Tall ship Avatar

The Avatar has changed hands on 3 November 2023. For André Hanzens it was time for something new after more than 35 years in the charter industry. And a new project is already underway: the construction of the classic sailing yacht Quadra. The Blaak family is the new owner of the Avatar and under the new name Ocean Sherpa the ship will embark on expedition trips to Greenland and Spitsbergen.

Started as a skipper on the Dutch inland waterways, André built his own two-masted schooner Twister between 1995-1998 and sailed with her on the Baltic Sea, near England, the Channel Islands and around the Canary Islands for 14 seasons. From 2010 to 2014, the construction of a new sailing ship followed, the topsail schooner Avatar, with which sailing trips were continued after the sale of the Twister in the Baltic Sea area, near England and the Channel Islands.

But as said, after 10 great seasons with the Avatar it is time for a new challenge. In 2020, we purchased the hull of a classic yacht based on the design of John Alden’s Lelanta II, and we started the construction of this classic yacht, which is to be named Quadra. The Quadra will embark on sailing trips with six passengers. First on the Baltic Sea and later also in other areas in Europe and eventually worldwide.

We have mixed feelings about the sale of the Avatar. On the one hand, it is hard to say goodbye to this beautiful ship and the many loyal customers with whom we have experienced such wonderful trips. On the other hand, it is nice to be able to focus fully on building the Quadra now, and to look forward to something new, literally expanding our horizons in the future. And, of course, we hope to maintain a connection with our customers, suppliers, and associates through this future ship too.

We also hope the same for the new owners of the Avatar. They will be offering fantastic trips in beautiful areas starting from 2024. With their enthusiasm and sympathy, they have convinced us to grant family Blaak a bright future with the Avatar. We wish them every success, fair winds and following seas!

And we sincerely thank you for the trust you have placed in us and for the many wonderful sailing trips we have shared together. For us, this is not a goodbye, but hope to meet you again in the future.

A new project: classic sailing yacht Quadra

In fall 2021 we have started the construction of the classic sailing yacht Quadra. The design is based on the John Alden schooner Lelanta II / Lelantina. The hull was built over 30 years ago but never completed and was purchased by us in 2020.

After completion of the construction, the Quadra will offer sailing trips to up to 6 guests plus a permanent crew. Her sailing area will be worldwide. First we will sail on the Baltic Sea, and then head towards Southern Europe. And a crossing of the Atlantic Ocean is also planned in future to explore the Caribbean, America and Canada.

Avatar becomes Ocean Sherpa

Under the new name ‘Ocean Sherpa,’ the ship will be a sailing basecamp for adventurers and sporty travellers worldwide. In 2024, the ship has been hired to sail with skiers and expedition members in Norway and around Spitsbergen and Greenland.

Edson’s Quadrants are made from cast Manganese Bronze or 356-T6 heat-treated Aluminum. Available in 8” through 36” radius sizes, the Edson Quadrant is effective whether mounted fore or aft of the rudderpost. The quadrants are machined to accept #618 Take-Up Eyes, making installation and adjustment of steering cables easy. All bearing surfaces are machined, a positive fit is assured by the Edson Capped Hub, and the clamping action allows installation without having to remove the rudder. Please read through EB380 , our installation worksheet for more details on each securement method.

Prior to ordering, Edson requires the measurement on the rudder post to be taken with digital calipers and be down one-thousandth of an inch (three decimal places i.e., Rudder post diameter reading 2.375-inches).

Edson’s Standard Quadrants 

Cast in Manganese Bronze or weight-saving Aluminum, in 18” and 24” radiuses, these quadrants are substantially proportioned to withstand the most severe steering strains and shocks. The #676 Quadrants are available to fit rudder posts up to 31⁄2”(8.9 cm) in diameter.

Edson’s Extra Large Bore Quadrants

 Designed for boats with larger-diameter rudderposts. Cast in both weight-saving Aluminum and Manganese Bronze with strengthening webs through the center section of the quadrant , these quadrants handle rudderposts from 3.5”(8.9 cm) to 6”(15.2 cm) in diameter.

Quadra Marine was founded by importing boats into the UK from America on the turn of the Millennium. A faster than expected uptake saw the company increasing the quantity of imports, and the we grew to display at the Southampton Boat Show . Taking on such brands as Saver, Ebbtide, Quicksilver and Bayliner, it was soon apparent that the business needed workshop to perform in house Servicing and Maintenance.  in 2004 our workshop opened, and grew from strength to strength. 2014 was a significant step for the business, when we moved to our current premises at Milford Marina . 2016 saw us join with Network Yacht Brokers and Yachts.co , to offer the largest and most comprehensive brokerage and maintenance company Milford Haven has seen. Our Engineers can now also be seen working offsite at Milford Boatyard, and further afield where required.  

Being a family run business , core values are important to us. That is why when you bring your boat to Quadra Marine, you become a part of the Quadra family.

THE LEGENDARY QUADRACONIC ® HULL by Huckins Yacht

The Huckins hull is a stable platform at all speeds and does not wallow. She rides at a constant 3½ degrees on plane without trim tabs and comes up on plane in 4 seconds. She comes up on plane at 11 knots and at that speed does not easily get knocked off. Most boats do not come up on plane until around 16 knots and are easily knocked off at that speed. Most Huckins are designed with a top speed of 30+ knots and a top cruising speed of 28 knots (Of course we can always design in more speed if desired) this gives Huckins a wide cruising range (11kts-28kts) on plane that allows you to adjust the speed of the boat to match the sea without digging or wallowing.

At rest, which is not often considered when talking about performance, she does not list when overloaded by too many people sitting or standing on one side of the boat. She also has the same stable feel when slowing down in the ocean: such as trolling while fishing.

One often talks about performance at higher speeds. The Huckins hull is designed for performance at all speeds. When she is cruising at displacement speeds she does not bow steer and at any speed you do not have to constantly adjust the helms wheel. As she comes up on plane she does not stick her nose up in the air before she settles down. She simply rises gracefully and easily to 3½ degrees and remains there. This gives you good and proper visibility at all times.

Because of her light weight construction and extremely efficient hull form she is the most fuel efficient yacht that you can ever ride on. She is as nimble as a ballet dancer yet designed to take any sea that you can throw at her. She deftly handles following seas in an ebb tide and does not shirk turning around in a sea without broaching then facing them head on with the power to ride over the wave and meet the next one. Her ability to handle all manner of seas allows those on board true confidence.

Quadra Marine have experienced and fully trained engineers operating from a large indoor workshop on Milford Marina, to offer a full range of services.

Services: Marine engine servicing & repairs, Lift out assistance, Wash & Antifoul/Coppercoat, Valets (wash, machine polishing, waxing, ceramic coatings), Hull fitting replacement, 12v Electrical installations, Fibreglass repairs, Boat trailer repairs, Launching & retrieving, and so much more.

The workshop is the largest and most sophisticated marine workshop in Milford Marina, fully fitted out with the most advanced and specialist tools for their engineers to expertly handle your requirements. The workshop includes a full height 3 tonne boat hoist, and the size of the workshop allows them to undertake most repairs indoors, giving them the ability to continue working away from the elements. Quadra Marine also have a boat trailer lift, and computer diagnostics software for Mercury, Mariner, Mercruiser, Suzuki and Evinrude E-Tec engines.

Quadra Marine engineers are trained and experienced to service and repair inboard and outboard engines including Volvo Penta, Mercruiser, Beta, Yanmar, Perkins, Bukh, Sole, Mercury, Mariner, Suzuki, Evinrude, Honda, Yamaha, Selva & many others.

Quadra Marine goes a step further still, we are Suppliers of new engines, a member of Network Yacht Brokers to provide high quality brokerage to Pembrokeshire, a Main dealer for various boat brands (Power and Sail), Sea Safe life jacket servicing drop off point, Chandlery sales, Boat vinyl name & stripe replacements etc!
