Place You Can Store Your Boat

Some people store their boats in the water all year long. This is usually considered an acceptable practice in temperate areas where winters are relatively mild, or if you completely winterize your boat  in its slip and then add an agitator (ice eater) to keep the water from freezing around the boat during the cold months of the year.

Dry Boat Storage

Dry outdoor boat storage is certainly a more popular option. It’s relatively safe and protective for the boat, and inexpensive compared to most alternatives. In popular boating areas there are also plenty of fenced lots used for boat storage in the off-season, and for boat trailer storage during the summer months.

Indoor boat storage is a more expensive option, however, it also offers the most protection for your boat. Unfortunately, unless you keep your boat in a covered “dry stack” facility (sometimes called a “boatel,” where the boats sit on huge racks inside of a covered building), it can be very difficult to find indoor boat storage. Unless, of course, you have your own garage the boat fits into—in that case, keeping your boat right there at home is a no-brainer. Assuming that’s not an option, however, that same question we asked earlier is sure to come up: “where is indoor boat storage near me?” But in this case it may be a much more difficult question to answer.

The exact cost of boat storage depends on two main factors: your location, and the size of your boat. Boat storage prices tend to reflect the local economy, so in areas with a low cost of living, the expense will be far less than in a high-rent district. And of course, just how much space your boat takes up has a huge impact on storage costs.

The range can go anywhere from a couple hundred dollars for a small, trailerable boat parked in a fenced field over the winter, to thousands of dollars for indoor boat storage, to tens of thousands for very large boats kept in a wet slip. As a very rough estimate you can use a figure of $50 per foot of boat for minimal indoor or covered boat storage costs, but in more expensive areas, it can cost as much as $200 per foot for a season—or even more. However, keep one other factor in mind. In most cases if you store your boat in an indoor dry stack facility, it lives there year-round. So if you pay for year-round storage you don’t have to worry about paying for a wet slip through the summer months, and your boat stays protected from the elements all year long. Conversely, if you store your boat permanently in a wet slip you won’t have to worry about finding and paying for winter storage separately. Remember, however, that there will still be yearly haul-out fees for maintenance.

One other detail that can affect storage costs is whether or not your boat is on a trailer. If it is, you can often pay a relatively low rate to leave the boat and trailer in a parking area at a local marina that has a boat ramp, year-round. Remember, however, that few marinas will launch and retrieve your boat for you, so you still need to own a tow vehicle capable of pulling the rig to the boat ramp and then back to its resting spot.

Advantages and Disadvantages of the Various Boat Storage Options

For slip holders storing a boat in the water year-round may be more convenient than pulling the boat for dry storage through the winter, but it does carry some risks. If, for example, your marina loses power and the agitator stops working, the hull could become frozen in place and ice damage can occur. So most boat owners opt for dry boat storage during the off-season, especially in parts of the nation with harsh winters. Slip holders who have a lift may also opt to store the boat in place on the lift through the winter. Also, remember that storing your boat in a marina usually comes with some perks. The How-To's Of Dry Rack Storage

Waterfront marinas are disappearing, but some marinas are using a storage solution that's been around since the 1950s: dry rack storage.

Florida, one of the biggest states affected by this trend, commissioned a two-year, $1.5 million study on the loss of boat slips and ramps. Why? Because in Tampa Bay, boat owners wait in quarter-mile lines to use the remaining ramps. In Daytona Beach, police officers help annoyed boaters "keep the cool" while waiting for ramps. And California isn't any better. They recently did a similar study and found there will be a need for 800 new boat ramps by 2020.

So what's a boater to do? Some marinas are using a storage solution that's been around since the 1950s: dry stack storage.

How Did Dry Rack Get Started?

Dry rack storage began in the 1950s when various marina owners realized they could make better use of storage space by vertically stacking light boats on racks with forklifts. The racks were homemade wooden structures and the forklifts were regular warehouse forklifts. This storage solution was ideal for year-round boating and lake marinas where light boats were stacked for winter storage.

In the 1970's the dry stack storage industry improved as manufacturers started building forklifts and racks designed specifically for the shape and weight of boats. These new forklifts had a "negative lift," a feature that allowed the forklift to lower a boat below ground level and launch it in the water. Also steel building manufacturers started constructing large steel barns to hold enclosed racks that were four, five, even six levels high.

In the 1980s and '90s these steel barns took on a more "aesthetic" look as buildings were combined with restaurants, boating supply stores, hotels, and, eventually, condominiums, where the rack space would be sold ("rackominiums") instead of rented.

How Are Dry Racks Designed?

There are three designs typical to dry stack storage, although this concept continues to develop:

Conventional Dry Stack Buildings

Often referred to as a "barn" since they are big steel structures, they have racks on either side of the building with an aisle in the center for the forklift. Racks can be either free-standing or rack-supported, where the racks are part of the support system for the roof in case of high wind conditions. Most dry stack buildings can handle boat sizes from small runabouts to mid-size boats (35-40 feet) while some of the newer buildings can handle much larger boats (like up to 80 feet)!

These aren't the wooden structure that housed your dad's mower. They are usually a Three-Sided shed, basically three walls and a roof, or a Roof-Covered shed, "back-to-back" three-sided buildings with the boats' bows facing each other in the center and the sides open for the forklifts to access the boats. Sheds tend to hold boats up to 36 feet in size.

Free-Standing Storage Rack Units

Each unit has columns that support boats three to four racks high. Some have roofs and most are adjustable to fit different boat sizes. These units can also be portable, easily picked up with a forklift and moved to various places on a marina's lot. These units usually hold smaller boats, some not able to hold boats more than 30 feet long.

How Is This Good For Me?

There are many benefits in using a dry rack storage facility:

• Ease of use. You call ahead to have your boat brought down and even fueled. Then you arrive, hop in, and go. When the day is over, you return to the marina, dock the boat in the designated area, and leave. The marina washes it down and puts it back up on the rack.
• May save money. Since you don't have a trailer, you're not spending money on gas, launch fees, or upkeep on the trailer. Also, because your boat isn't sitting in the water, you won't have to clean off the marine growth or bottom paint the hull every year.
• Keeps your boat in better shape. If your boat is sitting in a big steel barn and not constantly being bombarded by the sun's UV rays, you are lessening the possibility of gelcoat damage. However, keep in mind that if your boat is in a three-sided shed or a rack with just a roof, some sunlight might get on your boat.
• Good protection for your boat. Most buildings have security measures like electronic security systems to stop vandalism and outright boat theft. Many of the newer buildings have fire suppression systems from sprinklers and even synthetic fire retardant foam systems. Also, many buildings in hurricane-prone zones have been built according to local hurricane codes. If you keep your boat in a hurricane-prone area, check to see what kind of protection the rack facility offers.
• Provides alternatives to keeping a boat and trailer sitting in the driveway. Due to homeowner association by-laws or city ordinances, some small boat owners can't keep their boats in their driveways. In addition, dry stack storage is good for owners who find themselves being kicked out of marinas to make room for larger yachts.
• Environmentally better in some circumstances. According to Delaware State Parks' Indian River Marina, dry stack storage "Minimizes need for dredging, minimizes water quality and flushing concerns, and reduces the amount of contact time between pesticide-containing bottom paints and the water."

Of course, as with everything, there are some downsides. Most places only allow you one launch and retrieval per day. That launch time can get long if the dry stack is extremely busy that day. Also there usually isn't any place at the facility to park your boat in the water and use it overnight. Also, you can't just show up at the facility and tinker around on your boat. Most dry stacks don't allow boat owners to work on their boats in the facility.

Much like a regular marina, rental rates are based on length of stay (month, season, or annual), boat length, or sometimes a flat fee. Rates are obviously influenced by location and need. At the time this is written, Loggerhead Club & Marina of Riviera Beach, FL, charged $17 per foot/per month for the year while Delaware State Parks' Indian River Marina only charged $9 per foot/per month. Some places sell the rack slip as part of a membership to a yacht club or as if it were a piece of real estate like a condo. Sebastian River Yacht Club & Marina of Sebastian, FL was selling second and third level dry stack storage for $59,995 and bottom level for $69,995.

Beyond the initial rent (or purchase price), there can be additional charges. Boats over a certain height (nine feet, for example) or width (eight feet) might get an extra surcharge. Most marinas usually include washing the boat for you in the rent however some might charge extra for washing out the tanks or flushing the engine. In the case of a rack slip that you bought, there may be extra charges.

How Do I Pick The Right Place?

There are a few things to consider when picking the right facility. First, find out when it was built. If you are in Florida, look for places built in the last decade. The lessons of 1992's Hurricane Andrew were that Florida needed a uniform building code. So in 2002, the Florida Building Code was enacted, combining about 400 local codes from around the state. Ask for information about code compliance, in writing.

Next, see what kind of racks they offer. If you live in a year-round boating area with no worry of hurricanes, then a free-standing storage rack might do you just fine. If you want a little more protection, a three-side shed might be better. But if you live in a hurricane zone, your best bet might be having your boat in a steel barn.

Last but not least, find what kind of security and fire protection systems the building has. Ask if they lock the building when not bringing boats in and out.

How About Inland?

Recently, a few companies have taken the idea of dry rack storage out of the expensive and dwindling waterfront and placed it further inland. Most of the facilities are within 15 to 30 minutes from the water and cater to not only boats but RVs also. The idea is the same: you call ahead and the boat is ready for you. Only in this case, you will need to have a boat trailer and a vehicle to tow it to the water. These storage facilities store your boat on the trailer, sometimes sitting on racks three stacks high. They offer much of the same amenities: washing the boat down, fueling it before hand, and some even have a ship's store on the premises.

How About The Future?

The future can be glimpsed right now in Ft Lauderdale. Vertical Yacht Storage Systems took a rundown marina and turned it into a state-of-the-art bridge crane boat storage facility called Port Condos and Marina. For starters, the Vertical Yacht Storage System can handle any boat up to 80 feet or weighing 100,000 pounds, storing it in a climate controlled, dust free building that is said to be able to withstand up to 140 mile per hour winds. Haul and launch times are as short as six minutes. Also, aisle space is reduced up to 50 feet because instead of using forklifts, the system has an overhead electric bridge crane that picks up boats in a "one size fits all" cradle using a computer that "sees" with photo eyes, lasers, and proximity switches. This takes valet parking to a whole new level!

Storing your sailboat’s mast at our marina provides you with a level of protection offered nowhere else on the Great Lakes. Our indoor mast storage facility is one-of-a-kind. Have peace of mind knowing that your mast is safe and protected from the elements. Our facility is capable of holding masts and spars up to 110 feet in length. Indoor storage will extend the life of your mast and minimize servicing, saving you money.

Other mast storage options are available at our marina as well. Outside storage customers may choose to keep their mast stepped and store it on their boat. Or you may choose to unstep your mast and store it secured to the deck of your boat. This option is available to both inside and outside storage customers, provided that their boat is no more than 35 feet in length and that the mast does not extend more than 2 feet over each end of the boat when lowered.

Our secure facility can accommodate trailered boats up to 26 ft. long and 8.5 ft. wide. You will have 24/7 access to our yard so that you can come and go with ease. We offer exclusive access to our private launch ramp to our storage and summer boat parking customers. A season pass is $150 and will permit full use of our ramp all summer long. Actual Boat Storage Costs: Marina, Indoor, Outdoor, Dry Stacked

If boating season is over or you’re taking your boat out less frequently, you might be questioning about storing the boat at a boat storage place. There are several different types of storage that dictate how much it costs to store a Boat. First, let’s take a look at the average monthly boat storage costs.

On average, storing a boat costs around $10 to $20 per ft per month. But the price can vary from $5 to $50 per ft per month depending on some essential factors like the type of storage you want (indoor, outdoor, covered, etc.), duration (one season, full-year, etc.), seasonality, and the location.

A garage is an ideal place to store a boat. This will protect it from the elements and keep it at a relatively stable temperature. However, if you don’t have a garage, you can find accommodation at a reasonable price at indoor or outdoor self-storage facilities, dry-stacked storage, and at a marina.

Before choosing a storage option for your boat, there are some important considerations to check prior. Like the Security (how secure the storage is?), Access Hours (Can you access your boat whenever you want?), and Weather (if you’re in an area with harsh storms, storing your boat in an indoor unit is better).

So with indoor storage, outdoor storage, wet storage, and even covered boat storage space for boats, there’s something that will work for you . Below, we’ll walk through the detailed version for each storage option, along with its pros and cons.

At Marina – $5 to $30 per ft per month and up

On average, storing a boat in the marina costs $10/ft per month. But the price can vary from as low as $5/ft per month to as high as $30/ft per month or more depending on the location, season, and length of the boat. Also, these prices will vary drastically depending on shorter stays vs. longer stays.

The prices vary drastically depending on the location and the season mainly. Sometimes you can’t even find a spot or slip or berth to keep a boat in a particular marina you are looking at in summer, demanding you to pay more for the slip.

If you want to keep your boat ready to use any time of year, wet storage at a local marina might sound appealing. This means it’s already in the water and ready for you to clean, work on or take out for the day, making this a convenient option than other storage options.

Generally, they are four options to how you can store your boat in the marina: Wet open storage, wet covered storage, dry open storage (on the boat lift), and dry covered storage. However, every marina may not provide all those four options. The price also varies based on the option you choose, as shown in the below table.

Those are the average costs of storing a boat at a marina. Sometimes the price can vary mainly based on seasonality (peak time or offseason) and the boat length.

Pros Of Storing Boat At The Marina

• The essential benefit of storing the boat at the marina is you can take the boat right away from the water quickly, and you don’t have to worry about a boat trailer and its expenses.
• Storing the boat on a boat lift at the marina will keep the boat out of the water, making the boat less likely to get damaged by growth or barnacles , or corrosion.
• In some places storing the boat at the marina is inexpensive compared to other storage options such as dry-stacked storage and indoor or outdoor self-storage facility.

Cons Of Storing Boat At The Marina

• Most marinas charge by the foot. Length OverAll (LOA) is the boat’s total length, including the dingy or any other attached at the back (if you have one), increasing the boat’s length and cost.
• Storing the boat at a marina might be expensive in some places and depends on the season and the place.
• Bad weather and sunlight can damage the boat if it is not placed in a covered slip.
• Keeping the boat for a long time in the waters can cause many problems such as growth, barnacle, blisters, etc. So, it requires additional maintenance such as bottom paint and barrier coat to prevent barnacles or algae or corrosion on the boat hull.
• You can’t ensure the security of your boat. There is a high chance of boat damage due to bad weather or while docking.

At Indoor Self Storage Facility – $10 to $40 per ft per month

On average, storing a boat in an indoor self-storage facility costs $20/ft per month. But the price can vary from as low as $10/ft per month to as high as $40/ft per month or more depending on the length of the boat, seasonality, and the location.

The indoor self-storage facility would be an excellent storage option for your boat because it gives extra protection to the boats from sunlight and rain than outdoors, which eventually increases the cost as well.

However, if it is not located near the lake or shore, that makes it a less convenient option for boaters because they need to go near the storage first and then trailer the boat from the storage to the lake or shore, double work.

You need to store a boat on the trailer, or blocking is needed to store the boat at these indoor self-storage facilities. We will now see the pros and cons of storing a boat at an indoor self-storage facility.

Pros Of Storing Boat At Indoor Self Storage Facility

• An indoor self-storage facility will be completely closed like a warehouse, and it gives more protection for the boat from sunlight, rains, snow, etc.
• Most of the self-storage facilities will have CCTV’s to keep an eye on your boat to avoid any thefts.
• You can find self-storage facilities anywhere because they are many self-storage facilities in the country.

Cons Of Storing Boat At Indoor Self Storage Facility

• If the indoor self-storage facilities aren’t located near the marina, you might need to rent or borrow a trailer to take your boat from the indoor self-storage facility to the lake or shore.
• Storing the boat at indoor self-storage facilities is expensive in many places and depends on the time (seasonality).
• Some indoor self-storage facilities may be too small, height and length-wise, for your boat and trailer.

At Outdoor Self Storage Facility – $5 to $20 per ft per month

On average, storing a boat in an outdoor self-storage facility costs $10/ft per month. But the price can vary from as low as $5/ft per month to as high as $20/ft per month or more depending on the length of the boat, seasonality, and the location.

The outdoor self-storage facility is cheaper compared to an indoor self-storage facility. And it also gives less protection for your boat. So, if you live in an area where the weather is fairly mild throughout the year, outdoor self-storage is an affordable option.

You need to store a boat on the trailer, or blocking is needed to store the boat at these outdoor self-storage facilities. There is one more category in this storage category, which is covered outdoor storage . This stays between the indoor and outdoor storage in terms of cost and protection.

• Outdoor self-storage facilities are cheaper than storing the boat at a marina or dry-stacked storage.

Cons Of Storing Boat At Outdoor Self Storage Facility

• If the boat is kept at an outdoor self-storage facility, you may need to take extra care, such as covering the boat from the rain, snow, sunlight, etc.
• If the self-storage facilities aren’t located near the marina, you might need to rent or borrow a trailer to take your boat from the self-storage facility to the lake or shore.

Dry Stacked Storage – $10 to $30 per ft per month

On average, storing a boat at dry-stacked storage costs $20/ft per month. But the price can vary from as low as $10/ft per month to as high as $30/ft per month or more depending on the length of the boat, location, and seasonality.

Dry stacked storages are another storage option for boats, which became popular in the past 10 years, and mostly dry-stacked storages will be located near the shore or lake, making it convenient for the boaters.

You can see that in the above picture how the boats are kept in dry-stacked storage. They use forklifts to keep the boat on the top. Basically, there are two types of dry-stacked storages; open and closed ones.

Open dry-stacked storage can damage the boat from the sunlight and the rain if the boat isn’t covered properly. And open dry-stacked storage requires more maintenance (covering the boat) compared to the closed one since the boat is exposed to sunlight and rain.

Pros Of Storing Boat At Dry Stacked Storage

• Dry-stacked storages are safer than marinas because, at the marina, you store the boat in water, and barnacles or corrosions may form on the boat hull, or bad weather can cause any damage to the boat.
• People working at the dry-stacked storage will keep the boat in the water if you call them in advance, and they will remove the boat from the water. Meaning they will take care of the boat entirely by keeping the boat in the water and taking the boat out of the water.
• In dry-stacked storage, they will secure the boat properly using CCTV or some surveillance to avoid theft.

Cons Of Storing Boat At Dry Stacked Storage

• Generally, all dry-stacked storages will have timings. Meaning you may not be able to take the boat out of the dry-stacked storage whenever you want.
• Storing the boat at dry-stacked storage is expensive in some places.
• Some dry-stacked storage may limit the number of times you can take your boat out of the storage. If you exceed that limit, you may need to pay extra to take the boat out of the storage.
• If the dry-stacked storages aren’t located near the lake or sea, then you might need to rent or borrow a trailer to take your boat to the lake or sea.
• Mostly, all the dry-stacked storages are for small boats, not for big boats.
• You need to wait in a queue if many people are ahead of you on a busy day to take the boat out of the stack.

At Home – $0

Storing the boat at home (in the garage or drive) is an inexpensive option to store your boat than other storage options, and it will be the most accessible spot for your boat. However, if you don’t have a garage or outdoor space at home for a boat, you are left with indoor or outdoor self-storage facilities, dry-stacked storage, or a marina.

And a survey tells that more than 30% of the boats in the US are kept or stored at home than other storage options, such as dry-stacked, indoor or outdoor self-storage facilities, or at the marina. Mostly all small boaters keep their boats at home (in the garage or outside).

However, this might not apply for bigger boats around 25 ft and up because bigger boats can be a little more difficult to tow and store, especially if you’re a first-time boat owner. Trailering a big boat needs a big vehicle, and it is hard as well. So most big boats are kept either at the marina or at any other storage facility.

Pros Of Storing Boat At Home (In The Garage Or Driveway)

• Storing the boat at home is free of cost, and you can check the boat’s condition regularly and easily instead of going to the marina or storage places.
• You can go boating whenever you want. There are no time restrictions, such as in the case of storing at dry-stacked storages or indoor or outdoor self-storage facilities.
• Storing the boat on the blocks (AKA blocking) doesn’t require a trailer (but to bring the boat from the lake or shore requires one).

Cons Of Storing Boat At Home (In The Garage Or Driveway)

• Storing the boat outside at home may require extra care or maintenance for the boat , such as covering the boat properly to prevent any damages from rain or snow or sunlight and theft as well.
• If the boat is kept for a long time on a trailer without using it, the trailer needs to be appropriately maintained to prevent any problems, such as a flat tire.
• And you need to trailer the boat to the lake or sea to use it. Whereas storing the boat at the marina or dry-stacked doesn’t require trailering, they will keep it in the water if the storage is close to the waters.

The story about Gibson Dry Dock is the story of a man who could not find a boat yard that would allow him to work on his own boat. So he built one!

Robert L (Bob) Gibson was that man. Bob was born in Palatka and grew up on Anastasia Island where he learned to love boats and boating. He built his first sailboat at 16. His father owned the historic Gibson Boat House on River Street in Palatka. He married Palatka native, Sophie Elizabeth Howard Walton, whose relatives operated steamboats on the St Johns River.

When Bob retired as a pilot for Pan American Airways in 1968, Bob and Sophie bought 60 acres on the St Johns River, and Bob started work on developing his dream of a boatyard that allowed owners to do their own work. When Bob died in 1992, Sophie convinced Tom Kight (also a Palatka native) , to join her in the operation of the yard. Sadly, Sophie died in 2002. To this day Gibson Dry Dock is still owned and operated by Tom and the Gibson family. Boat owners are still able to work on their own boats.

After graduating from Cornell University with a degree in engineering, Bob, the founder had no job because of the great depression (1929 -1941). Bob then joined the Navy flight training program where he became one of the country’s first aircraft carrier pilots!

After leaving the Navy, Bob was hired by Pan American Airways to fly seaplanes, which were commonly referred to as “flying boats”.

As a pilot with Pan Am, Bob and Sophie’s growing family were stationed in Trinidad, San Francisco (where he flew China Clippers across the Pacific), Rio de Janeiro, and finally, in 1942 a home in Biscayne Bay in Miami. Once there, he and his two young sons took on the daunting task of building and completely outfitting a 31-foot Chris-Craft cruiser with berths for their family of six. It was a 2-year project. Every workday, Bob would rally his sons by declaring, come on boys “it’s back to the salt mines” (a reference to the Russian practice of forced labor in Siberian salt mines). Well, that name stuck! And today the “Salt Mine” resides at its home port in San Mateo, at Gibson Dry Dock! This is where Bob was able to finally work on his own boat.
