Imaginocean Yacht Design’s Two New Projects

Imaginocean Yacht Design tender and motoryacht

What started as a tender design project turned into a two-boat deal. Tasmania-based Imaginocean Yacht Design is working with fellow Aussie company C.Way to build a 26-foot tender and a 154-foot motoryacht.

C.Way is a relatively new company, initially formed to finish the 121-foot Tango that began construction at Oceanfast a few years ago. Now C.Way is contracting with a variety of builders for both custom and semicustom yachts. C.Way approached Imaginocean Yacht Design to create a tender that could serve multiple purposes, not just shuttle guests to and from shore. The result is the edgy-looking eight-seater boat in the rendering above. Presently under construction at an unnamed shipyard in Hobart, Australia, the aluminum and composite tender should launch in a few months.

During the design process of the tender, the principals of C.Way and Imaginocean Yacht Design began discussing motoryacht design. They all felt better speed, lower fuel consumption, and more were possible, yet not being achieved in most designs. A few more conversations and computer modeling attempts later, and the 154-footer in the rendering was created. Will Allison, head of Imaginocean Yacht Design, says, “We based the design on a longer, lower platform that still remains under the 500 gross tons limit. The longer waterline length allows for higher displacement speeds, with lower fuel consumption, while reducing the height improves stability. The motion is more comfortable, with less reliance on active stabilization, and the yacht is simply more pleasant to be aboard.”

C.Way is presently negotiating with shipyards to build the yacht. She’ll emphasize indoor-outdoor spaces for a party of 10 in ways that other builders and designers don’t. For example, rather than have balconies off the saloon, the yacht will have full-height windows that slide open. The skylounge will also be open-air. Of course, the megayacht will also have popular features like the transom beach club and a spa/lounge, located toward the foredeck.

Also different: The master will be half a deck below the saloon. Crewmembers will appreciate having larger than usual cabins, too, with access to stowage spaces on the lowest deck. And the chef will be particularly happy to have the galley on deck… no below-decks, tiny cooking area this, as is increasingly becoming common on some European builds.

Two lean, green superyacht concepts from Imaginocean

With broad views from the interior and exciting exterior spaces, two new concepts from Australian studio Imaginocean Yacht Design offer fantastic lifestyle – while clever technology keeps fuel bills down-to-earth.

The 40m GT-40 H and the 55m GT-55 H are sleek semi-displacement yachts, styled in accordance with the designers’ ‘longer, lower, lighter’ ethos. The GT-55 has a huge ‘beach resort’ aft (the GT-40 has a smaller version) and both have bow cockpits. The layouts of the yachts emphasise casual living, with split-level main saloons that provide a mixture of light-filled and intimate living spaces. Both yachts also have full beam master suites and four en-suite guest cabins with large windows.

‘There are ever-increasing areas of glazing onboard craft of all sizes,’ says Will Allison, principal designer at Imaginocean. ‘Rapidly evolving technology is ensuring that the structural integrity of those vessels is not compromised, but the result is an increasing “greenhouse effect”, with much higher resultant air-conditioning loads.’

The Imaginocean designers have therefore used Smart Glass throughout the boat – it gradually tints at the touch of a button, reducing this effect. Similarly, the designs’ LED lighting schemes use much less power than more traditional light sources.

Both have hybrid propulsion systems, allowing them to operate at up to 20 knots courtesy of the main engines, travel at up to eight knots for short periods under electric power alone, or for extended periods in diesel-electric mode, with just the gensets running.

‘I wanted to explore the options available with existing technologies,’ says Allison, ‘so the systems are proven and practical. These are 20-knot boats, but they are likely to spend much of the time operating at much lower speeds.’

Allison also notes that due to the power-saving measures on the boat, ‘it is possible for yachts like these to spend considerable time at anchor without the gensets running’.

The GT-40 H and GT-55 H will be released officially at the 2012 Monaco Yacht Show. Located on the Superyacht Australia stand, IYD will also have the CWay 47m Tango 2 and 8m tender on display.

Hot on the heels of the full displacement 47 metre Tango 2 , Australia’s Imaginocean Yacht Design (IYD) has released details of two exciting new designs – the 40 metre GT-40 H and the 55 metre GT-55 H : a pair of semi-displacement superyachts unlike anything else on the market. As with T2 , IYD have pursued their “longer, lower, lighter” ethos with these two projects, but have taken it to a new level with their latest yachts… and they’ve added “green” into the mix as well. Both run hybrid propulsion systems, allowing them to operate at up to twenty knots courtesy of the main engines, travel at up to eight knots for short periods under electric power alone, or for extended periods in diesel-electric mode, with just the gensets running. From maximised waterline lengths, to the LED lighting & Smart Glass glazing to cut down on the air conditioning load: every aspect of the designs were considered from a low impact & efficiency point of view.

The styling is a beguiling mix of retro and up-to-the-minute: features like reverse bows with titanium cutwaters and cosy forward cockpits, complete with helm stations, are common to both craft – proving that superyachts can still be fun! Designer Will Allison says, “the designs were partly inspired by the styling and efficiency of the original Midnight Lace series, designed by the late Tom Fexas in the early 80’s, partly by the sensible proportions of modern sailing vessels, and partly by the long-held desire to create a new class of relatively compact, stylish yachts that represent the latest in efficiency and technology”.

Innovative layouts, with an emphasis on relaxed, casual living, see features like the split-level main saloons, which provide a mix of light-filled and intimate living spaces. Both yachts of course have expansive, full-beam Master Suites. In the GT-55 this is located forward, with an adjoining office; in the GT-40 it is aft and has direct access to the aft deck. There are four en-suite guest cabins in both yachts; all of which feature large windows and extensive storage, ensuring that guests will enjoy a comfortable stay.

The highlight amongst highlights of the GT-55 must surely be the “Beach Resort” (to call it a ‘club’ would simply not do it justice). A second saloon located down and aft, it can be accessed directly from the guest cabins, and opens out on to the aft watersports deck. A combination of folding bulwarks, balconies, spa pool and hydraulic swim platform ensure that it will be a favourite amongst everyone on board. Indeed both yachts enjoy a variety of open and covered outdoor living spaces. An electric bimini, that is completely hidden when stowed, provides shade when required on the bridgedeck of the GT-40 for instance.

Generous crew cabins and living areas are up forward, below the tender storage facilities, which in the case of the GT-40 , can be filled with water to provide an enormous foredeck spa pool. On the GT-55 there is room for a tender of up to 10 metres in length, along with a variety of water toys, all stored below deck.

These latest offerings from Imaginocean certainly mark the design office as one of Australia’s, if not the world’s, most progressive. The GT-40 H and GT-55 H will be released officially at the 2012 Monaco Yacht Show. Located on the Superyacht Australia stand, IYD will also have the CWay 47 metre Tango 2 and 8 metre Tender on display.
