The “Tigress” and “Wind Drum” are custom built, big ocean going catamarans specially designed for exciting day sail charters and whale watching. We brought “Tigress” 5000 miles through the Panama Canal just for you to enjoy.  We also offer the sporty “Wind Drum”  catamaran which is the fastest sailing adventure in the US.

Check out our “Our Boats” page for more info.

  • Swift and stable design ensures a comfortable and exhilarating ride without the "rolling" & "heeling" (leaning) that often causes seasickness on other boats.
  • Kick your shoes off and feel the warm deck under your feet. Enjoy our special bow trampolines designed for sunbathing, and lounging around watching the sea life, and water rush by.
  • Shady, warm, cushioned seating area for relaxing out of the wind and sun aboard "Tigress." "Wind Drum" offers more speed, and a bit more sun and wind.
  • On "Tigress" our deep and roomy seating area is fully protected with a windshield, and is especially comfortable for elderly people, and both catamarans are safe for children.
  • Since our catamarans are very fast boats, we are able to see more sights during your sail, and also sailing faster is more FUN.

Sailing   San   Diego   and   Beyond

San   diego   catamaran     c h a r t e r  , san diego catamaran charter options.

West Coast Multihulls offers visitors the best in San Diego sailing charter vacations. Sun, temperate climate, a vibrant city and some of the best cruising waters in America make San Diego Bay the premier charter destination on the West Coast.

Captained Charters

Leave all your worries behind as you and your favorite people cruise the bay or ocean in style. For a crewed catamaran charter in San Diego, NO SAILING EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED. You will board one of our spacious catamarans and simply enjoy the ride as you explore San Diego Bay, the ocean outside the bay, or even head off to Mission Bay, Catalina or other points of interest.

Captained charters mean that the yacht is rented with a professional crew consisting of at least a licensed captain who is responsible for the maneuvering of the yacht. In some cases the captain is aided by other crew members as well. Typically they operate solo.

Bareboat Charters

You and your crew are free to choose your own itinerary, and experience the thrill of full command of a modern sailing catamaran.

We accept ASA 114 Certifications. Note that charterers holding ASA 114 Certification, but lacking prior bareboat catamaran charter experience will be required to hire one of our licensed captains for a supplemental training at the beginning of their first bareboat charter with WCM.

Charter Itinerary Ideas for Sailing San Diego

Whether a bareboat charter, or a private charter with captain, the choice of where to go is largely yours to make. So, we get asked all the time:

What should we do? Where should we go? What is there to do when sailing around San Diego?

There is plenty to do, and the specifics have to do more with your interests than anything else. So let us know what you’re interested in, how you like to spend your time, and we help you craft an itinerary that makes the most of what this great sailing area has to offer.

Scroll through some of these great ideas…

catamaran ride san diego

Key things to consider:

  • If your group includes kids, don’t try to do to much, in particular sailing. Make sure to plan for plenty of water play and/or beach time.
  • If your group includes those prone to sea sickness, plan to stay inside the bay. They’ll have MUCH more fun, and you can get in a lot of great sailing without worrying about everyone else’s comfort.
  • If you’re new to sailing, and new to San Diego, you’ll have a licensed captain along that is very familiar with all the great spots to go. Explain to them what your preferences are, and then sit back and let them do all the work!
  • Find a San Diego festival, conference or concert, and schedule your charter around this event. It’s a unique way to experience San Diego, and you’ll have better lodging than anyone else!

Here are some sample San Diego sailing itineraries to get your gears turning:

Or… a weeklong coastal hopping getaway to Catalina Day 1: SD-Oceanside Day 2: O-Side to Newport Day 3: Newport to Two Harbors, Catalina Day 4: Explore Catalina Day 5: Two Harbors to Avalon, fun ashore Day 6: Avalon to Mission Bay Day 7: Mission Bay to WCM Harbor Island

catamaran ride san diego

Long Weekend San Diego Bay Day One: Sail from WCM to Glorietta Bay at Coronado, Wander the beaches ashore, do a pub crawl, get in a game of golf or cruise the cute downtown area and sample the excellent variety of restaurants.

Day Two: Start your day with a surfing session right across the road. Have a lovely midday sail past embarcadero and Nimitz on the way to La Playa Cove, tucked behind Shelter Island. Explore the marinas in the dinghy, stop by Fathom Brewing and Bistro on the fishing pier, and relax on the hook. If you time it right, you might be able to take in a concert at Humphrey’s from your dinghy – a classic San Diego experience.

Day Three: Wake late, make breakfast aboard, and take a short morning sail out to the ocean to look for whales and dolphins. Time your return with the tide and zoom back into the bay all the way back to the WCM base at Harbor Islands Safe Harbor Sunroad.

Long Weekend Mission Bay: Your Mission, should you accept it, is to grab your catamaran from WCM in San Diego Bay, and sail north (about 9 miles or so) to Mission Bay, specifically Mariner’s Cove, where you will partake in beach living at it’s finest. Wake with the sun, swim, walk the beach, surf, grab cocktails, eat a nice meal ashore. Rinse and repeat. This message will not self-destruct, but you might if you don’t plan your escape to Mission Bay today.

Heard Around The Docks...

I wish I could give our experience 10 stars. 11 ladies took a morning cruise for my bachelorette, and it was the perfect laid back morning I was looking for. The boat was beyond amazing: plenty of lounge area, a big table for eating, a fridge to load everything into and speakers for jams... everyone had the best time! Amanda H
Our first Sailing adventure was with West Coast Multihulls, and it was easily the most remarkable experience of our lives. With 2 kids, we were unsure where to start. WCM and Captain Ryan both went above and beyond to ensure that my entire family enjoyed every aspect of our trip. It's all our kids want to talk about since getting back on land. We can't wait to come back! Josh C
I took my wife and her friends out for her birthday. Capitan Trevor is the man, and made sure everyone had the best time possible. The next day she told me it was her best birthday yet. I highly recommend! jtmartin77 - via TripAdvisor

Triton Charters – The Newest San Diego Catamaran Cruise

Welcome aboard the new kid in town. Big, bold, and beautiful, she is the Triton – one of San Diego’s latest additions to our magnificent waterfront. If you are looking for a fun San Diego Catamaran Cruise or Charter option, the Triton is a perfect choice.

Teal sail with white writing: Triton Charter - San Diego Catamaran Cruise

About the Triton Catamaran

The Triton is the newest and largest catamaran yacht in San Diego waters. This impressive 75-foot vessel can host up to 105 guests for fun and adventure on the San Diego Bay. There’s no better way to enjoy the beauty of the city than from the sea, take in a spectacular San Diego sunset , or admire the stunning nighttime of our skyline reflecting in the bay.

Formerly berthed at a large Texas lake, this massive catamaran was carefully transported overland. This epic 38-day trek took her through farm lands and along country roads to its new home on Shelter Island. She was launched into San Diego Bay on August 1st 2020, fulfilling the lifelong goal of one of her owners and lifetime San Diego resident, Zach Funston. He’d always dreamed of owning a charter sailboat and plying the San Diego waters for business and fun.

Welcome on board!

The Triton is truly an impressive vessel. Sporting a striking blue and white color scheme with classy lines, she’s more reminiscent of Mediterranean sailboats cruising the cerulean waters of the Greek Islands.  Nautical luxury and comfort blend in perfect harmony with impeccable attention to detail.

The cabin over the twin hulls features a state-of-the-art 13-seat lighted bar, spacious dance floor, and an advanced sound system. Private tables with bench seats aft of the cabin provide ample seating for eating and drinking in comfort while enjoying unobstructed views. All in all, the stately catamaran can provide seating for up to 70 people from bow to stern.

The Triton was built for group enjoyment, whether on a sunset sail, a swim and snorkel adventure, or a special event party.  With fun in mind, the Triton’s drop-down stairs and built-in running water slide are ideal for getting more intrepid adventurers down into the water with ease.

Bar on the Triton Catamaran with several people

For those who love the wind in their face, additional nautical bean bag cushion seats forward of the cabin provide fabulous seating for relaxing in the sun or under the stars.  A sturdy trampoline netting links the twin bows providing more cushioned seating for those who prefer being closer to the water.

And of course, with safety a primary concern, Triton Charter includes a Coast Guard Certified Captain and crew members to assist guests on their journey.

Ticketed San Diego Catamaran Cruise

Triton’s Ticketed Charters run 2 ½ hour narrated tours with departures from Shelter Island at 1:00 pm and 4:30 pm daily from Wednesday through Sunday.  With this option, guests have ample time to enjoy all the spectacular sights of America’s finest city.

Tickets may be purchased on their website, and run $55 per adult, and $15 for children ages 12 and under.

The Triton’s well-engineered layout makes their vessel ideal for hosting a variety of group sizes. Personal Experience Aboard a Sunset Sail Private Charter with Triton

Our 20-some guest private charter departed from Shelter Island about a half-hour before sunset, gliding gracefully past the hundreds of boats and yachts moored nearby. While this was a hosted experience by Triton, all opinions are my own.

Catering and Refreshments

The bar opened immediately for refreshments and was soon doing a brisk business. Remaining entirely within the calm waters of San Diego Bay, the Triton cut the water effortlessly – her twin hulls making for one comfortably smooth sail. We were treated to a spectacular San Diego sunset as the darkening skies were painted in rich hues of orange, gold, and red.

The blend of both lively and relaxing music, cocktails, and fresh sea-scented air added to the ambiance.  As darkness settled, the glittering lights of San Diego’s stunning skyline lit up the night in spectacular fashion.  The colorful tented lights from the USS Midway and the illuminated outline of the Star of India were especially impressive.  Our sunset sail truly provided a treasure trove of photo opportunities, both onboard and beyond the rails.

Aldo's Tacos Catering on Board the Triton Sunset Cruise - with San Diego Skyline in the background

Aldo’s Tacos provided a bountiful buffet on the fantail complete with carne asada, chicken, shrimp, steak, and carnitas tacos with all the fixings and side dishes.

A Fun Sunset Sail!

The cool, clear evening accompanied by a magnificent sunset and star-studded sky was magical. This is one incredible way to enjoy some time at sea, taking in the sights of our picturesque city by the bay — on San Diego’s newest luxury maritime jewel. A big thank you again to Triton Charters for inviting me on this fun San Diego Catamaran Cruise.
