Absolute Navetta 70: the fascination of an all-new yacht

A new yacht crowns the exciting last months of 2023 for Absolute Yachts, which has officially presented the Absolute Navetta 70 : an innovative and elegant model that overturns the standards we have been used to so far, redefining the concept of “luxury” on board.

The new model fits into the “Navetta” range just below the 75-foot flagship, combining the special features of the shipyard ‘s models with completely new design and styling solutions. The new Navetta stands out for its originality , architecture, design and attention to detail , which are taken to their maximum expression in this craft. The keyword chosen for the Navetta 70 is “ Allure ,” in reference to her innovative, modern yet classical appeal, based on architecture.

The charismatic design introduces a different direction to the luxury yachting industry, but let us now see it in detail.

Exterior Design

The Navetta 70 presents all the distinctive characteristics hallmarking Absolute Navetta yachts, such as the elegant open lateral gunwales, covered walkways, extensive glazing on main and lower decks. Added to this, however, are the many innovative elements that revolutionize the style of the Navetta 70: dynamic and attractive exterior lines , a flybridge and cockpit that are much wider than in previous models, and fine finishes that raise the level of elegance and luxury on board.

From the cockpit terrace (equipped with a third mooring station), a covered staircase leads up to the flybridge , which becomes even more important on this Absolute Navetta 70.

In this large upper area it is possible to enjoy moments of relaxation and conviviality with family and friends, taking advantage of the large table that can seat up to 8 people. The hard top can assume two different configurations: it can either be openable if one opts for coverage by a sunshade, or fixed if one prefers the integration of solar panels.

This second option is particularly relevant to Absolute, which has always paid considerable attention to sustainability , even to the point of integrating this issue into its corporate ethos, characterized by a deep love and respect for the marine environment. The solar panels, which are light, efficient, flexible, and resistant to the effects of salt water, are equally useful while sailing and during marina stopovers.

Moreover, the flybridge provides the owner and his guest with a plurality of comforts, from the forward helm station to a wet bar, outdoor galley, and the leisure area astern with designer furniture that can be rearranged to suit the occasion.

Absolute Navetta 70: Interior

The interior of this new Navetta are design to excel: bleached timber in sophisticated shades ranging from white to grey and black, with rounded corners on the furnishing accessories, and bronzed details for sleek and glamorous looks.

The elegance and comfort of this yacht can be perceived in every corner, from the neutral and light colour palette to the solutions designed to offer maximum freedom of movement and luxury on board, such as very high ceilings, space-saving sliding doors and the minimal use of steps in the interiors. These styling innovations make the spaces of this Navetta feel like being on board a much larger superyachts, and to further embellish the rooms Absolute has thought of a circular motif that is taken up in almost every area.

The Absolute Navetta Series Is Modern Luxury Cruising Perfection

Luxury cruising yachts have changed and the Absolute Navetta series is leading the way. With trend-setting designs and efficient performance, the Navetta series has appeal to both traditional motor yacht owners and offers a truly luxurious option for "slow-cruising" aficionados that may want a more modern look. In just a few short years, Absolute Yachts has been awarded numerous accolades for the Navetta series. The flagship Navetta 73 has won both 'Boat of the Year' at the Slovenian Awards as well as 'Best Innovation' at the World Yacht Trophies in Cannes. Similarly, the Navetta 48 won the same 'Boat of the Year' award in 2019.

"Since we became a dealer, Absolute's Navetta models have been at the top when it comes to popularity," said Jay Hendrix , Vice President of SI Yachts. "Anytime we have a customer step on board at a boat show or during our summer events in Montauk , they are blown away. It's just a different kind of boat. It has that Italian style, but the dedication to comfort is also very apparent and popular for American boaters.

The team at Absolute hasn't completely re-invented the wheel, but rather made a commitment to making each area of the boat the very best possible with an emphasis on comfort. Small, personal details go a long way. Consider breaking down a yacht into sections. The flybridge is one section, the cockpit is one section, the hydraulic swim platform, and so on. If you were able to compare each section, side-by-side, with the competing yachts in the Navetta's size and class, the differences are often subtle, but powerful. The combination of an abundance of natural light, intelligent use of space, and these thoughtful details in each section create a winning model series for the Italian luxury yacht builder. Below, examine several of those subtle differences.

1.) We love the Summer Kitchen.

Almost every yacht today has a hydraulic swim platform that lowers down into the water and allows for some great sunbathing. Launching a tender or scuba diving off of the yacht become much easier with this feature and it's generally a given that your luxury yacht will have one. But the rest of this space is often more utility than entertainment, such as a door to the engine room or extra storage. On the Navetta 52 , Absolute has created a summer kitchen to further enhance the sociability of this area. It includes a grill, a sink with fresh-water, and counter space for food preparation. Lower the platform slightly to grill with your feet in the water - a truly unique experience!

2.) Finally a foredeck lounge and sunbathing area that isn't missing anything.

There's no better place to enjoy the sun from your yacht than the bow. Most luxury yachts today have turned this area into a sunbathing station complete with sunpads and drink holders. The more sophisticated brands in this class have also added a pedastal table and seating for enjoying a meal al fresco. Absolute's Navetta models go the extra distance by not leaving out a thing. The new Absolute Navetta 68 is a perfect example. The sunpads are placed forward and can comfortably fit four guests. The outsides of the sunpads are lined with drink holders. Moving aft, there is a space between the sunpads and the u-shaped couch with outdoor table. Speakers are hidden, but deliver exceptional sound. And best of all, you can easily install the over-head canopy for extra shade while at anchor. What was once considered an after-thought years ago, the modern luxury cruiser seeks to maximize the foredeck space for socializing. No one has executed this better than Absolute.

3.) Yachting is fun in the sun, but sometimes we need a break.

How many times have you attempted to serve cocktails or hors' devours in the aft cockpit only to find the rays from the setting sun still too powerful to really enjoy yourselves? The team at Absolute understands that after spending the day lounging on the bow or snorkeling off the swim platform that maybe a break from the sun is needed to rejuvenate. The aft cockpit dining space is a popular area at the end of the day to unwind and enjoy a meal. The retractable shade, as seen here on the Navetta 52, is the perfect detail to compliment the comfortable dining space.

4.) Sun or shade? It's your choice to make on the flybridge. 

It's hard to imagine a more perfectly designed flybridge than on the newest Absolute Navetta models. The outdoor grill, wet-bar, and sound system will keep the party going or create the perfect evening ambiance. The seating and dining areas are abundant and comfortable. There is even additional space for sunbathing with a gorgeous view from the upper deck. The Navetta series hardtop though offers owners and guests options on how they want to spend their time on the bridge. With a sunroof in the hardtop and a retractable sunshade aft, the flybridge can be a sunbathers paradise or an escape into the shade. The Navetta series flybridge will leave you and your guests wanting for absolutely nothing.

5.) Twin or full sized bed in the guest stateroom? You decide with the push of a button.

Sleeping arrangements can often leave some guests that are couples sleeping in separate beds. Now your guests can sleep in the same bed after a romantic evening under the stars with the push of a button. On the Navetta 68, for example, one of the four guests cabins has two twin beds that can converge to form a full-sized berth with the push of a button. A fantastic option from a thoughtful group of designers at Absolute!

The big news from Ferretti this year at the Cannes Boat Show is the second model in the Infynito range, the Ferretti Infynito 80

Like its bigger sister, the Infynito 95 , the Infynito 80 is all about comfort, volume and refinement rather than sporty looks and high speed. To that end it features a bluff bow, a wide beam of almost 21ft (6.36m) and a raised pilothouse design that frees up the main deck for more entertaining space.

However, the defining feature of every Infynito is the unusual covered foredeck lounge dubbed the ‘all-season terrace’. With its louvred sunroof and privacy-glass bow window, it provides enough shelter to use all year round while still allowing guests to enjoy the views and feeling of being outside.

With the helm up above, the main deck is given over to entertaining

Owners can choose to have this fitted with either an extending dinette for alfresco meals or a bar and stools with a full-width opening window into the galley. With no lower helm to worry about, this galley area occupies the entire front section of the saloon, leaving the rear half free for a large lounge and either an inside bar or dining area.

While the 95 is a proper tri-deck model with a fully enclosed upper deck, this new 80 has a more conventional open flybridge with a hard top over the front half. Owners can opt to have the windscreen and side windows raised to meet this and create a semi-enclosed area if they feel the need for more protection.

Power comes from a pair of conventional 1,200hp MAN diesels, giving a modest top speed of 21 knots and a cruising range of 1,000nm at 12 knots. In keeping with the trend for silent running at anchor, it packs a lithium-ion battery with sufficient grunt to power all the ship’s systems overnight without needing to fire up the generator.

Ferretti will also be exhibiting a facelifted version of its popular 670 flybridge. As well as tweaks to the exterior styling and interior fit-out, it features a new flybridge layout with more seating, a better dining area, an aft sunpad and a hard top with sunroof. No images of it have yet been released.

According to the latest Forbes ‘s Real-Time Billionaires List, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is currently worth around $204 billion, making him the second-wealthiest person on the planet, just behind Tesla CEO Elon Musk .

So handing over an estimated $500 million for his 410-foot Koru , the world’s largest sailing yacht , another $75 million for Abeona , its 250-foot support vessel, and then paying the $30 million or so a year to cover running costs for both, should be well within his budget.

Bezos surprised the boating world when he opted for a classically styled, three-masted sailing yacht instead of some flashy mega motoryacht. What’s more it has a buxom wooden sculpture on the forepeak, typical of 19th-century sailing vessels. And since taking delivery last year, he and his fiancé, Lauren Sánchez, have been using the yacht to cruise the world in style.

While secrecy still shrouds Koru , especially its interior and many of its technical features, we take a closer look at what makes it, arguably, the most interesting sailing superyacht in years.

Designed as a Modern Classic

Koru would never be described as sleek, or elegant even. But she does have a classical style. Designed by the Dutch masters at Dykstra Naval Architecture, the boat is distinguished by its towering navy-blue steel hull, snowy-white, two-level aluminum superstructure, sweeping canoe stern, and a trio of soaring masts. Her design inspiration is said to be the triple-masted schooner Eos , built by Germany’s Lürssen Yachts in 2006 for American media mogul Barry Diller. And, ignoring the current trend of oversized windows, Koru ‘s hull sides are dotted with traditional portholes with smaller-than typical windows for the upper decks (no doubt helping to protect guests from paparazzi lenses). Little is known about the yacht’s interior design, other than it’s the work of London-based Mlinaric, Henry and Zervudachi studio. Oceanco’s website describes the interior as a “timeless, contemporary style, with natural wood tones complemented by a palette of warm neutrals and beautifully patterned textiles.”

Claiming the Prize for Size

At 410 feet bow to stern and with a beam of 56 feet, Koru is the largest sailing yacht in the world. Some might argue the title should go to the 468-foot Sailing Yacht A . But that quirky, Philippe Stark–designed triple-master is considered a “sail-assisted motoryacht” rather than a true sailing yacht. Koru is also big inside, with a reported internal volume of 3,300 gross T=tons, that offers room for up to 18 guests in nine cabins and accommodations for a crew of 36.

A True Sailor

Full credit to Jeff Bezos for ignoring his fellow billionaires’ penchant for giant, diesel-guzzling superyachts. (Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg recently took delivery of his 387-foot Launchpad , powered by quadruple MTU engines packing a combined 23,400 hp.) With its giant, more-than-20,000-square-foot sail plan (including three mainsails and three, cutter-style headsails), Koru has been regularly photographed cruising under sail. It’s also believed the yacht is making an effort to focus on sustainability, from reports of it testing out a prototype kinetic energy recovery system that converts wave-induced motion into electrical energy. The vessel is also believed to feature a hybrid power system with large battery banks that run its systems at night while at anchor.

Its 250-Foot, $75 Million “Tender”

The challenge with sailing yachts, even one that’s 410 feet long, is that it’s nearly impossible to land a helicopter on the deck. So Bezos commissioned a 250-foot support vessel, named Abeona after the Roman goddess of travelers. The largest shadow vessel ever built by Holland’s Damen Yachting, this explorer comes with a rear-deck helipad and hangar big enough to accommodate an Airbus ACH-135 helicopter. There’s also space aboard for a small armada of water toys and tenders, plus accommodations below decks for up to 45 crew and support staff.

Built Under Total Secrecy

Tasked with taking Koru from concept to reality was the superyacht builder Oceanco, based south of Rotterdam in Alblasserdam, Holland. The famed yard, owned by billionaire Mohammed Al Barwani, who also owns Turquoise Yachts in Turkey, recently completed Steven Spielberg’s new 357-foot superyacht Seven Sea s, and the similar-sized Bravo Eugenia , launched in 2018 for Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Koru was reportedly first commissioned in 2018 as Project Y721 and delivered to the Amazon founder in Gibraltar in April 2023.

What’s in a Name?

While a betting person might have predicted that Bezos would have given his sailing yacht a more Amazon-connected name, like Prime, Deliverance, or even Blue Origin after his space company, he picked Koru . The name is said to be Maori for “loop” or “coil” and resembles the spiral shape of an unfurling silver fern frond. It’s said to be an integral symbol of New Zealand Maori art that symbolizes new life and new beginnings. Look closely at the wooden figurehead on Koru ‘s bow and the necklace around the woman’s neck features a pendant shaped like the koru symbol.

A Bridge Too Far

As Koru was nearing completion in 2021, word got out that builder Oceanco had approached the city of Rotterdam in Holland, offering to pay for the partial disassembly of the historic 97-year-old Koningshaven lift-bridge, which was too low for the yacht with its triple 230-foot masts in place, to pass under on its way to the North Sea. The city reportedly consented, but the move resulted in a huge public outcry with threats to plaster Koru with eggs as it passed through the bridge. Oceanco withdrew its application and instead towed the yacht to Rotterdam’s Greenport shipyard west of the city, transported the masts by barge, and installed them there.

The Places You’ll Go

Hot on the heels of Koru ‘s handover in Gibraltar in April last year, the superyacht has seemingly been cruising non-stop. The compact dimensions, 16 meters long and almost 5 meters wide, allow the 530 yacht to deliver grand Italian luxury and cruising immersed in such comfort until now unheard of in a yacht of this size.

Ferretti 530 yacht boasts three revolutionary innovations: the full beam master cabin with chaise longue and two large open view windows that make it a real suite at sea level bathed in light, tones and the natural essences of teak. Moving the galley from the center to the aft section creates a unique open space that includes the saloon, galley, cocktail bar and the dining area, the cockpit area continues thanks to the tilting window. The roll bar free sky lounge and the spoiler allow the 530 a sporty appearance combined with elegantly formal lines.
