5 Questions When Hiring a Yacht Electro-Technical Officer (ETO)

Darren portrait with NAS3000 profile2

We'’ve talked in recent blog posts about the exponential growth in computer-based systems on board yachts. These days, everything from yacht management, VSAT, A/V and telephony is computerized, often using an integrated system.

It used to be that computer-related tasks simply fell to the individual on board with the best computer skills. This could be a second engineer, stew or even a chef.

But as yacht technology has become more complex and ubiquitous, additional time, effort, and knowledge is needed to maintain on board technology. In order to help manage multiple electronic and computer-based systems, many larger vessels are adding the position of Electro-Technical Officer or Electronics Technical Officer (ETO) to their crew.

Selecting a Yacht ETO

Including these interview questions -and paying attention to the answers- might make the difference between hiring a self-taught computer geek with a few brief classes under his or her belt and someone with the technical chops to provide vital systems maintenance, repair, operation and upgrade assistance.

Along with radio, radar, electrical maintenance and engine room watch keeping, today’s ETO needs fundamental knowledge of computer systems architecture. To that end, we’ve come up with 5 computer technology-related questions to ask when interviewing ETO candidates.

5 Questions to Consider

1. What are the candidate'’s technical skills? Does the individual have some amount of formal education in computer technology, including systems architecture? Demonstrated knowledge of the network infrastructure required to support integrated systems makes it more likely that the candidate will understand how to efficiently manage those systems.

It also makes it more likely that when systems are added as yacht technology advances, the ETO will able to coordinate and maintain the evolving system as a whole.   The ETO must also be able to anticipate how alterations to one system might affect other systems and plan for these changes. 2. Does the individual possess good problem-solving and trouble-shooting skills? Technical systems on a yacht can be complex. When things aren't working as expected, you need someone with strong problem-solving skills to isolate the problem and devise a viable solution.  A methodical, linear approach works best.  To a large degree these skills can be taught, but they also require some degree of inate critical thinking ability.

To test a candidate's problem-solving skills, you might consider laying out a specific scenario in the interview and ask the candidate how he or she would go about trouble-shooting the problem.

A basic example of a common scenario might be something like: "All systems were working properly when the vessel experienced an unplanned power outage. When everything came back online the computer network appeared to be working properly, but no computers were able to access the Internet.  How would you go about trouble-shooting the problem?"

3. Does the candidate have the skills required to develop procedures and provide crew training? As more technical systems are added to your vessel, someone needs to teach crew how to use them. If your ETO will be training crew in your yacht’s AV, VoIP telephony, etc., the individual must be able to explain concepts, answer questions thoroughly, and check for understanding.

Good verbal and writing skills are essential to convey this information. The candidate must also understand that teaching and instruction are ongoing activities as the vessel adds new systems and crew.

4. Is the candidate curious about and interested in the latest yacht technology developments? Since on board technology is changing so quickly, you need an ETO who is interested in the latest updates in the field. Maybe you don’t want to hire a complete computer geek, but at least find someone who keeps him or herself informed regarding the latest in yacht technology and is interested in sharing that knowledge with you.

5. Does the candidate possess the communication and organization skills necessary to work well with technical experts and vendors? The ETO not only needs to communicate with crew, but with vendors and service providers involved with the yacht’s systems. He or she needs a sufficient technical background to understand each system on board so any problems can be reported to the appropriate vendor in a productive manner. The candidate must also be organized enough to coordinate planned maintenance on systems with shore-side technicians.

If the candidate can communicate ideas succinctly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, he or she will be able to maintain a good relationship with vendors and work with them efficiently to maintain systems and solve any problems that arise.

Do your Due Diligence

Don't rely solely on your gut feeling to determine whether to hire someone as your ETO. Ask candidates for work and school references and follow up on them. Call references to inquire about candidates' communication and inter-personal affectiveness, as well as computer knowledge and skills.

Ask to see transcripts including technical courses related to the job. Be wary of individuals who are "self-taught" or who lack any formal training.

If you need a little help evaluating interviewees' qualifications, consider checking with your yacht systems expert. Ask the IT company you currently work with to  vet your ETO candidates.

Great Circle Systems is often asked to check the qualifications of ETOs, including their computer knowledge and yacht system maintenance potential. Feel free to contact us if you need help in this area.

Career of Electro Technical Officer on Ship

Having chosen a marine career (good choice!) as your field of work, here is some information to help make your search wider. You are determined to find a job at sea then we offer you a suitable option for that- an electro technical officer.

An electro technical officer is one of the most important people on a vessel, especially when it comes to his/her expertise of handling electrical equipment of the vessel.

For those who are interested in maritime jobs , a ship officer handling the electrical supervision of the vessel can be a suitable career choice. As an electro technical officer, your main duty would be to ensure functioning and maintenance of electrical equipments on vessel.

Electro Technical Officer

What does an electro technical officer do?

An electro technical officer handles several responsibilities on vessel mainly related to electrical systems. Like most jobs at sea, as a ship officer handling electronics on a vessel, you are most likely to work under a chief engineer who supervises everything on a ship. And while under a chief engineer, your ship jobs would include the following things.

  • Maintenance and working of electrical equipments on board
  • Working of electrical parts like engine rooms, radio communications, electronic navigation needs like echo sounders, Gyro compass, Weather Fax, auto pilot, RADAR system , Broadcast and internal aerial system, telephone and talk back system and satellite communications
  • Look into basic electric needs like refrigeration , bridge systems and control rooms
  • Maintenance of emergency systems including emergency switches, fire alarms and detectors
  • Vessel’s electrical components like navigational lights , battery backups and electrically operated propelling machinery
  • Assist chief officer in handling routine works especially related to electrical handling
  • Coordinate work with on shore technicians
  • During emergencies, an electrical officer plays important role like every other ship officer. You would be required to handle the emergency situations and ensure all the equipment needed for safety is always ready
  • An electro technical officer looks into electrical and technical aspects on a vessel. Hence working of computer controlled machinery would be supervised by an ETO.
  • An electrical officer is immensely important on cruise ships and passenger vessels which have huge electrical requirements and unmanned technology handling them. Everything from refrigeration to air conditioning on such vessels would come under your supervision as an electro technical officer.

What are the knowledge and skills needed to be an ETO?

An ETO can be seen as a higher version of anelectrical officer. The qualifications and qualities needed to become an ETO are

  • A foundation degree in electrical/engineering/electrical engineering/marine engineering  field
  • An electrical engineering degree- a minimum Bachelor’s level qualification
  • Electro technical training like STCW 95 basic safety training course including fire fighting, fire prevention, elementary first aid course training
  • ENG1’ seafarer’s medical certificate and/or certification for physical and mental fitness
  • Training for handling electrical, navigational and communication equipment
  • A course in Electro Technical engineering (optional but not necessary but may come as an added advantage)
  • As Per New STCW-2010 Manila amendments, Elector technical officer has to obtain certificate of competency from Maritime Authorities  by applying for exams conducted by them.

Besides a simple Bachelor’s degree in engineering, as an aspirant of an ETO post, you can also take up additional short term diploma courses of full Bachelor’s courses dealing with electro technical handling and maintenance. Besides these qualifications, for a person seeking careers at sea, you must possess following qualities too.

  • Physical strength to handle heavy duty on board work
  • Mental fitness
  • Ability to stay away from family for long intervals
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Ability to handle practical situations
  • Independent decision making capacity
  • Task prioritization and organization
  • Ability to keep calm and not panic under emergency situations
  • To be able to work under a senior while maintaining a team of your own
  • Flair for circuits and wires ( a must)

What is tentative remuneration?

Like most jobs at sea, the salary of an ETO greatly varies with the experience you own, the kind of responsibilities you handle and the rank that you work on. However, even with so many variables, ETO remains a highly paying job among all careers at sea. As an ETO, you can expect a salary of $3000 to $5400 per month. Those working on bigger cruise ships can expect even up to $10000 per month depending on the size of the cruise ship and the duties handled.

The biggest advantage with this particular option among all maritime jobs is that it is a new field. Since electrical aspect and IT on vessels has combined on recently, not many people have been duly trained to handle them both together. With increasing need for such people, there are immense opportunities for people to make use of their knowledge and skills. Work handled by an electrical officer now needs expertise of an ETO now. Considering that, it seems viable that this option among all marine careers should be seen as a highly lucrative choice by most mariners.

@ Martin: Yes. This post does not have any promotion aspects but there will be salary rise as per the industry standards but not like engineers or deck officers who will be getting salary as per their promotion.

Electrical Officer is most degraded Job on Merchant Vessel .He undertakes job may be slightly less than an oiler.Full career he is doing operational level unlike the other engineer who barely know Electrical /Electronic sits on top as Chief Engineer .The present Manila amendments dosen’ do anything good for the Electrical officer .The designation changed and more lengthy process to get struck in that job .So I would say that Electrical Officer /ETO doesn’t offer a career progression. So aspiring person who like to join Merchant navy look for a Mariner Engineer ladder and not Electrical ladder .

i am b.tech ec final year student can i join eto but i uses specticals 1.5d.

I am b.tech in electrical (EEE) decipline student in final year can i join ETO in superior progression level

Sir may i joine E.T.O ,iam B.Tech Electronics communication Engineering please explaine about ability and qualification

ETO are the best when it comes to electrical troubleshooting and prevention of damages. Unlikely chief engineers hiding problems until someone get injured or the damage is too big to be handled simply because they don’t want to show their weakness in competence and do not understand in full the electrical theory. ETO should take major decisions onboard on the electrical side in agreement with chief engineer and not being subordinate, that’s why he is onboard. It will be always too late until IMO recognize that ETO carrier is no different from the engineers career because the have the same technical background and study and spend the same time at sea!!!!!

do not take ETO route: they pay you next to nothing, expect you to troubleshoot every system that is moved by signals/sdensors/electrons ….on board with no help whatsoever. You are left alone.

and then dump you like a garbage when the technology progresses and they will double the systems like on an aircraft to cut costs on wages.

believe me, shipping industry is very very short sighted, and least considerate to the human being

exemple of technological redundancy is th on board Radio Officers. Those technicians were very qualified in electronics, and the industry did not manage to retrain by simply update a little with the high voltage electrical systems/generators in the engine room and some CPU controllers update.

I am current ETO officer that knows what he is talking about.

Good luck and choose a shore based industry.

My Dream Is to joint merchant nevy, But As i am ECE Engineer so i have only option Is Electro Technical Officer (ETO).

Dear Career makers !!!

today’s date much more job shortage and cadets are comes in this merchant navy line, special ETO,GME Batches, don’t joint merchant navy career. The Bachelor & post graduated holders are comes to here with much more career hopes & they are also invested lots of money in this line, sometimes for middle class family that much of money is not affordable, but due to fake agents easily traps to aspirants/students regards job prospectus & unnecessarily agents also takes money from it. also agents are gives much more sailing waiting period for that cadet, those gay’s whose expended total money & age of career.

HI, can I join cruise ships after completing ETO course and not container ships… I finished my EEE in engineering. Also which is the best collg in South India to join ETO course? What is the career scope after 3years in this field?

Helo sir iam working as a assistant refrigeration engineer in cruise ship i have 9 years in this field is that possible to to do eto caurce i did air conditioning and refrigeration diploma caurce

@Chiranjeevi: Cruise ship companies will only take experienced ETOs. It will be difficult to get into a cruise shipping company. You will be joining as a trainee ETO and post 3 years you will be working as Sr. ETO.

In case of eto will they get the salary promotion according to their experience

Can an eto become chief engineer

@Nidheesh: No, he/she cannot. However, an ETO can shift to engine department by applying for Class IV exams to become a 4th engineer. After that, you can proceed on a career of a marine engineer to become chief engineer.

You will be joining as Trainee ETO and after a certain experience, you will be promoted to ETO. ETO is the only and the highest position on the ship for an electrical officer.

I’m from the field of Instrumentation and control engineering. Is it possible for me to undertake ETO course?

@Kavin: Yes, You can.

May cousin is a license electrical engineer on the vessel. It is posible he is apply for to be a captain of the ship? Even he ddnt study a marine transportion course but he has working as a ETO. In merchant vessel. Thnx in advance if ever you ever you answering my question

Is doing ETO course a good option for a long term ?

@Manoj: entirely depend on your career interest. even if you become successful ETO, but do not enjoy the job, I will not consider it as a long term option. Practically, the job market is yet to improve for a new joiner (be it engineer, deck officer or electrical engineer)

@Louis: No, he cannot.

Which institute is better for eto according to you ? which give 100% placement after complextion? Eligibility creteria of eto?

Sir, I have 2 years job experience in DG systems …will it help me to get high pay job if I go for merchant Navy course now?

@Saurabh: You need to have a CDC to get a job on the ship. Also, you need to fulfill the age criteria too. Looking at the job market, it is very difficult for a fresh marine engineer or deck officer to get job on ship.

I want to join Trainee ETO AT cruise ship. Is it a better option than Cargo ship . What are the salary of ETO on cruise.

Sir I got 67% in 12 but in PCM only 48 % and completed b.tech in electronics instrumentation with 65 % so I am eligible or not. And in maths 33% in 12th.

@Athrav: If you want to pursue an ETO career, you can enter with your b.tech degree.

@Ahamad Khan: It will be extremely difficult to get a trainee job on a cruise ship. You need to complete your training in a cargo ship. For entry-level, there ain’t any difference.

Hello, I’m still a student taking Bs Electrical Engineering. I found this ETO career very interesting. Is it possible for a fresh grad student to be an ETO? or do I still need an onboard experience first?

@Ajay: The seafaring industry is going through a hard time in terms of jobs and freshers are most hard hit by it. The wise option would be to find an alternative job for the time being and continue searching for the ETO jobs side by side.

Yey: You need an onboard experience as Trainee ETO along with Certificate of Competency for ETO.

Sir, i hv completed diploma in mechatronics .. am i eligible for ETO Course

@Navin: Yes, you are.

Sir which is good eto college other than AEMA, TMI, anad GEIMS?

@Anubhav: That institute which is giving sponsorship for the training.

Sir, I completed my b.tech in EEE and have an experience of 3 years in my field. Now i wanted to switch so i thought of joinining eto course. will it be helpful? Am i going to get any benefit of my experience? Or getting a sponsorship will make any difference?

@Sandeep”” You are eligible to join the ETO course. Your experience will help you understand the field. Sponsorship is important looking at the current job scenario as freshers are not getting jobs and they are kept in waiting for more than a year to get the ship experience.

Sir, i have completed my 12th with 50% and diploma in electronic and telecomm with 75% and BE in electronic and telecomm( with a gap year with 55 % am i eligible for the ETO course ? And if yes what are the job prospect after completing the course ?

@Nassie: You also need to do basic STCW training courses. You can join any type of ship which needs ETO on ships.

Hai sir i completed my diploma in electronics and communication engineering i eligible for eto course ?

@Arjun: Yes, you are eligible.

Most Filipino Electro Technical Officers are actually Electrical Engineers and Electronic Communication Engineers But before we can get certified as Electro Technical Officer at MARITIME INDUSTRY AUTHORITY here in Philippines, They require a lot of training’s for ETO. WAKE UP ALL ETO, We are educated during our college degrees, we studied Bachelor of Science in Engineering, we studied a lot from Electrical Engineering but these does not credit on our Marine Profession. And what sucks most even English course are included for the very expensive training’s , why won’t they evaluate and compare ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING CURRICULUM to lessen the gap in marine electrical profession. We already studied controls and instrumentation, motor design, electrical designs, programmable logic control and etc. We studied Electrical Engineering for Five years and our diploma and License as Engineers must be credited on board.

sir which good carer between eto and g.m.e or fourth engneer

Sir I have completed 4 months eto training from BP MARINE Belapur Any vacancies for Trainee ETO??

@Swarajkumar: We are not into job palcement or assistance.

I’m a building electrician for 3years…and I’m interested to be an ETO.. can I take it?

If you have a degree or diploma, than you can pursue ETO course.

sir i’ve a degree in electrical and electronics eng. what should i do next if i have to pursue this career

You need to take courses for STCW certification. Few institute provides training to get the required qualification.

Sir, I have C&G levels 1,2 &3 respectively in Electrical Engineering.

Can put in for ETO.?

I have done my B. Tech in 2012 and my age is 30 Can I join marchant navy as eto

The Age limit for the ETO course is-35 years…Yes you can.

Yacht crew positions : Hierarchy, Missions & Salaries explained

eto job on yacht

Like any well-run hotel, restaurant, or other luxury service, a crewed yacht needs organized structure and good management. Whether you’re staffing your own luxury vessel or looking for an exciting career working and traveling the world, you need to know how this structure works, and what you can expect to pay or earn and do in the various roles on board.

Every yacht is a little different, and organization may reflect the style of the captain or the demands of the owner. But the same jobs need to be done on almost every boat. Organized with ranks, heads of each division report to the Captain. It’s not a military-style organization, but there are parallels with merchant marine grades and structures.

Smaller yachts need fewer crew, and staff may wear multiple hats that cross more traditional divisions and may combine some jobs with others. Large yachts have more distinct divisions or subdivisions, with more specialization to divide tasks and manage staffing. The core skills are the same, but finding staff with the right blends to do the jobs is key. Crew with broader skills are highly sought after.

As a yacht owner, you shouldn’t have to worry about day-to-day management decisions or organizing all this. That’s why you have a captain, and it’s better to leave staffing decisions entirely up to him or her. But it’s still important to know what it is people you’re hiring do, why they’re there, and how many you need. You don’t want too many crew, or to be short-handed. An understanding of what your yacht needs helps you talk to the captain to keep your yacht running how you want it.

For those looking to break into yacht crew work, consider your skills and strengths, and what jobs appeal to you. You’ll need training before you work, and you can direct your job path through the training you seek. Your goal is a suitable position on a well-run yacht, so make yourself the most attractive candidate possible.

Yacht Work Life

eto job on yacht

Working on a yacht is also living on the yacht. Crew must have a space to sleep, food, and all the basics that any employee needs. Large yachts have space reserved for crew, and owners looking for quality crew should provide good working and living conditions. Your crew takes care of you, and you should take care of them.

Depending on where a yacht operates or what flag she flies, a variety of labor laws or rules may be in effect. These requirements may be for work visas, contracts and written agreements, and compliance with merchant and ship crew treaties and laws. Be prepared to have work and non-disclosure agreements between yacht and crew, though a few yachts skip this.

Seasonal Jobs

Many yacht positions are seasonal. Year-round employment is more likely for senior crew like the captain and department heads, but not all yachts see year-round use. And some yachts may use different crew in different locales between seasonal moves.

Any job listing should give seasonal information, with geographic information, the length of the season, and the prospects for year-round positions and repeat employment.

Hours, Salaries, and Expectations

Yacht crew is a service job at its core, and every yacht owner is looking for service-oriented people who understand how to deliver a hotel-quality living and restaurant-quality fine dining. Work experience in luxury hotels and restaurants is a big plus for some jobs, and makes breaking into yacht work easier.

Yacht work can be very demanding, with periods of intense work when the owner and guests or a charter party is on board. Long days aren’t uncommon, but often balance with slack time when the boat is empty of passengers. There is always work to be done, but there’s usually a chance for time off.

Most salaries are monthly, since many positions are seasonal. Pay ranges are commensurate with experience, rank, and responsibility. Private vessels usually offer higher base pay, as charter crew can earn tips on top of their base salary. Because of the demands of the lifestyle, compensation is good and you have minimal living expenses on board.

Benefits and Time Off

Because so many jobs are seasonal and may occur in different countries and locations, benefits offered to yacht crew vary widely. But it is not uncommon for crew to be offered health and accident insurance and a flight to the vessel. Living on board, you’ll get food, rooming (usually shared), basic toiletries, uniforms, and laundry. Yachts with a longer view may offer additional training to long-term prospects.

Time off is usually linked to boat use, and may be sporadic in-season or when the boat has the owner and guests on board. There will always be some time off, but it may be between very intense work periods.

Most crew jobs have an employment contract that meets the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC). This should spell out the contract period and duration, as well as salary, leave and time off, probationary periods, repatriation policies, and any other crucial details to meet the minimum international standards of crew welfare.

This contract should also contain shipboard policies on confidentiality and non-disclosures, drug and alcohol use on board, personal hygiene expectations, interpersonal relationships, and dispute resolution. Job expectations and requirements can also be included, with specific language about roles, tasks, and cooperation between divisions.

Note that all crew agreements will explicitly prohibit drug use on board, most limit alcohol consumption and ban hard liquor on board, and many boats have policies prohibiting intimate personal crew relationships. Because the crew is living on board full time and in close quarters, rules to maintain decorum and crew harmony may be in writing.

Training & Certificates

Two key certifications are required for yacht crew. Employers look for the STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watch-keeping for Seafarers) and the ENG1 (Seafarer Medical Certificate). Insurers generally require crew to have these two certifications or the equivalent.

The ENG1 isn’t a class. It’s a medical exam to ensure that the crew is physically fit to serve at sea and has no underlying conditions that may arise far from help. It’s best for prospective crew to secure the ENG1 before investing more time and money training.

STCW is a week-long class on the basics of onboard safety. This includes hands-on modules covering personal survival, fire safety, first aid and CPR, accident prevention, and security awareness. It needs to be refreshed every five years.

Shared, Hybrid, and Crossover Jobs

Larger vessels will have more defined duties and specific areas of responsibility. But smaller yachts may want the crew to have different roles in different situations. For example, a hybrid job description may read “3rd Engineer/Steward” and describe a role in engineering when the boat is empty but on inside crew when passengers are on board.

When hiring or seeking jobs be prepared to look for creative crossover skill sets to meet the needs of the vessel.

Extra Skills and Duties

Any extra skills outside the regular duties makes crew more attractive. From stewards who can teach yoga, give massages or play cocktail piano to deck crew who know how to water ski, SCUBA dive, or fish, anything that crew can bring to enhance the passenger experience adds value to the employee.

If you’re looking for a position, list the skills you’d be comfortable using. If a vessel owner is looking for something specific, spell it out and figure out how that special duty fits into the employee work day.

The Four Main Divisions

eto job on yacht

Most yacht crews break into four primary divisions which group related tasks and responsibilities together. While the grouping sounds like it’s by section of the boat, they’re really more functional. For example, stewards (Interior) will definitely serve meals, whether they’re in the main dining room or out on deck. Deckhands (deck) are going to be involved in painting, sanding, and varnish jobs anywhere on the boat.

The deck crew handles most of the exterior operations of the yacht, and runs it. Deck hands and crew keep the boat looking clean and shiny, and handling most vessel operations. This includes driving and operating the yacht, navigation, running all launches and ship’s craft, handling lines, and all maintenance and painting, washing, and shining.

2-Interior (or Inside)

Inside crew are primarily the stewards and housekeepers. Larger vessels will have a dedicated housekeeping staff separate from the stewards, but smaller vessels may not.

Stewards keep the interior clean, do all housekeeping, laundry, food and beverage service, cabin preparation, and anything else needed for the comfort of the passengers.

3-Engineering

Below decks, the engineering department ensures the safe and smooth running of all the ship’s machinery and electronics. Engineers are engine and systems specialists, and there will usually be a dedicated electronics expert. Most engineer jobs require professional training and certification.

Fine dining is a hallmark of the yachting experience, and a full-time galley crew prepares all meals for passengers and crew. The head chef plans the menus and provisions the boat, while junior chefs assist the head chef with meal preparation and keeping the galley spotless.

Yacht Job and Department Details

eto job on yacht

Departments are all organized in a hierarchy, with a department head reporting to the Captain. The clear chain of command makes for smooth operations, with all communications going up and down ranks. Junior staff will occasionally take instructions from other divisions as all crew is expected to help as needed. A captain or department head may organize staff differently, so reporting structures listed are guidelines only.

All salary ranges are monthly figures and are ranges based on yacht size and crew experience. Senior jobs on larger yachts have more responsibility than the same job title on yachts with smaller crews. Experienced crew are very desirable and can expect more pay for their positions.

Listed responsibilities are not exhaustive, and different yachts may allocate some jobs to different positions.

The Captain

eto job on yacht

The captain of the vessel is the overall decision maker for the yacht in all situations, including the safety of the vessel. The owner should leave the Captain responsible for operational decisions about hiring and staff and operating the ship. To become a captain requires years of experience and training, and a broad set of skills including yacht operations, personnel management, budgeting and finance. The captain works directly with the owner and owner’s representative, if the captain is not also acting as the representative.

On an organization chart, the Captain is usually placed in the deck division, but the Captain is always the senior-most crew on the yacht and all division heads report to the Captain.

Responsibilities include:

  • Responsible for all navigation and running the yacht.
  • Senior decision maker on all crew hiring.
  • Manage repairs, refits, and yard work.
  • Manage budgets and accounting. On larger yachts, this task ends more on the Purser, but the captain is always responsible.
  • Ensure all paperwork, clearances, and legal requirements are completed.
  • Primary contact with the owner or charter parties.

Reports to: The yacht owner

Salary Range: $6,000 to $22,000

The deckhands handle all the outside responsibilities of the ship, including cleaning and maintenance of the yacht and all the ship’s vessels and toys on board. Deck crew will have significant contact with passengers in this role, operating launches and delivering guests to and from shore and handling the toys.

All deck crew have watch responsibilities on passage, and daily responsibilities keeping the yacht pristine and clean. They will also do line handling and secure the yacht.

Deck department : Chief Mate/First Officer

The Chief Mate or First Officer is the second in command of the vessel, and left in charge when the Captain is not on board. The first mate has the requisite skills to stand in for the captain and run the yacht if needed and usually acts as the division head of the deck team.

The seamanship skills needed are similar to the Captain’s position.

  • Primary safety officer for the yacht and all passengers and crew.
  • Supervise and manage all operations on deck.
  • Bridge watches on passage.
  • Passage planning and navigation.

There may be additional mates on larger vessels, these 2nd, 3rd, etc. mates have similar responsibilities on rotation. But the first mate is senior and always second in command.

Reports to: Captain

Salary Range: $4,000 to $9,500 (First mate)

Second and more junior mates may earn $2,000 to $4,000

Deck department : Bosun

eto job on yacht

The Bosun is the senior deckhand and manages the junior hands on board. This will usually be the most experienced hand on board.

  • Organizing all operations on deck.
  • Coordinating the use, storing and launching of the ship’s boats, toys, and equipment.
  • Managing the passerelle, watching passenger safety.
  • Contact point for guest service on boats, toys, and trips to shore.

Reports to: First mate

Salary Range: $3,000 to $5,000

Deck department : Deckhands

eto job on yacht

Deckhands are constantly busy with maintenance, cleaning, polishing, and assisting guests as needed. They will assist other departments as needed or given special duties.

  • Daily cleaning of the yacht’s exterior.
  • Painting, varnishing, polishing.
  • Line handling.
  • Launching and operating dinghies and tenders.
  • Repairs and carpentry.
  • Helping guests as needed – everything from handling baggage and gear to embarking and disembarking.

Reports to: Bosun

Salary range: $1,300 to $3,000

Though every position on a yacht is service-oriented, the interior or inside crew provides the primary customer service. They will interact the most with the passengers daily, and they’re directly responsible for the quality of their experience on board.

Interior department : the Purser

eto job on yacht

The purser is the chief financial officer of the yacht and handles all the financial operations on board. Accounting, purchasing, payroll and hiring, and all money matters end up with the Purser. This is a senior staff position, and may be the interior department head. Smaller yachts may eliminate the purser’s job and add it to the captain’s and other senior staff duties.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Accounting and bookkeeping for all financial transactions.
  • Human resources and payroll.
  • Handling logistics for all departments related to purchasing.
  • Managing contracts.
  • Event coordination, including off yacht bookings and payments.
  • Primary administration of the boat’s business paperwork.
  • Inventory and supply management.

Salary Range: $4,000 to $8,000

Interior department : The Chief Steward/ess

eto job on yacht

The chief steward or stewardess has primary responsibility for all service roles inside. Food and drink service, cabin preparation, and anything to do with helping the passengers be more comfortable and enjoy their stay. The chief steward will be inside crew with several years of experience.

The chief steward manages the interior staff, setting and enforcing vessel service standards. The chief steward ensures the crew delivers a five-star hospitality experience.

Chief Steward Responsibilities:

  • Scheduling and training junior crew for meal and drink service and cabin preparation.
  • Primary contact with guests for meals and drinks.
  • Sommelier and wine service.
  • Coordinate with the galley for meals and presentation.
  • Decorate the interior, from flower arrangement to table settings.
  • Arrange onshore activities and outings.

Reports to: Captain or Purser, depending on the yacht

Salary Range: $4,000 to $8,500

Stewards/Stewardesses

The stewards and stewardesses are the primary guest service staff. They will work closely with guests and passengers, and have daily contact with them as they meet most of their needs while on board.

Steward Responsibilities:

  • Food and drink service.
  • Room preparation and turndown service.
  • Cleaning, polishing, housekeeping, and inside maintenance.
  • Cabin detailing.
  • Laundry, pressing, and folding.
  • Help with outings, trips, debarkations.

Reports to: Chief Steward

Salary Range: $1,500 to $4,500

Housekeeping

eto job on yacht

Larger yachts may have a dedicated housekeeping and laundry staff. This will be part of the inside crew, under either the purser or the head steward. There may be a senior housekeeper, if there are more than one housekeeping crew on board.

Responsibilities are the cleaning and laundry portions of the steward’s job, and a laundry steward may spend most of her time inside the ship’s laundry.

An experienced Head of Housekeeping may earn from $4,500 to $7,000, while a Laundry Steward typically earns from $2,500 to $3,500.

Food service requirements on any yacht are high. Whether it’s a privately owned vessel or a charter, the expectations are always for top tier food service, with a variety of meals planned for the requirements of every passenger. Chefs and cooks prepare all meals on board for passengers and crew, but sometimes other interior crew may help with prep work or cleanup.

Smaller yachts have smaller galley crews, but the largest vessels may have an executive chef and several sous chefs. All chef positions require formal culinary training and experience, but cook positions are often entry level. Promotion from cook to chef is unusual without additional training.

Galley department : the Head / Executive Chef

eto job on yacht

On larger yachts, an Executive Chef will run the entire galley with the help of sous chefs and cooks. With an Executive Chef, there’s an expectation that the food and menus will be on a level with Michelin star-rated restaurants.

The executive chef brings a thorough understanding of food preparation and presentation, and moves food preparation past creative up to artistic. Job responsibilities are similar to a chef, but the job demands and the required experience and education are much higher.

Salary range: $7,000 to $11,000

eto job on yacht

The chef has overall responsibility for all meals on the yacht, from provisioning in remote places to hygiene and good safety. If there’s only one chef, she’s the head of the galley crew. Finding the best provisions in far away locations and making the best of local food availability is a major part of the job.

  • Planning a delicious and varied menu for passengers.
  • Sourcing all food and arranging transport to the yacht.
  • Maintaining and operating within the galley budget.
  • Preparing passenger meals with professional presentation and style.
  • Cleaning and maintaining galley and galley equipment.
  • Deliver menus and meals on time, while running an organized and spotless galley.

Galley department : Sous Chef

The sous chefs assist the chef in all aspects of running the galley, and may have independent assignments to plan and guest and crew meals. While not primarily responsible for provisioning, the sous chef will help with food selection, menu preparation, and planning. A sous chef must have formal culinary training.

Reports to: Head chef

Salary Range: $3,500 – $6,000.

eto job on yacht

Galley department : The Cook

Cooks may be entry-level positions or experienced, but do not require formal gastronomy education. They will assist the chef and sous chefs, cooking meals and dishes for guests and crew, helping with provisioning, and keeping the galley neat.

  • Assist with provisioning and buying high-quality food from local sources.
  • Follow all food handling and safety guidelines.
  • Assist the head chef as needed, taking direction and guidance.
  • Prepare guest and crew meals as required.
  • Staying on top of galley inventories and supplies.

Salary Range: $2,500 to $3,500

Engineering

eto job on yacht

The engineering department keeps the yacht and all its systems working. Whether it’s the engines, electronics, air conditioning, or the plumbing – it’s up to engineering to keep it running.

There is considerable overlap with commercial shipping in the engineering field, as many of the same skills apply. And there is a broader range of qualifications and grades based on the size and power of the vessel. Job ratings may be set by required experience based on tonnage of ship or power of engines, with corresponding levels of pay and responsibility.

Unlike commercial shipping, engineers may get involved in other aspects of running the yacht, like helping with docking and water sports with mechanical toys.

Engineering certifications, training, ratings, experience and licensing are critical to hiring competent engineers, and for engineering crew it’s an important facet of career advancement. This is important for Chief and 2nd Engineers, which are often broken out by MCA (U.K. Maritime and Coastguard Agency) rating or other international equivalent.

MCA ratings for engineers Commercial and Private Yachts over 24m are:

Y4: Less than 200 Gross Tons and less than 1,500 kW engine power Y3: Less than 500 GT and 3,000 kW Y2: Less than 3,000 GT and 3,000 kW Y1: Less than 3,000 GT and 9,000 kW

There is also an unlimited rating for merchant vessels larger than the Y1 category. For discussing salary and responsibilities, we will include all ratings in one position description, but pay scales with the size of the yacht and any required higher ratings.

Chief Engineer

The chief engineer manages all aspects of keeping the yacht and its systems running. The chief engineer manages all the engineering staff, and directs all maintenance, repairs, troubleshooting and upgrades. This is a management position, but requires extensive hands-on technical experience and knowledge. Chief engineers on large yachts hold an MCA Y1 or Y2, smaller boats will have a lower rated chief and a smaller staff. Check  Jooble.org  to find abroad marine engineer vacancies.

  • Provisioning, shopping, and stocking.
  • Preparing passenger and crew meals.
  • Following instructions and cooking under the direction of others.
  • Galley cleaning.
  • Follow food safety and storage procedures.
  • Food pre-preparation.

Salary Range: $6,000 to $15,000

2nd Engineer

  • Maintain and manage all engineering operations.
  • Hire, train and supervise all engineers.
  • Project manage all upgrades and retrofits, including managing budgets, contracts, and suppliers.
  • Coordinate maintenance schedule for the entire yacht around the usage and seasonal schedules.
  • Maintain costs and accounting for engineering operations.
  • Design and handle all safety operations.
  • Set and maintain standards for operations and cleanliness in the engine room.

Reports to: Chief engineer

Salary Range: $5,500 – $10,000

OOW (Officer of the Watch) Engineer

The OOW is a junior engineering position, but still licensed. There are two categories of OOW – MEOL (Marine Engine Operator License) and the more junior AEC (Assistant Engine Course). The overall responsibilities are similar, working to support the senior engineers and handle independent assignments. The AEC rating is entry level for licensed crew, but has training and certification.

  • Support the chief in all projects.
  • Maintain a clean, safe engine room.
  • Perform all maintenance, troubleshooting and repair tasks as needed.
  • Support motorized water sports.
  • Occasionally assist with other vessel operations, like line handling.

Reports to: Chief Engineer

Salary Range, MEOL: $4,500 to $6,000 Salary Range, AEC: $2,500 to $3,500

Electronics/Technology Officer (ETO)

The ETO takes responsibility for all audio-visual and information technology on board. Ensuring passengers have access to the internet, movies, television, and music is a primary responsibility. This position carries a fair amount of passenger interaction, and an ETO needs good troubleshooting skills to go with customer service skills.

  • Ensure all audio/visual and entertainment systems are always available for passengers.
  • Assist passengers with personal technology and ship systems as needed.
  • Conduct regular maintenance and upgrades of the network, information, and A/V systems around passenger schedules.
  • Assist other engineers as needed, especially with electronic systems.
  • Contribute as needed with other departments for boat and passenger operations.

Salary Range: $4,000 to $9,000

Junior Engineer

This is a lower or entry level position for someone with engineering skills but without formal licensing or certification. The junior engineer will help with safety and cleanliness, and assist in any engineering tasks as needed. The ability to solve problems and fix things opens this spot for anyone capable and willing to do the job.

  • Help with cleaning, maintenance, and safety functions.
  • Help anywhere needed on the yacht.
  • Assist senior engineers as needed, taking direction and following instructions exactly.
  • Constantly develop skills.

eto job on yacht

Modern vessels are furnished with sophisticated electronics which requires skilled handling and occasional troubleshooting, so ETO or Electro-technical Officer is an important member of the Engine Crew who operates and maintains all computer operated machinery onboard.

If elaborate, ETO’s job profile usually includes:

  • Working with and repair of electronic equipment such as Automated Engine Room Controls, High Voltage Systems, pumps, maintenance of ME alarms;
  • Keeping in order ship’s electrical components for instance lighting system, emergency batteries, navigational lights and so on;
  • Faults detection and troubleshooting on the bridge: upkeep of navigational equipment i.e. radio, echosounders, Gypocompasses, DP system, etc.;
  • Maintenance of cargo systems and cranes electrical components.

Electro Technical Officers’ salaries may fluctuate slightly depending on the vessel type. For example, the wage rate for Bulk Carriers and Container Ships vary from USD 4 800 to USD 5 500 . Salaries will be a bit lower - around USD 4000 for Heavy Lifts, Multi Purpose ships, Reefers and similar dry bulk vessels, but there are some decent exclusions.

General Cargo vessels and Coasters are at the bottom of the list with about USD 2 500 - USD 3000 wage rate this position.

ETOs are in demand among crewing managers focusing on tanker fleet. Oil Product Tanker and Chemical Tanker ETOs will be offered from USD 5 500 to USD 6 000 and for LPG/LNG carriers stakes go even higher to USD 7 000 to USD 8 020 per month.

Offshore fleet recruits a lot of Electro Technical Officers as well. Wage rates vary considerably. For most unsophisticated AHTS, PSV, Seismic vessels, AHT, etc. it will constitute USD 150 - 180 per day. Bigger and/or more technically advanced vessels will offer USD 200 - 220 and more per day. Incidentally, ETO’s salary at Jack up rig will begin from USD 300 daily.

eto job on yacht

Hiscox Ltd. issued a statement confirming that the insurer’s chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and Bloomer’s wife, Judy, died in the tragic sinking of the yacht Bayesian off the coast of Sicily on Monday, Aug. 19.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by Jonathan and Judy’s tragic deaths. Our deepest sympathies go out to their family and friends at this devastating time,” according to Aki Hussain, Hiscox Group CEO, in a statement.

“It was a privilege to have known Jonathan and to have benefited from his generosity and wisdom over the last year in his role as chair of Hiscox,” Hussain continued.

“His deep experience across our industry and in the broader business arena, combined with his personal values, made him both an excellent chair and a person I was proud to know and work with. His advice and support were immensely valuable to me, and he will be dearly missed,” he said.

Bloomer was also a non-executive chair at Morgan Stanley International .

In addition to Bloomer and his wife, the other fatalities were British tech magnate Mike Lynch; a Clifford Chance solicitor, Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda Morvillo; and the vessel’s onboard chef, Recaldo Thomas. The body of last missing person, Lynch’s daughter, was recovered on Friday, Aug. 23.

Fifteen people, including Lynch’s wife, survived the accident. There had been 22 passengers and crew on board the yacht Bayesian, which was named for a British mathematician.

Family clings to hope of air pocket in sunken superyacht as debris hampers search

PORTICELLO, Sicily — Divers searching for six missing people from a superyacht which sank off the coast of Sicily told NBC News Wednesday that debris inside the vessel, as well as its depth, were making their job difficult.

As hopes of finding anyone alive dwindled, the divers said that they had managed to force open one of the Bayesian’s access doors but access to the cabins where people could be trapped was being hampered by detritus.

The divers, who were not authorized to speak publicly, added that the depth of the wreck meant they were left with only 10 minutes to search the 184-foot yacht once they reached it. Then they had to return to the surface, they said.

On Wednesday, the dock where they set off from was swarming with vehicles, boats and rescuers. Nearby tourists, reporters and photographers have gathered, eager for news. Helicopters occasionally fly over the area.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and five of the 22 other people who were aboard the yacht remain unaccounted for and are believed to be trapped in the Bayesian’s hull, nearly 170 feet underwater.

The Bayesian, which had 22 people aboard including 10 crew, was anchored some 700 metres from port before dawn when it was struck by a waterspout, a sort of mini tornado.

Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda, are also missing.

Officials confirmed Monday that at least one person, the ship’s cook, had died.

Rescuers said Tuesday that there might be people trapped inside the cabins, especially considering the timing of the storm, but that they had so far been unable to check through the ship’s portholes.

“The operations are long and complex,” Italy’s national fire department, whose diving teams have been participating in the search, said on X .

Italy's coast guard also said Tuesday that divers were also using a remotely-operated underwater vehicle to aid in the search.

Sailboat sinks off Sicily

The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was one of the 15 people rescued Monday after it capsized near Sicily’s main city of Palermo in what Italian officials called a “violent storm.”

Built by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered Bayesian could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.

Lynch, who was regularly described in U.K. media as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” was acquitted by a San Francisco jury of fraud charges stemming from the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion.

The Bayesian, which had 22 people aboard including 10 crew, was anchored some 700 metres from port before dawn when it was struck by a waterspout, a sort of mini tornado.

Prosecutors alleged that Lynch and Autonomy’s vice president for finance, Stephen Chamberlain, had padded the firm’s finances ahead of the sale. Lynch’s lawyers argued that HP was so eager to acquire Autonomy that it failed to adequately check the books .

The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who brought Morvillo, one of his U.S. lawyers and Bloomer, who testified in his defense, on the trip.

Bloomer’s twin brother, Jeremy, told the BBC on Tuesday the family was “coping the best we can” and he was hopeful there might still be air pockets inside the hull.

Chamberlain was not aboard the Bayesian.

In what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a car struck and killed Chamberlain on Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.

Claudio Lavanga and Claudia Rizzo reported from Porticello and Yuliya Talmazan from London.

23 Lesser-Known Facts About Kamala Harris

Beyond the headlines, Ms. Harris has taken ballet, collected Converse sneakers and felt the influence of her grandfather, a diplomat.

Kamala Harris, in a white suit, stands at an ice cream counter in Washington.

By Andrew Trunsky and Alyce McFadden

  • Published Aug. 22, 2024 Updated Aug. 29, 2024

Kamala Harris’s long political résumé is well known and expansive: Before becoming vice president, she was a U.S. senator. Before that, she was the California attorney general and the district attorney in San Francisco. Here are some things you might not know about the Democratic Party’s nominee for president.

1. Her name translates to “lotus flower” in Sanskrit . It’s a near-mythical symbol in Indian culture, representing beauty, prosperity and fertility and is associated with the deity Lakshmi.

2. She has broken the most ties in U.S. Senate history. As vice president, she has often been called upon to cast a deciding vote when the Senate is deadlocked. Last year, she cast her 32nd tiebreaker, beating the previous record of 31 set by John C. Calhoun, who was vice president from 1825 to 1832.

3. She’s short (compared to presidents past). Five-foot-four, to be exact. If elected, she would be one of the two shortest presidents in American history. (The other is James Madison.) But her height checks in at just about average for an American woman.

4 . She knows how to deliver fries with that . Ms. Harris worked at McDonald’s between her freshman and sophomore years in college. She fried the fries, worked the ice cream machine and staffed the cash register.

5. Her best friend set her up with her future husband, Doug Emhoff . Their first “date” was an hourlong phone call, and they made plans to get dinner that weekend in Los Angeles, where he was based. “I could hardly wait to fly down,” Ms. Harris wrote.

6. She loves Doritos. In her memoir, she described the night in 2016 that Donald J. Trump won the presidency (which was the same night she got elected to the U.S. Senate). “No one really knew what to say or do,” she wrote. “I sat down on the couch with Doug and ate an entire family-size bag of Classic Doritos. Didn’t share a single chip.”

7. She attended both a Black Baptist church and a Hindu temple as a child . “My mother understood very well that she was raising two Black daughters,” she wrote in her memoir. “And she was determined to make sure we would grow into confident, proud Black women.”

8. Her prosecutorial style left some in Washington flummoxed. When Ms. Harris served in the Senate, she drew attention for her sharp questioning of witnesses. In 2017, as she was grilling then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions about his role as campaign surrogate for Mr. Trump and contact with Russian officials, a visibly flustered Mr. Sessions objected. “I’m not able to be rushed this fast,” he complained at one point. “It makes me nervous.”

9. She spent her high school years in Montreal . “It was a difficult transition,” she wrote, “since the only French I knew was from my ballet classes.”

10. She failed the California bar exam on her first try. “I couldn’t get my head around it,” she wrote. She soon realized her preparation amounted to “the most half-assed performance of my life.” She passed on her second attempt.

11. She tangled with Jamie Dimon. Ms. Harris got into a heated disagreement with Mr. Dimon, J.P. Morgan’s chief executive, when she was the attorney general of California. It happened during the financial crisis, when she was pursuing relief from big banks for homeowners who had faced foreclosure. “We were like dogs in a fight,” Ms. Harris recalled in her memoir. 12. But their most recent encounter was calmer. She eventually secured more than $20 billion in relief from the banks, and despite their history, Ms. Harris and Mr. Dimon had lunch at the White House in March.

13. She likes to cook . Ms. Harris loves food. She has ribbed her running mate, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, about his “ white guy tacos ,” shared her turkey cooking tips and said that she liked to read recipes to unwind . In 2019 Ms. Harris posted a series of cooking videos to YouTube, including one with the actor Mindy Kaling that has been watched more than six million times. “Senator Harris, I say this with respect, you’re kind of a show-off,” Ms. Kaling quipped. “Right?” Ms. Harris replied.

14. She goes way back with Barack Obama. She hosted a San Francisco fund-raiser for his 2004 Senate run, then was the first major office holder in California to endorse his 2008 presidential bid, even as most Democratic heavyweights threw their support behind Hillary Clinton. The endorsement, seen by some as a political risk, paid off. Mr. Obama endorsed her bid for California attorney general in 2010, and on Tuesday he praised her as a uniter on a mission to “build a country that is more secure and more just, more equal and more free.”

15. But she once turned down a job offer in his administration. It was 2014, and Eric Holder, Mr. Obama’s attorney general, called her and said he was planning to step down. He asked if she was interested in succeeding him. She considered the offer but ultimately declined.

16. Mr. Obama once publicly opined about Ms. Harris’s looks. The former president called Ms. Harris “by far the best-looking attorney general in the country” — and later apologized. The remark came at a fund-raiser in 2013, right after he also complimented her on her smarts and dedication to the law.

17. Her grandfather was a diplomat. Ms. Harris’s maternal grandfather, P.V. Gopalan, was a civil servant in India. When she was a child, Mr. Gopalan served as a diplomat in Zambia. She has said he was among her “ favorite people ” and “ subconsciously influenced ” how she thinks.

18. She was a political activist in college. During her freshman year at Howard University in Washington, D.C., she spent many weekends on the National Mall protesting apartheid in South Africa.

19. She remains close with her line sisters in Alpha Kappa Alpha. At Howard, where she competed on the debate team and graduated in 1986, Ms. Harris joined the Black sorority. In July, she said that she kept a signed copy of a book by one of its founders, Norma Boyd, in her West Wing office “as a testament to our enduring legacy.”

20. She also belongs to a prominent, invite-only nonprofit for Black women. Ms. Harris joined The Links Incorporated in 2018. It’s one of the oldest groups of its kind in America — a service organization focused on Black Americans and other people of African ancestry. Members have included Rosa Parks, Betty Shabazz and the civil rights lawyer Constance Baker Motley.

21. Her footwear is distinct. Ms. Harris has a large collection of Chuck Taylors: a black pair, a white pair, Chucks with and without laces, Chucks for hot and cold weather, and “the platform kind for when I’m wearing a pantsuit.”

22. Her love of dancing has persisted from her childhood to the West Wing. While she was in Montreal, she started a dance group called Midnight Magic. More recently, videos of her dancing in public — to Q-Tip at a celebration of the 50th anniversary of hiphop, down an escalator , with a marching band of children — have gone viral on social media.

23. Thursday will be doubly important for Ms. Harris. She is set to formally accept the Democratic nomination on her and Mr. Emhoff’s 10th wedding anniversary.

An earlier version of this article misidentified a video in which Kamala Harris was dancing. It was from an event celebrating the 50th anniversary of hip hop, not her 50th birthday.

Steve Jobs' former yacht Venus collided with another superyacht off the coast of Naples

  • Venus, the yacht built for Steve Jobs , collided with another yacht off Italy's coast.
  • It's unclear which yacht struck which or when exactly the crash occurred.
  • With a minimalist design, Venus is one of the world's most iconic superyachts.

Insider Today

Venus, Steve Jobs' former superyacht — now owned by his wife, the philanthropist and investor Laurene Powell Jobs — has collided with another superyacht off of the Italian coast.

A spokesperson from Powell Jobs' Emerson Collective who spoke with a crewmember confirmed to Business Insider that Venus, the 78-meter yacht Steve Jobs commissioned, had collided with Lady Moura, a 105-meter yacht. The collision happened on July 22 off the coast of Naples, Italy.

The spokesperson said that only crew were onboard the yacht and that both boats were anchored when a sudden change of wind led to the collision.

Venus is cruising in the Ligurian Sea, while Lady Moura made its way to Mykonos on Wednesday, based on publicly available tracking data from Marine Traffic.

Videos posted on social media show the strikingly minimalist Venus and the Lady Moura coming into contact. It's not clear from the videos which superyacht struck which, though someone who said they were aboard the Lady Moura seemed to blame Venus' crew on social media, SuperYacht Times reported. The person said the damage was "only a scratch, albeit a significant one that will be costly to repair."

Others on social media said that the Venus appeared to be moored and that Lady Moura seemed to have swung into the boat. BI hasn't been able to independently verify either claim.

Related stories

The Italian Marina Militare didn't respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. The owner of the Lady Moura couldn't be reached.

No matter how little damage may have been done, insurance will probably cover it. Yacht insurance , which can cost six figures each month, is one of the largest costs incurred by yacht owners.

Venus, built by the top yacht-builder Feadship, was delivered after Jobs died in 2011 and was worth $130 million upon completion. The Apple cofounder was heavily involved in the design process alongside the French architect and decorator Philippe Starck.

"Venus comes from the philosophy of minimum," Starck said of her design. "The elegance of the minimum, approaching dematerialization."

Jobs and Starck spent four years working on her design, the designer told Vanity Fair , holding monthly meetings to discuss her specifications. She has six identical cabins, was built to maximize absolute silence, and, upon delivery, included the most up-to-date technology.

"There will never again be a boat of that quality again. Because never again will two madmen come together to accomplish such a task," Starck told the magazine. "It was not a yacht that Steve and I were constructing, we were embarked on a philosophical action, implemented according to a quasi-religious process. We formed a single brain with four lobes." August 7, 2024 — This story has been updated with a statement from a Laurene Powell Jobs spokesperson.
