One Man's Boat: Herreshoff H28

A classic sloop-rigged h28 which has undergone a full restoration.

Bunbury boatbuilder Jim MacDonald built about half a dozen of L. Francis Herreshoff's famous cruising and racing H-28 yachts in the 1950s. At the time the H-28, which L. Francis had designed in the early 1940s, was one of the most popular yachts in Australia.

It could be cruised anywhere, it was quick around the buoys in everything from a zephyr to a gale, and its lines were beautiful. Herreshoff said he wanted to design a yacht that combined "grace of line, stability and sea kindliness" It would be, he said, a cruising ketch for the man who has only limited time to sail and who "must report to the office without fail on Monday morning". Dozens of H-28s were built by do-it-yourselfers around the world and hundreds more by professional boat yards such as that run by Jim McDonald in the pretty town of Bunbury, south of Perth.

While McDonald was working on this yacht, acclaimed Australian film maker Charles Chauvel was working on the first full-length colour feature film made in Australia. The film, called Jedda after the lead character played by Ngarla Kunoth, was a huge hit when it was released. MacDonald launched this yacht in1959, named her Jedda, and so she still is today.

Retired South Australian sailor Tony Gerlach, and a syndicate comprised of two of his mates and their three wives, became the fifth owners of Jedda almost three years ago when they bought her from a bloke who had brought the sloop with him to Adelaide from Perth a few years before.

In Perth the yacht, rigged as a Bermudian sloop rather than the ketch Herreshoff originally designed, had been used by all her previous owners for racing and an occasional bit of coastal cruising. As with many boats of that more carefree time, she had never been fitted with a pulpit, pushpit or safety lines – things most of today’s Adelaide sailors regard as necessities.

She was also fairly bare below decks; but her hull was sound and watertight and free of rot.

MacDonald had built the hull of 32mm Karri that was carvel planked. Her full-length cast-iron keel was filled with lead ingots and she displaced three and a half tonnes.

Gerlach and his two partners, assisted by shipwrights Klaus Becker and Rob Ayliffe, set to work on a full restoration and interior fit-out -- a job that took almost two years. "We did spend a lot of time and money on Jedda but she had been sitting, unloved, for a couple of years and needed a lot of love and attention," Gerlach told BoatPoint.

The deck and cabin were restored and repainted in 2011. The two-cylinder 10hp Nanni diesel was fully serviced and restored in 2010 and new mounts and a new propeller fitted. A 40-litre stainless-steel fuel tank was also installed. The mast was refurbished and re-rigged in 2010 and navigation and anchor lights fitted, along with the new stanchions and safety lines, bow cap, rollers and an electric anchor winch.

A furling headsail was fitted and the main sail was fitted with a stacking sail pack and lazy jacks.

The interior was rebuilt to house a small galley and large cooler, a manual head and comfortable sleeping accommodation for four. For day sailing the cockpit holds six with a squeeze and six people can enjoy a meal at the table in the saloon.

Now with other interests competing for their time, the syndicate partners have placed Jedda on the market for $35,000, a price Gerlach says is very reasonable considering the time and money that was spent bringing her back to top notch condition.

The 35.3m (115.7ft) GRANDE 36M features a highly efficient displacement-to-planing hull form, reducing fuel consumption and emissions by up to 30 percent compared to standard hull designs. She is of GRP and carbon fibre construction and built to RINA classification by the Italian shipyard Azimut. Her exterior design is by Alberto Mancini and Achille Salvagni styled her interiors, giving her all-Italian flair.

On the sun deck is a wet bar and U-shaped bench seating beneath the hardtop with a sun lounge aft. The main deck aft has an al fresco lounge with a sofa and chaise longue seating that is served by a wet bar. Steps aft lead down to the large swim platform and beach club with rain shower, while the starboard sidedeck leads up to the foredeck lounge.

An open-plan main saloon has two lounge areas, one with sofa seating the other with armchairs and huge picture windows combining with cut-down bulwarks to deliver exceptional views. The upper deck has the wheelhouse forward with a formal dining area aft surrounded by floor-to-ceiling glass that slides away to open the space on three sides.

The 36M TRIDECK welcomes 10 guests in five cabins. There are four en suite guest cabins on the lower deck; two double VIP suites aft and two twin cabins forward of them. Forward of the guest suites is the crew mess and accommodation for five crew.

Forward on the main deck is the owner's suite, with huge picture windows either side. It features an island king-sized double berth, a lounge area, and en suite with shower room forward. Aft of the owner's suite, the galley and dayhead are off the lobby.

H-28 (Herreshoff) is a 26 ′ 11 ″ / 8.2 m monohull sailboat designed by L. Francis Herreshoff and built by Cheoy Lee Shipyard, Gallart Shipyard (Astilleros Gallart), and Compass Yachts Ltd. starting in 1942.

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
• LOA: Length overall in feet
• Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

Herreshoff H-28

Anyone have experience with the H-28? THere are lots of them made in New Zealand - but they seem difficult to find in the States. I have a sale pending on an H-28 built by Parkins Marine, Florida. I'm just looking for some info, advice, stories, etc. Thanks!  

Hi Amy - are you looking at a plastic one or a wooden one? H28's aren't particularly fast racing yachts, but they are comfortable and competent cruisers capable of going most anywhere in the world you want to go. H-28 Hi, thanks for the reply. This is a "plastic" one - I think the ones made in New Zealand were modified with a deeper keel and more headroom. THis one has a 3 ft. 6 " keel and only 5 ft. 10" of headroom- but beautiful woodwork inside - basic equipment I've been to the new zealand owners group - great group. I was hoping to find someone who'd sailed in one of these fiberglass boats made by Parkins. I guess not many were made and they're like hens teeth. It's hard to figure out how much the boat is worth- not much to compare it to. Not planning on racing- just some cruising around New England. I'm new to this whole thing - thanks again for the response! amy  

H-28 Hi Amy, i am looking into a H-28 as well, for me it was love at first site... just not alot of info available on this boat. i understand that different yards built different variations but not much chatter about how they sail in different conditions or overall sea-comfort-motion. The one i'm looking into, is plastic & overpriced but so damm pretty!(kinda sounds like my last gf)... she's a ketch but just looks under canvassed and realllllllly sloooooow... cramped & nothing great below deck... but still... she's a flirt... and got that "take me to france & we'll have a good time" sorta look about her... anyway, sorry to ramble, its been a long winter... lets compare notes... regards, danville  

H-28 danville, yes - I loved her from the start too- so glad she was as nice in person as the photos! I'm having the boat surveyed now- then she'll be mine! Here's the link to the add on yachtworld 1981 Parkins/Herreshoff H 28 Sail Boat For Sale - www.yachtworld.com the only downside is that she hasn't got anything but basic equipment (electronics) - but the sails look to be in good shape. The cabin is lovely! The boat is hull #16 - built for Adrian Hooper - by Parkins Marine in Ft. Lauderdale florida. they have since gone out of business. She's a sloop but looks like at one time she was rigged as a cutter. It's been difficult to find others like it- most are ketch rigs There is another listed on yachtworld right now - in Florida. Looks just like Iota (mine - well almost mine) I have no idea how the boat sails- I've seen some reports that they're slow and you can't point too high into the wind, we'll see. Also it's going to be wet - she's got an offset prop- so that'll be interesting. My first boat and the one I learned to sail on (last summer) was a catalina 27 - the engine almost never worked so I didn't learn how to dock anyway - so I guess I'll be learning how to back with a tricky backing boat. Where are you located? Some years back someone was trying to start an owners association here in the U.S. but it never got off it's feet I think. New Zealand has a very active owner's group for the H-28's. send photos and let me know how the hunt goes! Amy  

I have an H-28 which I built & launched in May 2010. Happy to answer any questions.  

VERY cool that you built your own. I would love to see photos/ hear all about it. Where do you sail her? Is it a cutter? I did end up buying the H-28 and sailed it all last season. Took some getting used to the much heavier boat- but she sails great. I'm still having lots of trouble handling her under power - getting in and out of slips is quite frankly still beyond me. I have an offset prop and that combined with the weight and full keel - cant get her to turn. I'd love to hear about your boat!!! Amy  

I know this is an older thread but I am familiar with that boat. I worked with Dave Parkins way back then and made a few of the molds that boat was made from. I built hull # 2 for myself and had the boat until 1989. Last I heard it was in Texas. They are sweet boats and you made a good choice. Dave Parkins is still in Ft Lauderdale and has a boat lift mfg company now. Jeff  

I purchased a Parkins Marine H28 in 2004, and sail her on Lake Lanier in north Georgia. The records show the builder to be a "Jeff O.....". I'd be interested in knowing if it is the same person in this forum? I believe the boat's original name, and her current name, is WHISPER.

They were designed as ketches, with one headsail. Later design modification by Herreshoff to satisfy a customer's request presented the boat as a sloop. They were modified, and built in the Far East, with a higher aft part of the house to make headroom below. The Australians and/or New Zealanders further modified the plan (my guess without Herreshoff's blessing) to be slightly longer, deeper, etc. and built them of fiberglass. The large H-28 association in Australia does not represent the boat as she was originally designed, though, I'm sure it is close. Herreshoff originally intended them as week-enders, so the owners could return to work on Monday morning. That said, one or two have circumnavigated.

Mejack - I grew up St. Pete and get down a couple of times a year. Would love to intro myself and see your boat sometime if you are open to it. I will probably be in the market for a boat in 6 years (kids out of college then) and the H28 is on my radar screen.  

I have a Bermuda 30 built in 1964 by Far East Boats, LTD - mahoghony on ipol with iroko dead wood and spine, cross planked and riveted. Made one trip to Florida and decided the space in the cockpit was more important than the jigger. I've owned her for 25 years.

I built an H-28 and launched it in 1989. Purchased a fiberglass hull and deck with original lines from Krueger Marine out of Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. Took me eight years to complete. Aluminum spars, 20 hp Yanmar diesel, in line. All Honduras mahogany exterior woodwork, and Honduras mahogany and Oregon white ash down below. I even forged my own external keel. When she goes out she turns a lot of heads.

The Sirena 64 has an eye-catching plumb bow and high, flush bulwarks, along with cruising amenities and entertainment spaces on every level.

This yacht can come with a three- or four-stateroom layout. Both versions include a full-beam amidships master stateroom and a forepeak VIP stateroom.

Standard power on the 64 is twin 1,000 hp Caterpillar C12.9 diesels that give the yacht a reported 28-knot top hop and a 1,200-nautical-mile range at 10 knots. At press time, there were eight Sirena 64s available, ranging from $1.6 million to $2.5 million.
