most recently, Beaver Lake.

1960 Texas Maid 18’ Tahiti Mercury 110hp Mark Engstrom

1960 Glasspar Seafair Sedan 17′ “Ridiculous” owned by Greg & Diann Kuhl

1960 Glasspar 17’ Seafair  Powered by Mercury Outboard 115 hp

Owned by Greg and Diann Kuhl of St. Peters, MO

Ridiculous was purchased about 6 years ago. He bought the Glasspar with the intention of selling the parts, as the boat was in terrible condition.  But once the boat was in the garage, Diann, his wife, thought the boat was cute, so Greg decided to restore the boat for her.

The restoration of the boat took two years. Greg did all the restoration work himself except for the upholstery. Greg replaced the transom, the stringers, the floor, and a lot of fiberglass repair prior to painting the entire boat.  He added custom accessories, such as gunnel storage and a rear seat. The original color was drab green and white but we wanted something fun and bright, hence the colors blue and yellow.

We named the boat “Ridiculous” because of the amount of time and money it took to restore the boat.

Unfortunately we do not know the history of the boat.

TWILIGHT OF AN ERA.

The industry shakes out.

By 1960, many of the venerable names in traditional wooden boats were gone: Hacker-Craft, Dodge, Gar Wood, Ventnor. Hundreds of smaller wood boat builders saw orders dry up as new players, schooled in the new disciplines of FRP (fiberglass reinforced plastic) and aluminum construction, brought their products to market. Chris Craft continued building wood boats into the 1960s. The 21 foot Continental shown here was introduced in 1960 with gull wing hatches on a unique fiberglass hard top that flipped for easy boarding and were removable for open-air cruising. Chris Craft did tool up to produce in fiberglass in 1964—the Commander. They had already acquired Roamer, and Chris Craft Roamers of steel were all over the country.

The luxury Italian builder Riva showed fiberglass hulls alongside wood in the boat shows of late sixties and early seventies. Their current hull models still utilize copious amounts of wood in the trim, one of the few who survived to the present with a super-luxury branding. They started in 1842.

I have a mercury 2 stroke outboard that was made in the early 60's and I'm not sure of the hp.The color is white. When I bought it it had a 9.8 hp sticker on the cowl.I believe it's a long shaft. The serial number is 1581225 on the lower housing. The part that goes around the base of the motor which I call a pan. It's black in color and it has a 6 hp sticker on it.I've been trying to get info by using the serial number. That number tells me that it's a 1963 merc 60 6hp.I wanted to check the engine block for identification and found a part number on cylinder part of the block. Its 837-1903 with a 1903A description number for the whole engine block.I found a block on ebay that had that number on the engine block. The description said it was a mercury 110 11 hp.Were the engines interchangeable with different models?I also looked at the bolts that are for mounting the motor to the lower housing and they were rusted and don't look original.Do I have a pieced together outboard? The cylinder block part number 837-1903 and the 1903A numbers are the only info i have for the engine.Could someone help me out and identify what hp motor I have?

Re: 1960's era mercury motors. The model 110 was a 9.8hp, not 11. It was approximately 11 cubic inches and usually had the word LIGHTNING cast into the side of the water jacket on the intake port side. The 6hp had the word COMET cast into the block. This is NOT to be confused with the later 7.5hp block that had the word COMET stuck onto the block with a sticker, above the cast-in LIGHTNING designation. They are very different blocks! The cast-COMET block is 7.2 cubic inches, while the sticker-COMET block is an 11 cuber with smaller porting than the 9.8 block.

Re: 1960's era mercury motors. It sounds like you have what is referred to as a Franken Merc motor by some here on the forum. If memory serves me right, the boating industry switched the old 10HP rated motors to 9.9 so they could be used on some of the smaller lakes with a restriction of less than 10 hp. They also started rating the HP at the prop instead of the flywheel about the same time. Several parts of the smaller motors would interchange with other years of motors, and this is probably what has happened to your motor. JMO Oldman570

The Boats of Chris-Craft

Launched in 1984,  WOOD ® magazine is the world's most trusted woodworking resource — a distinction we've earned by guaranteeing our readers' success in their woodworking shops. It is the  mission of our staff to inspire and inform woodworkers at every stage of their journey by providing reliable and accurate project plans, woodworking techniques, and product reviews.

Back in 1894, thrill-seeking vacationers on Michigan's St. Clair River paid a nickel or so to skip across the water at 5mph in a powered rowboat. At the helm was Christopher Columbus Smith, a boatbuilder as well as an outdoors guide and market hunter.

He and his older brother Hank had joined up to build boats in Algonac, Michigan, some 10 years earlier. What they began there eventually became a company name synonymous with powerboating worldwide—Chris-Craft.

Speeding into the 20th century

The engine the brothers had adapted to their rowboat was like a small steam engine. But instead of water heated in its boiler, it heated naptha. It wasn't many years later, though, that the gasoline engine came along. And Chris Smith jumped on it.

As then sole proprietor of the "Chris Smith & Co., Boat Builders and Boat Livery," he began powering his wooden boats with the gasoline engines. The "runabouts" he created added the thrill of speed to boating. By 1910 one of his mahogany-planked boats with its 100-hp engine was clocked at 33 mph. Two years later, the Chris Smithbuilt Baby Reliance II set a record of 53.7 mph over a measured mile—the first time that any boat had passed the 50-mph mark.

Into the 1920s, Chris Smith's boats, driven by racer Gar Wood, set speed records everywhere they went. One race even defined the materials that were to become a Chris-Craft trademark.

To qualify for the 1920 international Harmsworth Trophy speedboat race, held in England, all boat and engine materials must have originated in the country of the entrant. Smith's boats had always been planked with Honduras mahogany, but Honduras was a protectorate of Great Britain. So the boat that Gar Wood was to pilot to victory was constructed of Philippine mahogany (actually not a mahogany at all), which met the rules because the Philippine Islands were a United States' protectorate. From that time on, practically all wooden boats from Algonac advertised as "solid mahogany" were made from Philippine mahogany, with structural members of native woods such as white oak.

Following more than a decade of racing achievements and technical innovations, Smith and Gar Wood ended their association in 1922. From then on, Chris Smith & Sons Boat Company used its racing expertise and reputation to make and sell wooden runabouts, now brand-named Chriscraft, to the general public. With a workforce of 30 men, the company built and shippeda boat about every week from spring through fall that year. That number, though, was soon to change dramatically.

Runabouts come of fashion

The Roaring Twenties produced more than a rage for the Charleston. Buyers were becoming more and more interested in powerboating for fun and sociability. It was a boon to boatbuilders, and none more so than Chris Smith & Sons.

The Algonac boatbuilders took advantage of the nation's new appetite for powerboating, and by 1929 could produce over 900 units annually. But Chris Smith & Sons did something no other boatbuilders had tried: It standardized construction.

All boatbuilders, including the Smiths, had always built boats one by one. But realizing that they could sell more Chris-Crafts (as their runabouts were then officially called) than they could build, the Smiths began experimenting with standardizing models in 1924. They began to cut parts from templates and divide the work into specialized crews that performed only one operation on a hull instead of building the entire boat. The changeover resulted in the company producing some models at the rate of a boat-and-a-half a day.

In 1926, the Smiths once again tried something new—selling through franchised dealers, just as cars were sold. Previously, all boats had been sold direct from factory to customer. That year, you could buy a 22' inboard Chris-Craft runabout for less than $2,000. And that included electric start and reverse as standard equipment items. (Today, that same boat, in excellent original or restored condition, would cost you about $20,000.)

With increased production and a growing dealer network, the "World's Largest Builder of All Mahogany Runabouts" was using a lot of wood. In 1927, for instance, Chris Smith & Sons Boat Company contracted for 1 million board feet of Philippine mahogany—at a cost of about 15 cents per board foot.

The building of a Chris-Craft

The boats built by the Smiths had a reputation for quality construction (see the cutaway illustration below ), even though they were more or less mass-produced. Chris- Crafts of the 1920s and 1930s and for years to come featured doubleplanked bottoms of solid Philippine mahogany. In between was a water-repellent layer of oil soaked canvas. The keels were either Philippine mahogany or white oak. The oak, steambent, was used for the ribs. Bolts and screws were bronze (later, silicon bronze), and the screw holes were plugged with Philippine mahogany "bungs," a name picked up from beer barrels.

Inside, hulls were coated with linseed oil below the water line, then covered with two coats of Valspar marine varnish, followed by paint. Outside, the hull bottoms received a heavy coat of green or gray paint.

All visible natural wood—the Philippine mahogany—on the hull, decks, cowls, etc., was rubbed with grain filler, sanded, and covered with four coats of marine varnish. When the boat was completed, upholstery and all, mechanics fitted it with an inboard engine. All boats then were tested for speed and handling along a measured course on the St. Clair River.

Only for a few years following World War II, when wood shortages were widespread, did Chris-Craft depart from its quality construction. The boat company substituted white cedar—or any other suitable wood it could find—for the then-scarce Philippine mahogany it had so long relied on. But when substitutions were made, management insisted that the hulls be painted rather than stained and varnished as was traditional.

The end of an era

Chris-Craft survived the Great Depression of the 1930s—barely—by introducing utility craft, which cost less. By the early 1940s, the company was up and running full speed again, featuring nearly 100 models. During World War II, Chris-Craft devoted much of its production to the war effort. (As with all boat manufacturers, the company was prohibited from making pleasure craft from 1943-45.) It built landing craft, target boats, aircraft rescue boats, and command boats (resembling PT boats). These required a switch to plywood, a foreign material to the company, but one to which it easily adapted.

The 1950s and 1960s saw Chris-Craft embark in new directions—kit boats (even kit furniture), outboard motors, mahogany-and-fir plywood boats, steel boats, fiberglassed plywood boats, and molded fiberglass boats. It was a period of experimentation and great expansion. Eventually, Chris-Craft Industries—a publicly held company emerged when the Smith family decided to yield ownership. The 1960s also marked the end of an era as Chris-Craft Industries completed the transition from mahogany to completely fiberglass construction of its boats.

By the 1980s, not only had the wooden boat long left the scene, but so did Chris-Craft as an independent boat manufacturer. The company and the name were acquired by Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC) in 1989.

Editor's note: The complete company archives of the Chris-Craft boat division were donated by Chris-Craft Industries, Inc. to the Mariners' Museum in Newport News, Virginia, in 1987. Also donated were two early Chris-Craft boats, a 26' runabout and a 38' commuter, both of which have been restored to original condition.

1960s motorboat

While I usually play with older motors, I have a 1964 boat that needs a motor.

I am going to look at a 60’s Johnson 60hp V-4 today.

Any thoughts on what to look for besides my sanity.

Thanks in advance.

"I don't fully understand everything I know!"

1960s motorboat

Pretty heavy and gas hungry motors. We upgraded our 1960 40hp Lark to a 1964 Sportfour on our 14′ Glasspar and it didn’t improve performance much. A little more powerful but alot thirstier.

' src=

Dad bought V4 60 new in 1965 and put it on his 14′ Aluminum Crestliner Voyager that was rated for 60 HP. With a 12 inch prop and me alone in it, trimmed up, it did 41 MPH, and 38 with an 11 inch prop. (I only weighed 150 then as a teenager). I learned to ski barefoot behind that boat. Downside was it was a lot of weight on the back of a light boat, so you had to know what you were doing to drive it, because the weight of motor +battery+gas at the rear messed up handling. It was no longer a boat we could let just anyone drive, like we could with the previous 40 HP. We used it a lot for skiing and it used less gas than the 1960 40 Johnson it replaced – probably because the 40 was run at WOT most of the time, and worked harder to pull up skiers and plane off, although I was able to routinely pull three teenage gals out of the water on two skis with that 40. The 40 (don’t know what prop it had) had a top speed on that boat on high trim of 33 MPH. Keep in mind those old speedometers were anything but accurate, but numbers I’ve given for the 60 and the 40 were with the same speedometer.

We ran the he!! out of that motor, running about 200 gallons of gas each summer for almost 20 years before trading it for a used I/O. It was often abused, run at highest trim setting, cavitating to high RPMs on quick corners, etc. It was bulletproof, but it was the same basic design as 75 and 90 HPs and maybe bigger ones yet, just smaller cylinders, so most of the parts were designed for much more HP. I only had to replace the normal stuff – spark plugs, fuel pump diaphragm, impeller, and once I replaced the distributor rotor. We ran SAE 30 non-detergent oil at 40 to1 with no problems.

As you check out that motor, look at the distributor cap inside and out – they are no longer available and if you can find one, it will likely cost a mint if it’s new. Note that the early V4 60s still had adjustable high speed carb jets – nice! Of course – look for the wiring, ignition key switch and solenoid box to be included. On motors of that vintage, I ask what gas/oil mix has been used and if they say 100 to 1 – I walk away. Dave An old photo (1968) of the 60 on the Crestliner:

Boats1968

Same basic motor as a 75 of the same year. Smaller pistons and carburetor. It’l run within a MPH or two same speed as a 75, on less gas. They were spec’d 50:1 mix with no problem.

Thanks to all for the replies. I am going to pass on this one. Has been stored outside under a tarp for a while and mice have moved in.

Turned out to be a VXH-12 long shaft. (1966)

Has the controls and manuals and the owner really just wants it gone.

Too big for me after looking at it up close.

Located in Western Maine if anyone has an interest.
