Beneteau First 285
Beneteau First 285 is a 28 ′ 1 ″ / 8.6 m monohull sailboat designed by Jean Marie Finot (Groupe Finot) and built by Beneteau between 1985 and 1993.
Rig and Sails
Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Beneteau First 285
- July 8, 2009
The Mauric-designed First 30 of 1976 was more popular worldwide – 1,000 built compared to 443 for this Jean Berret 1980 replacement which was the one that caught on in the UK. Below decks, the design shows its age a little but she gives nothing away in performance. She was, in fact, a detuned IOR half-tonner. With a foot more beam than the Mauric 30, the 30E featured a proper double aft cabin but couldn’t manage a permanent chart table, relying instead on a fold-down one. The heads was amidships. She had a huge saloon table for the crew of seven, though there was only stowage for four or five. The fit-out was fairly basic but improved as production ran on. Introduced in 1987, there were deep keel, wing keel and centreboard versions of this model, of which 451 were sold. The interior was functional for a boat of this size with limited stowage and simple fit-out. The galley was just adequate and the chart table faced aft over the starboard settee. There were six berths in all. She was at home on the club racing circuit but could also be a lively family cruiser.
LOA 8.9m (27ft 10in), LWL 7.777m (25ft 6in), beam 2.99m (9ft 10in), draught 0.66m to 1.94m (2ft 2in to 6ft4in), or 1.2m (3ft 10in), or 1.6m (5ft 3in), displacement 2,800kg (6,160lb). Price guide: £25,000 to £32,000.

Hello, I just bought and received my first sailboat--a 1988 Beneteau First 285! The downside is after transport, I could use some help with re-rigging her. I've searched desperately for a copy of the owner's manual and come up empty-handed as it appears others have here previously. I thought I would give it one last try here and see if anybody has a pdf copy available. Thanks in advance! -Lars
Nice boat. Rigging is actually rather straight-forward. The 285's fractional rig uses a simple single set of aft-swept spreaders. This means a cap shroud and a lower diagonal pretty much hold the rig up and back against the pull of the forestay. That backstay adds additional tension. Tuning and rigging is explained here. You rig on page 42 https://www.dropbox.com/s/ilab8s9lqta2mjv/Selden Hints and Advice.pdf?dl=0
Lars, I sent you a PM with an attachment. Jackdaw, I have a document with dimensions and diagrams, specs, deck layout, etc.. It was kind of my 'manual' on our First 285. I'm kind of rushing around here, or I'd do a little more legwork of my own, what's your opinion on the best way to share this info for someone like Lars, looking for this particular info, in the future? A dropbox account like yours? I'm open to anything, I'd like to be able to share it, if it will help someone out.

Thank you both very much! SoSound— I think this is gonna help me sort out where the bag full of sheets/halyards belong a little easier. The marina stepped the mast, but the rest is up to me.
And, let's try Dropbox, then! If anyone else is watching this thread, or comes across it, try this link for a copy of what I had called 'specs' when the file was named. But, it's a basic manual for a First 285... https://www.dropbox.com/s/3cwqzxiis3916fz/first285specs.pdf?dl=0
I'm currently looking at buying a First 285 and came across your post in my research. How are you going with it? Have you come across any problems yet? I'm looking at working up to coastal cruising - up the Queensland coast inside the Barrier Reef from Hervey Bay - with two of us on board for a month or so.
