Luxury yacht ZIGGY from Ocean Alexander was launched in 2021 from the shipyard in Taiwan. She measures 35.13m (115'3") and is a 35R model constructed with a GRP hull and superstructure, with naval architecture from the shipyard and interior and exterior styling by Evan K. Marshall. The accommodation sleeps up to 10 guests over five en-suite cabins with a professional crew of five to take care of every detail.

EXTERIOR The main deck aft is a sheltered environment offering a cosy space to relax on the C-shaped sofa and enjoy coffee mornings with friends and family. Two stairways lead down to the lower deck swim platform which connects to the beach club to create a spacious indoor/outdoor entertainment area beside the water.

Side walkways along the main deck lead to stairways up to the foredeck, where guests have panoramic views from the C-shaped sofa with drinks table, or the broad sunbed across the bow. The upper deck aft has a large circular dining table for intimate meals between the group. Two sofa/loungers are places along the stern for guests to savour after-dinner drinks along with the views.

On the sundeck, there is a Jacuzzi aft and centre with a large sunbed on both sides, a wet bar with stool seating to port and sofa seating forward on both sides for guests to sit and take in the views.

INTERIOR The lower deck layout places the crew accommodation forward, the guest accommodation amidships, the engine room behind and the beach club with gym in the stern.

The Master suite is forward on the main deck, the galley to port and the main foyer with day head to starboard. The formal dining area and main salon are combined into one large room aft, with the formal dining area seating up to 10 guests in a bright contemporary space with glass sliding doors on both sides to create a more alfresco experience. The main salon is aft to port and consists of a corner sofa and armchairs around a coffee table, while the widescreen TV is to starboard and a glass sliding door lead out onto the main deck aft.

ZIGGY Specifications

From the main foyer guests and crew have access to the upper deck, where the helm station is forward and the skylounge behind. The skylounge offers a cosy space to relax with the latest films or live sports, and provides a large corner sofa, coffee table and widescreen TV to port, a drinks/games table behind and a wet bar to starboard.

Yacht Accommodation

The accommodation sleeps a maximum of 10 guests in 5 en-suite cabins: 1 Master suite, 2 double cabins and 2 twin cabins. The Master suite is full beam on the main deck forward, and within thee is a king-sized bed, widescreen TV, a desk/vanity to starboard and two armchairs to port. A large wardrobe is placed forward on both sides of the room and a spacious en-suite bathroom with a sink and toilet on both sides and a shared central bathtub and shower. The double cabins are amidships to port and starboard on the lower deck. Both have a queen-sized bed, widescreen TV, desk/vanity, wardrobe and an en-suite bathroom with a sink, toilet and shower. The twin cabins are forward of the double cabins to port and starboard respectively. Both have two single beds, a widescreen TV, desk/vanity, wardrobe and an en-suite bathroom with a sink, toilet and shower. The professional crew of 5 will keep everything running efficiently throughout the cruise.

Step on board the first two hulls of the all-new Ocean Alexander 35R

The Ocean Alexander 35R utilises smart layouts, forward-thinking design and interesting materials. Kevin Koenig steps aboard two of the builder’s most recent deliveries

A yacht christening can be a heady experience, especially when the champagne is flowing and the photographers’ bulbs are popping – bright-white halos in the hot, black night. Such was the scene at the Fort Lauderdale Pier Sixty-Six last fall for the official launch of Ziggy , hull number one of Ocean Alexander’s new 35R series. The owners stood proudly at the top of the high, plumb bow and, with a few sweet words, let a bottle of bubbly on a rope swing freely to break itself upon the yacht’s forward section. It was a memorable sight, save for just one small problem. The bottle, built like a tank, refused to break – because this isn’t the movies, and things don’t always work out perfectly. The sale of the first two 35Rs, though, makes a pretty good run at flawlessness. Hull number two, built on spec, arrived in Fort Lauderdale for the boat show, where she was snapped up by a client who named her Entrepreneur .

Ziggy ’s story began at the 2019 Cannes Yachting Festival, where Marine Max’s broker Scott Roberton met her future owners, Bonnie and Harold Zeigler. “They knew they were looking for something new,”  he says, “and as much as they liked the (previously introduced) 90R, they wanted something a bit larger. I told them we were working on something bigger, and when we got back to the States, I could show them some ideas. So, in October, we met at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, and that’s where we introduced the project to them in animation form. And it went really well, to say the least.”

“They really took the plunge,” Evan K Marshall , the yacht’s London-based designer, says. “When I met them for the first time, all we had was just a rendering as the boat was in development. First, they saw the 2D line drawing, and they liked it. So we broke out models, renderings and animation. We had fly-around CGI, an outside-to-inside thing set in the Bahamas, and they loved it. They left with Scott, came back the next day and signed a contract. And that’s how Ziggy got off the ground and became their boat.”

Harold Zeigler had been keeping an eye on Ocean Alexander for some time. “We were coming out of a 85 Westport, and I started looking at OA a while back and saw them constantly improving, and we eventually chartered one with some friends,” he says. “We were thinking about getting another Westport, but then we saw the designs of the 35R and fell in love. We had looked at some other builders, but the video OA put together for us is what really sold us. It was hull No 1, so without that video it would have been hard to know what we were getting.”

Zeigler and his wife are experienced cruisers who knew what they wanted from their boat. They prefer cruising the US East Coast, from the Bahamas up to Maine. And with this experience came some build preferences that Ocean Alexander was happy to accommodate, one of which had to do directly with the chilly climes in the dark gray waters off the Pine Tree State – the design of the beach club.

For some time, the Taiwanese builder had been looking for ways to expand that feature everyone seems to want nowadays: an interior lounge at water level. OA’s 90R already had a beach club, with glass doors that open onto a fixed platform and keep the inside space bright when they’re closed. The Zeiglers liked that idea. “One of their first requests was sliding-glass doors like the 90R has (the animation had a fold-down transom door); they liked the idea of the glass doors because they cruise up north where it’s colder, but they could still have light come in,” Marshall says.

Ocean Alexander had planned instead a transom door in solid fiberglass that lowers hydraulically to form a larger swim platform and reveal a neat beach club with seating and a bar tucked inside the lower deck. This solution was what they adopted for the second 35R, Entrepreneur . Seeing the two yachts side by side offers an interesting perspective on two different solutions.

The designer and the shipyard devised a clever way to keep light inside the beach club even when the solid composite door is closed – an impressive, curved skylight installed as a nice feature in the aft deck lounge just above. So that when guests sit on the sofas on the aft deck, they can also have a view down to the beach club; an excellent way to visually link the two spaces, which are otherwise connected with two sets of stairs.

Ocean Alexander also included a good-sized sauna on both hulls, accessible from the beach club, plus space for a small gym. Future hulls will enjoy even more space. OA has done more engineering and found a way to move the engine exhaust trunk forward to allow the beach club to gain an extra 18 inches of beam, or just enough space for a second bike.

The treatment of the beach club is just one of many customisations on board Ziggy . It does not take long to see her interior is entirely different from that of Entrepreneur , from the colours (easy to do) to the layout (more challenging). One of the striking design details in Ziggy ’s interior is a wave pattern cut by a CNC machine from a composite material.  It decorates a centrally located sideboard that sets the dining room apart from the saloon and then repeats like a fractal on door inserts, furniture and panelling throughout the yacht.

“I included it in the renderings we made, and the owners saw it and loved it, so we decided to do it for them,” Marshall says, although the yard decided not to repeat this design for the entire line.

On Entrepreneur , the sideboard, with a wet bar, is to the side, and the layout creates one flowing area from saloon to dining space, which is off to the port side, in front of floor-to-ceiling windows. In addition, it leaves room for a lovely staircase that loops its way to the other decks and a wide passage to the owner’s suite. It’s a layout that Marshall and OA rightly see as having a more European vibe – and it’s not the only one.

The yachts’ respective galleys also draw a sharp contrast between what could be described as American and European boating styles. Ziggy has neat, little pocket doors leading from the saloon to the country kitchen, which has a breakfast dinette to port so that guests can interact with the chef.

However, OA wanted to show something different with the newer hull. Entrepreneur ’s galley reflects the European aim of the saloon, and is separated from it by an efficient, single door. Although well-appointed with full-size refrigerators and freezers and a generous counter for food prep, it has no dinette. Instead, there is another door leading to the side deck where the crew can discreetly enter and leave.

Regardless of the layout, Marshall is particularly excited about the residential feel aboard the OA35R, which he attributes to its huge windows. In the salon alone, a 10ft-long piece runs from floor to ceiling.

Marshall sought to emphasise the open and homey feel with the furnishings. “We didn’t use traditional boat furniture. The look is akin to what you’d find in a household, and that’s a quality you often get on much larger projects,” he says. “Yacht furniture [in this class] is starting to be on a par with house furniture in that it’s more freestanding. We’re also using a combination of materials. For example, the tops of the furniture might be stone, but that stone goes down the sides in several pieces to create what we call a waterfall effect.”

Marshall also points to the use of Alpi, a stained wood product that mimics whatever species is called for, from ebony to eucalyptus. “Alpi is becoming like Cambria,” he says of the composite stone that is popular on yachts in this class. “Maybe 10 years ago, people would have turned their noses up at it, but now it’s everywhere. People think it’s for cost, but it’s not. It’s for the consistency, which is excellent.”

Another exciting use of glass is found in the spacious walk-in closets in the owner’s stateroom. Though a more ornamental usage of the material, it is key to this model’s focus on luxury. Namely, the closets have jewelry and watch cases, much like a jewelry store would, so that the antique Patek, or that little trinket you found under the Christmas tree in the Van Cleef & Arpels bag, don’t waste their shine in some dark drawer.

“Some production builders might build you a shoe rack,” Marshall  says with a chuckle, “but I don’t think you’re going to see something like this in too many places.”

Another exceptional space here is the owner’s bathroom, large and full of light, thanks to another big skylight above the tub. Two seats can take advantage of stunning views in the bedroom itself, and a desk can be positioned on the other side, looking out for inspiration.

On Ziggy , it’s worth noting one last glass-oriented feature – the impressive wine glass storage. “These owners have 100 wine glasses on their 35,” Marshall says. “They wanted them on all the levels of the boat, so they didn’t have to move them. We were able to accommodate the request by making safe and discreet storage for all of them on every deck.”

The Zeiglers like to entertain, and they find the 35R more than up to the task. “We have had cocktail parties with 25 people on board, and the night we had the christening, we had about 60 people on the boat, and we thought she handled it exceptionally well,” Zeigler says. (I was there, and the 35R could have fitted another 20 people on board, in my estimation.)

A big reason for the boat’s space is her full-bodied design. Of course, the R in the model’s name stands for Revolution, and it’s OA’s nod to the recent motor yacht trend of building boats with big volume, starting from the bow. The gross tonnage on this 35 metre yacht is just below 300GT.

“The wide body allowed us to put a spacious master [suite] on the main deck, and helped with overall interior space as well,” says Brian Ku, Ocean Alexander’s engineering department manager. A wider bow with no or little flare can mean a wet ride, but Ku had the antidote. “We gave this boat a wave-piercing design that breaks water before it hits the hull, so there is very little splash when under way,” he says. The quasi-vertical bow design and quickly increasing beam make room for a generous forward lounge. And the sundeck is another large outdoor recreation space, which can be set up in any number of ways, with or without a spa pool.

The style, volume and luxury of this new OA make for happy owners. For the owners of Entrepreneur , the happiness came from buying a turnkey yacht. As for the Zeiglers, who were so involved, they enjoyed the build. “I’m sure we will stick with OA for our next boat,” Harold says. “From a service standpoint they’ve been incredibly solid the whole way.”

Even with the distance and significant time difference from the US, to say nothing of Covid-19-related disruption, the build process went smoothly. “Ocean Alexander was amazing to work with when it came to answering questions thoroughly and within 24 hours. Whether it was modifications to the galley or the closets, the turnaround time was unbelievable,” Roberton says. “I think the engineering and technical side of OA is further ahead of other manufacturers. This boat took a few years to build, and we’d get pictures every few weeks – you’re not going to find that at many places.”

And for Marshall, the 35R is a particularly sweet accomplishment. “I’ve had this dream that I’ve been envisioning for a long time,” he says. “When I first came on with OA some years ago, I was just kind of tweaking existing models, but the 35R [along with the 37L] is a brand-new design. This evolution is what we were brought on board to deliver. And it’s not a finger snap, you can’t do this kind of thing overnight, but we’ve now done it, and I think we’ve helped establish OA as a major player in the industry. And it’s just nice to see that dream come true.”

And isn’t that something worth raising a glass to?

116-Foot Super Yacht Spotted In Fairhaven & It’s Stunning

For some of us, it’s boating season. For a select few, it’s yachting season.

Every summer, Newport is a hot spot for yachts, but sometimes, those yachts make a pit stop on the SouthCoast. A 116-foot superyacht was recently spotted at the Fairhaven Shipyard, owned by Bonnie and Harold Zeigler--former owners of Zeigler Automotive.

The Zeiglers of Michigan

Bonnie and Harold Zeigler have been in love since they were teenagers and have been married for 54 years. They were the proud owners of Zeigler Auto Group, spanning 41 dealerships in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin.

Harold’s son owns the family business now, allowing Bonnie and Harold to be the ultimate snowbirds between Key Largo, Florida and Michigan.

In 2019, the couple were searching for a yacht in the 110-foot range. According to Yachts International , they fell in love with a 116-foot model that Evan K. Marshall of Ocean Alexander was developing.

“After the boat was delivered in summer 2021 — on time — the Zeiglers spent several months cruising New England,” said the publication. “ Ziggy accommodated the whole family. ... They hosted a party for about 25 friends and were pleased with how well the sky lounge deck worked for entertaining.”

A Superyacht Named Ziggy

Ziggy is hull number one in Ocean Alexander’s 35R series and it is luxury at its finest. Equipped with an exercise space, sauna, and huge swim platform, Ziggy is a sight to behold.

“This boat has just about everything you could imagine,” said MarineMax Sales Consultant Scott Robertson during the yacht’s world debut.

Summer has just begun. Hopefully, the Zeiglers enjoyed the SouthCoast experience before setting off into the sunset.

I saw that Yaught behind Selfridge on Saturday, and it looked like there was about 15 people just on the middle deck. No telling how many it would hold inside the cabin. Not made for fishing, that's for sure.

Saw Walleye Mike and this ship Friday morning. A friend of mine said he watched them put 17K in fuel in it up by Port Huron.  

Three's good company

After a point, you're paying to drive your fuel around. Most people who have yachts don't fill their gas tank full.

I bought gas on the lake in June. it was $6.50 gallon.  

That dude probably has the tanker truck deliver his fuel to wherever he has that yacht moored at. No pulling into any gas docks for him!!

A Sleek Super Yacht Is Docked On The Halifax Waterfront – Here’s The Inside Scoop

Note: We will look at yachts that are a few years old. Very few people buy brand-new yachts as the price comes down a lot after only a few years.

How much is a small yacht? Let’s start at 40 feet length.

40 Foot Yacht Cost

A 40-foot yacht can be found used for around $200,000 and new models can cost as much as a million dollars. There are always lots of used yachts for sale around 40 feet in length, which makes them more attractive to first-time buyers.

Technically, a yacht begins at 23 feet. However, yachts that size will more often be referred to as boats.

A 40-foot yacht is a great option for looking for relative simplicity and plenty of comfort and capability. This size is great for day trips in the Caribbean dedicated to speed boating or simple cruising.

The size remains manageable, but the vessel can be updated with extra living spaces and amenities as desired, with a more affordable price than larger options.

The maintenance prices will remain lower as well.

Make sure you are considering the age of your yacht. Even if it is on the smaller end, it will be more expensive if it is new and custom-built to your wants.

Even if you think a 40-foot yacht is the cheapest option, these small factors make for a sliding price scale.

You might find that a smaller, new, custom yacht is more expensive than an older, simpler, larger yacht. One benefit of an older yacht is that it should have the improvements and equipment that make it comfortable to operate and will not have those additional costs.

50 Foot Yacht Cost

50-foot yachts are  normally owner-operated, so you wouldn’t need to pay for a crew. Now we are around the size of 2-bedroom yachts.

They can provide more living space giving the owner flexibility for more guests and making it a more permanent residential option. With more space comes the opportunity to install more amenities as well.

The biggest difference between the 40-foot vessel and the 50-foot is the accommodations.

Expect three-cabin layouts, which give plenty of space for rest. The opportunity to create guest rooms, owners’ suite, and entertainment spaces are better with these yachts.

How much is a large yacht? Let’s  step up to 60 foot.

60 Foot Yacht Cost

Now we’re looking at 2-bedroom yacht prices. A yacht in this range approaches the upper end of the owner/operator criteria.

This means that owners need to decide whether they can handle this size yacht on their own or if they need to hire outside help from a crew.

If you’re thinking of buying a boat this size, the cost may not be an issue, but understand that adding crew members adds substantial extra expenses! Crew salaries start at around $3K /mth for junior members and $10K for captains and experienced crew members.

This size is great for longer travels beyond day trips and adds more and more space for extra amenities. Hosting guests becomes easier.

We’re now looking at 3-bedroom yachts. Once you reach this size yacht, it is almost guaranteed you will need a crew to help operate it. A crewed yacht is very different from an owner-operated yacht.

This is just shy of the superyacht category, so if you settle on this size, know you are almost there!

As previously mentioned, as the yacht size gets larger, so do the number of factors that make the purchase more layered and complex.

When yachts reach this size, the interior layout begins to change more drastically. They often have a spacious main deck perfect for dining and entertaining guests, whereas below, the yacht would likely have four or more cabins and crew quarters.

With more rooms comes more cost and more opportunity to customize the space to make it your own.

Harbor fees is another expense for yacht owners. It’s also a yearly fee that varies but as a rule of thumb, you can expect to pay around $100 per foot per year, depending on how popular the marina is. You will also have to be on a waitlist if you want a good location.

How Much Does a Luxury Yacht Cost?

When Do You Need a Full-Time Crew?

At length over 50 or 60 feet, you may need a full-time captain or crew. 

A full-time crew person will be needed to keep all the varnished woodwork looking good and all the little things maintained.

Sometimes, you must be honest with yourself about what you want and what you actually need. Be self-aware about your abilities (or lack thereof) in taking care of a specific size yacht.

But the latest generation of tech billionaires, Jeff Bezos , Mark Zuckerberg , and Bill Gates , have upped the ownership ante by creating new style parameters and technologies that have pushed superyacht design forward. Bezos and Zuckerberg also have two of the coolest shadow vessels on the water.

Of course, superyacht ownership might not be all it’s cracked up to be for some of these owners. Besides being spotted everywhere they go, there could be safety concerns. Last weekend, a Florida man jumped on board the tender for Zuckerberg’s support vessel, Wingman , at a marina in San Diego. It’s not clear what his intent was, but he may have been headed for Wingman , or even Zuckerberg’s main vessel, Launchpad , before he was arrested at gunpoint.

In terms of owning a shadow vessel, video mogul Gabe Newell was one of the first to see the benefits, referring to it as an “external hard drive” of the main yacht to house extra staff, crew and a wonderland of toys.

Newell sold his 220-foot Damen support yacht, Dapple , last year to none other than Zuckerberg in preparation for his next big delivery, Project Y722. Newell’s Oceanco new build will go a long way to furthering his investment into ocean exploration. His 2022 purchase of the deep-sea Hadal Exploration System included a Triton 36000/2—the world’s first and only manned-submersible certified for dives to 36,000 feet.

Bezos came under fire for plans to partially demolish the famous De Hef bridge in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, to allow the yacht’s three 230-foot-tall masts to pass underneath. Crisis and controversy were averted when the yacht was instead shipped out of Oceanco’s Alblasserdam facilities in two pieces, before final assembly. Taking delivery of the largest Dutch-built yacht in the world whet Bezos’s appetite, and he twinned the purchase with Abeona , the largest support vessel built by Damen that same year.

Abeona ’s $75 million build cost and 246-foot length are nothing compared to Koru , yet it’s still a serious asset. It sleeps 45 guests and 20 crew, including medical personnel. The large aft deck has a helipad and hangar for a D14 value helicopter, as well as marine gear, tenders, and toys. Zuckerberg’s Wingman is also packed with amenities, though it’s not the only secondhand yacht that came from his 2023 shopping spree. The centi-billionaire scooped up the 387-foot Launchpad (formerly Project 1010), an Espen Øino–designed Feadship originally commissioned by (now sanctioned) Russian oligarch Vladimir Potanin. Zuckerberg is estimated to have paid a whopping $330 million for both yachts combined.

But that’s just over half of the $600 million that Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates is thought to have spent on his custom Feadship Project 821 —the world’s first hydrogen-powered superyacht, which began tests recently. It’s no surprise that Gates, whose Breakthrough Energy Ventures fund has put more than $2 billion into companies that help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, should be the one to break ground on hydrogen-fuel-cell technology within yachting.

Project 821 can’t perform entire crossings on hydrogen, but it can cruise at 10 knots or run hotel functions at anchor for a full week on hydrogen. It also has a nifty sensor-packed smart A/C system and advanced heat recovery system, alongside more luxurious features, such as multiple pools, a wellness area, and a hospital.

With most tech moguls already sorted on the yachting front, only Elon Musk remains in the market to take a custom hydrogen gigayacht off Gates’s hands. Judging by his vocal condemnation of the renewable fuel, referring to hydrogen as “the stupidest way” he could imagine for energy storage, it’s an unlikely match. Instead, the world awaits the arrival of the Tesla boss’s $700 million self-sustaining electric concept Model Y yacht, which he unveiled in 2021.

Despite being an avid charterer (Musk was spotted aboard a yacht in Mykonos in 2022), his comments on X—that he “prefers to work” than have fun on yachts—suggest it could be a very long wait.
