Haunting new video has shown how the extent of the damage to the submersible in the catastrophe that left five people dead.

Listen to this article

The Titan submersible imploded in June 2023, on the way to the Titanic shipwreck, killing all passengers on board.

That included Stockton Rush, the CEO of Oceangate, the company that made and owned the sub.

The inquiry into the disaster released new footage of the destroyed submersible on Wednesday.

The wreckage, at 3,776 metres below the waves, lies in ruins on the seabed.

The inquiry heard concerns about the structural integrity and design of the sub on Wednesday.

The wreckage of the Titan sub

Problems included that the sub was cylindrical, when a spherical shape would have been better at withstanding the pressure of deep-sea dives.

In addition, the sole window in the Titan was rated to a depth of 1,300 metres by its manufacturer, but the sub was going down almost three times deeper.

Another problem was that the Titan was made of carbon fibre consisting of layers of resin, which the inquiry heard was unusual for a vessel of this kind.

An expert told the inquiry how there were irregularities in the hull which would have made it less structurally secure on deep-sea dives.

Dr Don Kramer, an engineer at the National Transportation Safety Board, said that a bang heard as the sub was coming back up from a 2022 dive.

Another issue, according to Dr Kramer, was the places where carbon fibre parts met rings of titanium within the structure, which were particularly weak points.

The inquiry also heard from a man who had gone on a dive in a previous prototype of the Titan, which had left him feeling shaken after he heard a cracking noise.

The Titan submersible

Stockton Rush said at the time that it was the vessel shifting in its metal frame, but Dr Kramer said that a change was taking place in the structure of the hull.

Karl Stanley said: "We got down there and it’s making noises - the sound of a carbon fibre bond breaking... We were all clearly a little disnerved.”

He went on: "Then there was kind of like a grand finale of cracking sounds as we were getting close to the surface."

The five crew members onboard the sub were British explorer Hamish Harding, British-Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman, Mr Rush and French deep-sea explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet (known as “Mr Titanic”).

New Details of the “Titan” Passengers' Final Moments and 3 More Highlights from Coast Guard Investigation

“I have no desire to die,” the doomed sub's pilot and creator, Stockton Rush, previously said

Over the last week, a number of new details and revelations have been made public as part of the U.S. Coast Guard’s ongoing investigation into how the Titan submersible imploded during a doomed dive last summer, killing all five people onboard .

The headline-grabbing moments at the hearing — which began in Charleston, S.C., on Sept. 16 and ends on Friday, Sept. 27 — included confirmation of the Titan ’s final messages to the surface, photos and video of recovery teams later discovering the submersible’s remains on the ocean floor and a number of firsthand accounts about what it was like working or diving with Titan operator OceanGate, which has now ceased operations and is cooperating with the Coast Guard.

Investigators will submit a final report once their work is complete, which is expected to go beyond the two-week hearing.

Officials could also make recommendations about deep-sea diving and private submersibles, like the Titan — whose design has attracted widespread scrutiny and criticism by other experts who say it didn’t conform to industry norms.

Here are some of the highlights from the Titan hearing so far.

The Titan Sub Sent Final Message Seconds Before Losing Contact

The last texts exchanged between the Titan and its support ship, the Polar Prince , were confirmed as part of a recreation of the Titan dive to see the Titanic wreckage that was shown by U.S. Coast Guard Marine Board of Investigation officials on Sept. 16, near the start of the hearing.

The animated video detailed how the Titan began diving down from the Polar Prince off the coast of Canada around 9:20 a.m. local time on June 18, 2023.

At 10:47 a.m., at a depth of about 3,350 meters and a pressure of 4,900 lbs. per square inch, the Titan messaged that they “dropped two wts,” referring to their weights — and contact was then lost almost immediately, at 10:47:32 a.m., according to the Coast Guard.

An expert has told PEOPLE that dropping the weight was likely just to help the Titan traverse the water around the Titanic .

Eerie Photo and Video of Titan Debris Helped Confirm Implosion

Last week, authorities released the first photo of what remained of the Titan on the floor of the North Atlantic Ocean after the submersible imploded.

The image, which features the vessel's tail cone embedded into the seabed more than 12,000 feet below the surface, was presented by U.S. Coast Guard officials on Sept. 16.

The photographic evidence, from a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), led to "conclusive evidence of a catastrophic loss" of the Titan and the death of its five passengers, officials said in their presentation.

The victims were Paul-Henri Nargeolet and another adventurer, Hamish Hardin; father and son Shahzada and Suleiman Dawood; and Stockton Rush, who co-founded OceanGate, the company behind the  Titan .

According to the Coast Guard's presentation, the ROV, called the Pelagic Research Services 6000, discovered the aft tail cone and other debris after extensive searching on June 22, 2023, four days after the submersible lost contact with the surface.

Video also released by the U.S. Coast Guard gave a closer look at what remained of the Titan — its "dome, aft ring, hull remnants and carbon fiber debris on the seafloor" as found by an ROV, the Coast Guard said.

Dueling Pictures of OceanGate Founder and Titan Pilot

Years before the final dive, Rush took another small group of passengers to see another famed ship beneath the waves — but fell into “panic” due to a lack of experience, a former operations director claimed.

David Lochridge, who worked at OceanGate until 2018, which Rush co-founded and ran as CEO, testified on Sept. 17. He did not mince words about his views on Rush or OceanGate.

“The whole idea behind the company was to make money,” Lochridge said at one point. “That’s it.”

He was no less blunt in recounting a previous voyage, reportedly in 2016, in which Rush insisted on piloting another of OceanGate’s submersibles, called the Cyclops 1 , down to see the remains of the Andrea Doria ocean liner.

Lochridge said he had expected to be the pilot, as the “most experienced” such member of OceanGate’s team.

“Unfortunately, the CEO decided that he wanted to take it down,” Lochridge said. “I objected because I knew sometimes he could do things to please himself.”

Later, however, a former OceanGate mission specialist — the title given to paying passengers or observers of its underwater dives — struck a defensive and sometimes tearful tone and pushed back on Lochridge’s account in her own testimony on Sept. 19.

Renata Rojas, a self-described Titanic obsessive, was aboard the trip down to the Andrea Doria that Lochridge described.

“He must have gone on a different dive,” she said. “Nobody was panicking. Nobody was crying and there was definitely no swearing or yelling.”

On the day of the final Titan voyage last year, Rojas was working as a "platform assistant" and recalled seeing all five passengers, including Rush, "smiling" as they boarded the sub. "They were just happy to go," she said.

As her testimony came to a close, Rojas cried as she reflected on how, "nothing is going to bring our friends back."

However, Rojas went on to state that she hoped the investigation "creates an understanding that with exploration there is risk."

Concerns About the Sub Had Been Discussed Before

Rush had insisted on doing the Titan sub's first crewed test dive by himself, just in case something happened, according to the man he co-founded OceanGate with.

Guillermo Söhnlein, who started OceanGate with Rush in 2009 and left the company in 2013, testified on Monday, Sept. 23, that Rush told him he didn't "want anybody else on that sub" for the first dive to 4,000 meters.

"If anything happens, I want it to only impact me,” Söhnlein, who did not specify when the dive took place, recalled Rush saying. “It's my design. I believe in it. I trust it, but I don't want to risk anybody else and I'm gonna go by myself.”

Rush had also been confronted in more direct ways by those who feared his work was dangerous: During a 2018 meeting with Lochridge, his former operations director, he challenged Lochridge’s criticism.

“I have no desire to die,” Rush said then, according to a transcript of their meeting shared by the Coast Guard.

“I understand this kind of risk, and I'm going into it with eyes open and I think this is one of the safest things I will ever do.”

Titan submersible's scientific director says the sub malfunctioned just prior to the Titanic dive

Steven ross told the board about a platform issue the experimental submersible experienced in june 2023, just days before it imploded on its way to the titanic site, by patrick whittle | the associated press • published september 19, 2024 • updated on september 19, 2024 at 2:43 pm.

The scientific director for the company that owned the Titan submersible that imploded last year while on its way to the Titanic wreckage testified Thursday that the sub had malfunctioned just prior to the fatal dive .

Appearing before a U.S. Coast Guard panel , Steven Ross told the board about a platform issue the experimental submersible experienced in June 2023, just days before it imploded on its way to the Titanic site. The malfunction caused passengers onboard the submersible to “tumble about,” and it took an hour to get them out of the water.

The submersible pilot, OceanGate co-founder Stockton Rush, crashed into bulkheading during the malfunction, Ross said.

‘All good here' was 1 of the final texts sent from the doomed Titan submersible

Earlier Thursday, Renata Rojas, a mission specialist for the company, told the Coast Guard the firm was staffed by competent people who wanted to “make dreams come true.”

Get Tri-state area news delivered to your inbox. Sign up for NBC New York's News Headlines newsletter.

An investigatory panel had previously listened to two days of testimony that raised questions about the company's operations before the doomed mission . Rush was among five people who died when the submersible imploded en route to the site of the Titanic wreck in June 2023.

Rojas' testimony struck a different tone than some of the earlier witnesses, who described the company as troubled from the top down and focused more on profit than science or safety.

“I was learning a lot and working with amazing people,” Rojas said. “Some of those people are very hardworking individuals that were just trying to make dreams come true.”

Rojas also said she felt the company was sufficiently transparent during the run-up to the Titanic dive. Her testimony was emotional at times, with the Coast Guard panel proposing a brief break at one point so she could collect herself.

Rojas is a member of the Explorers Club, which lost members Hamish Harding and Paul-Henri Nargeolet in the Titan implosion. The club described Rush as “a friend of The Explorers Club” after the implosion.

“I knew what I was doing was very risky. I never at any point felt unsafe by the operation,” Rojas said in testimony Thursday.

Earlier this month, the Coast Guard opened a public hearing that is part of a high-level investigation into the cause of the implosion. The public hearing began on Sept. 16 and some of the testimony has focused on problems the company had prior to the fatal 2023 dive.

Investigators also released underwater footage of the submersible wreck. The footage shows the submersible's tail cone and other debris on the ocean floor.

During the hearing, former OceanGate operations director David Lochridge said Tuesday he frequently clashed with Rush and felt the company was committed only to making money.

“The whole idea behind the company was to make money,” Lochridge testified. “There was very little in the way of science.”

Lochridge and other witnesses have painted a picture of a company led by people who were impatient to get the unconventionally designed craft into the water. The deadly accident set off a worldwide debate about the future of private undersea exploration.

Coast Guard officials noted at the start of the hearing that the submersible had not been independently reviewed, as is standard practice. That and Titan’s unusual design subjected it to scrutiny in the undersea exploration community.

OceanGate, based in Washington state, suspended its operations after the implosion . The company has no full-time employees currently, but has been represented by an attorney during the hearing.

During the submersible’s final dive on June 18, 2023, the crew lost contact after an exchange of texts about the Titan’s depth and weight as it descended. The support ship Polar Prince then sent repeated messages asking if the Titan could still see the ship on its onboard display.

One of the last messages from Titan’s crew to Polar Prince before the submersible imploded stated, “all good here,” according to a visual recreation presented earlier in the hearing.

When the submersible was reported missing, rescuers rushed ships, planes and other equipment to an area about 435 miles south of St. John’s, Newfoundland. Four days later, wreckage of the Titan was found on the ocean floor about 330 yards off the bow of the Titanic, Coast Guard officials said.

No one on board survived. Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman were the other two people killed in the implosion.

OceanGate said it has been fully cooperating with the Coast Guard and NTSB investigations since they began. The Titan had been making voyages to the Titanic wreckage site going back to 2021.

Titan Passenger Says Anyone Who 'Felt Safe' Diving in Submersible Was 'Delusional': 'Wasn't Supposed to Be'

Former passenger Fred Hagen said the 'Titan' — which imploded and left five people dead in June 2023 — was "an experimental vessel [and] it was clear that it was dangerous"

yacht titan position

EyePress News/Shutterstock

A former passenger on OceanGate's Titan submersible said during a U.S. Coast Guard hearing this week that the vessel ultimately "wasn't supposed to be safe," as he understood the dangers involved in exploring the Titanic wreckage before taking part in two previous dives.

Fred Hagen, an OceanGate mission specialist — which is how the company referred to its passengers — appeared at the  Coast Guard's ongoing hearing  into the Titan tragedy  on Friday, Sept. 20. He explained the experience from the perspective of someone who was previously onboard.

Hagen called the Titan dive a "high-risk endeavor in which a dedicated attempt was made to adhere to a culture of safety," ABC News reports.

"It was not safe diving in the Titan and it was never supposed to be safe," Hagen said.

Courtesy of Fred Hagen

“Anyone that felt safe going to depths in the Titan was deluded or delusional. It was an experimental vessel, it was clear that it was dangerous,” Hagen added, per a video shared by ABC News 4 . "It's kind of like jumping out of an airplane. You don’t do it because it’s safe, you do it because it’s an adrenaline rush.”

Hagen then explained that he was not "going down in search of safety," but rather "exploration." He previously told PEOPLE that participating in a dive is "a highly risky endeavor that could result in death," something that passengers "clearly understand."

Five people — including OceanGate CEO  Stockton Rush — died in the implosion in June 2023. The Coast Guard's hearing kicked off on Monday, Sept. 16, and has since highlighted the final “ all good here ” message from the doomed voyage before the submersible lost contact with the surface, as well as other first-hand accounts from mission specialists.

The four other people onboard the Titan who died in the tragedy were explorer  Paul-Henri Nargeolet ; adventurer  Hamish Harding ; and father and son  Shahzada and Suleman Dawood .

Hagen — who took part in dives in July 2021 and July 2022 to view the wreckage of the Titanic — also detailed "the paradigm that we had to be comfortable with," per ABC News, which was that there "were limited assets" that could rescue passengers if something were to go wrong during the dives.

As he explained, citing conversations he had with people such as Nargeolet, those assets "probably could not be organized logistically and scrambled in time to save anyone if something went wrong" on the submersible.

During the hearing, Hagen also recalled an "incident" in 2021 in which multiple bolts “shot off like bullets” when a crane operator abruptly let go of the submersible on the deck days before a dive, per CNN. During that dive in particular, Hagen remembered, the Titan was free-falling for about two-and-a-half hours, according to CNN . He also cited another dive in which the submersible was temporarily stuck in the Titanic 's wreckage, which he described in video shared by ABC News 4.

"We saw all the normal, iconic sites, and I wanted to investigate the area of the rupture," Hagen said. "Of course, there's a lot of currents swirling around and we briefly got stuck. It was just, like, pipes and things. When I say stuck, we weren't stuck — I doubt if it was more than a minute or two."

Hagen's latest comments during the hearing come days after the U.S. Coast Guard released footage of the Titan wreckage on the floor of the North Atlantic Ocean, taken by a remotely operated vehicle. As the Coast Guard noted in a video description, the footage "led to the conclusive evidence of the catastrophic loss of the submersible Titan  and the death of all five members aboard."

Titan company co-founder says goal was to create fleet of subs, "give humanity greater access to the ocean"

The co-founder of the company that owned the experimental submersible that imploded en route to the wreckage of the Titanic described lofty goals when the company was created, telling the U.S. Coast Guard on Monday that the company wanted to create multiple deep-water submersibles that could be deployed around the world.

Businessman Guillermo Sohnlein, who helped found OceanGate with Stockton Rush , said the original vision was to create a fleet of four or five deep-diving submersibles capable of carrying five people to 6,500 yards deep. The plan for the company was to have no dedicated mothership.

"We wanted to give humanity greater access to the ocean, specifically the deep ocean," Sohnlein said.

Sohnlein ultimately left the company before the Titan disaster in June 2023. Rush was among the five people who died when the submersible imploded. Though Sohnlein left the Washington company years ago, he defended its efforts in the aftermath of the submersible's implosion.

The Coast Guard opened a public hearing earlier this month that is part of a high-level investigation into the cause of the implosion. Some of the testimony has focused on the troubled nature of the company. Earlier in the hearing, former OceanGate operations director David Lochridge said he frequently clashed with Rush and felt the company was committed only to making money.

"The whole idea behind the company was to make money," Lochridge testified. "There was very little in the way of science."

Other witnesses expected to testify Monday include former OceanGate engineering director Phil Brooks and Roy Thomas of the American Bureau of Shipping. The hearing is expected to run through Friday and include more witnesses.

Lochridge and other witnesses have painted a picture of a troubled company that was impatient to get its unconventionally designed craft into the water. The accident set off a worldwide debate about the future of private undersea exploration.

Steven Ross, the scientific director for OceanGate, told an investigative panel last week that the sub malfunctioned only days before it descended into the North Atlantic for its final, deadly dive.

Coast Guard officials noted at the start of the hearing that the submersible had not been independently reviewed, as is standard practice. That and Titan's unusual design subjected it to scrutiny in the undersea exploration community.

OceanGate, based in Washington state, suspended its operations after the implosion. The company has no full-time employees currently but has been represented by an attorney during the hearing.

During the submersible's final dive on June 18, 2023, the crew lost contact after an exchange of texts about Titan's depth and weight as it descended. The support ship Polar Prince then sent repeated messages asking if Titan could still see the ship on its onboard display.

One of the last messages from Titan's crew to Polar Prince before the submersible imploded stated, "all good here," according to a visual re-creation presented earlier in the hearing.

When the submersible was reported overdue, rescuers rushed ships, planes and other equipment to an area about 435 miles south of St. John's, Newfoundland. Wreckage of the Titan was subsequently found on the ocean floor about 330 yards off the bow of the Titanic, Coast Guard officials said. No one on board survived.

The Coast Guard last week revealed new images showing the remains of the submersible on the ocean floor more than 12,000 feet underwater.

OceanGate said it has been fully cooperating with the Coast Guard and NTSB investigations since they began. Titan had been making voyages to the Titanic wreckage site going back to 2021.

In addition to Rush, the implosion also killed veteran Titanic explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet; two members of a prominent Pakistani family, Shahzada Dawood and his 19-year-old son Suleman Dawood; and British adventurer Hamish Harding.

Last month, Nargeolet's family filed a $50 million  wrongful death lawsuit  against OceanGate. Known as "Mr. Titanic," Nargeolet participated in 37 dives to  the Titanic site,  the most of any diver in the world, according to the lawsuit.

Submersible expert who went on early Titan dive: 'OceanGate came very, very close to killing me'

A submersible expert said he heard cracking sounds during a deep-sea dive on a prototype of the Titan sub, a month before a crack was found in the vessel.

Karl Stanley, the owner of the Honduras-based deep-sea diving expedition company Roatan Institute of Deepsea Exploration, testified on Tuesday during the U.S. Coast Guard's hearing on the 2023 catastrophic implosion of OceanGate's Titan submersible that killed five people.

Stanley went on one of the first crewed dives of the first prototype of the submersible in April 2019 in the Bahamas. He, OceanGate co-founder and CEO Stockton Rush and two others went to 3,760 meters -- about the depth of the Titanic wreckage. Rush had previously taken two solo dives in the prototype hull to around 4,000 meters, according to log records shown during the hearing.

Stanley said as they went down, the prototype carbon-fiber hull was "making noises," and the cracking sounds "amplified" the deeper they went. He said Rush had warned them about the noises but they were still unnerving.

"I think nobody wanted to be the one to say they wanted to go up first," he said.

Stanley said he surmised that the cracking sound was a carbon fiber band "breaking." As they returned to the surface, he said there was a "grand finale of cracking sounds."

"I'm not a carbon fiber expert, but just thinking about it logically, the only way that you get a whole lot of more cracking when you're coming back up is that material degraded so much that it stored energy that was then released as the pressure was released," he said.

He said there were "plenty of issues" with the dive, including with the drop weights.

Stanley said he raised his concerns about the noises in emails to Rush following the dive, writing that it seemed like there was a defect, and advised Rush to "gain more experience to mitigate risk." His emails noted that Rush told him indirectly not to speak about the noises he heard on the dive. Stanley said his emails with Rush ultimately strained their relationship.

A month after the dive, a crack was found in the carbon-fiber hull prototype, and it was not used for any Titanic dives, according to the Coast Guard.

Stanley said Rush never told him about the crack and that he learned about it from a Wired article. He said he also didn't learn that the prototype hull had been struck by lightning prior to their dive until after the fact. He said he would not have gone on the dive if he had known that.

Stanely said when he first heard that OceanGate was making a carbon-fiber hull, he was "excited."

"In retrospect, there were a lot of red flags that now, after the implosion and learning more and putting different pieces of the puzzle together, start making sense and are kind of clues," he said.

In his final remarks to the investigators, Stanley said he believed Rush started OceanGate because he "had a desire to leave his mark on history."

"OceanGate came very, very close to killing me and had a severe impact on my business as well as an entire industry," he said.

'It's been a difficult year'

A former OceanGate employee who also testified on Tuesday got emotional while remembering the people killed in the June 2023 implosion of the Titan.

"I had the privilege of knowing the explorers whose lives were lost," Amber Bay, former OceanGate director of administration, said during the hearing. "There's not a day that passes that I don't think of them, their families and their loss. It's been a difficult year for them, for all of us."

Rush, French explorer Paul Henri Nargeolet, British businessman Hamish Harding, Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his 19-year-old son, Suleman, were killed when the Titan imploded during a deep-sea voyage to the Titanic wreckage.

Bay said she believes the teenager was the youngest person to ever dive on the Titan, and that there were "no true misgivings" about his age ahead of the dive.

"Stockton had spoke to the family directly on a few occasions and met with them personally," she said. "So there was no concerns once they had been spoken with and understood. Everyone understood and was ready and excited to dive."

Bay started working for OceanGate in December 2018. She said part of her duties included the care of the "mission specialists" -- what the company called those who paid to go on dives -- during expeditions.

She described a mission specialist, who paid $250,000 for the Titan dive, as someone who was "curious about deep-sea exploration" and understood that "this wasn't a luxury trip."

"As Stockton put it, there was no chocolate on the pillow," she said. "They were invited to be involved and take an active role as much as possible as they wanted to."

During his testimony, Stanley said the term mission specialist was "clearly a dodge of getting around U.S. regulations with passengers."

Towing concerns

Bay said she was present for all Titan missions in 2021 and 2022, as well as the first three in 2023 -- missing the fourth and fifth, which would turn out to be the last, due to a family obligation.

OceanGate utilized the Horizon Arctic as its support ship in 2021 and 2022, though the vessel was no longer available in 2023, so they started utilizing the Polar Prince, she said. The 2023 missions started earlier in the year than previous missions due to the Polar Prince's availability, she said.

Asked if she had any concerns about towing the Titan the 370 nautical miles to the Titanic wreck site, she said, "Certainly."

"I think anybody would have, you know, concerns that this was going to be more challenging and more difficult in some aspects," she said. "Stockton assured us that he was up for the challenge and the team was up for the challenge."

She noted differences in the weather and water conditions on the 2023 missions compared to previous years.

"The seas were much higher than earlier on, than I remember being on the Horizon Arctic," she said. "It was much colder. There's a lot of rain."

Asked if the Titan was ever damaged during the towing that year, she said she believed the vessel lost or damaged a fairing -- a plastic cover that goes over the sub, "just like a car bumper." She said on one or two occasions the platform also took on water and started to list.

Bay refutes prior witness testimony

A former OceanGate contractor who testified during the hearing last week, Antonella Wilby, told investigators about a conversation she had with Bay about a 2022 dive, during which passengers heard a loud bang as the Titan was ascending.

Wilby testified that when she brought up a customer's concerns about the loud bang to Bay, Bay told her, "You have a bad attitude. You don't have an explorer mindset. You know, we're innovative and we're cowboys, and a lot of people can't handle that."

Asked to explain those remarks on Tuesday, Bay refuted the testimony.

"I don't believe that either of those statements is exactly what I had said," she said.

MORE: Titan passenger said he understood risk if something went wrong in experimental sub: 'It wasn't supposed to be safe'

She said Wilby's concerns were "looked into and notated," though she had no knowledge of what she was specifically referencing.

Bay said she did not deal with safety concerns and would refer people to the head of engineering, the director of operations and Rush.

"I did ask her if she did have concerns, to bring those up to those particular people," Bay said.

She said she believed OceanGate staff felt comfortable raising safety concerns with Rush.

"I wasn't witness to those types of meetings, but I was witness to people saying, 'Oh yeah, I talked to Stockton about that today,'" she said.

OceanGate's financial problems

At the beginning of 2023, OceanGate's finances were "getting very tight," and employees were asked to have their paychecks deferred once, Bay said.

"We were looking to make ends meet, and if we were able to defer our paychecks, there was an offer that Stockton had derived -- I believe with an attorney or whomever -- that we could delay our paychecks and be paid a small amount of interest and recaptured at a specific time," she said.

She said she and Rush delayed their paychecks once.

MORE: OceanGate whistleblower says he had 'no confidence' in development of Titan sub

Phil Brooks, the former engineering director of OceanGate, testified on Monday that he left the company in February 2023 in part due to the financial issues.

"It was clear that the company was economically very stressed," he said.

OceanGate suspended all exploration and commercial operations after the deadly implosion.

The two-week hearing on the incident is scheduled to run through Friday.

OceanGate co-founder says he hopes submersible tragedy yields renewed interest in exploration

Carbon fiber was used because the company wanted a lightweight, less costly sub.

The co-founder of the company that owned the experimental submersible that imploded en route to the wreckage of the Titanic told a Coast Guard panel Monday he hoped the silver lining of the disaster would be that it inspires a renewed interest in exploration, including the deepest waters of the world's oceans.

“This can’t be the end of deep ocean exploration. This can’t be the end of deep-diving submersibles and I don’t believe that it will be,” said businessman Guillermo Sohnlein, who helped found OceanGate with Stockton Rush.

Sohnlein ultimately left the company before the Titan disaster in June 2023. Rush was among the five people who died when the submersible imploded. Though Sohnlein left the Washington company years ago, he spoke in defense of its efforts in the aftermath of the submersible’s implosion.

On Monday, he testified that the company wanted to create a fleet of four or five deep-diving submersibles capable of carrying five people to 6,000 meters (6,500 yards) deep. The plan for the company was to have no dedicated mothership — which would've lowered costs substantially, he said.

“We wanted to give humanity greater access to the ocean, specifically the deep ocean,” Sohnlein said.

Sohnlein testified that the company zeroed in on the use of carbon fiber for the doomed vessel because the company wanted a lightweight, less costly submersible that did not need to be tethered to a specific mother ship. He testified that the use of carbon fiber as “not a novel idea” and said “people have looked at that before.”

No existing submersible builders could meet the company’s requirements, necessitating the pivot to building its own subs, Sohnlein said. And he said the company worked closely with the Coast Guard during development.

Sohnlein said he had the opportunity to dive in Titan “many times” and he declined. He said his reasons included not wanting to take space away from potential customers. He said when Rush reached a point when it was “time to put a human in there,” he wanted to do it himself. Rush felt it was his design and said “if anything happens, I want it to impact me,” Sohnlein said.

The Coast Guard opened a public hearing earlier this month that is part of a high level investigation into the cause of the implosion. Some of the testimony has focused on the troubled nature of the company.

Earlier in the hearing , former OceanGate operations director David Lochridge said he frequently clashed with Rush and felt the company was committed only to making money. “The whole idea behind the company was to make money,” Lochridge testified. “There was very little in the way of science.”

Sohnlein said Monday that neither he nor Rush was ever “driven by tourism” and the idea of visiting the Titanic, which had already been explored by others, was not exciting to either of them.

But Lochridge and other witnesses painted a picture of a troubled company that was impatient to get its unconventionally designed craft into the water. The accident set off a worldwide debate about the future of private undersea exploration.

Phil Brooks, a former OceanGate engineering director who testified Monday, said economic issues with the company included that it was asking workers to forego paychecks for periods of time with the promises that they would be caught up in the future. The financial problems with the company seemed to affect safety decisions, he said.

“It was clear that the company was economically very stressed and as a result that they were making decisions and doing things that resulted in, I felt, that the safety was just being compromised way too much,” he said.

An earlier engineering director with the company testified last week that he felt pressured to get the vessel ready to dive and refused to pilot it for a journey several years earlier. Tony Nissen said Rush could be difficult to work for and was often very concerned with costs and project schedules.

Sohlein also testified Monday that he left the company in 2013 as the company transitioned to engineering, which he described as a bigger strength of Rush's than his. He said it was a “fairly easy decision” for Rush to take over the company, but it was more difficult to decide whether to stay on at all.

The hearing is expected to run through Friday and include more witnesses. Roy Thomas of the American Bureau of Shipping also testified Monday and detailed the challenges associated with carbon fiber as a material for submersibles. He said carbon fiber is "susceptible to fatigue failure under repeated external pressurization."

Coast Guard officials noted at the start of the hearing that the submersible had not been independently reviewed, as is standard practice. That and Titan’s unusual design subjected it to scrutiny in the undersea exploration community.

OceanGate, based in Washington state, suspended its operations after the implosion. The company has no full-time employees currently, but has been represented by an attorney during the hearing.

During the submersible’s final dive on June 18, 2023, the crew lost contact after an exchange of texts about Titan’s depth and weight as it descended. The support ship Polar Prince then sent repeated messages asking if Titan could still see the ship on its onboard display.

One of the last messages from Titan’s crew to Polar Prince before the submersible imploded stated, “all good here,” according to a visual re-creation presented earlier in the hearing.

When the submersible was reported overdue, rescuers rushed ships, planes and other equipment to an area about 435 miles (700 kilometers) south of St. John’s, Newfoundland. Wreckage of the Titan was subsequently found on the ocean floor about 330 yards (300 meters) off the bow of the Titanic, Coast Guard officials said. No one on board survived.

OceanGate said it has been fully cooperating with the Coast Guard and NTSB investigations since they began. Titan had been making voyages to the Titanic wreckage site going back to 2021.

Titans Named Landing Sport for Former No. 1 Pick

Evan massey | 9 hours ago.

Sep 15, 2024; Charlotte, North Carolina, USA; Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young (9) throws against the Los Angeles Chargers during the second half at Bank of America Stadium.

  • Tennessee Titans

The Tennessee Titans have a ton of question marks at the quarterback position right now. Will Levis could still be the team's quarterback of the future, but he has not done anything to prove that so far this year.

With that in mind, there have been rumblings about potential moves the Titans could make to replace him.

Bleacher Report recently took a look at some players who could be traded around the NFL. When it came to Carolina Panthers' former No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young, Tennessee was named as a potential trade suitor.

"The Titans could also be interested in the 23-year-old as a long-term QB play if second-year man Will Levis continues to struggle."

Making a move from Levis to Young certainly wouldn't make a ton of sense. Levis may be struggling, but Young has already been benched by the Panthers. However, if the Titans feel that they can develop him and help him reach his full potential, they could take a gamble.

Having Levis and Young on the same roster would push both young quarterbacks. That being said, the Carolina asking price would likely be far too high to make the trade for Young to simply compete with Levis.

Throughout the first 18 NFL games, Young has completed just 59.3 percent of his pass attempts for 3,122 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. He has also picked up 271 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

As for Levis, he has played in 12 career games, completing 61.0 percent of his passes for 2,387 yarsd, 12 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. Levis has recorded 143 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

The two quarterbacks have actually put up very similar numbers through their first season and a half in the NFL.

All of that being said, it will be interesting to see what happens with the Tennessee quarterback situation. If Levis can't get the ship righted and start playing better, the Titans could consider a change.

Young doesn't seem like a very likely option, but he's a name that could become available.
