Yachts For Sale In Cape May

Located on the southern peninsular tip of New Jersey between Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, Cape May is the oldest seaside resort in America with historical roots going back to the 18th century. The entire city has been designated a National Historical Landmark for its well-preserved original Victorian buildings. Two miles of pristinely maintained beaches are lined with exquisite multi-storied Victorian-era houses, adding to Cape May’s resort charm. Visit the Emlen Physick Estate, a historic Victorian house and museum for an 1879 “slice of life.” Also of historical interest is the Harriet Tubman Museum commemorating the years she lived in Cape May during the 1850s, working in hotels and homes as a cook to fund her life’s mission to help slaves to freedom. In the heart of Cape May’s historical district, is the charming brick-paved Washington Street Mall, lined with boutiques, eateries, coffee, sweet treats, and other specialty shops. Cape May is also known for the USCG Training Center that is the only facility providing basic training for nationwide enlisted recruits.

Cape May is surrounded by protected wetland wildlife and natural areas. The Cape May peninsula and southern tip of New Jersey is one of the world’s greatest migratory bird paths with thousands flying in from all over the world, making Cape May one of the top birding sites in the USA. The Cape May Bird Observatory coordinates birding activities for the area, including the World Series of Birding held annually in May. Another major natural attraction is whale and dolphin watching. The Cape May Whale Watch Research Center, founded in 1987, is the original eco-tour operation, utilizing “Citizen Scientists” to assist Marine Naturalists with ongoing research and conservation education, with their observations. The Research Center Tours operate out of the South Jersey Marina.

The most common whale species sighted is the Humpback whale, especially the juveniles. The young whales are attracted to the abundant food along the Jersey Shore—herring, menhaden, and zooplankton, especially copepods, without having to compete with adult whales that travel further north to the Nova Scotia and New England feeding grounds. Humpback whales are listed as endangered in the State of New Jersey. Other whale species sighted are Fin whales, the second largest after the Blue whale and often seen with dolphin. Fin whales are an endangered US and NJ species. Minke whales are the smallest baleen whales and are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

They are fast moving and may enter bays and harbors. Minkes will often approach a boat; never feed or harass marine wildlife. The Northern Right whale is the most endangered of the large whale species in the world, with females being most vulnerable. Right whales migrate seasonally along the US east coast. Their primary feeding ground is off the New England coast. Dolphins are now common sights along the Jersey Shore from late spring to early fall. Common Atlantic/Bottlenose dolphin, Short-Beaked Common dolphin, Striped dolphin (known for roto-tailing), and Atlantic White-sided dolphin are some of the species sighted offshore.

Cape May “fishing fever” begins in mid-March. Whether fishing from land (piers, surf casting) or sea (coastal and offshore boats), EVERYONE FISHES IN CAPE MAY! The most popular and prized gamefish is the striped bass (striper) and landing a 28-inch or longer “keeper striper” will ensure bragging-rights for the season. Spring fishing season opens with weak fish, then other species as the water warms. Mackerel and herring are caught for bait during the summer months in pursuit of larger gamefish. In mid-June, sport fishermen fish the 100-fathom “canyon” edge of the Atlantic continental shelf for marlin, tuna, and shark. Considered a gentlemen’s sport, sponsored tournaments such as the Mid-Atlantic $500,000, attract multi-million-dollar sport fisher tournament yachts outfitted with the latest technology and electronics to get them on a trophy fish. Many assist the Billfish Foundation by tagging and releasing their catch. Some of the local full-service marinas that offer transient as well as seasonal slips are Cape May Marina, Utsch’s Marina, and Snug Harbor Marina.
