Weather conditions in the Sporades are very favourable for a sailing holiday from Skiathos. Afternoon breezes Force 3-5 from the north-east give good sailing from mid-morning to early evening. In July and August the meltemi can bring stronger winds Force 5-6, but all the islands have good shelter. Summer temperatures reach 27-29ºC.
We have rated this destination a 'Level 2' (levels info) and you will need an ICC qualification for bareboat charters from Skiathos.
For those wanting more support or who are looking for more of a social holiday then why not take a look at our Sporades flotilla holidays.
You can see all of the bases we offer in Greece along with the level ratings here so that you can find the most suitable destination for you. If you are at all unsure about a destination then please get in touch and our sales team will be more than happy to make their recommendations for you.
Flights to skiathos.
easyJet and Jet2 operate direct flights to Skiathos from London Gatwick and Stansted on Saturdays for the majority of bareboat charters. TUI and Jet2 also have direct flights to Skiathos from London Gatwick, Birmingham, Manchester and Nottingham (East Midlands) on Fridays and Sundays but as most bareboat charters run Saturday-Saturday you can choose to spend some time on land either side of your charter. British Airways also have direct flights to Skiathos from London City on Fridays during the high season.
There is no direct service to Volos from the UK so the nearest airport is Thessaloniki which has regular direct flights with easyJet , Ryanair and Jet2 .
The transfer time from Skiathos airport to the harbour is only 5 minutes so it usually works out better to simply jump in a taxi when you arrive. The transfer time from Thessaloniki Airport to Volos harbour is 2.5 hours. You can also fly to Athens but the transfer time is 3.5-4 hours.

We have just landed in what appears to be the middle of a military base. Looking out of the airplane window we see a lot of decommissioned helicopters and jets. We are in Volos airport and it feels a little like landing in Greece 20 years ago, yet Volos is the 6th biggest city in modern-day Greece.
Our taxi transfer takes us on service roads before joining the main road and heading into town and to the base, which is in the main harbour at the centre of town. The charter office is on a small pedestrian street just behind the harbour and staff are awaiting our arrival with cold mineral water and fresh fruit. We board our yacht for the week, a 2016 model Hanse 505, receiving a technical briefing from the local technician. The base manager then shares information about the local area and his tips for where to visit.
The town of Volos itself is bustling with locals. A busy port town with sailing steeped in its history. The town’s symbol is of the Argos, the Argonauts legendary ship from 1600BC. We decide to enjoy our prime position in the harbour by taking in the promenade and exploring the town.
Once we are in the back streets we find a fantastic meze and tsipouro restaurant full of locals. We are the only tourists there and it is packed! Luckily, the staff squeeze us in and we enjoy never-ending courses of local seafood and traditional dishes alongside a couple of glasses of tsipouro (a strong traditional distilled Greek spirit). We discover most tsipouro tavernas involve simply ordering a drink and a selection of meze appears with it, so as long as you keep drinking, the meze will keep arriving! It is fantastic, very reasonably priced, and a great first night in Volos!
Our provisioning is delivered by the local supermarket so once it has been stowed we get underway. The sun is shining and we have glorious late season temperatures between 22-25 celsius with a steady breeze blowing. This area is known for its consistent winds as the bay is surrounded by hills and we can see Mount Pelion looming in the distance. The wind is blowing over our port stern so once we are outside the harbour walls, we get the sails out and enjoy a leisurely broad reach at 5 knots towards the middle of the Pagasetic gulf.
We sail to Pythos bay on the small island of Trikeri. There are just two other boats in the anchorage so we can happily drop the hook in the middle of the bay and swing freely. The water is aquamarine blue so in go the paddle boards and out come the snorkels. We enjoy a couple of hours of sunshine, paddleboarding, swimming and lunch before setting sail for the town of Agia Kyriakis. There is a small quay right in front of the two fish restaurants. It is a stern too mooring using the anchor and the restaurant staff are happy to help take our lines. They must have just received a good catch as octopus can be seen hanging around the veranda of the restaurant and the chef is on the end of the quay descaling a large fish. We stick a pin with our boat name in the next fish and pick a table right on the waterfront overlooking the channel. What a great way to start our trip around the Volos gulf.
Today we are up with the sunshine to explore Agia Kyriakis. We find a couple of pretty beaches complete with palm umbrellas and fresh-water showers so we seize the opportunity of a morning swim. Walking around the harbour we discover a local products store selling honey from the nearby hills, perfect for our breakfast. Whilst out walking, a man comes out of his house to speak to us. He is English and has been living here for 20 years. Rarely hearing English voices in the area, he welcomes a chat and gives us some great tips for the best tsipouro restaurants in the area.
It seems a shame to leave this tiny port town but we are heading out to Skopelos island today. There is a lot of wind predicted so we are aiming for the bay of Panormos, known for its great shelter. Heading into the channel there is plenty of wind so we reef our sails and a series of tacks gets us set on a close haul towards Skopelos. We are prepared for larger swells between Skiathos and Skopelos, so have an exhilarating sail in between the islands.
Once in the shadow of Skopelos’ hills we can feel the wind start to drop and the sea start to calm as we navigate into the southeast side of the bay to our spot for the night. We drop anchor and take long line to the rocks ashore with a spring for good measure, knowing the winds are due to come in the night. There is a lovely sandy beach in the corner of Panormos so we tender over to enjoy the last of the sunshine on the sand and then make our way to one of the beach tavernas for dinner.
As predicted, there is quite a lot of wind so we were glad of our long lines and spring line last night. We head carefully out of Panormos to see what the conditions are like. The swell is substantial and the winds are hitting 30 knots plus, so after getting the sails out we decide to have an easy day making our passage downwind on just a reefed genoa to the tiny village of Agnontas. The small quay should be sheltered from the winds and swell located at the bottom corner of Skopelos island.
After the daily ferry has departed we come alongside the quay where there are four other boats also sheltering from the wind. Once we are safely moored up the sun comes out and a tiny café behind the beach opens for an Aperol spritz in the sunshine. We are the only people on the beach for the afternoon as we enjoy the mid-20s temperatures in October and a hiatus from the wind.
There is a wonderful seafood restaurant at the end of the quay where we try some local octopus, homemade whipped taramasalata and other beautiful traditional dishes, alongside some excellent local wine.
The wind has dropped a little today so after topping up the water tanks we set sail for the island of Skiathos. Once we are out of the shadow of the island of Skopelos, we need to reef the sails in 20-25 knots of wind blowing on the starboard beam which makes for a fabulous beam reach sail over to Skiathos.
We have heard how busy Koukounaries beach can be in the peak season but by sailing in October we are able to enjoy the bay minus the crowds. Koukounari is the Greek word for pine trees, which line the shore of this huge anchorage. We anchor on the sandy bottom with depths of 5-7m, sitting comfortably facing the beach. There are only three other boats in the bay and while we can see sun beds on the long expanse of sand, there are very few people - what a treat!
We take the dinghy ashore, tie up in the tiny harbour and then enjoy an ice cream on the quiet beach. Before the sun sets, we head for a walk around Lake Strofila, which sits just behind the beach, to see some of the local bird life and wetlands. We also find a reasonably sized supermarket to stock up on a few supplies.
Dinner tonight is a short walk to one of the roads behind the beach where we find a fantastic traditional taverna somewhat strangely called ‘The Big Bad Wolf’. We all tuck into hearty Stifado, Kleftiko and Moussaka enjoying some classic Greek hospitality from the manager.
We are looking forward to returning to the tiny island of Trikeri but this time we will stay overnight in the port. This will be our last stop before heading back to Volos town. We sail down the channel towards the gulf with many other boats which all look to be heading in the same direction. The sails are set on a broad reach with one reef, hitting a steady 7.5-8 knots and managing the gusts coming over the hills. At the entrance to the gulf, we can see the little green island of Trikeri and a series of tacks gets us towards the port.
A restaurant has been recommended to us so we have booked a berth and a table for the evening since the owner has a small quay that holds just three boats. It’s a stern too with anchor on to the very end of his little quay. We have time for a walk before dinner so head up the hill towards the very top and the huge old monastery. There aren’t any vehicles on the island so it is lovely to just follow the paths amongst the olive trees until we’re at the top of the hill with beautiful views of the gulf. Then it’s back down the hill to the taverna for a fish dinner on the edge of the harbour.
It is time to return to base today. As we head out of Trikeri to go around the island and into the gulf, the wind immediately picks up and we have 20 knots blowing again so the sails come out and it's time for some fun. We take our time sailing in the gulf and enjoying a last sail before heading into port.
Anchoring on the northern side of the gulf, just outside of Volos, we have a late lunch and one last swim before heading inside the harbour walls. Once we have paid for our 20 litres of fuel (it has definitely been a week of non-stop sailing!) we navigate to the quay where base staff are waiting to assist with our mooring for the last time. It is a little windy still so the staff have got their work cut out for them, but with a little patience we are in safely and there is still time for one last G&T on board whilst watching a beautiful sunset over the harbour wall.

Sporades area in the northwest Aegean Sea is a well-known yacht charter destination in Greece. The archipelago consists of 24 islands of which 4 are permanently inhabited . There are numerous small coves and beaches ideal for anchoring a yacht and enjoying the crystal-clear sea. This area is great for sailing lovers, the ones who love to roll down their sails and experience the local winds.
The Sporades are located near Volos, right off the Greek coast. The city of Volos offers many interesting locations to explore at the start of your journey. Many sailors travel to the four main Sporades islands with some stops on smaller uninhabited islands. The biggest island, Skiathos , can be used as a starting point for your bareboat or skippered yacht charter as well. The island has an airport with regular flights from Europe .
Skiathos town is the island's capital with nice beaches nearby. There are some small islets across Skiathos town; Margos, Tsougkrias and Tsogriaki. The northern part offers more challenging sailing due to stronger winds .
Skopelos is another big island with a sheltered southeast coast and an exposed northwest coast. The main capital is Skopelos town with charming small alleys and local shops. Alonissos is another island in the archipelago. It has the last colony of monk seals. The main port is Patitiri, a small port often crowded with sailboats.
The easiest way to arrive is via Volos airport. Charter your yacht in the Gulf of Volos , whose gentle winds and magnificent scenery make for a perfect sailing holiday. From there you can sail to the Sporades, an archipelago on the east coast, consisting of 24 islands, among which Skiathos is the most interesting and worth exploring. There is also an option to arrive at Skiathos by plane and rent a boat there .
The high season is July and August, but the weather is ok from April till November. The whole area of Sporades is highly influenced by strong meltemi winds . Sailing conditions are recommended for experienced sailors and sailors who want adventurous sailing conditions. Beaches are on the west coast, with Steni Vala as one of the most beautiful. Skyros is a more distant island, with beaches in the south and southwest part of the island. Some of the beaches worth visiting are Tristomou, Kolympiada and Renes . Linaria is a port on the island with fuel and water, also offering some interesting taverns.
There are numerous interesting locations on Sporades . Each of the four islands offers many fantastic spots for exploration aboard a charter yacht.
Skiathos is one of the bigger islands offering a big harbour and busy nightlife. You can visit Kastro, the ruins of the old capital on Skiathos. The monastery of Pangia Evangelistria is a famous monument on the island that played an important role in the Greek War of Independence. There is also a museum of Alexandros Papadiamantis, a famous writer who lives on the island.
Skopelos is an island located south of Skiathos. There are a few lovely ports on the southern side of the island. Fans of Mamma Mia! will recognise Agios Ioannis church from the movie. There are also interesting monasteries to visit if you are interested in historical heritage. For more advanced scuba divers, a good idea is to visit a Cristophoros shipwreck sunk in 1983.
Alonissos is often the first stop for many sailors in Sporades. The reason is that it is the home of the National Marine Park , the last colony of monk seals. These shy creatures are difficult to see but each year attracts a lot of sailors. There is an interesting pirate museum and a monastery for history lovers. Alonissos is surrounded by many interesting small islets worth exploring.
Skyros is a little bit different than the rest of Sporades; the weather is more like in the Cyclades, and it is less sheltered. It is more distant from the rest of the islands but worth a visit, especially by more adventurous sailors. Most beaches are on the west coast . There is an archaeological museum on the island and a very interesting horse ranch.

Also tasting local wines, cheese and yoghurt is a good option for exploring the island's gastronomy.
Astakomakaronada is a pasta prepared with lobster meat in a tomato-based sauce flavoured with herbs and red wine. It is usually served with spaghetti, and it is the local dish of Skyros Island.
Kouneli stifado is a traditional Greek stew often found on Skiathos island. It consists of browned rabbit meat cooked with onions, tomatoes, tomato paste, garlic, red wine, and olive oil.
Skopelitiki tiropita is a cheese filled pastry traditionally prepared on Skopelos island. Usually, it is prepared with local goat milk, feta cheese and olive oil.

Greece news.
Your Sporades yacht charter can explore up to eleven rugged islands, situated just off the east coast of mainland Greece. A Sporades yacht charter, by comparison, will tend to be a little quieter than some of the other better known Greek island neighbours. Nonetheless, this area of Greece boasts a bounteous natural beauty, a wonderful climate and spectacular scenic views and a luxury yacht charter vacation is the best way to experience all the treasures on offer. Some of these riches include golden beaches, craggy rocky shorelines and brilliant turquoise waters as matched with the bluest of skies - making this destination an ideal place to get away from it all and relax amongst the wonderful rugged aesthetics.
In fact, only four of the Sporades are inhabited with villagers, so exploring the various islands of Skopelos, Skiathos, Alonissos and Skyros by yacht presents enjoyable opportunities to drop anchor at a whim and appreciate any number of delightfully secluded and tranquil bays. The mountainous terrain together with lush vegetation makes for some charming for cruising but it is surely the rich in marine life (with the possibility of watching whales, dolphins, seals and turtles) which really brings the islands to the fore (see Alonissos Island below).
Rugged Coastlines with Beach Hideaways, Natural Marine Life, Pine Forest Walks, Romantic Towns, Relaxing Bars

Alonissos is the last and most distant on our list and also the least populated of the Sporades Islands. This island brims with marine life and it’s secluded bays meet the wonderful. Another of the Sporades with excellent walking trails this green island lets you work your way through sunny coves, green forests, orchards and meadows – all of which are steeped in natural beauty.
To learn more about the various Sporades yacht charter itineraries, or to customise your own one, please to speak to charter broker specialist . Alternatively, below you can see a selection of all of the luxury charter boats and superyachts currently open for charter in Greece and the Sporades.
A Sporades yacht charter in Greece is a favorite yachting holiday for those seeking warm Mediterranean waterways steeped in rich history and culture. Spending a week or two on a crewed luxury yacht in this part of Greece is a yacht holiday to be rivaled by few others. The Sporades Islands lie on the northwestern section of the Aegean Sea. Known for the exciting and charming experience that they provide, the Sporades Islands is one yacht charter destination in the Mediterranean that is a worthy consideration to include as part of your Greece itinerary.
The Northern Sporades is the official attribution to this island area, and refers to several fertile and remote islands of varying sizes and shapes in the northwestern section of the Aegean Sea. The islands are actually covered by relatively thick vegetation within a topography that is generally mountainous. Most of the beaches can only be reached by boat, and their isolated anchorages which are teeming wildlife is one thing that brings an idyllic holiday paradise.
Sporades Yacht Charter Experiences
The prevailing climate you are likely to encounter on a Sporades yacht charter is what you would expect in any typical Eastern Mediterranean resort destination – moderate winter months with occasional rainfall and hot summer months. The main temperature range in this region is 16 to 28 degrees Celsius during the summer high season months from April to October.
The sailing route to and within Sporades offer a diverse yacht charter vacation possibilities, and it is ideal for those yacht charter enthusiasts with midrange sailing skills. Majority of sailors and tourist that flock to this popular Greek destination proceed to any of the 4 major ports of Sporades – Alonissos, Skiathos, Skyros and Skopelos. There are other ideal entry points to the region, and these include popular places along the northern side of the Evian Coast, within the Gulf of Pagassitikos and along the Eastern section of the Thessaly Coast.
A Sporades yacht vacation is considered more of a quiet off the beaten track type of Greek destination. It is not the typical busy and crowded yacht charter holiday destination in Greece and there are several old sanctuaries as inhabited by a number of diverse animal and plant species.
Sailing to this Greek destination on board a luxury superyacht is enhanced by the numerous interesting anchorages and harbours within the region. However, while the islands cannot boast an abundance of new marinas like some other destinations in Greece, this “limitation” is compensated by diverse yacht charter possibilities. There are a lot of sailing possibilities within Sporades even for beginners, and the most popular sailing destinations are within the south end portions of Sporades.
The islands of Sporades are definitely the ideal choice for those who want to discover and savor the natural splendors of Greece. It is a favorite place for nature lovers, and while the islands cannot really rival the range of important landmarks and architectural masterpieces with historical significance in other parts of the Aegean region, the island still has a decent collection of artifacts and remnants of ancient civilizations, and there are enough museums within the region as well.

The Sporades begin with Skiathos - the closest to the mainland, with an airport, and the busiest - followed by Skopelos and Alonissos, which are larger, quieter and more rugged. Generally, conditions in the Sporades for sailing are calm, with the islands less affected by the northern wind (the meltemi ) that buffets other parts of the Aegean in the summer months.
There is no shortage of delightful and secluded bays to anchor on all the islands.
Around Alonissos and the smaller islands further east is The National Marine Park of Alonnisos Northern Sporades set up to protect, among other endangered species, the Mediterranean Monk Seal. The restrictions on yachts and tourism mean the island of Piperi and its coastal waters are out of bounds.

The beautiful Sporades Islands of Northern Greece are wonderfully unspoilt by tourism. Of the twenty-four islands, only four are permanently inhabited, making this the most secluded of all Greek sailing destinations. Emerald waters and a salty sea breeze keep you company on the most carefree of yachting holidays. You’ll swim on the crest of silvery waves with dolphins as playmates, explore unspoilt beaches, discover a brand new passion for fishing, find the perfect spot in a calm, windless harbour and succumb to the ruby sunset, cocktail at hand. The Sporades offer sheltered sailing with moderate winds making this an ideal destination for families and couples seeking peace and tranquillity on a crewed or bareboat yacht charter.
Start your yacht charter from the forested island of Skiathos, which shot to fame as a location for the 2008 hit movie “Mamma Mia”. Verdant countryside, rural monasteries and a cobbled maze of an old town are but a footnote to the island’s main attraction – glorious beaches. From the pine-forested fine white sand of Koukounaries to the legions of nudists at Banana beach, Skiathos is a sun worshipper’s paradise. Sail eastwards into the Gulf of Volos or westwards to the islands of Alonissos and Skopelos and feel an immediate change of pace. You will encounter sleepy fishing villages, lovely sandy beaches and deserted anchorages, not to mention the possibility of spotting dolphins, whales and the endangered Mediterranean Monk Seal.
Blue waters, green lands in the northern aegean.
The most northerly boat charter region in the Aegean Sea, the Sporades island group is a place of castles, lively villages, forested hills and sandy beaches, all surrounded by some of the clearest water in the region.
The summer Meltemi makes for excellent sailing conditions, enabling you to cover the ground and stay over in your choice of coastal settlement or secluded anchorage. The Sporades charter region is close enough to the Greek mainland for you to include some tops spots there in a two-week sailing itinerary, so you really get the most out of your holiday in this special place.
Top spots to visit on your Sporades boat charter
This is a large area and there are several possible bases from which to launch a Sporades and Northern Aegean charter sailing holiday. Most popular as a start point is the island of Skiathos, after arriving by plane or ferry from mainland Greece. Skiathos town is a most attractive place, a popular tourist destination well set up to cater for visitors. Most of the population lives on the arable southern, more sheltered side of the island. Don't leave without visiting Moni Evangelistria, a famous monastery of the Greek Church, built on the island's highest point.
Sailing among the Northern Sporades islands
Immediately to the west of Skiathos is the hilly island of Skopelos. The northern end of Skopelos does not have much to recommend it on a yacht charter, however there are some nice sheltered bays in the south and southeast, including the main settlement of Skopelos town.
Like all the Greek islands, Skopelos has its share of history, and in legend it is associated with Dionysus, the God of Wine. A convenient point of call, Skopelos is on the way to perhaps the area's best-known charter-holiday attraction, the National Marine Park of Alonissos. The best anchorages here are around Patitiri and Steni Vala, along the southern coast. The nearby island of Peristera provides ample opportunity for some wonderful Greek island explorations within a small sailing area.
The large island of Skyros is some sailing distance from Alonissus, so plan your visit if you wish to include that destination. On the way lies the small uninhabited island of Skantzoura, which has sufficient shelter for a stopover. From there to Linaria, the main port town on Skyros, it's around 30 nautical miles, downwind when the prevailing Meltimi blows. Linaria is a good place from which to explore western Skyros.
Should time and inclination be against visiting Skyros, there is plenty to do and see closer to base. Kyra Panagia is a substantial yet uninhabited island that is also part of the national marine park. Several good anchorages with sandy beaches include the almost fully-enclosed harbour at the northern end of the island.
West and north to mainland Greece
An alternative to sailing east and south from Skiathos, or in addition to it if time allows, is the opportunity on a charter from this destination to explore some of the Greek mainland. The nearby coastal region has much to recommend it. See the Pagasetic Gulf, travelling as far as Volos, considered one of Greece's finest cities. Sail the western shore of the Magnesia Peninsula, from where Jason and the Argonauts set off in search of the Golden Fleece. Visit unspoiled and relatively unknown Trikeri Island, home to just a hundred people where all transport is by foot, donkey or boat. Cross to the village of Orei, and explore the northern end of Evia Island.
To complete the picture of the Sporades sailing region, mention must be made of northern Greece. On a two-week charter, with a crew willing to face the Meltimi, your travels can take you to the Chalkidiki region, with fine anchorages available in and around Porto Koufu, between the three slender fingers of land that reach out into the Aegean here.
Depending on the old enemy time, visit Thessaloniki, where you can stop off at a popular tavernas for a sip or two of ouzo and a delicious souvlaki, perhaps entertained by the bouzouki-playing minstrels, then stroll the waterfront and watch the sun go down over a most amazing boat charter holiday in Greece.
The Meltemi blows here in the summer, making for sometimes fresh sailing conditions. Talk to us about how to make the most of every day on your sailing program.
Rating: 5 / 5 Boat was fantastic - was it's first charter so perfect condition. We sailed around Ithica and Kefalonia - both islands were beautiful. Sail connections was easy to deal with. Kurt, Australia, Jul 12th, 2024
.carousel-cell { width: 50%; /* full width */ } .sc-carousel, section .sc-carousel { margin-top: 0; } Rating: 5 / 5 (The boat was) perfect for our family of four. Only slight negative is that the helm position has a fairly large blind spot and there is no shade. Favourite spot ... Sarakiniko Beach, Ithaka. This beautiful spot offered good anchorage, a local taverna and easy access over the hill to Vathy. (Your service was) excellent. Dimitri in particular was very accommodating and nothing seemed to be a problem. Stephen, Australia, Jul 8th, 2024
.carousel-cell { width: 50%; /* full width */ } .sc-carousel, section .sc-carousel { margin-top: 0; } Rating: 5 / 5 The Lagoon 46 was the best catamaran we have chartered. There was plenty of deck and seating space and all the bedrooms/ensuites were a good size. Preveza was a great starting point and we enjoyed travelling south to Ithaki and north to Paxi. Kalamos was a highlight we tied up to a pier next to a taverna for the night and it was a lovely spot. We had very good service from Robert and Sue at Yachting Holidays and dealing with an NZ company gave us peace of mind. The service from Fyly in Greece was also excellent. We really appreciated being able to board the boat early and our skipper was also very friendly and easy to get along with. Our skipper Adrian Dimitru was keen to get away on Saturday afternoon so we headed south and got a day ahead which was great. .he cruise was excellent and Adrian got us to some of his favourite spots so we were very lucky. Ithaki not to be missed. Craig, New Zealand, Oct 18th, 2023
Rating: 5 / 5 Dear Sue, we would like to thank you and Robert for all the work you put in to make our charter run so smoothly from your end. We absolutely loved the Greek Islands, they were everything we had ever imagined. Jill and Pip, New Zealand , Oct 9th, 2019
Good breezes that provided just the right level of challenge. Not super crowded - no troubles berthing / mooring / eating / etc. Fairly chilled - at least compared to Croatia. Patmos was very good. John, Australia, Aug 17th, 2019
Had a great time. The wind was terrific - good fun, but nothing too hairy - exactly what we were looking for to take it up a notch or two from Croatia last year. And the Dodecanese were really good - nice ports, not too crowded (esp compared to Croatia) - just felt a bit more out of the way. DYC were fine - a little bit more on the 'smell of an oily rag' end of things compared to the very efficient German-run scene at Trogir, but it all worked and no real issues. Excellent recommendation Robert - boat and destination - you nailed it! John, Australia, Jul 31st, 2019
The Lucky Clover was fantastic. We travelled around the Saronic Islands which were beautiful. A new adventure every day. One day we hired scooters and explored the islands. Great service thank you. 10 out of 10, a trip of a lifetime! Deborah, New Zealand, Aug 1st, 2017

The Sporades were made famous by the Hollywood blockbuster, Mamma Mia. Spend a week getting to know the four main islands and the wildlife in the national marine park, the first in Greece and home to the Mediterranean monk seal.
The sailing in the Sporades and Chalkidiki Peninsula is extremely easy, as the Meltemi does not blow as strong as it does further south. The prevailing wind usually blows from the north-east, but occasionally in July and August a stronger wind blows from the north-west. During the summer months, it rarely rains and the temperature sits at a nice 20-30ºC.
There are direct charter flights from the UK to Skiathos typically on a Friday, or you can fly into Athens and transfer to the islands.
From Athens there are three ways of getting to the islands (prices are approximate per adult):
Day 1 : Arrive in Marina Skiathos The main sight in Skiathos town is the museum that used to be the house of the Greek writer Alexandros Papadiamantis during the 19th century. For theatre lovers, on the small peninsula of Bourtzi, there is an open-air theatre where performances of all kinds are shown there
Day 2 : Skopelos Island (20 NM) For those who love hiking, the view from the rock that stands in the sea located on the northern part of the island, will definitely reward you. Its 104 carved steps will lead you to the top of the rock where the chapel of Ag. Ioannis sto Kastri stands. Don’t leave Skopelos before you try the famous cheese pie available in most taverns.
Day 3 : Linaria (Skiros Island) 42 NM While in Skyros, you can visit the Faltaits Historical and Folklore Museum said to be one of the oldest, most beautiful and richest historical-folklore museums of Greece and it has an international reputation for decades. You should also check the ancient ruins of the Venetian castle built on top of the hill that has a breath-taking view. Under the castle, dominating the whole island is the monastery of Saint George (Ai Giorgis Skirianos, the patron Saint of this island) founded in 962.
Day 4 : Paignio (Panagia Island) 40 NM
Day 5 : Patitiri (Alonissos Island) 13 NM Patitiri is the current capital of the island. The old capital, Chora, was destroyed in a 1965 earthquake. Try the local delicacy, roasted figs with honey, before you leave.
Day 6 : Koukounaries (Skiathos Island) 25 NM
Day 7 : Marina Skiathos 6 NM

Mediterranean
Your Sporades Islands Yacht Charters will visit some of the most beautiful islands in Greece. Evidently, some of the beaches are only accessible by boat.
The Sporades lie along Greece’s central mainland and Evia. Surprisingly, they have held onto the area’s original vibe and traditions, which haven’t changed for centuries.
Four Sporades Islands are inhabited: Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos, and Skyros.
Alonissos | greek island brimming with beauty.
The yacht charters in the Sporades offer the quintessential Mediterranean experience, with azure waters, sunny skies, and the prevailing wind. Indeed, the climate is perfect for sailing conditions and swimming from July to September. That's the time when the sea temperature is warm enough to enjoy a dip.
The Sporades generally have a Mediterranean climate, with relatively mild, rainy winters. The summer months are hot and sunny. During the night, you can enjoy Meltemi winds. In the winter, it rarely snows.
The local cuisine in the Sporades islands (Skyros, Alonissos , Skiathos , Skopelos ) boasts simplicity and intense flavors. Definitely, the fresh aromatic herbs, olive oil, and fresh meat have something to do with this.
In addition, the islands are well-known for their dairy products, thyme honey, and spoon sweets.
Waters abundant in delectable seafood surround the Sporades islands. Besides fish, there are lobster, shrimp, crab, squid, and octopus, to name a few. Moreover, if you enjoy seafood recipes, you will appreciate a delicious meal in the waterfront taverns of Alonissos Island.
Sporades Islands Yacht Charters offer a unique experience. For instance, they have fewer charters compared to those in the Cyclades, Saronic Gulf, and Dodecanese Islands.
Below is one sample schedule. We will work with you to create a custom route based on your interests and desires. The weather conditions may also play a role.
Arrive in Skiathos and board your yacht. Consequently, set sail for Limnonari.
Limnonari is a small sandy beach hidden in a magnificent cove. Because pine trees surround the bay, the waters of Limnonari appear green. Spend time relaxing and snorkeling. There is also a small beach bar where you can purchase drinks and snacks.
Patitiri is the capital town of Alonnisos. Spread your towel out on the beach, or you can explore the nearby Alonnisos Museum. You may also indulge yourself with a massage or facial at the award-winning Amani Spa .
Milia Beach is a beautiful pebbly beach with sparkling green waters hidden in the heart of a lovely bay. Swim and snorkel in turquoise waters, beach comb, and relax. Later, sail to Kyra Panagia, where you can visit another spectacular beach. You can then venture farther inland to see the cave church of St Luke.
A day of sailing takes you to Psathoura, home to one of the tallest lighthouses in the Aegean Sea. Relax on the beach at Milia Kokkinokastro. You can also wander into the nearby forest, or walk along the coast.
Anchor for the night at Planitis Island.
After a morning at the beach, sail to Skopelos Island. Enjoyable activities on Skopelos include hiking, exploring small villages, and swimming in the clear water at a secluded beach. You may also want to visit the Marine Park of Alonissos. In the evening, stop by an open-air tavern for a drink.
Tsougrias is a protected natural habitat just opposite Skiathos' main port. Indeed, its beautiful white sand beaches, lush vegetation, and clear waters make it a popular summer destination.
Return to Skiathos to end your journey.

Discover the sporades islands.
Lying in the Aegean Sea, just off Greece’s east coast the Sporades archipelago is one of the Mediterranean’s lesser known island groups that has retained its unique beauty and authentic charm over centuries. Only four of the twenty four islands are inhabited, Skiathos and Skopelos are the most famous while Alonissos and Skyros keep a lower profile. The Sporades are the ultimate island-hopping sailing area, scattered – literally ‘sporadically’. Sail away from a backdrop of thick green pine forest and head out into the turquoise Aegean sea exploring secluded coves and pretty little beaches. Sail surrounded by incomparable natural beauty, breathtaking landscapes and idyllic coastlines and explore dazzling, whitewashed houses, chapels, churches, monasteries and labyrinthine streets in authentic towns full of life. Having provided the backdrop for the film Mama Mia there are still plenty of places you can reach only by yacht.
The Sporades
Legend has it that the gods created the Sporades Islands by tossing colored pebbles into the Aegean Sea.
The myth is reflected in the name Sporades, which means ‘the scattered ones’, as well as in the colours of the verdant green hills, sapphire blue waters and sandy beaches.

You may see below our wide range of catamarans that can be offered for bareboat charter, skippered charter, or crewed charter.
Please note that for a bareboat charter you need to hold a valid International Certificate of Competence (ICC). If you are holding an ASA or RYA equivalent license, it can be easily converted into an ICC in your home country. We further advise that at least one additional guest holds an RYA Competent Crew Certificate or equivalent.

Yes, it's always a good idea to have insurance when you hire a yacht or boat. Insurance can protect you against unexpected expenses or damages that may occur during your charter, such as damage to the yacht, injury to passengers, or loss of personal belongings. SEARADAR offers its own insurance product, the free deposit pack, which allows you to insure 100% of the deposit. This provides an extra layer of protection and peace of mind during your charter.
The qualifications you need to hire a boat or yacht will depend on the country and region where you plan to sail. In Croatia, for example, you are required by law to have a valid sailing license or certificate to operate a yacht or boat. The type of license or certificate you need will depend on the size and type of vessel you plan to operate. If you have a valid sailing license or certificate from your home country, it may be recognized in Croatia. If you don't have a sailing license or certificate, you can hire a skipper to handle the yacht for you.
If your yacht breaks down during your charter, the first thing you should do is to inform us as soon as possible. We will provide you with instructions on what to do next and may send a technician to fix the problem or provide you with a replacement yacht, depending on the severity of the issue.
When hiring a yacht, there are several important factors to consider to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable experience. Here are some things to keep in mind: Size and Type of Yacht: Consider the size and type of yacht that will best suit your needs. Factors to consider include the number of people in your party, your budget, and your itinerary. Crew: Determine whether you need a crew for your yacht charter. If you are an experienced sailor, you may be able to charter a yacht without a crew. However, if you are new to sailing or want to relax and enjoy the trip, a crewed yacht may be a better option. Itinerary: Plan your itinerary in advance to ensure that you visit the destinations you want to see. Research the area and check the availability of mooring spaces and marinas. Season and Weather: Consider the season and weather when planning your trip. Summer is the most popular season for yacht charter in many destinations, but it may be crowded and more expensive. Be aware of weather conditions and avoid sailing in bad weather. Budget: Set a budget for your yacht charter and be aware of additional costs, such as fuel, mooring fees, and food and drink expenses. Choose a yacht that fits within your budget and consider booking in advance to get the best deals. Safety: Make sure that the yacht you hire is properly equipped with safety equipment, such as life jackets, flares, and a first aid kit. Be aware of safety regulations and follow the rules of the sea.
Yes, indicate your request in the comments to the order, and we will give you a deferred payment by placing the yacht on reserve for you.
Yacht charters are available for any period. But there are generally accepted rules. For example, sailing yachts are most often rented weekly: Saturday to Saturday. You can charter for 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, etc.
You can rent a yacht with a captain who will take care of all the issues related to the yacht's management. Simply choose this option in the extras. All you need to do is get with your friends together, bring all the essentials and embark on an exciting yacht trip! It's easier than you think, even if it's the first charter you've ever been on!
Our services are absolutely free for you. We don't charge any commissions or extra fees to our customers.

The cost of renting a sailboat or catamaran in Greece can vary depending on a number of factors, including the type of boat, its size, the time of year, and the rental company. On average, you can expect to pay anywhere from €500 to €2,500 or more per week for a sailboat or catamaran rental in Greece. It's always best to compare prices from multiple rental companies and to book in advance to ensure availability and to get the best possible rate. Additionally, don't forget to factor in additional costs such as fuel, insurance, and any additional equipment or services you may need during your trip.
Whether or not you need a visa to visit Greece depends on your nationality and the purpose and duration of your visit. Citizens of many countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and most European Union countries, can enter Greece for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without a visa for tourism or business purposes. However, if you plan to stay longer than 90 days, work, study, or engage in other activities, you may need a visa. It's always best to check with the Greek embassy or consulate in your country to determine your specific visa requirements.
Yes, it is common practice to pay a deposit when hiring a yacht in Greece. The amount of the deposit can vary depending on the yacht charter company and the type of yacht you are hiring, but it is usually a percentage of the total charter fee. The deposit is typically used to cover any damages to the yacht or its equipment, as well as any additional expenses incurred during the charter, such as fuel or provisioning costs. The deposit is usually paid at the time of booking or upon arrival, and it will be refunded at the end of the charter period if there are no damages or additional expenses. It is important to carefully review the terms and conditions of the yacht charter agreement before making a deposit, as some companies may have different policies regarding deposit amounts and refund procedures. Additionally, it is recommended to have travel insurance that covers yacht charters to protect against any unexpected circumstances that may affect your charter plans.
With FDP (Free Deposit Pack), you have the chance to avoid a full security deposit and lock in your funds. Just pay 20% upfront (non-refundable), and experience a hassle-free journey. * The price of the FDP rises to 25% if booked less than 30 days before the charter.

Northern Sporades is a group of islands in the Northwest Aegean situated north of Evia and east of Pilio. The area comprises islands Alonnisos , Skopelos and Skiathos - the area’s only inhabited islands—the Sporades are a perfect destination for those looking to charter a yacht and explore secluded maritime treasures.
Geologically intriguing, the majority of these islands boast limestone rock formations, except for Psathoura, which is of volcanic origin. Nearby Psathoura, a dormant volcano invites exploration—a truly unique opportunity for a Sporades boat rental excursion.
On Skopelos, valleys with steep slopes cradle gentle streams, providing picturesque anchorage spots for those embarking on a yacht charter in the Sporades. The islands are verdant with Aleppo pine forests and holly oak maquis, a lush setting that perfectly complements the blue of the surrounding Aegean.
With 94% of the area covered by water, opportunities for sailing and boat renting in the Sporades are plentiful. The National Marine Park, encompassing a vast range of marine biotopes, offers a vibrant, diverse backdrop for sailing adventures.
Beyond the natural wonders, the Northern Sporades are steeped in history. The remnants of various eras—from prehistoric to Byzantine—are scattered across the islands, making a yacht charter in the Sporades akin to a journey through time. This rich history is vividly present, from the shipwrecks resting in the depths to the ancient monasteries and churches that grace the islands.
The area’s caves and secluded beaches, nestled between rocky coasts, offer a serene habitat for the Mediterranean monk seal. Piperi Island, in particular, is a significant breeding site for these seals and stands as the core of the Northern Sporades Marine Park—an unparalleled highlight for any Sporades boat rent adventure.
An isolated population of wild goats can be found exclusively on Gioura, a unique and unexpected sight for those exploring the Sporades by yacht. For birdwatchers, the islands are a sanctuary of abundant birdlife, from migratory visitors to native species nesting in the cliffs.
The waters surrounding these islands are teeming with life; with 170 species of fish, 70 species of amphipods, and 40 species of sponges recorded in the area, marine biologists and snorkeling enthusiasts alike will find a Sporades boat rental to be the gateway to an underwater world of wonders.
The Sporades, with their blend of natural beauty, rich history, and diverse wildlife, are a dream destination for sailors and explorers. Whether by catamaran or monohull boat rental, these islands promise an Aegean adventure that is as enriching as it is unforgettable.

In July and August the meltemi can bring stronger winds Force 5-6, but all the islands have good shelter. Summer temperatures reach 27-29ºC.
