Then and now

The seafront of Cartagena in Colombia is the backdrop for two sailing vessels of different epochs and sharply contrasting character.

Against the sea wall  Galeon Bucanero , a replica of a Spanish galleon of the seventeenth century is totally at home against the fortifications of this historically significant Spanish port city.

In the foreground Chincogan 52  Sole currently circumnavigating the globe stops over en route to Panama and the Society Islands.

Over the years I've received many wonderful photos of our boats from around the world. This one is an absolute classic. Many thanks to Mike and Sarah Mason for the shot.

Catamarans and Trimarans

Catamaran and Trimaran Boat Plans make it a reality to build your own catamaran or trimaran. Multi-hulled sailing vessels are a special class of boat. A very different mind set is required when thinking about sailing a multi hull, let alone getting your head around building one.

There are some unique challenges building a multi-hull sail boat, the extra beam added by each hull for instance can create storage issues while under construction. Hartley boat plans make the build process straight forward for even amateur builders. However with all things considered, building a multi can be an amazing journey.

Wayne Barrett has been building boats for 50 years, many of them world renowned. His latest venture is a DIY trimaran kit that embodies his half-century of expertise and celebrates “the joy of building and sailing your own creation”.

Famed in multihull circles and the creator of high profile vessels such as ‘Trilogy’ and ‘Indian Chief’ designed by Tony Grainger, and ‘Traveller’, the 50-foot tri designed by Dick Newick, Barrett describes himself as “a little guy designing boats on the kitchen table in an apartment on the Gold Coast, with a nice view over the lake”.

He has built some “100 or so boats” over the years and his passion and prowess have inspired him to create the M80 trimaran, an 8-metre vessel designed with the home builder in mind; those with limited time or space, and some basic experience with hand tools.

The versatile M80 can be specced for cruising or racing and the larger 9-metre design will have a range enough to sail across the Atlantic.

“In 2021, I’m planning to sail the 8-metre boat up to The Whitsundays as a promotional exercise to showcase the vessel. It’s very manageable for single-handed sailing.”

The concept arose from Barrett’s belief that sailing should be within everybody’s reach.

“I’ve built quite a few complicated, high-performance multihulls over the years and I’m aware they consume time that’s way beyond what an amateur could devote to a build. I used the flat panel concept, adapted to tri design and put it out there for amateur or professional builders.

“A friend of mine I’ve been sailing with for 40 years needed a new modern Buccaneer 24, a plywood 24-foot Crowther around in 1966. I’ve built a few of them, and a B33, B40 and a Spindrift 37. I thought about it for a year or so, then did something about it.

The spiritual successor to the Crowther Buccaneer 24, the 24-ft ‘Mojo’, was originally designed with a central cockpit, a double bunk down aft and a galley and head forward, which I thought was a great concept. But I scrapped that idea and went with a conventional aft cockpit.”

The first boat, in Brazil, set sail just over three years ago and since then, Barrett has sold plans around the world.

“A mate of mine from Geelong, Andrew Johnson, is building one at Lightwave Yachts at Coomera on the Gold Coast with the guidance of Roger Overell. It’s well into the final stages and will be used for cruising. It’s made totally from carbon, so it’s light and strong.

“There’s another one being built in France, a 6-metre design being built in Melbourne and a 9-metre design close to completion in The Netherlands. I’ve sold 9-metre plans to Germany and one in Sydney, revised to be all flat panel, foam and round bilge, with aesthetics to suit that owner.”

The main attributes of the design that have such broad appeal are its simplicity and economical package.

“Initially the concept was built around plywood, which has been a common material for 100 years and most people are familiar with it,” explained Barrett. “The benefit of ply is that a guy can build it in his own shed, over time. But other than the 9-metre in The Netherlands, people are all keen on the foam and epoxy.

“Foam and epoxy is a bit more costly, but comparing the total price is attractive for an amateur builder. It can be built from CNC cut panels in a fraction of the time compared to some other options, alternatively you can build it from our easy to follow plan set for DuraKore, DuFlex or foam core kits.”

Barrett has worked with ATL Composites for the past 25 years on numerous projects, including the 9.2-metre ‘Trilogy’, which held the Aust Championship title for around 10 years, ‘Traveller’ and the 13-metre Gary Lidgard-designed cat ‘Saloon Bar’.

“I also built a 7.5-metre caravan which appeared on the ABC program, ‘New Inventors’ five or so years ago,” continued Barrett. “I used ATL Composites’ products, including foam and resins.

“ATL spent a lot of time scanning the surface of the moulds so we could get an accurate pattern for the shapes of the foam core. I built five of them, all custom designed and built, all traveling the country. It was a fantastic looking thing!

“ATL has always been fantastic to me, in their general support, timely supply of goods, always bending over backwards to help.”

For the M80 in build at Lightwave Yachts, the main shell structure, fore and side decks, and cabin sides were built with DuFLEX/foam panels cored with Divinycell H80 structural foam in a variety of thicknesses and reinforced with double bias E-Fibreglass skins.

The cabin top and floats were strip planked with DuFLEX H80 strips with a 450grm uni-directional on either side to achieve the compound shapes and then reinforced with additional laminates to complete the structure.

The project incorporated carbon fibre and E-fibreglass reinforcement, supplied by ATL, to provide stiffness and to achieve the weight specification for the project.

High performance KINETIX R246TX, a thixotropic epoxy, was used to laminate these reinforcements and WEST SYSTEM R105 and H206 was used for all bonding and coving, combined with WEST SYSTEM 413 Microfibre Blend and 411 Microsphere Blend powder modifiers to alter the consistency for the specific applications.

The M80 was faired with ATL’s unique Technifill XP which is a pre-filled epoxy fairing compound that is ultra lightweight and very easy to sand.

Getting started is straightforward, according to Barrett. “People buy the plans, complete with DXF files and they can have all the flat components cut out with CNC or jigsaw by hand”.

“If you have plenty of time, it’s cheap. An average handyman or woman, with basic experience with hand tools could put it together in their garage or workshop. In The Netherlands it’s being assembled under a tent to keep rain and snow out. Where there’s a will, there’s a way to boat the world over.”

There have been so many requests for a 2-seater version of the Slingshot 16 Trimaran that I decided to build one for myself and take really good notes. The (very satisfying) result is the "Tandem" version of the Slingshot 16.

The Tandem Slingshot 16 looks and sails a lot like the single-seater version, but shares not a single panel. It has a much longer cockpit (7-1/2 feet) and a bit more beam and rocker, so it accommodates up to 400 lbs of passengers and still is quick and nimble.

And as a special and unique feature of the Slingshot 16 Tandem tri, you also get full constriction plans and photos for my new tilt-up mast step. Now you can just stand in front of the boat, insert the mast into the step at a convenient 45-degree aggle, stant ip up vertical, and lock it in place. Much easier on the back!

So if you're looking for a quick little 2-seater boat that's comfortable, nimble, ultra-stable, super-fast to rig, gets you sailing in just 10 minutes, and will run circles around most other sailboats - you have just found it! The "Slingshot 16" trimaran will hit 14 mph, points higher than 45 degrees, and turns on a dime - all while you (and one companion, if you wish) sit comfortably in your seat, facing forward, with both hands free thanks to foot-pedal steering. She can be launched in 5" of water and sailed away - upwind - in just 7".

Thanks to a special moveable main seat, you can sit in the middle of the cockpit to balance the boat when sailing solo. Or, you can move your seat to the forward position and have lots of room for someone else to sit very comfortably behind you.

Many of the Slingshot 16's benefits over "simpler" hull designs are the result of its hydrodynamically superior 5-panel hull with a flat-bottom center panel, which planes much more easily than ordinary 3- or 4-panel hulls.

And if you'd like to see just how nimble and quick this little trimaran really is, here's a short video of the Slingshot 16 going 10-13 mph, and another short video demonstrating the joys of hands-free tacking - changing direction a full 180 degrees without touching anything but the steering foot pedals.

NOTE: The videos show the single-seater version, but the Slingshot 16 Tandem sails virtually identically.

Although I have 4 trimarans ready to sail (two 16-footers, a 19-footer, and a 24-footer), it's the Slingshot 16 that I always seem to grab when the urge to sail hits me. Although all these little tris are quick, nimble, dry, stable, and a blast to sail, Slingshot 16 just seems to put it all together in the most irresistible way.

Many sailors are intrigued or already bitten by the multihull bug, but not everyone is ready to put thousands of hours into building a boat, or piles of cash into buying boats now on the market. For those seeking to experience the pleasures of sailing flat and fast, a beach cat has been the usual way. But though exciting, those designs do tend to be very wet, have almost no storage, are often uncomfortable and have a tendency to flip with little warning. Today, from racing around the globe to the prestigious America's Cup, winning boats are often trimarans. A small trimaran like the W17 is an attractive alternative. The W17 has been designed not only for home construction at relatively low cost, but also to improve significantly on the attributes of a beach cat without many of the disadvantages. With my own designs I am looking for overall performance. By that I mean a blend of features that makes my boats a real pleasure to own and sail. First of all, I want the boats to perform efficiently. I also want them cost effective, comfortable and drier than their competitors and to provide a sailing satisfaction that brings the lucky owners home with big smiles on their faces. I am confident that the W17 is such a boat. Whether daysailing 3-4 or enjoying ultra-fast sailing for 1-2, this boat will change the way you think about small boat sailing. This boat folds easily to only 7′ 3″ (2.2 m) – less than most day catamarans – and can be trailed on a flat-bed trailer or parked on the sand. She is stable and roomy yet still moves with the ease and feel of a thoroughbred. She is designed with a rotating wingmast in mind; one that can be homebuilt with plans available as a free bonus to those who build the W17. And I'd wager that the W17 plans and build manual are more detailed than any previous 17-footer out there on the market! So take a read through my website and give a small trimaran a try. There is something extremely satisfying about building your own boat, as so many have learned. There are not many new designs out there that use marine plywood really efficiently. The combination of plywood, epoxy and fibreglass has proven itself as light, strong and durable.

Tracer 1500TRi

Introducing the new 1500tri, the first member of the new tracer series of performance cruising trimarans from schionning designs. designed to blend the performance of a trimaran with liveable interior accommodation and create a stable, aesthetically-pleasing cruising platform that can take you anywhere in the world..

Tracer 1500TRi Trimaran Exterior CAD Renders - SDI - Schionning Designs International

The 1500TRi exterior is a little different to many of the standard trimaran designs we've become accustomed to. Large spacious cockpit areas are located on either side of the cabin, with the helm stations positioned wide on the aft beam giving excellent visibility forward, as well as clear sight of sails and telltales. Lines run aft to the helms with winches and sail controls mounted close by for ease of operation. The large cockpit areas will be fantastic for swimming, sunbathing, storing dinghies & equipment plus just a great spot while underway.

A 19 metre mast can be rotating carbon or a standard alloy option, but with the performance aspect of this design carbon is recommended. she has fixed rudders on the floats, however this will not be an issue and she will still be able to beach easily. kick-up rudders are an option if desired and depending on your intended use for the boat. a single 30-40hp diesel is the recommended motor option., contact us for more info, exterior cad.

Are you ready to put some speed into your race boat? Sick of getting beaten each season?

Here are a few speed tips to put you in front of the pack.

First, what are the three main physics considerations in Raingutter Regatta racing? Weight, Hydrodynamics, and Aerodynamics. Second, keep in mind the rules of your organization, you may be limited by how much you can modify. Third, practice blowing before race day.

  • Weight: Trim excess weight off everything and be careful how much you add like decorations and paint. The plastic hull can be trimmed quite a lot, cut the nose, sand off the bottom, cut out the cabin, cutoff as much of the outriggers as possible while remaining legal. Use a very light coat of paint. The metal screws may be cutoff some if rules allow. The balsa pontoons must be shaped and sanded, just be careful not to take too much off the top because the hull will sit too low and drag in the water (thus the vertical extensions added to our boat, lessons learned). Also, consider hollowing out the pontoons but this is very tricky and any holes will need to be covered with lightweight waterproof material. The mast diameter should be sanded thin as thin as possible except for the bottom part which fastens in the hole in the hull. The mast length cannot be shortened. The sail can be trimmed (more on that in Aerodynamics section) to save weight.
  • Hydrodynamics: Contrary to popular belief, the balsa pontoons should not have a V-shaped keel. Instead, they should be flat on the bottom more like a waterski, rounded up bow of course. You want the boat to rise up out of the water and skim the surface. A knife like bow with a V-shaped keel will only plow through the water slowly. The stern of each pontoon should have a slight taper. After the pontoons are initially shaped, they are temporarily screwed to the hull to check fit. Be sure they are completely straight and parallel to each other. Place the boat on a smooth flat surface like a table top and gently see if it rocks side to side or fore and aft. It should not rock, but if it does, place sandpaper on the flat surface and gently sand the bottom to make it even. Next, remove the pontoons and use super fine sandpaper (400 grit at least) to smooth all the surfaces. Before removing note their position port or starboard so they will be relocated in the same place. In order to save weight, we used a light coat of stain instead of paint and then applied clear waterproof polyurethane finish. Once dry, use a synthetic car wax for the final finish. This will repel water. Then screw the pontoons back on the hull in the same position as when removed.
  • Aerodynamics: The traditional sail design is out the window. It’s bulky and not very aerodynamic, it acts more like a brake. Try rolling up the sail to make a cone or rocket nozzle shape. Not only is this aerodynamic in the front, but all the air blown into it has to come directly out the back, no air is wasted out the sides. This will conserve energy and focus the reaction force forward. Roll the plastic sail material to make a cone and using a sharp hobby knife cut small X slots opposite each other where the mast will go through and using a pen, mark the excess plastic. Unroll the sail and cut the excess plastic. Roll up again and use tape to hold edges together. Insert the mast into the hull firmly, then instal the sail onto the mast with pointy end forward, adjust the sail so it is just a little bit above the hull. Use plastic glue to fasten sail to mast. Be sure the sail is held securely to the mast or the sail may spin and cause lots of frustration on race day.

When everything is set up correctly, your boat should literally jump out of the water and shoot down the raingutter in 2 or 3 breaths maximum!

Especially noteworthy is the Catri 25, a stable yet wildly fast foiling trimaran with accommodations for up to 6 people. With profiles optimized for speeds of 25+ knots when foiling, this is no beginner’s sailboat. The special attention paid to stability in the foil design allows the Catri to be a single sailor vessel, even at foiling speed, with no special physical abilities. Whether you’re taking a small crew for longer rides at shuddering speeds or bringing the whole family along for a shorter, but still thrilling sail, the Catri is truly one of a kind.

Designed to offer maximum pleasure with minimum hassle, all models of Astus trimarans are fast to set up, quick on the water, inherently stable, and always a joy to sail. Their outriggers are mounted on telescopic tubes for easy stowage and towing, and can even be extended and retracted on the water for access to narrow passageways and monohull slips in marinas. With models in all sizes and price points, Astus trimarans are a great option for any sailor.

Great for beginners and adventurers alike, the   Hobie Mirage Adventure Island   series is nothing if not just plain fun. With the option to use as a kayak or as a very basic trimaran, the Hobie is transportable, versatile, unintimidating, lightweight, and wonderfully affordable. The pedal system known as “Mirage Drive” allows a person to pedal the kayak using their legs for an extra kick of movement in slow winds. Amas tuck close to the main hull for docking or car-topping, adding serious ease and convenience to the exhilarating experience of the Hobie.

Best known for its use in camp cruising excursions, the   Sea Pearl   offers a roomy main hull and particular ability to sail in very shallow waters, making beaching and launching a breeze. The lightweight Sea Pearl trimaran is easy to tow, and the larger-than-expected cabin opens this vessel up for overnight adventures with plenty of storage space. The simple design makes the Sea Pearl notoriously low maintenance, and the ease it takes to rig and sail it add to the overall delight of owning this boat.

Quick, lightweight, roomy, and trailerable,   Farrier trimarans   are made for versatility to fit every sailor’s needs. Different Farrier models are available in plan or kit boat form for those who appreciate building their boat themselves, but of course, also as the full production sail-away boat for the rest of us. Single-handed rigging and launching takes under 10 minutes from start to finish, minimizing hassle and getting you on the water fast. All non-racing Farrier designs use a minimum wind capsize speed of 30 knots or more to ensure safety for all those aboard. Add the roomy cabin and high speed capabilities to the equation and you’ve got a boat that is great fun for everyone.

The SeaCart trimaran performs as brilliantly off the water as it does on with its super-light and efficient harbor folding system, making light work of trailering. Notoriously easy to manage and maintain, the SeaCart 26 One Design is the ultimate day racing trimaran, designed for both course and inshore/coastal distance racing. Absolutely worth the international buzz it has garnered, the SeaCart is a thrill from beginning to end.

A high performance racer class, the   Multi 23   is a lightweight, powerful trimaran known for its wicked speed of up to 25 knots. Multi trimarans of both available configurations were designed to give beach cat thrills and speed without any of the stability or seaworthy concerns. Open ocean sailing is no issue for the Multi’s big bows, which do their job to keep her stable. Built for sailors with a need for speed, the Multi makes a perfect weekend boat for racers, especially those with a taste for boat camping.

Another dual outrigger sailing kayak/canoe design,   the Triak trimaran   was designed to be effortless and fun, especially for beginners. Paddle the kayak with sails furled, use the foot pedals for an extra kick of momentum, or sail with just the mainsail – the only boat in its class to feature an asymmetrical spinnaker – for exhilarating speeds and a blast on the water. Car-top the Triak anywhere for a quick sail or plan for a week long expedition, but always count on having a great time on this easy little boat.

Discovery 20 Trimaran

See  Discovery 21 .

The Discovery 20 trimaran is a fast, fun daysailer with the potential to be a camper/cruiser for the adventurous. The D 20 design has been updated as an exciting and powerful new daysailer. It is available as a kit or a complete boat. This design is intended for enjoyable day sailing, although there is space below deck for camping gear. There is a 7' by 7' cockpit that is roomy for 4. You sit upright, with a backrest, not sprawled on a trampoline. My 75 year old mother-in-law found the boat very comfortable. The D-20 is quite fast; the all up weight of the boat is 527 pounds. She utilizes a daggerboard, a rotating aluminum mast and streamlined crossbeams. Construction is wood/epoxy/glass composite.

I really never appreciated how fast the Discovey is until about 10 years after she was designed when I raced mine in a Wednesday night yacht club series against a new Newick 24' trimaran (longer, wider, taller rig, new laminate sails). The other boat was sailed by a very experienced sailor and I was expecting to get my butt kicked. During the first upwind leg (in about 8 knots breeze) the Discovery 20 blew everything away, including a fleet of Etchells. I was so impressed I hove to at the weather mark and waited for the other tri to catch up so that I could get a better comparison on the down wind leg (he had a spinnaker I didn't). As expected, I lost some ground here but not really that much, and I was able to get it all back on the next upwind leg.

UGears Trimaran Merihobus

UGears Mechanical Model Trimaran Merihobus Boat

Product Description

Whether you’re already an avid sailor or just dream of taking to the open water, the UGears Trimaran Merihobus allows you to bring your love of boats alive even when you’re landlocked. Model builders who are both advanced or growing their skills will find a great experience awaiting them as they embark on their ship-building journey with this trimaran sailboat.

Anyone who appreciates the complexity, creativity, craftsmanship, and skill that goes into a great build kit will immediately recognize the quality provided by this one-of-a-kind project set. The boat itself comes together to form a striking finished product. This is not only because of the model’s realistic and exquisite design but also because it all starts with natural wooden pieces precisely cut from high-grade and sturdy plywood.

While your skill and ingenuity will be on full display as you construct this UGears sailboat, the kit helps to make your building project a stress-free success thanks to clear and easy-to-understand instructions that are conveniently provided in 11 different languages: English, Spanish, French, Russian, German, Italian, Chinese, Polish, Korean, Ukrainian and Turkish. The lure and excitement of a new model-building set are hard to ignore for a dedicated hobbyist, and the Trimaran Merihobus allows for getting started immediately. The pieces have been expertly cut so they’re ready to go, and your new kit requires no special tools, harmful chemicals, or glues to complete the assembly. The model boat set is complete with color-coded templates to make the building process simple and incredibly easy to follow.

You’re sure to enjoy the beautiful nautical details of this realistic trimaran model in miniature. The boat’s hulls, frames, rigging, and bulkheads are on full display so that once completed, the skeleton-style trimaran can be viewed and appreciated in its full glory. The realistic details of the sailboat are startling and impressive to take in, but the mechanical components are truly what set the UGears model ship apart from others.

Connecting the stern master wheel and the ship’s pontoons, sturdy ropes help to steer the trimaran kit with the rear rudder blade. Either take in both the mast’s fore staysail and mainsail or let them out for a look that conveys the sailboat is ready for a day of adventuring at sea. A simple pull of a lever operates the ship’s sail booms. The boat’s rigging is comprised of a thin, but strong, threading in white that keeps the look of the model clean and free of unnecessary distractions.

The Trimaran Merihobus allows you to put your own stamp of creativity on your project as the finishing touch is a flag you can design yourself; it’s simple when you use one of the included templates. The ship’s hoists and winch allow you to raise your vessel’s flag and prepare it for adventure.
