How Engine Problems Nearly Sunk an Entire Season of Bravo’s ‘Below Deck: Sailing Yacht’

“We thought the season was over. It was obviously just catastrophic,” recalls chief engineer Colin Macrae

Reality television crews are prepared for the unexpected: two cast members may spontaneously begin fighting each other, a contestant may become injured, etc. But when the Parsifal III, the ship that serves as the setting for Bravo’s popular “Below Deck: Sailing Yacht,” suffered engine failure 24 hours before the season’s first charter, the cast and crew had to scramble to find a solution.

The drama played out in the first three episodes of Season 4, which are now streaming on Peacock. But there wouldn’t have been a season at all if it weren’t for the quick thinking and expertise of chief engineer Colin Macrae.

TheWrap recently caught up with Macrae, Captain Glenn Shephard and executive producer Courtland Cox to discuss the near-disaster.

Walk us through the timeline of what happened. The issue was only discovered less than 24 hours before the first charter?

Macrae: We don’t get a lot of time to prepare the yacht for charter, we kind of come in, do our thing and then head off on our merry way. The initial issue that I thought we were dealing with was a starter motor issue, so I thought it was electrical. It’s all sort of revealed in the episodes but it was something much more serious. The engine itself was basically locked up. There was no way to run that engine.

Shephard: The boat had just crossed the Atlantic and had a lot of work done on the engine. Turns out one of the things that was done to the engine turned out to be the cause of the problem. When they cleaned that part that leaked water into the engine — we call it the aftercooler — they were using seawater. They inadvertently, possibly opened up a pinhole that had been protected or kept closed by some dirt.

The seawater locked up the engine?

Shephard: It was a mechanical blockage, which is due to what we call a water lock, or hydro lock. There’s water in the cylinders, and in the pistons just can’t go up and down.

Once we figure that out and we understand the problem with the assistance of the local mechanics, we’re like, “OK, what can we do? How can we fix it in a normal situation like this?” And you see it in Episode 1. Even if all the parts are available, you’re talking a minimum of two weeks to rebuild it. And that’s an absolute minimum, that’s what these guys are quoting. So yeah, it’s pretty dire. It’s not a fun conversation.

So you’re not only looking at losing the first charter, but possibly the entire season of the show?

Macrae: It was absolutely devastating. And the nature of the disaster was that we thought that the season was over. It was obviously just catastrophic. And I had to put 15-16 years of experience as an engineer to use, to try and get us out of that, or the season was literally over.

When did production realize something was really wrong?

Cox: We had a camera following Colin and Glenn in the engine room, but it’s very loud in there so it’s hard to hear actually what’s happening. After they come out and have a conversation in the wheelhouse where Colin lays it out to Glenn, that’s when I think, “Oh God, I gotta go talk to Glenn and find out what’s really happening here.”

And so, it’s within 15 minutes that I worriedly run up and I’m saying, “Is it a starter issue? It’s not a starter issue. What are the other problems that we’re facing and how is this gonna affect us?” Glenn is so Canadian; he’s such an optimist and I trust Glenn. And Colin is an amazing engineer.

So Glenn’s calmly like, “I think we’ll be able to figure it out. Colin is on it.” And so I’m thinking, “Okay great. In the back of my head and my producer brain, I’m thinking that’s all well and good. But if not, then what happens? I’m confident, as Glenn is on that first night, that something can be fixed and then as it goes later and later and later into the night. And we’re not seeing that, that all of the initial things that Colin thought it was are actually coming to fruition. That’s when I start to get a little panicked. And, you know, I start running through all of the bad scenarios in my brain.

below deck sailing yacht engine

So the bad scenario did happen and the ship wasn’t able to leave dock after the charter guests arrived. How was having that conversation?

Shephard: It’s a lot of dread. We’re so used to having guests come on and going out having a great holiday, we know how much they expect that. And a big part of that holiday, especially on a sailing super yacht is to get off the dock and go sailing. And so it was not fun at all to have to deliver that news. Obviously, as the captain — and this goes for any one of the crew — we feel responsible because that’s our whole point to be there is to make sure guests come on board and have a great holiday. And if we don’t have the tools, or something goes wrong with the tools to be able to let allow us to do that, we all feel bad.

I especially feel bad because the buck stops with me. And I’m the one who has to give them the bad news and try to give it to them in the nicest way possible.

Being stuck at the dock must complicate production, too.

Cox: It’s interesting for me as a producer to say, “All right, well, we’re not going to leave the dock likely tomorrow.” How is Glenn going to present that to the guests? And how are the guests going to react? And what is that going to mean as a domino effect for the yacht crew? And in my experience — I’ve done every season of the show since day one — when the boat is stuck at the dock for weather or whatever, it is a nightmare for the yacht crew. Because all of a sudden, the guests aren’t distracted by water toys and beautiful backdrops. They want service 24/7. There’s gonna be a ripple effect and the crew are gonna hate it, the chef’s gonna hate it, and [chief stewardess] Daisy is gonna hate it. The deck crew love it because the deck crew have less to do.

So you planned a beach day off the yacht for the guests, another complication. But you still need to follow what’s happening with the engine and everything else on the boat.

Cox: I have at max three camera crews on the boat, usually two, sometimes three. And sometimes there are four or five places that need to be covered as important story. And it’s just sort of figuring that out and allocating that. And so you know, every problem that the boat faces becomes a problem for us as well. And I joke always, when it’s conflict when it’s complicated for us as producers, it’s good television. Yeah. If it’s easy for us, then it’s boring.

below deck sailing yacht engine

Fortunately, Colin was able to come up with an ingenious solution but sadly, that whole first charter was lost.

Shephard: We basically took that part off and we didn’t have any aftercooling. That impacted the running temperature of the engine, so we had to run a little bit slower than we normally would maybe — maybe 15%. So we’re still able to go out and do everything, but we still have to be very careful in doing it that way because we were at 85% capacity. It was pretty creative and clever to come up with that solution because a lot of people would say you’ve got to rebuild. And that’s gonna take you a month or two, and there’s your season gone. So I’m really happy that Colin had that idea. And I’m glad that it was something that we could implement, and that it worked out as well as it did.

Now that you’ve survived this near-disaster, how does it affect your approach for future seasons of “Below Deck: Sailing Yacht”?

Shephard: I just got off Parsifal about three weeks ago in Spain. And we’ve just done a complete major rebuild of that engine. Every part that could come off that engine was taken off, and a new part was replaced. So it’s basically a new engine. We’re doing the same thing on our generators, we’re upgrading a lot of systems. And you always do that. But you know, if you talk to any super yacht owner, you’ll find out that a brand new boat, especially because a lot of these are semi-custom, but a brand new boat can have problems. So it’s not just it’s not like it was due to neglect or anything like that.

Cox: It’s very important to us that we have a dialogue with the owner of the yacht; Glenn works for that owner. So he’s kind of our conduit. I literally said to Glenn, “Before this [next] season, I want to see a video of that engine rebuild happening in Denia, Spain, where it was happening. I want to see it with my own eyes.”

And he laughed, and he said, “I get it.” And so that’s new. Before, you sort of trust when you charter a yacht, you’re just sort of running on faith that it’s going to work. And so that has changed. But listen, there are so many things that can go wrong on a yacht. This show is always like, just on a precipice of disaster. And it’s part of why it makes it great because the stakes are so real all the time.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 plot

Bravo offered this synopsis of Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 and it gives you a good sense of what's coming in the new season:

"Capt. Glenn and his comeback team Daisy Kelliher, Gary King and Colin MacRae resume their responsibilities aboard Parsifal III, along with new, dynamic crew members, as they set sail in Sardinia, Italy. Capt. Glenn realizes that his laid-back leadership style has allowed his crew to become too comfortable and starts taking charge of quality control in the interior department, much to Daisy's dismay.

"In the galley, Chef Ileisha’s cooking impresses the guests, but her indecisiveness and co-dependency lead to time-management issues between courses, which causes her to self-destruct. On deck, strong personalities collide, and a power struggle results in a near mutiny, as Gary clashes with his new overconfident deckhand, Chase.

"Two overlapping love triangles further complicate the dynamics on-board, and a shocking hookup puts Colin, Daisy and Gary’s friendship in jeopardy. With a near collision, fire, crew rebellion, gruesome guest injury and two different potentially season-ending engine failures, this is the most captivating and unpredictable season yet of Below Deck Sailing Yacht ."

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 cast: Meet Captain Glenn’s new and returning crew members

Captain Glenn on Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5

Captain Glenn Shephard will be back on the small screen soon for Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5.

After a delay and a slew of fan speculation, Season 5 of Below Deck Sailing Yacht finally received a premiere date and a trailer.

However, in true Below Deck fashion, a couple of alums make up Captain Glenn’s latest crew, but a fan favorite is missing.

Colin MacRae isn’t returning as Chief Engineer after a turbulent Season 4 that fractured his friendships with Gary King and Daisy Kellier.

The three helped revamp the sailing show after a lackluster Season 1, making it a hit along with Captain Glenn. Colin will undoubtedly be missed.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht stars Daisy Kelliher and Gary King are back

Two people needing no introduction are Gary and Daisy, who are each back for their fourth season on Below Deck Sailing Yacht.

Last summer, photos of Gary and Daisy filming Season 5 were leaked; honestly, we weren’t surprised to see them in the mix. Despite their friction, which amps up for Season 5, Daisy and Gary make good television.

Gary was featured much less in the trailer than in previous seasons, and that likely has to do with the sexual misconduct allegations that came out after Season 5 was filmed. Recently, Gary shared an update about his accuser as he continues to proclaim his innocence.

All it takes is one rotten apple to taint the reputation of a beloved series . That’s the exact effect of Gary King ’s behavior on Below Deck Sailing Yacht . Bravo recently announced that Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 will reunite Captain Glenn Shephard , Chief Stew Daisy Kelliher , and King as they spend their charter season in Ibiza. The new installment, which comes after almost a year since the wrap of Season 4, has sparked controversy owing to the inclusion of King, who has been accused of sexual misconduct . A production member accused King of forcing himself on her while he was in an inebriated state during the filming of Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 4 in Sardinia, Italy.

While King has vehemently denied the allegations, considering his playboy ways since his debut on Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 2, viewers are leaning toward believing he is guilty. Given his reputation on deck, he often gets tangled in boatmances and love triangles , making viewers and those involved increasingly uncomfortable. His time on Parsifal III has nearly always led him into hookups with his fellow crew mates. Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 filming has been wrapped for over a year and was allegedly delayed due to the strong allegations against King . Given the gravity of the situation and the safety of women on board, the question arises: Why is Gary King being allowed to run wild as a part of the upcoming season?

Gary King’s Behavior Was Problematic From the Get-Go

Gary King joined the Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 2 cast in March 2021 as First Mate on Parsifal III and was later promoted to First Officer by Captain Shephard. King had 12 years of experience as a first mate and a captain on smaller boats, making him exceptionally good at his job. However, his sexual and romantic endeavors often led him into messy conundrums. From the get-go, King has been embroiled in boatmances and hooked up with fellow crew members, earning him the title of the resident f-boy on deck . Right from his debut season, King wasted no time hooking up with his deckhand, Sydney Zaruba , by the end of the second episode. However, eventually, King realized he was more interested in Third Stew Alli Dore , which resulted in his first love triangle on the show . Things got extra messy, and Dore broke things off with him shortly after the season wrapped. Interestingly, it must also be noted that Gary King had a long-distance girlfriend while pursuing both women on deck .

Season 3 saw King quickly move onto a new love triangle with Junior Stews Ashley Marti and Scarlett Bentley , before which he was also briefly pursuing Gabriela Barragan , who left early. Although it was evident that Marti was way more into King than he was, he continued his incessant, cringeworthy advances toward Bentley. In Season 4, things took a wild turn, with the prominent tensions between Daisy Kelliher and Gary King taking center stage . King was at a disadvantage that season as he arrived a few days later when Kelliher already had a thing going on with Chief Engineer Colin MacRae . King disregarded what the duo had going on and pursued Kelliher most uncomfortably, landing him in a third love triangle. When Daisy refused to give in to his advances, he immediately engaged in a situationship with Mads Herrera . He later accused Herrera of playing with his feelings despite her stating they were always casual.

'Below Deck Sailing Yacht' Crew Members Have Accused King of Sexual Assault

On August 24, 2023, Rolling Stone released an exposé where a production member of the show accused Gary King of sexual assault. Samantha Suarez , who first joined the makeup department on Below Deck Season 10, revealed in the article that King forced himself on her while filming Season 4 in Sardinia, Italy , in the summer of 2022. During that period, crew members stayed in the same hotel, and before filming charters on the yacht and on the few “dark days,” so did Below Deck cast members . Suarez, who did hair and makeup for the cast, was also responsible for carrying out everyday tasks like ensuring that the cast members were safely placed in their hotel rooms, bringing them food and water, and so on. She noted that King was being difficult from the get-go and not adhering to COVID protocols when they first arrived in Sardinia.

‘Below Deck’ Star Sinks Wedding Following Shock Split

"I think that this is the best decision for both of us."

While recounting the incident, Suarez revealed how she was given the responsibility of accompanying King back to his hotel room while he was visibly intoxicated after he filmed his interviews for the show. After much difficulty, she got King safely into his hotel room when he repeatedly asked her not to leave. Right when she was about to leave, King came up behind her, grabbing and pressing his body against Suarez , refusing to let her go. She managed to get him off after kicking and elbowing him, and by a stroke of luck, she received a call from a talent manager at that very moment. It should also be noted that King was just wearing his underwear at the time . Suarez immediately informed producers, and King was instructed to sleep on the boat for the remainder of the “dark days.”

Gary King’s Reputation Didn’t Help Matters Despite His Denial

Gary King’s behavior toward women has been problematic for years, which makes his denial of Suarez’s claims hard to believe. Be it the nature of his complicated relationship with Daisy Kelliher or his unhinged flirting with Stews Lucy Edmunds and Herrera, which made them visibly uncomfortable. King even made a snide and painfully uncomfortable comment on his sexual endeavors with Herrera related to her period, which was addressed on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen . The Rolling Stone article also revealed that several anonymous crew members came forward to recount incidents where King was being predatory and disrespectful, terming him “ next-level scary with women.” They also revealed other instances, such as when King had grabbed a female cast member’s butt despite her asking him to stop and where he grabbed a production crew member’s genitals.

According to US Weekly , King broke his silence on the incident in the comments section of one of his Instagram posts on the same day as the Rolling Stone story . In since-deleted replies to comments where viewers questioned the allegations, King stated that Suarez’s claims were far from the truth and accused her of making him an unlucky target while she sought a platform. He further expressed how she lied and threw shade at the anonymous accusers. King also doubled down on his denial by accusing Suarez and her boyfriend of targeting him as a revenge ploy for not being invited back on Below Deck over problems they had caused. In the same comment, King also addressed how the allegations have affected his career and his family , describing it as the most challenging period.

The Allegations Against King Should've Been Handled Better

Post the incident, both Bravo and 51 Minds Entertainment released statements to Rolling Stone which reiterated how they are committed to providing a safe working environment for the cast and crew with an update on the incident, “the concerns Ms. Suarez raised in July 2022 were investigated at that time and action was taken based on the findings.” King was also removed from his panel at BravoCon 2023, but he continued filming. However, the revelations made in the exposé insinuated how production often lets such issues slide, and crew members who were vocal about witnessing the harassment were not asked to return for the following season . It cannot be ignored that, despite Gary King’s denial, his behavior across seasons — even before the incident — was quite problematic.

Bravo’s sweeping of the matter under the rug didn’t do anyone any favors as, ideally, they should’ve resorted to an immediate termination like in the case of Below Deck Down Under where Captain Jason Chambers booted Luke Jones and Laura Bileskalne for sexual misconduct . Captain Shephard should’ve overlooked his longstanding camaraderie with King and resorted to taking strict action against him, keeping in mind the women on deck. While it can be understandable to some extent that King had to be a part of Season 5, as it was filmed in advance, it would be disappointing to see him return if the show gets renewed for another season. It would further stain the already tarnished reputation of the reality TV show and cause them to lose respect in the eyes of their fans. While it remains to be seen whether scenes featuring Gary King have been kept minimal or edited out, there’s no doubt that his actions have left a permanent smudge on Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 premieres on October 7 at 9 p.m. ET on Bravo in the U.S. The episode will be available to stream the next day on Peacock.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 4 Episode 7 Recap: Where There’s Smoke

When last we left Below Deck Sailing Yacht , Chief Stew Daisy Kelliher had recovered from her teary meltdown. But Chief Engineer Colin MacRae and First Mate Gary King were still having a lovers’ spat. As Deckhand Chase Lemacks said, “What’s up with all of our heads of departments? They’re all imploding.”

Tonight’s crew dinner should be interesting. They’re either all going to kiss (literally) and make up, or there will be a fireworks display in Portisco, Sardinia tonight.

While Colin headed down to his cabin for a nap, Daisy caught up with Gary on deck. She was still steamed at the chief engineer for throwing shade at her (disguised as “constructive criticism”) in the crew meeting.

“That charter was so hard,” she complained to Gary. “It was non-stop. When I tried to stand up for myself, Colin completely [turned] it back around. Don’t make me into a f***ing clown in front of everybody. I know that that was directed at me. F***ing p****.”

“I have never been this angry with Colin before,” Daisy interviewed. “He … loves to come in and be the voice of reason. But it’s none of his f***ing business. Colin needs to shut the f*** up and know his f***ing place.” I’m thinking all that righteous anger will soon convert itself to sexual energy later in the evening. It’s gotta happen soon . We’re into Episode 7 already!

Everyone just needs to have some fun

below deck sailing yacht engine

Everyone’s nerves were on edge following such a hard charter, and they all looked forward to blowing off some steam. As the girls were getting ready for a night out, Gary woke Colin from his nap to apologize for their spat.

“Sorry, bru,” he said. “I don’t know how that got so deep.” After they both said sorry, Gary told Colin to “come on outside. [Let me] get you a beer.” And they immediately began speculating who they wanted to make out with later in the evening. Only time will tell!

As Captain Glenn Shephard tendered the crew over to the restaurant for dinner, Gary passed around beers. “Where’s my beer?” Glenn joked. Of course, he couldn’t imbibe, since he was driving the tender.

Their dinner table was set on an outdoor patio overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea (I Googled it). Absolutely gorgeous! As their waiters Jacopo and Allesio were laying out utensils and napkins, Chase clapped his hands together like a little girl, “Ooh, it’s so fancy! … All right ladies, take notes on what these guys are doing, huh?” Chase is so socially awkward.

“F*** off, Chase,” Junior Stew Lucy Edmunds moaned. She later interviewed, “The last thing I needed after Daisy’s cried and Glenn’s given us bad feedback is Chase to make his sh** jokes about my f***ing job.” Not cool Chase.

When the appetizers came around, Chase looked at his plate and blurted, “What’s this? Chicken nuggets and some watermelon, huh?” Where did this yokel come from? Has he never eaten in a nice restaurant before? Have some couth, dude. You’re not making any points with your co-workers. Someone says it’s “anemone” and it’s amazing!

Lucy suddenly remembered she hadn’t put up the plastic shield to keep her from drunkenly rolling out of her top bunk. She joked that Colin should put it on his job list.

“As long as you do something ,” Daisy jabbed. Still mad, I see.

“Daisy wants to have a fight tonight,” Colin answered.

“Somebody’s in the firing line,” Daisy shot back. “Might as well be you.”

Even though he laughed, Colin was a little worried about fighting with the chief stew. “I don’t want to fight with anyone on board,” he told a production interview, “let alone Daisy. She’s a good friend, but I’m not going to be made to feel bad about giving my opinion. She can be mad at me all night if she wants. It’s just a waste of her energy.” Like I said earlier, “energy.” Wink, wink.

Alex is crushing on Mads but is scared of Gary

below deck sailing yacht engine

Across the table, Junior Stew Madison “Mads” Herrera and Deckhand Alex Propson looked cozy, taking selfies and whispering to each other. Gary was not stanning. “To friends, to family,” Mads toasted Alex. “And to me and you,” as they linked arms and sipped their wine. Poor Gary. There went his big plans for the evening.

“[I] just didn’t realize I was a jealous person until tonight,” he told Chef Ileisha Dell , sitting next to him.

“Oh, you’re jealous?” she asked him. “What are you going to do, though?” Not much he can do. But then again, recognizing his boss’ envy, Alex realized that hooking up with Mads could get messy.

Walking back to the van after dinner, Gary chastised Mads. “Don’t kiss me one night and then flirt with someone else,” he scolded. Good job, Gary. All that little outburst accomplished was to piss her off. He may have intimidated Alex, but Mads doesn’t work for Gary.

On the way back to the boat, the boys roughhoused in their van, while the girls were playing “F***, Marry, Kill” in theirs. Mads said she would “F*** Alex, marry Colin, kill Chase.” She called it correctly. I agree.

Daisy chose, “F*** Alex, marry Gary and kill Colin, ’cause I’m [still] super f***ing mad at him.” Can’t argue with that reasoning either.

Back on the boat, Chase tried to promote a game of Twister. What is this? Are they in high school? Gary finally moved in for a kiss with Mads, as Alex was either too drunk or just too scared of his boss. Even though Mads was hoping to get with Alex, in the end, she settled for Gary since she was horny and he was the one making the moves.

Colin and Daisy: friends again

below deck sailing yacht engine

The next morning, it was back to work, even though everyone was pretty hungover. Daisy and Colin passed each other in the corridor without speaking. “What the f***’s going on with Daisy?” he asked Gary.

“She says she’s pretty pissed off with you,” Gary answered.

Colin was missing the point. He just didn’t understand why Daisy was so angry with him. I do. She was tired and frustrated, and you didn’t have her back, bro. That’s why.

When Captain Glenn called Gary, Daisy and Ileisha to the Crew Mess for the preference sheet meeting, they were all pleased to learn that the primary would be a returning guest with whom they’d all had a lot of fun last season. “[‘Big Jim’] can’t wait for another trip on Parsifal III … for more nighttime debauchery,” Glenn read. Sounds like a fun and relatively easy charter. Yay!

Later that afternoon, Colin called Daisy to meet him on the flybridge for a chat. Good for him. When he asked why she was so upset with him, Daisy said, “You shut me down.” She felt his comments about “accepting constructive criticism from Glenn” at the last tip meeting were insensitive, especially considering the pressure she’d been under. “I know that comment was about me,” she said.

“Glenn making these comments,” Daisy continued, “and then you chirping in … [I was just] overwhelmed.”

“Didn’t want to f***ing make you feel worse,” Colin admitted. “But I did, and I’m sorry.”

Daisy appreciated his apology, and they hugged it out. “I didn’t mean to make you feel bad when you were already feeling bad,” Colin told her. “That was not my intention.” So they’re all good then.

Meanwhile, in the salon, Alex was fishing for information from Mads. “Sooooo,” he began, “how was your night?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Mads dodged.

“Is it true love?” the deckhand teased. “I’m happy for you guys … Just kidding. I’m just jealous.”

Is someone sending smoke signals?

below deck sailing yacht engine

When the guests arrived, they were obviously happy to be back aboard the Parsifal III, and the crew was just as glad to see them. “We missed you!” said the principal, Big Jim.

“I can’t tell you how great it is to have you guys back here,” Glenn said. And since they were already familiar with the boat, the captain suggested they skip the tour and get off the dock, so they could sail. Everyone was agreeable to that idea.

As the guests settled in and the boat was leaving the port, smoke started to pour out the back. “What the f***?” Colin exclaimed. “F*** me!”

Unaware of the engine problem, Glenn was chatting with Big Jim about their trip down the Amalfi Coast. As the billowing cloud of smoke started to become apparent on the flybridge, Jim asked Glenn, “Is there anything you want to tell me about, you know … today’s charter?”

As Colin ran down the stairs to the engine room, alarms started going off. “Hey, that’s the fire alarm going off in the bridge,” Glenn radioed. “Can someone check it, please?”

“We need to anchor, Glenn,” Colin said. “Let’s get into some deeper water.”

“We’re 30 minutes in and we’ve got an engine smoking,” one of the guests commented. “Not good.”

“Everything’s normal,” Colin reported — except for maybe that smoke billowing out of the rear exhaust. I think I can actually smell it from here. “All the temperatures and everything is normal. Obviously, something f***ed up going on inside the engine.” Ya think? Glenn guided the boat into deeper water, and they dropped anchor.

The guests, however, were on vacation and in a good mood. When Daisy brought one of them a fresh cocktail, Big Jim joked he was going to use it “to put the fire out.”

“There’s no fire,” Daisy assured him. “That’s a welcome smoke.” Keep those drinks coming, Dais.

Down in the engine room, Colin discovered “oil dripping out of the turbo.” He explained, “This means that there’s something seriously broken inside the engine or the turbo itself.” Also all the smoke. “I don’t know where I’m sitting on the scale of possible catastrophe. So I’m starting to stress.” Time to tear the engine apart then. For the second time this season. Bummer.

The guests were taking it all in stride, though. “You know, the interior’s been doing amazing,” Jim said.

When Daisy joked that she broke the engine on purpose so they could look good, Jim answered, “They always look good, don’t they, Gary?” No wonder they love these guests. So cheerful and nice.

“They look good, for sure,” Gary agreed. “But then looks can be deceiving … I’m just kidding, Dais!”

“What does ‘boat’ stand for,” Jim quipped. “Break out another thousand.” He’s not wrong. Unless you’re a millionaire and don’t care about throwing money away, it makes more sense to rent or charter than to buy.

Dead in the water

below deck sailing yacht engine

While everyone made jokes about the boat being on fire, the deck crew was getting out all the water toys to give the guests something to do. And Colin discovered the problem: the shaft inside the turbo had completely snapped, explaining where the oil was coming from. The turbo is responsible for forcing air into the engine, which is necessary for combustion, Colin explained. So until the problem was fixed, the Parsifal would be stuck at anchor. At least they had the tender to ferry people back and forth, if necessary. Colin really earned his paycheck this season. I hope he gets more than just tips.

Texting one parts supplier after another, Glenn was frantically trying to locate a replacement for the broken turbo. Supplier after supplier came up empty. Finally, the ninth supplier he contacted answered in the affirmative, “Yes, we have one left, in Amsterdam.” Hello, Federal! Am I the only one who remembers those ads? “When it absolutely, positively has to be there overnight.”

Glenn followed up with a phone call and asked, “How soon can we get it here? … By tomorrow? [That’s] great news.”

When Glenn told him the part would arrive the next day, Colin responded, “F*** yeah! Good work there, Cap!”

Ileisha and Daisy are killing it

below deck sailing yacht engine

Chef Ileisha prepared a fabulous Sardinian-style dinner. She served it family style, so everything arrived at the table at the same time and there was no waiting between courses. The guests were happy, and so was Captain Glenn.

“Daisy and Ileisha have taken on board everything I’ve pointed out,” Glenn interviewed. “They’re making an effort to make sure that they don’t make those same mistakes, and I’m noticing a big improvement.”

“Killing it, huh?” Colin asked the chef.

“If I think I’m killing it,” she quipped, “then does that mean I’m killing it?”

“No,” Colin ribbed her. But they both laughed.

Charter Day 2

below deck sailing yacht engine

Early the next morning, Glenn received a text from the parts supplier: “The turbo piece you’re waiting on is currently in transit and will get to Parsifal within the next few hours.” Excellent news to start the day!

When Chase came up to relieve Alex from his night shift, he immediately started going around complaining about everything he thought Alex didn’t clean. That’s what Chase does. He complains about everybody else while casting himself as the hero in his own movie.

Glenn found Gary and Colin in the Crew Mess and gave them the news that the new turbo was already on its way and should arrive in a few hours.

Meanwhile, Chase and Lucy led an early morning yoga class on the sundeck. “Namaste, everyone!” Chase thought he was a yoga master and went a little overboard on the instructions. Lucy thought he was “cringey.” She was stifling some giggles when Chase put his feet in the air and showed everyone his butt.

Chase throws Alex under the bus

below deck sailing yacht engine

Running into Gary on deck, Chase asked, “Can I speak to you about the boat this morning?”

“Yeah,” Gary said. “It looks like sh**, eh? Look at the anchor pockets!”

Captain Glenn joined the conversation. “This should get rinsed at night,” he said.

“100%,” Gary agreed. “We were just speaking about that.”

“If it’s cool with you, I’m just going to speak with him about it myself,” Chase offered. Um, you’re not his boss, Chase. I don’t think Alex would take kindly to that, Mr. Tattletale.

“No, I’ll have a chat with him, bru,” Gary said.

“Thank you, brother,” Chase brown-nosed. Chase is a real suck-up. He acts like he’s everyone’s buddy while he’s shoving a knife in his “brother’s” back.

“Now I look like a big fat f***ing asshole,” Chase muttered. You got that right, “brother.” F***ing wanker.

While the guests were enjoying their breakfast on the sundeck, the replacement part arrived. “This is good news here, guys,” Chase announced as he carried the heavy box past their breakfast table. Once again painting himself as the hero.

“Run, Chase! Run!” Jim joked. And Chase started running! What an idiot. “Colin, the part’s here!” he announced.

The ladies of the charter asked Daisy if they could raise a flag. Apparently, they’d brought their own flag printed with a picture of Jim sleeping on his back in a beach chair, legs akimbo, completely naked except for a crumpled cloth covering his junk. The words across the bottom of the banner said “Big Jim.” LOL. I see what they did there.

“Is that Jim?!” a shocked Daisy gasped. She admitted in an interview, “That is so gross.” But funny. The rest of the crew thought so, too.

“That’s actually for you,” Daisy told Gary. “Can you hoist this?”

Colin MacRae saves the day, part deux

below deck sailing yacht engine

Once he’d installed the new part, it was time to test it. Colin radioed the captain, “Glenn, Glenn, Colin. We’re ready to fire up.”

“Let’s do it!” Glenn answered, going to the back of the boat to observe the exhaust.

“We’re gonna have to run the engine, let it heat up, then burn off all of the loose oil inside the exhaust system,” Colin explained. “Once that’s burnt off, if there’s no more smoke, we know we fixed the problem. And we can set sail again.”

Once the boat started up, a lot of smoke poured out the rear exhaust. “We’ve got a smoke alarm in the laz,” Gary reported. “Can someone just check that? There’s fire alarms going off.”

“You can mute it,” Glenn responded. “There’s no fire in the laz. It’s just the smoke getting sucked back in.”

“I don’t know if it’s me,” Glenn radioed Colin, “but it seems like the level of smoke has definitely dropped off. Probably still a little bit to burn off.”

“Everything down here is amazing,” Colin informed Glenn. “No oil, no exhaust anywhere.”

Good news all around. Everyone was excited as Daisy instructed the interior crew, “I would fully stow because this looks like … we’re gonna sail hard.”

Even Glenn admitted, “It’s pretty crazy to have two massive unrelated engine failures in such a short time. I’ve got my fingers crossed that we’ve gotten our bad luck out of the way, so we can give Jim and his gang a monumental sail.”

Hoist that flag, boys! Big Jim is going sailing! “Thank you, Colin!” the guests all said.

When Jim asked his wife, “What are you doing, Marnie?” she answered, “Admiring the flag.”

He looked up and said, “Oh, my heavens! What in the hell is wrong with you?”

“That’s our new courtesy flag,” Glenn told him, laughing.

“Wow!” Big Jim chortled. “How can you not love that?” Indeed.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht TV Show on Bravo: canceled or renewed?

(Photo: Bravo Media)

Below Deck Sailing Yacht has its return date set. Season five of the reality series will return next month, and Bravo has announced new crew members who will join Capt. Glenn Shephard, Chief Stew Daisy Kelliher, and First Mate Gary King on board the Parsifal III this season.

Chef Cloyce Martin, Chief Engineer Davide Morosi, stews Diana Cruz and Danni Warren, and deckhands Keith Allen and Emma Crouch will join the cast for season five of the series, and they will bring some drama with them.

Bravo revealed the following about what is to come in season five:

Capt. Glenn and his expert crew set sail on Parsifal III to the luxury party capital of the world, Ibiza. While Ibiza is known for its sunny day parties and crystal-clear coast, it’s stormy waters ahead for the crew as they navigate blossoming boatmances, competitive co-workers and tense personal dynamics, all while trying to raise the bar every charter. After a distracting love triangle last season that took her focus away from work, Daisy is ready to take the reins back in the interior department with a new sense of energy and determination. However, plans for a stress-free charter season are threatened when her stews question her leadership. On deck, Gary attempts to keep his team motivated as one crew member struggles to learn the ropes. In the galley, Chef Cloyce charms the crew and guests but at only 22, he may be too inexperienced to meet the demands of the high-maintenance charter guests.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht returns on October 7th . The trailer for season five is below.

General Description

Shed kept on the Upper Chesapeake on the Sassafras River. Gorgeous, well-appointed and very cared for by her current owners since 2009. Although they did not fish her - her outriggers are available.

Seller comments: "Our 1996 42 Egg Harbor Convertible has Detroit 6V92 Engines, one has @1790 hrs. the other @1860, the previous owner used it a lot for fishing and trolled on one engine for the extra hours. The bottom was painted in June of this year 2024, I purchased the boat in November 2009...the boat was located in Baltimore at the time.

The boat has a wet bar, and tuna door as extra options at the time, in 2010 rebuilt starboard engine, new head, valves and three cylinders, replaced 20-gallon water heater @ 2013, the entire interior was updated in 2011, new bolsters, carpeting, reupholstered furniture, wallpaper, upgraded lighting system to LED. Inverter for large refrigerator and one outlet was installed @ 2015. New Vacuflush system and waste hoses @ 2020. The boat has an extra set of props (one set is three blade the other 4 blade Michigan Nibral). The Chartplotter was upgraded to Raymarine e125 with new sonar @ 2015. New VHF radio and antenna installed @ 2014"

Introduced in 1995, the Egg Harbor 42 Convertible was a completely restyled version of the previous Egg Harbor 42 - a state-of-the art boat by the standards of her day, with as much (or more) eye appeal than anything in her class. The 42 was built on low-deadrise hull with a sharp bow entry, a solid fiberglass bottom, and a wide 15-foot beam. Her big 100-square-foot cockpit rivals many larger boats in both size and amenities, - Refrigerator, S/S sink, Live Bait Well & cabinets.

Below deck, features a Two stateroom, Two-head interior. The updated wet bar features an all-Granite countertop in the salon, where large windows offer panoramic views of the water. Updated Window Treatments include valances with Designer Blinds and recessed Lighting that create a luxurious Salon setting. Large L-Shaped Leather Settee, Flat Screen TV, and Stereo System all complete the look of a much newer Vessel.

One step down, to port, is a U-shaped galley with an all Granite serving counter, and updated refrigerator/freezer,S/S Sink and microwave. Additional features include a bow pulpit, central vacuum system, teak interior joinery, salon entertainment center with Flat Screen TV, a below-deck livewell, tackle drawers, cockpit bait freezer, insulated in-deck fish/storage box, transom door, and fresh/raw-water wash downs.
