Opinions of our adventurers

General rating.

29 Aug 2024 | One-day catamaran excursion along the coast of Alghero

Spectacular!!!

Unique and wonderful experience. Fabrizio and Tania were fantastic, super kind and helpful, they pampered us throughout the whole trip. The places we visited were spectacular to say the least, real open-air pools in which to swim and snorkel with the equipment kindly provided, enjoying the splendid marine fauna. In particular, it was very exciting to spot a pod of dolphins, which came very close to the boat with their wakes and acrobatics. The catamaran is very comfortable and spacious: fabulous on the return trip sailing with the sails unfurled and the engines off, lulled by the waves and the silence of the open sea. To sum up: my partner and I would do it a thousand more times and recommend it to anyone!

Excellent excursion: punctuality,...

Excellent excursion: punctuality, precision, kindness, attention and maximum availability of the skipper and his 'second'. Very pleasant welcome and cuisine, appetising lunch at the right time (which we also appreciated), invigorating fruit snack and glass of myrtle after the last swim. All 'seasoned' by a splendid day. I do not comment on the places ( wonderful, although a little crowded) because their beauty is well known and beyond question. An excursion to do also for the freedom that the boat trip with a few people ensures. Thanks to Alessio and Valerio. Carla Piva

24 Aug 2024 | Catamaran excursion to the Maddalena Archipelago with lunch

The Maddalena archipelago at ❤️

An unforgettable experience. A beautiful, unprecedented tour managed by Francesco the skipper and the very sweet Christine. Although in previous years we have toured the Maddalena archipelago twice with larger boats, we appreciated the versatility and adaptability of a catamaran that is not particularly large, but is able to fit in safely where other types of boat cannot. If we add to all this a top cuisine made of quality local products, then the result can only be excellent. We look forward to repeating this experience next summer.

17 Sep 2024 | Catamaran excursion to the Maddalena Archipelago with lunch

Fantastic outing

I start by thanking Francesco very much. He gave us a truly unique experience. To make you understand his professionalism, at the last minute the rest of the group that was supposed to go on the excursion with us cancelled, but despite this he kept his commitment and took us on the excursion despite the fact that there were only two of us. The rest needs no description, beautiful scenery, excellent service (including aperitifs and lunch) and Francesco's company was truly excellent. A heartfelt thank you.

05 Aug 2023 | Maddalena Archipelago catamaran tour from Cannigione with lunch

A splendid day

Beautiful day spent aboard the catamaran driven by Luca and helped by Simone. They really spoiled us, starting with a rich aperitif of salami, cheese, bruschetta, chips, and accompanied by a good Vermentino or beer for those who wanted... stopping in strategic places and taking us to the coves in a dinghy, even to the pink beach! Wow a wonder! Serving delicious pasta, offering coffee, myrtle... in short I can only say, thank you guys x this wonderful excursion! I highly recommend 👍🏻

26 Aug 2024 | Catamaran sunset tour with aperitif in the Gulf of Alghero

A perfect evening on/in the water

I recently had the pleasure of experiencing an incredible sunset catamaran trip, and I can't recommend it highly enough! From start to finish, the journey was nothing short of amazing. The hosts were exceptionally polite and attentive, making sure that every guest felt welcome and comfortable throughout the sailing.nnThe combination of breathtaking views, excellent service, and delectable food and wine makes it a standout experience. I would recommend it to everyone!

catamaran trip sardinia

SARDINIA IN CATAMARAN

"one day it happened that my life grew gloomy, and, fleeing to bright peace, i left for the island where the wind makes landscape. it was an enchantment.", gaston vuillier, catamaran charter in sardinia.

I have been sailing the sea since I was a child, and I can guarantee you that around the world you will not find clearer water than that the one in North Sardinia. It ranges from dazzling azur to deep blue, via the emerald green that gives its name to this magnificent stretch of sea, the Emerald Coast , perfect for a sailing vacation.

Not to be missed is the tour of the renowed Maddalena Archipelago , while it is possible to push southward to Tavolara , or westward by heading over Asinara Island .

Our base is within the Marina of Portisco , in the heart of the Emerald Coast and just a twenty-minute drive from Olbia airport.

Catamaran Charter Sardinia

Maddalena Archipelago

A catamaran vacation in Sardinia around Maddalena Archipelago is a sailing lover's dream, so much so that the area is home to numerous sailing schools. The wind playfully wedges between the 60 islands, shaping the rocks into the strangest shapes through millennia of erosion.

The archipelago was promoted to a national park in 1994 to protect the incredible natural environment that is home to more than 1,000 animal and plant species.

Catamaran Charter in La Maddalena

Spargi, Budelli, Rizzoli and Santa Maria

Renting one of our catamarans you will embark from Santa Teresa di Gallura , a beautiful little harbor wedged into a deep fjord that backs it from all winds.

Only an hour's sailing away awaits the wild Spargi Island , an unspoiled paradise dotted with tiny sandy coves. Prominent are the enchanting Cala Corsara  (2), in which wind-smoothed rocks take on the most diverse forms, Cala Granara on the shore of which a cute little wild pig lives, and the Love Beach With very fine sand with pinkish highlights.

A little further north on the island of Budelli , you will find the world-famous Pink Beach (3), among the most spectacular in Sardinia, which owes its name to billions of tiny bioclasts that give it this distinctive color. Unfortunately, mass tourism has largely deprived it of the pink hue, making it necessary to close it to the public. Behind the bay lives Mauro da Budelli, the friendly janitor and the island's only inhabitant for 40 years.

On the island of Razzoli we will stop in the lonely Cala Lunga , at the bottom of a fjord more than a mile deep, while on the adjacent island of Santa Maria we will anchor the catamaran in the bay of the same name with a large sandy beach.

The body of water between the three islands is called the Porto Madonna (4), a true paradise with clear water and a breathtaking scenery that will catapult you to a distant world.

Catamaran charter in Budelli, Sardinia

La Maddalena, Santo Stefano and Caprera

Your Maddalena  (9) is the largest island in the archipelago of the same name, as well as the only one with a real settlement. The town was founded in 1770, and its cobblestone streets are lined with elegant mansions full of trendy bars and boutique shopping.Stopping in the quaint little harbor will be a welcome change of scenery after a full sailing day. The rest of the island is no less beautiful, thanks to Cala Francese , overlooking an ancient granite quarry, the equipped beach of Stagno Torto , and the thousand shades of blue that lap the islet of Giardinelli (5).

Santo Stefano is a small island to the south of the country, once entirely devoted to military activities. Here in the lonely Villamarina Cove , in the midst of the maquis you will find a huge granite bust of Costanzo Ciano, a peculiar relic abandoned since the years of fascism.

The island of Caprera is such a concentration of pristine beauty that it was chosen as the last home by Giuseppe Garibaldi, the hero of two worlds, until the day of his death on June 2, 1882. The Garibaldi Compendium preserves its remains and has been converted to a very interesting museum.

Here dozens of small beaches would make any sea lover fall in love with the island: the most famous is Cala Coticcio (6), nicknamed by locals "Tahiti beach" for the incredible turquoise water. On the western side we anchor the catamaran at Cala Napoletana , collected and solitary, and in the large bay of Cala Garibaldi . Then again to  Cala Portese or of the two seas (7), where water laps both sides of the inlet, and at Porto Palma  (8), home of the historic Centro Velico Caprera, Italy's oldest sailing school.

catamaran trip sardinia

Gulf of Olbia and Tavolara

Continuing southward we bypass the steep Cape Figari , from the top of which Guglielmo Marconi made the first experiments on radio transmissions, to find ourselves in the Gulf of Olbia dotted with many coves, such as the spectacular Moorish Cove covered by a centuries-old pine forest.

On the bow of our catamaran towers the iconic silhouette of the island of Tavolara , an imposing granite mountain that contrasts beautifully with the bright green of juniper and rosemary. At its base stretches a tongue of fine sand, with the island's only facilities including the restaurant "Da Tonino," goliardically proclaimed king of Tavolara.

Our catamaran vacation continues toward Molara Island , also a protected area for scenic beauty, and its incredible natural pools , a very clear sandy oasis in the northwestern part of the island.

In the Gulf of Olbia, there are not only dreamy beaches, but also quaint little villages in which to refuel, such as Aranci Gulf , a small harbor with colorful houses awash in the scents of fresh fish, and the pretty seaside village Porto San Paolo .

Closing off this stretch of sea is the Capo Coda Cavallo , with its large white beach from which to admire the spectacular scenery of the marine protected area.

Catamaran rental in Sardinia in Tavolara

Asinara and Stintino

The northwest coast of Sardinia offers some of the most beautiful bays on the island, world-renowned for their caribbean-like beauty. The beach La Pelosa in Stintino certainly needs no introduction, thanks to the very long shallow sandy bottom that gives the water a dazzling blue color. Here you will spend hours of relaxing vacation lulled by the sea aboard our catamaran. Next to its big sister rises the island of the Pelosetta from which stands out the iconic aragonese tower 1578.

The national park of Asinara is an unspoiled place where millennial peace reigns. From the verdant hills rises the former maximum-security prison, while all around white donkeys graze, along with wild boar and horses. The western part faces steep cliffs while the eastern coast opens to wonderful sandy coves, such as Cala Oliva , on which rests a pretty village of white cottages, and the spectacular Cala Sabina , reachable only from land as it is an integral reserve.

Among the nearby landings, it is impossible not to mention Castelsardo , voted one of the most beautiful villages in Sardinia. The Doria Castle , built in 1270, is a true architectural spectacle overlooking the Gulf of Asinara. The interior is perfectly preserved, and contains the interesting museum of Mediterranean weaving.

Alghero | Sardegna

The city of Alghero was founded in 1102 by a powerful Genoese family, the Doria.

Subsequently, in 1353, the Catalan-Aragonese defeated the Genoese fleet in a bloody naval battle off Porto Conte, which ended with the occupation of Alghero. Since then, a form of Catalan language has been spoken in our city, which has gradually transformed into a local dialect still widely used.

In the old city , still protected by the mighty walls, you can still breathe the air of those times, together with the scents of typical cuisine from the many characteristic restaurants. In the historic center , nothing is missing to spend beautiful evenings, among shopping and outdoor aperitifs in front of unforgettable sunsets.

The beaches are really many, characterized by white sand and crystal clear waters, you can choose the comfort of a bathing establishment or live the experience of a small adventure in search of the cove of your dreams, exploring the rocky coves of which the coast is very rich.

Alghero has the advantage of offering a truly unique range of tourist opportunities on the island, because it is a small jewel set in a unique coast that makes it even more valuable.

A few kilometers from the city it is possible to visit very important archaeological sites , to make exciting excursions , including a visit to the Caves of Neptune in the Capo Caccia massif which dominates the protected marine area, a truly unmissable sight.

The emotions and opportunities to experience them are too many to list, but our staff will be happy to give you all the information and advice you will need.

You just have to come and see us, the rest is very easy!

  • Departure: Via Case Sparse, Localita Punta Sardegna, 07020 Palau
  • Departure Time: 9:45 AM
  • Includes: Lunch, bottled water, alcoholic beverages, coffee and/or tea, soda, restroom on board, snorkeling gear

If this is your first time in Sardinia, you owe it to yourself to check out the Catamaran Alice from Porto Rafael-Palau to Maddalena Archipelago tour.

This tour lasts all day, so make a day free to check out this fantastic experience where you’ll get to see the ins and outs of this incredible place without the crowds. The guides provide everything you need for a fantastic day both on the water and sand!

You’ll start out in the morning by meeting your guides at the port so you can board your state-of-the-art catamaran complete with snorkeling gear, snacks, alcohol, water, coffee, and restrooms on board.

Trust me when I say that this is one of the more “luxurious” tours I’ve had of its kind, with comfort and cleanliness in mind in every regard.

After a quick briefing, you’ll set off for the island of Spargi first, where you’ll have the chance to snorkel and splash around the clear waters. One of the coolest sites you’ll get to see on this tour is the Spiaggia Rosa, or the world-famous “Pink Beach”!

As you may be able to guess by the name, it’s known for its coral-hued beach thanks to the type of granite that are in the area.

Expand To See More See Less

Next up is the Spiaggia di Cavalieri, which is characterized by the mirror-like water, locked in between various other islands and perfect for swimming around.

The islands of Razzoli and Santa Maria are next, who are joined yet have very distinct charms that set them apart from one another.

Razzoli is known for its majestic cliffs, and Moore sculpture-like rock formations, along with a striking lighthouse that overlooks the Bocche di Bonifacio.

Santa Maria has ancient homes and a modest convent and was once a refuge for Benedictine monks fleeing Bonifacio in the Middle Ages.

If that’s what you’re looking for, check out the Private Boat Tour of the La Maddalena Archipelago ! The thing about Sardinia is that your experience will vary quite a bit depending on the size of both the boat you’re traveling on and how many people are in your group.

If you’re on a large vessel or are coming with a large group of people, you simply won’t be able to get to see as much as you would otherwise.

The size of the boat on this tour allows you to get much closer to less-crowded coves, exploring those “hidden gem” spots that most tourists don’t get to see. The captain and crew were simply incredible, with their friendliness, attention to detail, and professionalism throughout.

Not only that, but they set up a delicious buffet lunch for us to enjoy onboard with plenty of local wine and dishes we hadn’t tried before! I find this to be perfect for a little “romantic” date with a significant other, as you can have the entire boat and experience to yourself.

Stop first at the Isola di Spargi which is known for its beautiful coves, so make sure to get that camera out and ready.

You’ll then cruise onward to the Budelli Archipelago Maddalena, which is known for its pink beach. Unfortunately, you won’t get to stop as it’s an important reserve, but you will get to see the bright turquoise waters and the small, charming island of Santa Maria.

3. Maddalena Archipelago Catamaran Tour with Lunch From Sardinia

  • Duration: 6.5 hours
  • Departure: Porto Turistico di Palau, Pontoon M.
  • Departure Time:  10:00 AM
  • Includes: Captain, fuel, entry permit to park, snorkeling gear, appetizer and lunch, wine, bottled water, insurance

What I love about this area is that if you’re feeling overwhelmed or burnt out by the hustle and bustle of mainland life, there are ways to escape it.

For example, the Maddalena Archipelago is a wonderfully tranquil respite where you’ll leave the chaos behind and get to revel in the natural beauty of this area. The Maddalena Archipelago Catamaran Tour with Lunch from Sardinia tour is a great way to spend the day and be back by dinnertime!

Your vessel for the day is a state-of-the-art catamaran that I noticed has been very well-maintained, clean, and very comfortable. The captain and crew were some of my favorites, only elevating the tour experience with their senses of humor and friendliness.

As this is also a small-group tour, you don’t have to worry about just being another head in the crowd and really get to benefit from personalized attention.

As the boat sails across the clear, turquoise waters, you can choose to lounge around on the deck and soak up the rays or take in views from the covered rooftop.

As you cruise around, the captain will point out various points of interest, like the mythical Budelli or the historic Santa Maria. You’ll take intermittent breaks at designated locations to hop into the water with snorkeling gear and explore the vibrant underwater world that lies beneath.

Once you climb back onboard, you and the rest of your party will indulge in a traditional Sardinian smorgasbord of savory pastas, warm bread, fresh fruit, Vermentino wine, and plenty of coffee and sweets!

This tour made me feel like I was a kid again, splashing around in the water, taking a dingy over to the beach, and learning about these magnificent places from professionals. Overall, this is a very special tour that will easily make for a memorable day in Sardinia.

4. Day Trip on a Sailing Catamaran in Sardinia

  • Duration: 9 to 10 hours
  • Departure:  Molo Brin, 07026 Olbia SS
  • Departure Time: 9:00 AM
  • Includes: Use of kayaks, use of SUP, lunch, use of snorkeling gear

This next tour is indeed one of the longest out there, but you’re also simply going to see and do more than the others. If you don’t mind spending all day out in the sun venturing around, then this tour should be at the top of your list.

The Day Trip on a Sailing Catamaran in Sardinia Tour  not only involves breathtaking scenery, but a friendly captain, mouthwatering food, great company, and a lot of learning.

This tour is perfect for any age of background, seamlessly balancing relaxation, learning, adventure, and natural beauty all into one memorable excursion.

Our captain immediately felt like he was a longtime friend, with his crew consisting of his son and his dog (!!) who only made us feel more at home.

Starting out early in the morning, you can cruise around at your leisure and see the different locations all while avoiding the crowds that appear later in the day.

The small-group catamaran was very comfortable and I could tell it was in great condition by how easily it floated over the crystal-clear waters.

As you cruise around, you’ll get to munch on a tasty lunch consisting of various traditional dishes from Sardinia as you enjoy the jaw-dropping background.

I also appreciated that they really let you have a say in the activities you’d like to partake in rather than everyone having to go on a cookie-cutter tour.

You can simply spend time onboard relaxing in either the sun or shade, or head into the water for some kayaking, paddleboarding, and/or snorkeling. Even if you’ve never done any of the sports before, the crew was incredibly friendly and helped us learn how to paddle properly!

Capped at just 8 participants, this is a tour that feels like good friends are simply taking you out for a day of fun and sightseeing!

5. Snorkeling Day from Palau Sardinia

  • Departure:  Via Riva dei Lestrigoni, 07020 Palau SS
  • Departure Time: Check with tour operator
  • Includes: Lunch, use of snorkeling gear, bottled water, snacks, coffee and tea, all fees and taxes

Whether you’re an absolute snorkeling pro or have never done the activity before, you’re in luck. The Snorkeling Day from Palau Sardinia tour is made for everyone, no matter how experienced you are!

This 7-hour adventure packs a ton into just 1 day, and is perfect if it’s your first time in this part of the world. Designed for family and friends alike, this day of exploration is limited to just 9 passengers so you get a customized experience tailor-made to fit your interests.

The vessel for the day is a 13-meter motorboat which has enough room to lounge around comfortably while still being small enough to access the lesser-seen parts of the area.

The spacious bow sundeck is complete with comfortable cushions to lounge on, while the aft cockpit offers some shade from the awning.

Fuel up with a tasty lunch, snacks, coffee, and tea complete with some al fresco dining as the sea breeze blows through your hair as you sit on the plush side sofas or the dining table.

Throughout the day, you’ll get to make three to four stops that all offer something different from the others. On these stops, you can choose to go for a swim, or even try snorkeling with the included snorkeling gear onboard.

Whether you’re traveling with children or a group of friends, you’ll love this day out on the water exploring with the fun and helpful crew. Oh, and another cool little part of the day was the visit from the ice cream boat which is like an ice cream truck on water!

This tour exemplified the quaint charm and world-class beauty unique to Sardinia in quite possibly the most convenient way possible.

Sardinia Travel Guide

Planning tips.

Sardinia is a unique region of Italy with a significant level of political autonomy. You’ll discover important cultural differences between Sardinia and the mainland, including an indigenous language that is as widely used as Italian. Here are 5 tips to help you plan your stay.

Tip #1: Consider all the factors when deciding when to visit Sardinia

The best time for beach holidays in Sardinia is during the summer high season and the shoulder seasons, between May and November.

This is also the time when you’ll find budget air tickets. However, the beaches will be crowded during the middle of the season.

Because temperatures reach around 35 0 C during July and August, the summer is a bad time to consider hiking adventures. Avid hikers should aim to come in spring or fall, say September and October.

Also, take note of the dates of Sardinia’s many festivals. If you’re particularly interested in wine or traditional food, you can arrange your visit to coincide with one of the major festivals celebrating local vineyards or cuisine.

Religiously minded visitors may want to come when one of the major saints are celebrated. The most famous religious celebration, the festival of Sant’Efisio, is celebrated on 1 st May.

Tip #2: Be prepared for the heat along the coast

If you do decide to come during midsummer, be well prepared for the rising heat and strong sunlight along the coast. During the day, the air temperature can rise rapidly and without warning.

Ensure you prepare lots of bottled water to stay hydrated. Also, you’ll need a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, and possibly a parasol.

Tip #3: Watch out for unique souvenirs

Cagliari is a great place to watch out for local art and craft products. The whole island boasts rich artistic traditions, so you’ll find great local craft stores in most major settlements.

But locally produced wines are also in demand as souvenirs. Cannonau Agriolas and La Cala are popular Sardinian wine varieties.

Tip #4: Book in advance, especially during summer

Sardinia gets crowded during the summer. If you want to avoid disappointment, book the hotel room you want and any tours you’re interested in well in advance.

Tip #5: Be prepared for the culture shock

Sardinia really isn’t like the rest of Italy. For a start, the locals speak a different language. It sounds more like Spanish than Italian.

And that strange language changes rapidly as you travel around the island. Also, Sardinia is like a time vault. You’ll find women wearing headscarves reminiscent of the Middle East because the island was once ruled by the Moors. Other ancient traditions mean that you’ll find quaint and unusual cultural oddities all around the island.

Towns in Sardinia

This is a large town on the northwestern coast that boasts a lively nightlife at any time of the year. Much of the fun is centered around its many bars along the Spiaggia di San Giovanni beachfront, such as the top-rated Maracaibo Cocktail Bar and Kelu Lounge Bar.

The bars close between 1 and 2 am. During summer, in the south of the city, some waterfront bars are open until 4 am. Also during high season, late night clubs operate on the outskirts of the town.

Costa Smeralda

This area of coastline is known for the 3 resort towns of Baja Sardinia, Porto Cervo, and Porto Rotondo. The whole area is known for its trendy clubs and beach parties and is favored by the young.

Popular clubs include Billionaire Porto Cervo , Ritual Club Porto Cervo , and Sottovento Baja Sardinia .

Santa Teresa di Gallura

This port town on the north coast is where you’ll find some of the most popular nightclubs in Sardinia, like Estasi’s . Bar Central 80 is a well-known bar on the main square where you can grab an outdoor table and people watch until the early hours.

San Teodoro

This is a small town on the northern coast that boasts some of the liveliest nightlife on the island. Check out the Ambra Day Bar with its live music, Bal Harbour Beach Bar , and Gallo Blu Restaurant and Bar.

Villasimius

This town on the south coast is renowned for its beach parties and clubs. Being only 30 miles from Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia, Villasimius has become a popular destination for Sardinian clubbers.

There are plenty of clubs to choose from, like Kimi, Lagoon Club , and Tigo’.

What Will I See on a Sardinia Boat Tour?

The coastline of Sardinia is beautiful, and many visitors join boat trips to explore the sea caves, shipwrecks, and small islands. If you’re lucky, you might see dolphins offshore.

If you visit Caprera island, you can see Garibaldi’s house, which is now a memorial chapel and museum. This famous general was the main force behind uniting Italy, which had been split into small city-states and kingdoms since the collapse of the Roman Empire.

Geological features

Sardinia is rich in fascinating geological features. One of the most impressive is Bear Rock (Capo d’Orso), which is a short drive from Palau.

While occasionally you’ll see rock formations that proport to resemble an eagle or a lion, this natural feature truly does resemble a bear.

It’s so similar that you might be tempted to think it’s an ancient statue weathered by the passing of time.

The limestone bedrock around the island contains many caves that are interesting to visit. Some are sea caves that may only be accessed on boat tours. Others can be entered by climbing.

The most famous cave in Sardinia is Neptune’s Grotto outside Alghero, which is reached by descending 600 steps. It is well worth the hike to see its fantastic, sparkly stalagmites and stalactites.

Grotto di Ispinigoli is another well-known cave system that boasts 5 miles of caverns to explore. Many Nuragic and Phoenician artifacts have been discovered in this cave during archaeological excavations.

We are waiting for you to enjoy a catamaran excursion to the National Park of La Maddalena with us.

Once we leave Palau Harbour we sail along the coast of Porto Faro and Porto Rafael Village. After 50 minutes of navigation we arrive to our first destination: Spargi Island. This island is completely uninhabited and it is reachable just by little boats. In Spargi there are many little bays (Cala Corsara, Cala Soraya, Cala Granara, Cala Connari) with sandy beaches and cristal clear waters. We choose one of these bays and we do our first swim/stop that lasts one hour and an half. Here you can decide to go to the beach by dinghy with the crew or you can stay on board and swim/snorkelling from the boat. The navigation lasts 45 minutes while we sail through the Strairs of Bonifacio. Once we arrive to Budelli island we pass in front of la Spiaggia Rosa* where we can do pictures from the boat.

*LA SPIAGGIA ROSA is closed from 1998 and it is not allowed to walk on the sand or to swim in the bay.  Anyway it is possible to do a walk behind la Spiaggia Rosa following the limitations.

The best one-week Sardinia itinerary

Planning the perfect one-week sardinia road trip.

Rugged, sun-drenched coastlines , prehistoric ruins, and some of the Mediterranean's most pristine beaches – Sardinia is a great place to explore. A week-long road trip is the perfect way to experience this unique island. Here’s our favorite way to spend a week in Sardinia:

Day 1: Cagliari

The first day of this Sardinia itinerary starts at the Cagliari Airport, where you will pick up your rental car. Start by exploring Caligaria , the island's capital that's equal parts medieval charm and modern Mediterranean with a history spanning over 2,000 years. Here you’ll find lively piazzas and narrow streets that are great for exploring.

Start your day with a walk through the historic Castello district. Here you can visit the Bastione di Saint Remy, a limestone fortification that offers panoramic views of the city and the sea. Make sure to also see the nearby Cattedrale di Santa Maria, a 13th-century cathedral featuring a unique blend of Pisan-Romanesque and Baroque architecture.

Day 2: Costa Rei

After breakfast, you'll set off on a scenic 1-hour drive east to Costa Rei, enjoying some stunning coastal views along the way. This area is famous for its pristine beaches, but there’s much more to explore. Start your day at the Scoglio di Peppino, a distinctive rock formation that's become a symbol of Costa Rei. From there, you can take a short hike to the Torre di Sarrabus, a 16th-century Spanish watchtower that offers panoramic views of the coastline. This tower is part of a very old defensive system.

In the afternoon, head over to Cala Pira, a secluded beach surrounded by Mediterranean scrub and known for its crystal-clear waters. Day 3: Cala Gonone

The third day of this Sardinia itinerary starts with a  2.5-hour drive to Cala Gonone, a picturesque town in the Gulf of Orosei.

Once you arrive, start with a visit to the Grotta del Bue Marino, a series of sea caves known for their stunning stalactites and stalagmites. These caves were once home to the rare Mediterranean monk seal, which is how they got their name.

If you’re more in the mood for hiking, head out to the Gola di Gorropu, often referred to as Europe’s Grand Canyon. This impressive gorge, with walls reaching up to 500 meters, offers trails for all fitness levels and showcases some of Sardinia's most dramatic interior landscapes.

For dinner, make your way to Ristorante Ispinigoli, which is set in a natural cave for a truly unique dining experience. Be sure to try their roasted suckling pig, a local Sardinian specialty. Cala Gonone has a relaxed, coastal vibe with just the right amount of adventure, making it a great stop on your Sardinian trip.

Day 4: Olbia

Day four starts with a 1.5-hour drive north to Olbia. Once you’ve checked into your accommodation, head over to the port for a boat trip through the stunning Arcipelago di La Maddalena. This protected group of islands and islets is home to some of the most pristine beaches in the Mediterranean.

As you sail through the turquoise waters, keep an eye out for dolphins —they’re often spotted in this area. Also be sure to visit the famous Spiaggia Rosa (Pink Beach) on Budelli Island, with its unique rose-colored sand made from coral and shell fragments.

In the late afternoon, return to Olbia and explore the town's historic center. Here you can take a stroll along Corso Umberto, the main shopping street, where you can browse local handicrafts and sample traditional Sardinian sweets like seadas , a delicious fried pastry filled with cheese and drizzled with honey. For dinner, stop by Bacchus Restaurant, known for its excellent wine selection and traditional Sardinian dishes.

Where to stay in Olbia

  • Best for a boutique stay:  Hotel Stefania Boutique Hotel by the Beach . This elegant beachfront property offers stylish rooms with sea views. Its intimate atmosphere, excellent restaurant, and proximity to Pittulongu Beach make it perfect for a luxurious, relaxing getaway.

Day 5: Olbia

The fifth day is for exploring Olbia and the surrounding areas more. You can start your morning with a visit to the Chiesa di San Simplicio, a stunning Romanesque church and one of Sardinia's most significant medieval landmarks.

If you want to get a feel for local life, try to visit Olbia's lively market, which takes place on Tuesday and Saturday mornings. You can wander through stalls packed with fresh produce, local cheeses, and traditional crafts. It's the perfect chance to try some regional favorites like pecorino cheese and bottarga (cured fish roe).

From there, you can take a short drive to Costa Smeralda , famous for its upscale resorts and breathtaking beaches. Our recommendation is to spend some time relaxing at Spiaggia del Principe, a gorgeous crescent-shaped beach with clear turquoise waters.

Travel tip: While the Costa Smeralda is beautiful, it can be quite expensive. Consider packing a picnic to enjoy on one of the public beaches to save money.

Day 6: Alghero

Spend today exploring Alghero, often called "Little Barcelona" because of its rich Catalan influence. Begin your day with a stroll along the ancient city walls, where you'll get amazing views of the sea and the charming old town. Make a stop at the Torre di Porta Terra, a historic tower that now features a multimedia museum about Alghero's past.

For lunch, head to La Botteghina, a cozy spot in the heart of the old town. Don't miss out on their Catalan-style lobster, a dish that highlights Alghero's Spanish roots. Afterward, wander through the local market to check out fresh produce and Sardinian treats.

In the afternoon, hop on a boat to Capo Caccia and visit Neptune's Grotto, a stunning sea cave filled with impressive stalactites and stalagmites. If you're feeling adventurous, climb the 656 steps of the Escala del Cabirol (Goat's Steps) for incredible views of the coastline.

Where to stay in Alghero

  • Best for a boutique stay:  San Francesco Heritage Hotel . This elegant hotel occupies a restored 15th-century monastery. Its central location and charming courtyard provide a unique, intimate experience.
  • Best for spa relaxation:  Hotel La Margherita & SPA . This contemporary hotel boasts a luxurious spa center with various treatments and facilities. Its rooftop terrace offers stunning sea views.
  • Best for budget-friendly comfort:  Hotel Alguer . This affordable option offers clean, comfortable rooms in a convenient location. With friendly staff and a short walk to the beach and old town, it's ideal.

Day 7: Alghero

For the final day, you've got two great options to choose from. If you're into wine, you can take a tour of the nearby Sella & Mosca winery, one of the biggest in Europe. You'll get a taste of Sardinian winemaking traditions and sample some fantastic local wines, including the famous Cannonau.

If history is more your thing, you could visit the Nuraghe di Palmavera, an ancient site with impressive prehistoric stone structures that are unique to Sardinia. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the island’s Nuragic civilization, with around forty "domus de janas" (fairy houses) carved into the rock dating back to 3300-2500 BC.

To wrap up your trip, treat yourself to a farewell dinner at The Kings in Alghero's old town. Their tasting menu highlights the best of Sardinian cuisine, with fresh seafood, locally sourced meats, and traditional desserts — a perfect way to end your stay.

How to get around in Sardinia

Forget public transport – to really see Sardinia, you'll want your own set of wheels. Renting a car is the best option as it gives you the freedom to veer off the beaten track and discover those hidden coves and mountain villages that make the island so special.

Brace yourself for some seriously jaw-dropping coastal drives. The twisting roads hugging Sardinia's rugged coastline offer fantastic views.

For island-hopping, the best way to get around is to jump on an organized boat tour. It's less hassle and you'll get to learn a lot more about the area along the way.

Where to stay in Sardinia

If you're on a budget, inland towns can often offer more affordable options without sacrificing charm.

For a more authentic experience, consider staying at an agriturismo (farm stay). You'll get a real feel for rural life, and most of the time, you’ll be treated to delicious home-cooked meals made with fresh local ingredients.

If you're after luxury, check out the resorts in Costa Smeralda. Just be ready to pay premium prices, especially in the summer. Booking ahead is a smart move if you want the best spots.

  • By plane : Sardinia has three main airports – Cagliari Elmas (CAG) in the south, Olbia Costa Smeralda (OLB) in the northeast, and Alghero-Fertilia (AHO) in the northwest.
  • By ferry: If you prefer a scenic journey, ferries run from various Italian mainland ports. The main operators are Tirrenia, Moby Lines, and Grimaldi Lines. An overnight ferry can even save you on accommodation.

When to visit Sardinia

Spring ( April to May ) and autumn ( September to October ) are ideal for visiting. The weather is mild, ranging from 59°F to 75°F (15°C to 24°C), and you won’t have to fight for space on the beaches. These seasons are also perfect if you’re into hiking or biking.

If your main goal is beach time, summer ( June to August ) is when you’ll get the most sun. Just be prepared for crowds and higher prices, as it’s the peak tourist season. The island will be buzzing, but everything comes at a premium during this time.
