Sheila Finch Painting

Ask Sheila Finch if she is an artist, and she replies “Yes, that is who I am.” Not 'what', but 'who’. The deep truth of this statement has been borne out over and over as she has become the latest source of delightful works for private and corporate art collectors around the globe. Landscapes on the verge of abstracts reveal both her passion and her genius for color, for creating not just a scene, but the mood it engenders, as well. Living and painting from her boat, Sheila gathers scenes from the sea to build a repertoire of visually stunning images. Her skyscapes show the acumen of a painter who knows water. Her art floats between the ethereal realm of abstraction and the concrete texture of realism. Her genius with color developed early in her life. It began at the age of 13 in Ohio when her boyfriend made her a gift of watercolors and an easel. “I was impressed. These were professional artist supplies! He eventually became my husband',” she laughs. Her mother, also an artist, enrolled her in a class to study with a regional artist, concentrating on the basics of studio painting, her only formal training. At the age of 16, Sheila sold her first work and has since been a productive and successful artist who has sold works to corporate and private collectors both here and abroad. It was during this early period that she created her first award-winning work. In 1992, Sheila and her family moved to Germany, where she first began painting outdoors, from real life, in the little village where she lived, Hutschenhausen. Sheila joined a professional painting artists tour through France. Included among the en-plein-air stops was a day of painting in Monet's Giverny gardens. She credits this experience for triggering a “quantum leap in my creative development.” “I began to focus on a more abstracted style of landscape, becoming less interested in painting specific details, and much more interested in the thousands of subtle shades of warm and cool colors from nature,” Sheila recalls. As she developed her new style, she would seek out books on art and artists. “When I first saw the work of the color field artist Marc Rothko, I was intrigued by the manner in which my eyes perceived colors as my gaze followed the edges of the large blocks of color in each painting... how my perception of the hues changed. For example, an outer color that is purple could make an interior area of yellow ochre look green instead of yellow... a muted brown next to a pure swatch of ultramarine blue made the blue look so much brighter... This was the beginning of my intense exploration of the use of color and pattern to create an emotional impression,” she recalls. “Another artist who has had a profound influence on my work is Wolf Kahn, for a similar reason, even though his landscapes are very different from Rothko's abstracts.” While in Europe, Finch had exhibits in Paris, and Germany. Moving to Northern California has again taken her work to a new level. “California is so visually stimulating, I cannot paint my emotional responses quickly enough to capture them all. I remember my first trip into the Sierras and not being able to breath. It wasn't the altitude,” she laughs, “we weren't that far above sea level yet!” Through her use of color, Sheila strives to recreate strong, emotional impacts on the viewer. “I find I am drawn to images of landscapes that boarder on the abstract, and to abstracts which have a somewhat organic, defined nature,” she explains. Sheila has been featured multiple times by Gold River Scene Magazine and recognized by the National Arts Appreciation Program and Le Bateau Lavoir in Paris. Big Art and Son were so easy to work with and quickly resolved my trailer hitch jack issue.

Big Art & Son saved the day when I was in a complete mess. I knew that when I made the call that I was not only receiving a professional service I was being treated more like family than a customer. Big Art and his son saved the day for us. We had our 22' boat on a tandem axle trailer when a hub fractured and ate up the bearings on one wheel. We limped home on 3 wheels but needed a new hub and bearings before we could get the boat back to the harbor and in its slip. Fast, reliable and reasonable price for coming all the way to Aptos.

Words can't really describe my gratitude for Art and his son and what they do for their clients, all done at your driveway. I have a 98 Malibu direct drive that had been sitting for 10 years, begging to be resurrected from death. Art and his son put the trailer back together with all the latest gear for a perfect trailering experience, i.e. a disc brake conversion and updated acctuator. When I mean resurrection, I mean like literally. And on Easter Sunday to make it more fitting. Art got the boat started and running strong again, and making sure the steering and Prop shaft was up to snuff. On top of good service, he gives good advice on what to do to keep your boat alive and well. Look no further if you want next level service and boat support.

A review that is way over due . I called Art about 2 years ago to add brakes and new bearing buddies to my boat trailer . He fitted me into his work schedule and did an amazing job . New rotors , calipers , brakes , bearing buddies and actuator . 2 years later I took my trailer to a local tire shop to replace my tires. Tire shop stripped out 4 out of 5 wheel studs . Tire shop had nothing but excuses so they wouldn't have to fix it . Leaving for a family vacation few days after that mess at tire shop , I didn't know where else to go , so I called Art and he was here the next day . Took the old studs out that were stripped and replaced the rotor itself with new studs . This will be your trailer guy for life . Very responsive and dependable . As long as I have my boat , Art will be my trailer maintenance person yearly . Thank you Art

Art hooked me up big time and helped me out on short notice to do a boat service. I contacted him and he was prompt and was able to pencil me in just a few days later. I was in a different state so it was great that he was able to send photos, videos, and messages as he was going through my boat with any updates. He also gave me tips for our upcoming season in the boat to keep it tip top. Thanks Big Art & Sons. We will be back!!

Art has provided service for my boat and trailer for a number of years. He is easy to schedule, dependable, and very knowledgeable. Also, it is so very refreshing to find an HONEST mechanic! And Art is great! When he encountered a very difficult problem that took longer than expected, he did not charge me extra - he just kept at it until it was solved. I tried to pay him a little additional for the hours he worked, but he would not accept it. Also, he provides ongoing on going on the proper use and storage of my boat.

Excellent and quick communication. Was able to figure out details of the service needs and trusted their recommendations for our pontoon and trailer. Pricing was fair and the ability to have them come out the your home is amazing. I have already recommended them to my brother and he plans to use them as well. Highly recommended!

I was on my way home after a successful fishing day when my bearing decided to take a dump. I was stuck and didn't know how to fix the trailer. I gave Art a call and he was able to figure out the issue and come out a few hours later to fix it. That's what I call service! Thanks Art for saving my day!

Alejandra Alonso Rojas knows a thing or two—or, well, a hundred—about Menorca . The designer, whose family owns a home near the town of Binibeca, has been traveling to the Spanish island for over 30 years. “Choosing Menorca is always an easy decision; its serene beaches, rich cultural heritage, and vibrant art scene are simply irresistible,” she tells Vogue. “Every visit feels like a homecoming, as the island’s familiar landscapes and warm atmosphere make me feel a sense of comfort and belonging. This time in Menorca is the ultimate luxury for me—an opportunity to slow down, reconnect with loved ones, and truly be present.”

In the mornings, she usually wanders to the nearby farmer’s market to buy fresh produce to cook for both breakfast and late lunches on a boat. “Some of my must-haves are gazpacho, fresh salad, stuffed eggplants, Spanish omelette, and sobrasada with honey—and fresh fruit for dessert, of course,” she says. “Sa Llotja is where I find the freshest fish and seafood, caught and sold on the same day and I go to Pascaderia de San Luis for its exquisite red shrimp, a local delicacy. The local market Mercat Sa Plaça is a vibrant hub for fresh produce, meats, and artisanal goods. In the south of the island at San Luis, there is Sa Botiga de S’Uestra , for local products and an excellent butcher.” Then, Rojas will spend her days swimming or checking out one of the many art galleries on the island—often Hauser & Wirth, with its gardens by Piet Oudolf.

Last year, we needed to stay in a hotel for a few days, and we chose Menorca Experimental. We couldn’t have been happier with our choice. (It’s funny because back in New York, La Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels on Centre Street— which is on our street—is from the same owners! What a coincidence.) The hotel itself is incredible, and beautifully decorated with inspiration drawn from the island’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. The food was exceptional, and the spa and wellness program were top-notch. My favorite part was the yoga platform overlooking the sea and the swimming pool—such a serene and rejuvenating experience. We had a wonderful stay there, and it was the perfect complement to our usual time at our family home.

For lunch and dinner, En Caragol in Biniancolla is a standout. Javier Riaño offers an incredible variety of fresh Mediterranean food that keeps you coming back. The specials of the day are always a delight, but my absolute favorites include the Menorcan red shrimp carpaccio, sea bass sashimi, and fat belly tuna. And, of course, the Carabineros Paella is a must-try. The views and location make the experience even more memorable.

Another gem is El Faro in Cala Torret, which has my favorite mussels in the whole world, lobster with onions, and traditional Menorcan recipe fish dishes. Their Mahon cheese ice cream is a unique and delightful dessert that you have to try.

For a more casual beachside lunch, Bar Restaurant Es Canutells in Es Canutells is perfect. Their clams, boquerones, paella, and grilled fish are all exceptional as well as the steak with pepper sauce.

Cap Roig in Sa Mesquida is ideal for lunch, especially if you’re a fan of local fish—Cap Roig is their specialty, and it’s as fresh as it gets.

For a farm-to-table experience, Son Blanc offers a dining experience that celebrates Menorcan produce. It’s a beautiful way to connect with the island’s culinary heritage. It is a tasting menu.

Sa Pedrera Des Pujol in San Luis provides a refined dining experience with a focus on local ingredients, perfect for those looking for something a bit more upscale.

A perennial favorite, this gallery is located on an island that used to be a hospital. The transformation into an art space is remarkable, and this summer’s exhibitions on the work of Eduardo Chillida are a testament to the island’s creative spirit. I was especially surprised to learn that Chillida spent a lot of time in Menorca and that the island heavily influenced his work. A fun and unexpected discovery was that Chillida used to visit the Talayots—unusual megalithic constructions scattered throughout the island—during the full moon because it’s believed to have special energy. Coincidentally, I’ve been doing the same since my childhood, and now I continue the tradition with my own child, gathering energy for the rest of the year.

A Mediterranean artist whose work has been a personal inspiration. His technique, especially in portraying fish, left a lasting impression on me as a child and continues to influence my creative process.
