Phuket itself is the largest island in Thailand and has its own international airport so you can fly in direct and be close to your yacht charter base very quickly. The four marinas on the island are on the east coast, and from these you can get out to the Similan Islands, Phi Phi islands and Phang Nga Bay.

Explore Phuket By Renting A Yacht

Phuket is in one of the most beautiful parts of Thailand. Off the west coast of the Malay Peninsula it is perfectly located for you to explore many of the other islands and mainland tourist hot spots, with the added advantage of often being able to moor up and enjoy the sunset when all the tourist boats have filled up and emptied the beaches while you spend the night.

Here are some suggestions where you might visit:

- Phang Nga Bay is the bay between Phuket and the Malay Peninsula. This is renowned for its limestone spires and jaw-dropping scenery, and much protected as a national park. The James Bond movie The Man With the Golden Gun was filmed here, as was Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith. You can even sail to 'James Bond Island'!

- Krabi is the mainland province to the east of Phuket and includes the major tourist destination of Ao Nang. Do try to get to Rai Leh Beach - a more refined tourist resort well away from the mad crowds of Ao Nang.

- The Phi Phi Islands have two sides to them - Phi Phi Island's Phi Phi Don's no limits nightlife on its sandy beaches and nearby Ko Phi Phi Lee where you will find the exquisitely beautiful Monkey Bay where monkeys come out of the forest to feed on crab and Maya Bay made famous in the Hollywood movie The Beach. This is all a protected national park.

- The Similan Islands and Surin Islands , northwest of Phuket on the Andaman Sea are a forgotten paradise that you will visit to enjoy nature at its best. Many reckon the scuba diving and snorkelling is some of the best in the world. This is a national park well worth the trouble of visiting on a luxury charter!

Suggested Sailing Routes From Phuket

On your bareboat charter or crewed yacht charter, there are a wide array of sailing destinations from Phuket. Here are two you can take on your luxury yacht charter.

7 days - Phang Nga Bay and Ko Phi Phi: Over seven days you can see the islands around Phuket. Heading for Phang Nga Bay on the first night, then Ko Hung, Ko Kai, and Ko Phi Phi, you will see some of the most beautiful sights of the Andaman Sea. The limestone cliffs and places like Maya Beach made famous by Hollywood on this island hopping adventure are sights you'll never forget.

10 days - Similan Islands and Surin Islands: Island hopping north up Thailand's west coast you will visit one of the best scuba diving locations in the world. There are no resorts or hotels ashore - kept as national parks they are unspoiled and left to nature. Most of the islands are uninhabited, so there will be the opportunity to drop anchor and have the beach to yourself. Did we say diving and snorkelling? Yes, thanks to the rare and endangered species of marine life that live here, you're likely to see fish that you'd never see even on other tropical island yacht charters.

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Phuket

Unlike Europe, the sailing season in the Thailand runs from November to April - perfect for a dose of winter sun. The winter monsoon is settled and you will encounter weather between 25-35 degrees C.

Within this period, between November to March you will find the winds are from the NE and rarely get over Force 4.

If you can get to Thailand outside of school holidays you will find the sailing weather at its best and the resorts less crowded. Could you consider doing a Thailand yacht charter early in the Southwest Monsoon? Though the SimilanIslands are out of reach (as is anything west of Phuket) it is quieter in May - July, though this is the beginning of the rainy season that intensifies in July and runs right through til October.

The Climate

North East Monsoon: Thanks to being on the Equator the winds in Thailand never get too strong in the sailing season. Expects winds of F2-4 from the NE and it to be generally dry.

Southwest Monsoon: This runs from May to October and is the rainy season in this part of the world. Between May and July, expect winds up to F6 and changeable, and rain anything from every afternoon (or none at all) to solidly for your two weeks. Between July and October this is storm season with cyclones hitting the country and rain being almost guaranteed.

What should I consider when hiring a Yacht or Boat?

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

What are the Marinas in Phuket?

There are four marinas in Phuket - Ao Po Grand Marina, Yacht Haven Phuket, Royal Phuket Marina and Phuket BoatLagoon. All four have large charter fleets and can accommodate superyachts of up to 80 metres.

When are the best times to hire a boat in Phuket?

It is possible to sail out of Phuket year round. While the best time is between November and February during the Northeast Monsoon, you can enjoy your sailing vacation from Phuket Island as late as May in the early stages of the southwest monsoon. You won't be able to sail to the Surin Islands or anything west of Phuket as the seas are exposed to the weather.

Do you have to pay a deposit when hiring a Yacht in Phuket?

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

What happens if my Yacht breaks down?

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

What should I think of before I hire a Yacht or Boat in Phuket?

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Dress for warm weather but do have something for tropical rains - light but waterproof.

What Qualifications Do I need to hire a boat or yacht?

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skipper on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

Master of Yachts Course – Be The Best!

The Master of Yachts course is an offshore recreational sailing certificate that is highly regarded and difficult to earn.  A  MoY has to have significant marine knowledge and an advanced practical skill, based on many years of marine experience. Few sailors hold this qualification and ISSA ensure the high standards, enshrined in this course.

Sailors with this certificate are qualified to skipper a sailing yacht up to 24 metres in length (78 feet) up to 150 miles offshore and in any weather conditions.  It is widely recognised qualification around the world and a real accomplishment – you can be proud the day that you earn this certificate. This credential marks an important point in your yachting career and your CV/resume looks far more attractive to charter companies and to other yachties. Ideally you are doing this course for your own personal development, but it also tells your friends, peers and charter companies that you know what you are doing.

The MoY Course appeals to those aspiring to command sailing yachts of up to 24 metres.  The syllabus is almost the same for ISSA  courses, as it is for IYT and RYA courses. SIA is run by Mike Downard who has held RYA Instructor qualifications as well as IYT Instructor Trainer qualifications over his career. Mike is currently the Instructor Trainer and Examiner/Consultant for ISSA in Asia and has developed ISSA IP with Rafal Kandar over the last three years.

Master of Yachts is an advanced level certification and is available in a 10-14 days program, combining shore based theory and practical hands-on techniques for a sailing Yacht and the YMO Examination.   You need at minimum, to have at least the ISSA Offshore Skipper or equivalent (RYA Coastal Master or IYT Yachtmaster Coastal) and probably 3-5 years of seatime, plus the properly logged and signed sea miles. Students enrolling in this course will be required to learn the IRPCS to a high standard prior to starting the course. Apps and YMO handbooks will be sent to candidates after enrollment. Pre -Course study is necessary and we recommend that you do this six months prior to doing the course,

We recommend that the STCW 2010 Basic Safety Training Course be completed by aspiring Skippers.  This is not mandatory, but is highly recommended.

The Master of Yachts course is a serious qualification that demonstrates a candidate has tested theoretical knowledge and practical yacht handling skills. Anyone applying for this advanced course should hold the ISSA Offshore Skipper or an RYA/IYT equivalent certification, as a pre requisite .

This is a high level course and we can accept only accomplished and knowledgeable yachtsmen and yachtswomen. Essentially the course refines their skills ready for the examiner. Students registering for this program ar strongly advised to do some pre-study. Once you are booked onto the course, we will send you the course materials and you will significantly increase the likelihood of passing the theory examinations if you start studying 4-6 months before the MoY Offshore course starts.

You will be examined on the final day of the course and if successful application will be made to ISSA for the award of a Master of Yachts certificate. A VHF radio operators certificate is also required, as is a medical. STCW Basic Safety Training is highly recommended .

This comprehensive high level shore based course, includes assessment papers and written examinations. Candidates are advised that a considerable amount of private study and varied cruising experience is required in addition to the formal instruction provided. We strongly advise you to sign up at least 6 months in advance of the course start date so we can send you our MoY course notes handbook, for revision purposes. (In just two weeks it is impossible to cover everything that a Yacht Master should know, understand and be capable of practising).

1. 50 days on board a yacht at sea as an active crew member. A day is defined as a period of 24 consecutive hours. Parts of a day may be included in this total, but a day is not invalidated by a candidate leaving the yacht for a few hours during a cruise. The term “at sea” is defined as being on a vessel outside of any harbour – natural or artificial – in which a cruising yacht could secure or anchor for a prolonged period of time.

2. Have logged 2,800 miles in a yacht while cruising at sea (power or sail). This mileage must be logged on genuine cruises or passages but not short day trips. At least 2,000 miles must have been completed on coastal voyages and not ocean crossings. It is important that the candidate has considerable time of actual vessel handling.

3. Thirty hours on watch at night underway as an active member of a yacht’s crew. For at least six hours of this night time experience, the candidate must have been acting as the vessel’s captain/watchleader. “Night,” in this context, is defined as the time between sunset and sunrise.

4. A current medical examination and a colour blindness eyesight examination , which allows the participant to safely perform the relevant duties on a yacht, including being able to see and distinguish lights and signals of other vessels and navigational marks in typical weather conditions without risk to him/herself, other crew members or the safe operation of the vessel.

5. A six-hour VHF Radio Operators course covering the general rules and procedures for the safe operation of a VHF marine radio.

Minimum sea time must have been met prior to the final examination.

What does the exam consist of?

Written theory examinations will occur during the course. The final examination is an oral and practical test on board a yacht. Candidates must demonstrate that they have sufficient ability to handle, dock, and anchor the boat with a required level of confidence. Candidates can expect to be examined on any subject contained within the syllabus and to be questioned on any of their yachting experience to date.

In the event that the examiner considers an examinee not to have achieved the required standards, a certificate will not be issued. In this case, a confidential report will be sent to the candidate outlining the reason or reasons for failure and suggesting remedial action that could lead to the successful completion of the course. Completion of the ISSA MoY Offshore course is not a guarantee of passing the examination and receiving your certificate.

Heaven on earth – point yamu by como, phuket, thailand.

To begin with, I’m not a huge fan of beach holiday. The thought of being trapped in a beach resort would send me into a frenzy panic. Is the town within reasonable distance? Are there things to do in the town? All my inner thoughts are surrounded with the notion of whether I can get to town. And when I found out that Point Yamu by COMO is about an hour’s drive to the Patong, where the nightlife of Phuket is, I was prepared that I might just go insane after my beach vacation.

Surprisingly, not only did I survive the beach vacation, I discover that the stay at Point Yamu by COMO is actually quite an enjoyable and relaxing experience. In my own words, 100% bliss.

Point Yamu by COMO is about 40 minutes’ drive from the Phuket International Airport. The drive from the airport to the resort is rather uneventful. Throughout the journey, there is nothing much to see except for thick vegetation and single-storey houses scattered along the road. At one point, I did wonder if the driver was going to abduct me. But when I arrived at the resort, the cool sea breeze just set my body and mind into this relaxation mood in no time.

The check in procedure was executed with such perfection that I could hardly find any fault with it. My partner and I were immediately ushered to the lounge to enjoy our welcome drink and freshen up with a damp face towel. The front desk staff came to verify some basic details and we were off to our Bay Suite on the top floor of the resort.

When the staff opened the door, my jaws nearly dropped. The view was simply awesome. The suite opens to a spectacular view of the Yamu Bay. Although I was there during the raining season, it was a beautiful day on the day of my check in.

Point Yamu is entirely decorated by the famed Italian architect, Paola Navone. The Bay Suite is decorated in this white and vibrant cobalt blue or lavender as in Como’s term, reminded me a lot of the Greek island, Santorini. The room is scented with this unmistakable frangance from the Como Shambhala range of toiletries. Of course, the Point Yamu by COMO uses only the luxurious products from Como Shambhala. While the view is awesome, it was the bathroom that created the wow factor. The bowl-shaped bathtub is so adorable and cute. I’m not a regular user of the bathtub but this one simply tells me that I have to use it at least once during the course of my stay at this gorgeous resort.

Since it was my birthday, the resort was kind to arrange for a birthday cake to be delivered to my suite upon my arrival. It was very nice and the cake was finished in record time.

The thing that really impresses me about the Point Yamu by COMO is the amount of details that they paid attention to. One good example is the bedroom slippers. In fact, all the hotels that I’ve stayed always placed a pair of man’s and woman’s bedroom slippers in the room. I was pleasantly surprised that the resort actually took notice of this and replaced the woman’s slippers with another man’s pair. I’m not sure whether it was just pure coincidence or planned. But this simple gesture scored the top marks from me.

As much as the suite is so inviting and comfortable to stay in, I wasted no time to explore this amazing resort. The Como Shambhala spa is located on the fourth level of the resort and it also houses a well-equipped gym. Within the spa, there is a shared outdoor jacuzzi on the balcony, which faces the Andaman Sea. There is a steam room in the respective changing rooms and the separate saunas are located near the outdoor jacuzzi. I’ve spent many hours at the spa balcony when the weather didn’t permit me to laze by the pool.

For the teenage children and younger kids, there are two different games rooms that are designed to meet their respective needs. There is also a lobby lounge where the adults can rest and relax over tea and board games.

There are two remarkable restaurants within the resort, Nahmyaa Thai Restaurant and La Sirena Italian Restaurant. During the low season, the Thai restaurant only serves dinner whereas the Italian restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Generally, the food is excellent and there is really nothing to complain about and it’s hard to find fault with them. Nevertheless, I will talk about the restaurants in separate reviews.

What I particularly like about Point Yamu by COMO is that the hotel management is concerned about the guests’ overall experience. Unlike other hotel chains, Point Yamu by COMO bothers to create different visual experiences at different corners within the hotel property. Every hallway has something different or unique about it and art installations are placed around the resort.

The resort even has a list of scheduled activities for those guests who are interested to participate in them. From the common island visit to the popular local cuisine cooking class, there is something for guest of every age.

Every afternoon, there is a pushcart that sells ice cream that is made on the spot using liquid nitrogen. How cool can this get?

Throughout my stay at Point Yamu by COMO, I remained in the resort and the thought of heading to the town never occurred to me. After four blissful days, my sanity is still intact but more importantly, I felt relaxed and recharged. The only regret that I had was that I didn’t stay for more days in this heavenly resort.
