Beneteau Oceanis 42CC review: from the archive

Nestling into Beneteau's centre cockpit line-up, the all-new Beneteau Oceanis 42CC promises some innovative design in a family-friendly cruiser. But is this enough to set her apart in the hotly contested 40-something size bracket? Tim Thomas sails her to find out

Product Overview

Manufacturer:.

Love ’em or loathe ’em, there’s no denying the popularity of centre cockpit yachts.

Beneteau’s current range spans sizes from 36ft to 44ft and the Beneteau Oceanis 42CC, which started building in November last year, features a new hull and some innovative design features that set her apart from her stablemates.

The first thing you notice when approaching the Beneteau Oceanis 42CC is her enormous rear end.

With her high counter stern, it is easy to assume she has been drawn with retro styling in mind, yet beneath this traditional-looking skin is one of the main innovations of the Beneteau Oceanis 42CC.

Beneteau-Oceanis-42CC-review-transom-credit-Malcolm-White

Fancy a convertible? Simply slide back the hatch, lower the transom and voila! you have an instant bathing platform.

The central part of the aft deck slides back to reveal steps, and with the help of a remote handset linked to a hydraulic powerpack, the middle pan of the transom folds down to form a bathing platform.

This neat bit of design works well and also allows for a large aft deck which would happily accommodate a couple of sunworshippers, as well as providing deep locker space either side.

The one drawback of this stern arrangement, in my view, is that it affects the aesthetics of the yacht.

beneteau catamaran 42

The rig appears to be positioned well forward as a result of the large stern.

The twin-spreader rig suddenly looks to be set very far forward, as does the centre cockpit itself, which is of an unremarkable design – albeit surprisingly deep – save for the hard windscreen over the companionway.

Although it seems as if you get a lot of boat for your money, it does give the hull rather chunky lines.

But if you can live with this – and let’s face it when you are on board it doesn’t really matter – there is no problem.

With the standard 55hp Volvo fitted, the Beneteau Oceanis 42CC was competent under power: with the revs peaked at 3,000 she pushed 8.8 knots – not enough to worry the drag-racing Ocean is 473 but still perfectly acceptable.

There is an option io go for a mighty 75hp Yanmar but unless you are bent on keeping up with the Oceanis there is little need for such excess.

The Beneteau Oceanis 42CC is happy cruising at a shade under 8 knots, with the revs just resting a smidgen over 2,000, and even at this speed she was pleasantly quiet below decks.

We had some concerns about her manoeuvrability at lower speeds with lifeless and imprecise hydraulic steering – more on that in a minute.

Under sail in a steady 10 knot breeze, the Beneteau Oceanis 42CC felt easy to handle on all points of sail.

Although we did find a problem with the test yacht in that every time the speed dropped significantly below 5 or 6 knots, under sail or power, she became difficult to hold in a straight line.

beneteau catamaran 42

Having the wheel on the bulkhead provides an interesting helm experience.

I have never been a great fan of hydraulic steering systems on smaller yachts, although it has to be said that the system is common to the whole of the CC range, and there have been few reported problems with it.

We subsequently found out that there had been a problem with air in the hydraulic plumbing of this particular yacht and work was underway to purge the system – which could make all the difference.

Sadly, there is no option for cable steering due to the complexity of running the lines through to the quadrant.

Apart from this minor glitch, she felt positive and showed her best speed on a shy reach, making around 6.5 knots.

She happily pushes to windward at a shade over 5 knots, which, considering the size of the hull and her relative heaviness, was promising given the light conditions.

Having the steering wheel on the bulkhead felt very strange indeed, although this apparently appeals to many who convert from motor cruisers.

beneteau catamaran 42

The rear end of the 42CC hides a clever bathing platform system.

But more than anything is the slight feeling of being cheated – there is barely enough deck in front to focus on, and she feels pitifully small from the helm for what is, after all, a voluminous 43-footer.

It is only when you look aft that you become aware of the tennis court behind you, and this is well worth remembering when you are trying to manoeuvre in a tight spot.

I certainly would be happier choosing the conventional helm placement, at the aft end of the cock pit, which would also make handling the main track from the helm a lot easier.

Below decks

With the cockpit moulding set forward, there is obviously going to be some compromise below decks, and so there is with the Beneteau Oceanis 42CC.

The saloon feels rather like a dentist’s waiting room, a small square, albeit one with plenty of headroom. which seems more a stopping off point between the aft and forward cabins.

beneteau catamaran 42

The saloon is on the small side, although this is a feature common to all centre cockpit yachts.

Maybe that is a little unfair, for there is plenty of room for a family to gather around the table, perhaps this was just an effect of the dark wood interior.

To some extent, this slightly truncated living space is compensated for, on our test boat at least, by two large cabins, the after one of which featured a spacious berth, good cupboard stowage, a dressing table and an ensuite head compartment running along the starboard side of the cockpit moulding.

The port side of the cockpit moulding is taken up with a competent longitudinal galley, which has enough stowage to cater for all the family’s needs on a reasonable cruise.

The navigation area is on the port side of the saloon and is a fairly standard arrangement, with its forward-facing chart table, but top marks go to the designers for including a long hull port by the table, giving plenty of natural light to help you pore over the pilot book.

beneteau catamaran 42

Natural light illuminates the nav area.

The forward cabin is offset to starboard and reels rather compact considering it is one of only two in this layout, although the berth is a good size and there is room to move about.

The fact that it does not occupy the forepeak means that the forward head can take pride of place in the bows, positioned on the centreline and with good brace points either side.

An arrangement that I personally liked, if for no other reason than the practicalities of using the head when sailing heeled on long passages.

The reaI surprise, however, comes when you lift the companionway steps to take a peak at the engine installation.

At first, access seems prohibitive, with the steps being supported on strong rams.

These nearly took my chin off when I undid the catches at the base, the hinge point is quite low down making anything more than a cursory inspection awkward.

But the secret is in a large access panel at the back from the aft cabin.

Crawling into the engine compartment on all fours, you are suddenly struck by the amount of space in here, with crouching headroom, nearly enough space to swing a cat and room for every add-on you could think of – watermaker, generator, air-con would all fit in here without a problem.

It also means that you have ample room to work on the engine, even if you wanted to strip the thing down and rebuild it (brave. indeed).

The Beneteau Oceanis 42CC was originally intended as a replacement for the more conventional 40CC, although since the latter has been phased out, there appears to have been more demand for it than ever.

So at present both models will stay to fight it out.

Beneteau are planning to build 80 42s a year and have gone out of their way to add the innovative counter stern and bathing platform in a bid to create a product for a niche market.

They say time will tell which of the two models proves more popular, and this will decide which stays in the line-up.

The Beneteau Oceanis 42CC is a very competent yacht which will suit many cruising families.

She offers safety with her centre cockpit and deck details, like the small bulwarks which make it safer to walk around the deck, and practicality with the extra locker space provided by the counter stern design.

Opting for the wheel at the aft end of the cockpit would make sense, although it is not possible to change the steering system from hydraulic – while you should not encounter any problems with this system, it is worth bearing in mind our experience with the test yacht, and make sure you take yours for a sail first.

Beneteau Swift Trawler 42

  • By Chuck Husick
  • Updated: October 4, 2007

Beneteau , the largest producer of recreational vessels in France and owner of a major boatbuilding plant in Marion, South Carolina, recently rolled out the Swift Trawler 42, its first trawler yacht-and the company’s first powerboat to reach the U.S. market. Beneteau is already well known on these shores for its wide and highly regarded range of sailboats, so it should come as no surprise that Beneteau’s entry into the U.S. power market is a strong one.

The Swift Trawler 42 makes a very positive impression. I particularly appreciated the ease of movement about the decks, possibly a carry-over from Beneteau’s extensive sailboat design experience. The interior space is very well used and avoids the negative impact of squeezing too much into a space. At anchor, she will be a very livable boat for a couple and occasional guests.

The Beneteau 42 can cruise all day at better then 20 knots without abusing her engines, structure or systems. The waterline beam, just under 14 feet, accounts in part for the ease with which the boat achieves her cruising speeds-it is somewhat smaller than what has become common of boats of this type. Whatever penalty the slightly narrow beam might have exacted on interior space and stowage is offset by Beneteau’s experience building sailboats, where every cubic inch is put to use.

The secret of this fast trawler lies in the builder’s combination of careful hull design, weight control and choice of efficient power plants. She is powered by twin 370 hp Yanmar six-cylinder turbo diesels and reaches a top speed in excess of 25 knots. Her hull has a sharp entry and maximum deadrise of 16 degrees, tapering to 12 at the transom. The yacht’s draft, only 3 feet, 5 inches, combines with props that are partly recessed into shallow hull tunnels, allowing practical access to thin waters.

High hull sides, combined with the upper-deck overhang, provide excellent protection for the side decks. The house is typical of modern trawler-yacht design, with large glass windscreens forward and fixed ports on the sides. The highly efficient aft cockpit has wing doors that close off the side decks. There are two hull bulwark doors: one on the transom for access to the swim platform, the other adjacent to the lower helm station’s sliding door. A welded stainless-steel rail surrounds the foredeck, with a sailboat-like lower security wire in the aft sections.

Beneteau designed the 42 with two staterooms forward, down a few steps from the saloon; access is via a small lobby at the foot of the steps. The master is far forward, and the guest is to starboard. The builder has taken pains to provide a high degree of sound isolation between the spaces.

The head/shower compartment on hull number two (the first available in the U.S.) was set up as two spaces. An MSD-equipped compartment is forward and entered through a door from the master, while a separate shower compartment is aft, entered from the lobby. A sliding door can separate the two areas. The builder has indicated an alternate layout will permanently separate the two compartments; each will have an MSD and a shower. The basic arrangement seems sensible for a boat usually occupied by a couple and occasional guests.

The lower helm station is to starboard. The engines are managed with single-lever controls. The trim tab and bowthruster controls are within easy reach. A comprehensive annunciator panel and full analog (round dial) instrumentation are provided for each engine. The upper part of the instrument panel provides adequate space for the usual array of electronics. The steering compass is properly placed, and I was pleased to note a placard on the door to the adjacent stowage locker warning that magnetic materials should not be placed there.

Opposite the helm is the galley. Here, the sink is forward of the sliding door to the side deck, and the stove and oven are just abaft the door. The refrigerator is hidden from view within nicely finished cabinetry.

Abaft the galley is the saloon. A long settee occupies the port side, and the dining table on our test boat was easy to move yet remained in place during high-speed runs and sharp, full-speed maneuvers. Access to the engine compartment is through a hinged, gas-spring-supported hatch on centerline at the after end of the saloon, just ahead of the sliding doors that provide access to the cockpit.

The cockpit is a delightful space. Four lockable hatches provide access to extensive stowage and to the 11kW Onan diesel genset. Wing doors close off the side decks to create a space that will be comfortable in almost all conditions, including when the 42 is cruising at immodest speeds. Side curtains are optional-they’re sure to be popular.

Construction includes the use of a cored hull with a bonded, load-bearing internal stringer system. The deck and superstructure are cored with balsa to provide a stiff, lightweight and sufficiently insulated structure. An internal molded-fiberglass liner contributes to strength and the trawler’s clean appearance.

Maximum displacement is 33,000 pounds, and fuel and fresh-water capacity are 395 and 169 gallons, respectively. Each of the two Yanmar 6LYA-STP six-cylinder turbocharged diesels delivers a maximum of 370 hp at 3300 rpm. The light weight of the engines-3.04 pounds per horsepower without marine gear-accounts for a significant part of the boat’s high-speed performance.

Though the company had not yet performed the final propeller tuning, we obtained a wide-open-throttle speed of 25.4 knots. Yanmar’s rating for these engines allows continuous operation at 3100 rpm-the maximum minus 200 rpm. Running the engines at this speed produced a reading of just over 23 knots on the GPS. More conservative skippers may choose to run their engines a bit slower-say, at 2900 rpm (a maximum sustained cruise-speed rating common to many engine manufacturers). At this rpm the engines were delivering only 75 percent of their rated power, yet the boat was cruising at 20.6 knots. The 42 is indeed a swift trawler.

At this power setting, we ran the boat into a 2-foot chop and 12 to 15 knots of wind on Tampa Bay and found the ride to be completely comfortable. The boat was stable and responded immediately to helm commands, including maximum-effort turns. Except in the turns off the wind, there was a notable lack of spray on the windscreens.

The ship’s electrical panel is aft on the port side and commendably small- unlike those that would be more appropriate at a major power-generating station. The skipper can conduct routine engine inspection without removing the saloon deck, but if needed, the sections can be removed for unobstructed access to all machinery. One small item in the engine compartment really delighted us: The sharp ends of the band-type hose clamps had slip-on plastic covers.

The primary fuel filters and seawater strainers for the engines are mounted on the after side of the fuel tanks, at the forward end of the engine compartment. At present, access to these critical service points requires passing between the engines. Though ventilation here is outstanding moving past all that hot iron is, at best, an unattractive idea.

The Beneteau Swift Trawler 42 balances the comfort of a sailboat interior, the efficiency of a slow-paced trawler and the quickness of a modern motoryacht. Anyone will find this well-done package tempting-even owners of the builder’s entries in the world of wind.

Operating margin now expected to reach 4% to 6% for 2024 - Premiumization and adaptation measures continuing to move forward

beneteau catamaran 42

  • Group operating margin over 10% for H1 2024
  • First-half ordinary operating margin close to 9% for the Boat division, despite a 32% contraction in sales linked primarily to the expected decrease in dealer stock levels
  • Solid financial structure, with positive net cash of €137m after dividend payments, profit-sharing and company performance bonuses
  • Outlook confirmed for 2024 revenues, with around €1bn expected for the Boat division, and revised for operating margin between 4% and 6% (vs. 3% to 6% previously)
  • Ramping up the development of the Group’s three strategic pillars: value-driven growth, sustainable innovation and new navigation solutions
“Groupe Beneteau’s results for the first half of 2024 once again illustrate the relevance of the value-driven growth strategy rolled out over the last few years. They also highlight the outstanding adaptability of its 8,000 staff, who are once again showing their agility as they move forward faced with the major changes on the markets, particularly for the smaller units in the United States. The second half of 2024 will be marked, as expected, by the continued reduction in dealer stock levels and a return to seasonality for shipments. As always, the Group will generate new sources of growth by launching innovative models. The very good response to the new models presented at the first autumn shows is encouraging and starting to translate into orders” ,

confirms Bruno Thivoyon, Groupe Beneteau Chief Executive Officer.

Boat division profitability close to 9% thanks to the adaptation measures rolled out

The Boat division recorded first-half revenues of €557m (€813m in H1 2023). As expected, this 32% drop is linked primarily to the changes in inventory within the distribution networks. After building their stock back up again post-Covid for nearly €150m in H1 2023, the increase in financing rates, in line with expectations, led dealers to reduce their inventory by around €80m over the first half of this year. Excluding this phenomenon, sales to end customers show a contraction of around 4% for the period. As detailed in the publication on July 24, this change is due to the lower volumes seen on certain market segments such as small power units in the United States and Monohull Sailing. This trend was largely offset by a targeted premiumization strategy covering the other segments, such as multihulls.

The Boat division’s income from ordinary operations totaled €49.5m for the first half of 2024 (€131.2m in H1 2023). This contraction is linked to the changes in dealer stock levels (-€75m), the slowdown in market volumes (-€20m), and foreign exchange effects (-€5m), although mitigated by the premiumization strategy (+€15m) and competitiveness gains (+€16m). In addition, the adaptation measures launched by the Group to maintain its operational efficiency, while preserving its ability to bounce back (multi-year working time arrangements and furlough measures) represent a residual cost of €11m for the first half of this year. The Boat division’s ordinary operating margin came to 8.9% for the first half of 2024, with over 11% excluding the American brands, affected in particular by the very sharp slowdown in demand for small power units in the United States.

Housing division’s good performance in a market that is normalizing

Following three years of very strong growth, Housing division revenues stabilized at nearly €210m for the first half of 2024 (€215m in 2023). The slowdown in demand on the French market was offset by the sales growth achieved for exports (+24%). The division once again achieved an outstanding performance over the first half of the year, with €30.5m of income from ordinary operations and an operating margin of 14.5%.

The Housing activity’s proposed sale to Trigano is still subject to approval by the French competition authorities, with their response expected during the second half of 2024. In accordance with IFRS 5, this business is presented in the Group’s consolidated accounts under “Operations held for sale”.

Solid financial structure with €137m of net cash (before IFRS 5)

Net income (Group share) came to €49.4m for the first half of the year (€117.1m in H1 2023), with this decrease in line with the lower level of activity for the Boat division. The negative figure of -€0.8m for financial income and expenses reflects an improvement in placement conditions (+€2m vs. 2023), while no longer benefiting from positive impacts linked to the change in exchange rates on currency hedging (-€2.4m in 2024 vs. +€1.8m in H1 2023).

For the first half of 2024, the share of associates represents a -€4.2m expense (-€0.9m in H1 2023). This deterioration primarily reflects the non-recurring impact for the depreciation of the securities of the weekly charter company Navigare (-€2.5m) with its full takeover by the holding company Bluesea, jointly owned with the investment group PPF, which controls it. Moreover, the impact of the reduced level of boat sales for the other charter company Dream Yacht Charter was offset through growth in the financing activities of the subsidiary SGB.

The Group had €136.6m of net cash at June 30, 2024 (with €21m relating to the Housing division). The changes over the first half of the year are linked mainly to the dividends paid out (€59m), as well as the payment of profit-sharing and company performance bonuses, end-of-year rebates and tax, with a €76m change in working capital requirements relating to elements resulting from the outstanding performance from 2023. Other working capital requirements items increased by €12m, primarily due to the reduction in trade payables in line with the lower level of activity, while the level of inventory remained stable over the period and came in €23m below end-June 2023. Lastly, the Boat division’s net investments came to €43m for the first half of the year (€32m in H1 2023). They include the acquisition of a minority interest in the startup Candela (€4m) and the finalization of work to increase the flexibility of the French sites (€8m). The Housing division generated €7m of cash during the first half of 2024 (-€3m in H1 2023).

The Group had €845m of shareholders’ equity at June 30, 2024 (€795m at June 30, 2023).

Outlook confirmed for 2024 despite the market uncertainty and strategic plan continuing to move forward

At the start of this boat season, as the market is still marked by a wait-and-see approach, dealers are continuing to roll out their stock reduction plans, with €100m to €150m still expected for the full year in 2024. In addition, interest rates remain high, which is expected to continue affecting end customer demand for small power units and monohull sailing models, as well as the ability of charter firms to renew their fleets.

For its part, the high-end market continues to be dynamic and the new models presented at the first autumn shows have received very positive feedback, confirming the relevance of the premiumization strategy rolled out across the various segments.  The Group is therefore continuing to move forward with its strategic roadmap, focused on three priorities for the 2024-2025 season:

Adapting its cost structure, while continuing to adjust its industrial capacity and scaling back its indirect costs. Full-year savings of €25m are expected, while €10m were achieved in H1 2024.

Accelerating its value-driven growth strategy with the launch of 14 new models over the season. The new PRESTIGE M-Line power multihull range will be further strengthened with the M7, positioned between the current PRESTIGE M48 and M8. Alongside this, five new sailing catamarans will be launched over one year by the LAGOON and EXCESS brands, offering a range from under 40 feet to over 80 feet. Lastly, sales on the Dayboating segment will be boosted by the introduction of a new offer from the WELLCRAFT brand, whose first model, the 38 T-Top, received a very good response when it was presented at Cannes, as well as the continued development of the FOUR WINNS brand’s outboard catamaran range.

Innovating to reduce the Group’s CO2 emission intensity by 30% by 2030, while continuing to improve its user experience.

The new BENETEAU Swift Trawler 54, fitted with electric stabilizing fins, and the twin-hull foil-assisted FOUR WINNS models both combine a 20% to 40% reduction in their CO2 emission intensity with a very significant improvement in conditions for stability on the water. For its part, the Island Cruising concept boat shows how combining hybrid propulsion fitted as standard with an innovative hull architecture can reduce in-use CO2 emission intensity by nearly 50%, while significantly increasing its on-board comfort levels and living space.

Lastly, at Cannes, the Group unveiled its first Refit project, with the Lagoon 620 NEO, renovating catamarans over 60 feet at its Monfalcone industrial site. This offer will enable their owners to benefit from the whole range of new technologies available, as well as a new manufacturer’s warranty.

In this market environment, shipments are expected to return to their pre-Covid seasonality levels. The Group is therefore able to confirm its latest full-year revenue forecast for 2024, with around €1bn for the Boat division, and is now targeting an ordinary operating margin of 4% to 6% (3% to 6% previously), with 6% to 8% excluding the American brands, which are expected to see an operating loss of nearly €15m for the year. The Boat division is also forecasting a reduction in internal inventory levels by €20m to €50m for the year.

Beneteau Oceanis 42 CC

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

"Customers love the aft helm position for the sensations, it's different from other catamarans! "

"In Tahiti, there are children who have never seen the sea, and we'd like to take them sailing. It's part of one of our projects with the Excess 11".

Cathy and John B - Excess Campus

"You learn lots of things. And then meeting and sharing with the other owners... So far, it's been great!"

Cathy and John B - Excess Campus - EXCESS 14

Hiroshi H

"What I’m going to say seems to be kind of ridiculous because I’ve just got a brand new Excess 15, but in my mind I have already started thinking about my next dream boat. In six years from now, when I become a seventy year old man – if I’m alive still – Excess 17, with the Torqeedo solution."

Hiroshi H - EXCESS 15

Ned and Misala

"I like this boat because it's fun, it's fast and it also allows you to cruise, so it's a good mix between cruising and fast sailing."

Ned and Misala - EXCESS 11

Jeff B

"I found that sailing was both relaxing and stimulating, as well as a good escape from the stress of my profession. »

Jeff B - EXCESS 11

Tony & Heather

“When the Excess 14 first came out, it seemed almost perfect. The main advantages of this catamaran are its perfect size for two people, and its ease of sailing. With the boom being low, it’s easy to handle.”

Tony & Heather - EXCESS 14

Jeniffer and Cédric

“We loved the family atmosphere. Excess is like one great big family to us, and we're really glad to be part of it! They're always there to listen to us and advise us.”

Jeniffer and Cédric - EXCESS 14

Giovanni C

“I love both the profile and the “hybrid” concept, halfway between a traditional monohull and a very cruisey catamaran such as a Lagoon. It's comfortable and easy to sail, with no more water on deck... And ladies prefer a boat that doesn’t heel!”

Giovanni C - EXCESS 11

André G

“I've been seduced by the performance of the Excess range, and that’s really why I've just bought an Excess 14, which for me is the ideal compromise. For me, with my sailing experience, it’s interior space and habitability, it meets all my expectations!”

André G - EXCESS 11

Marco and Lizzy

“We spent exactly 365 days onboard of our Excess 11 in both the Mediterranean and the Caribbean and loved the combination of comfort and sailing performance. We never imagined that taking showers or cooking while crossing an ocean would be so much fun!”

Marco and Lizzy - EXCESS 11

Marion and Arthur

“In our opinion, this is the perfect compromise between comfort under way and at anchor, and great sailing sensations with performance that frequently impresses us! It sails very well upwind as well as in light airs. From 7 knots of apparent wind, we move faster under sail than under motor. We don't regret our choice one bit, and enjoy every day spent on board our Silène.”

Marion and Arthur - EXCESS 11

Franck D

" - About the Excess Factory Tour - A thousand thank-yous for a wonderful day on Saturday. We really enjoyed taking part. The tour of the premises, with perfect commentary, was very interesting and informative. Thank you also for allowing me to see a preview of my own boat. "

Tim G

“Yes, we were very impressed with the Excess 14. Each year, we teach hundreds of students how to sail on all the latest catamarans in production, from Fountaine Pajot, to Bali, Nautitech, etc..."

Tim G - EXCESS 14

J. Yu

"The boat was really light and fast, the mainsail is laregerand easier to operate. The sails can be hoisted and lowered very quicly... The self-tacking of the foresail, ma,ny catamarans don't have this. This one is especially good for leisure sailing, family outing, for the begginers starters... First of all, it's covenient. That's impportant, it's easy to maneuver, it's easy to get started."

LENGTH: Traditionally, LOA (length over all) equaled hull length. Today, many builders use LOA to include rail overhangs, bowsprits, etc. and LOD (length on deck) for hull length.
