ABOUT KETCHES

A ketch - not to be mistaken for a Schooner Boats or a Yawl Boats , has two masts with the mizzen mast stepped before the rudder head.

Note, if the mast is stepped aft of the rudder head the boat becomes a yawl, not a ketch and a yawl rig tends to be used on smaller boats, ketch is often used on larger vessels, notably the Brixham trawlers and trading ketches of the last century.

The mizzen sail in a ketch is a driving sail, in a yawl, it is often more of a balancing sail. The mizzen sail(check out our huge selection of Sailboats ) is always is smaller, often much smaller than the mainsail. If it was the same size or larger the boat would become a schooner. This allows you to use more sail area in a manageable way, as it is broken down into smaller sails.

Some say that practically, ketches are more work to sail but have a really convenient basis for a jury rig if your main mast goes over the side, plus a great place for hanging radar, other aerials. All of this with the added benefit of looking great!

SPECIFICATIONS

Henry R. Hinckley envisioned the H49 Center Cockpit Ketch as an easily handled, comfortable, and capable cruiser with liveaboard accommodations for his own family. The big beamy shoal draft cruiser has proven to be just that, whether cruising northern waters, the Bahamas, or world voyaging. 24 were built between 1971 -1976. Simba is a rare find whos owners have spared no expense towards her upkeep including two major refits and constant upgrades and attention since her purchase in 2001. Sailed seasonally the past twenty years on the fresh clear waters of Lake Superior, and always stored in heated storage,  Simba is in excellent, turn-key, set-sail, condition and ready for your wanderlust to take you wherever it leads. Hinckley Yacht's well-deserved reputation for building yachts of sound seaworthy design and hand-crafted quality has and will continue to serve Simba's owners well for many years to come.   

The H49 Center Cockpit Ketch with a shoal 5'10" draft with the centerboard up and 10' draft with the board down provides a great deal of versatility for cruising the Great Lakes, Eastern Seaboard, Chesapeake Bay, South Florida and the Keys, the Bahamas, and beyond. The ketch design makes for an easy-to-manage sail plan while also keeping the mast height low enough for easy transit on the ICW. The H49's beam and full volume has the capacity for plenty of fuel, water, and stores to extend your cruising range and liveaboard comfort. The 120hp Ford Lehman diesel engine should provide power to move the boat at a top-end cruising speed of around 9 knots. The fully enclosed center cockpit helm is a comfortable all-weather space to operate from with good visibility and seating room for crew and guests. The aft cockpit also has a full enclosure offering pleasant seating with ease of access from the master stateroom.  

Accommodations

Descending the companionway you will find a welcoming salon finished with richly hand-crafted joiner work in birch-wood and highly finished teak and holly cabin sole all complimented by luxurious ultra-suede leather upholstery. There's an L-shaped settee to port with a large salon table and settee to starboard to accommodate all for dining and socializing both settees have pull-outs to form additional twin berths. A flat-screen TV is mounted on the port bulkhead allowing comfortable viewing. Aft and to port is the well-organized and appointed galley running in-line full length of the passageway aft. To starboard is a dedicated and neatly organized navigation station equipped with fully updated Raymarine instrumentation and numerous drawers for charts and ship's papers. Just aft of the nav. station is a separate and well-organized electrical and mechanical room for vessel maintenance and servicing. Moving forward is a spacious head to port. The forward stateroom has a double v-berth with numerous drawers and a large hanging locker. The forward bulkhead provides easy access to the anchor chain locker. The aft master stateroom is easily accessed from the salon via the port galley/passageway. You will find a comfortable stateroom with port and starboard twin berths that will be secure sea berths when underway. The aft stateroom includes a private head with a fully enclosed shower. From the stateroom is easy access to the aft cockpit. Simba has a huge amount of storage in numerous, cabinets, drawers and hanging lockers for organized liveaboard comfort. The highly varnished teak and holly cabin sole is well protected throughout with custom fitted floor coverings. Last but certainly not least is the comfortable headroom you will find in all the cabin spaces.

A ketch is a sailboat whose rigging has 2 masts : the main mast (also called mainmast) and the mizzenmast (or aft-mast), which is shorter and located at the rear of the boat in front of the helm station. This stabilises and increases the sail area. The first mast, with a cutter rig, supports the mainsail as well as several headsails on a bowsprit, while the second mast carries the mizzen sail. Ketch rigs can be used on a monohull or multihull (slightly rarer). This rig is often compared to the yawl (or sloop) since they look very similar. The only difference is that on a yawl, the mizzenmast is positioned behind the helm station.

A ketch can be rigged in three different ways:

• a double-spreader ketch: the main mast and mizzenmast both have a square-topped gaff rig with a spreader;
• a single-spreader ketch (or gaff rig) : the mainmast will have a mainsail with a spreader and square rigging while the mizzen mast has a marconi mainsail;
• Bermudian ketch (or marconi): this is the rigging found on modern ketches. Both masts have a marconi sail and the foremast may have one or two headsails.

The history of ketches

Etymologically, ketch is derived from 'catch' , which refers to a fishing catch. This is because, traditionally, ketches were fishing vessels whose rigging setup made it easy to fish with nets.

The advantages of a ketch.

Ketches have many benefits:

• better stability in heavy weather;
• easier to use;
• a split sail plan: the sails are smaller and therefore easier to handle;
• ideal for sailing on the high seas;
• and some people like them for their elegance.

Ketches are sometimes preferred to sloops because of the split sails which allow for easier handling. Also, over long distances, the extra sail area on a ketch (as compared to a sloop) makes the boat more balanced and easier to handle because it is smaller.

The sturdiness of the Evasion 32 from the Vendée-based manufacturer Bénéteau has made it internationally famous and it behaves very well under sail, another factor that makes it popular with sailing enthusiasts. The Endurance 35 Ketch from the Belliure shipyard has demonstrated time and time again that it sails well and the owners of this boat find it very safe. 56m Perini Navi ketch Asahi joins market

The 56-metre ketch-rigged sailing yacht Asahi has joined the market with Glen Moltoni of One Brokerage and Nathan Farrelly of Edmiston .

Built in aluminium by Italian yard Perini Navi to a design by Ron Holland , Asahi was delivered in 2009. The seventh of Perini Navi’s 56-metre Sailing Series, in 2010 Asahi won Best 45m+ Sailing Yacht at the World Superyacht Awards .

She was refitted in 2023 when her hull and stern were repainted, new decking was added around the mast, a new galley was installed and new soles laid in the open-plan saloon and dining room.

Her extensive teak sun deck and flybridge provide ample space, and the perfect setting, for relaxation and entertaining. The interior by Remi Tessier provides refined luxury – showcasing the designer's cabinet-making pedigree with extensive use of mahogany, wenge, ebony and textured leather.

Accommodation is provided for an owner's party of 12, comprising a master cabin, with bathtub in its bathroom, two VIP cabins, two twins with Pullman berths and an upper-lower bunked cabin. There are quarters for a crew of 10. 

Asahi is not to be underestimated on the superyacht regatta circuit. She sports a carbon fibre, automatic furling boom and, together with her streamlined, full aluminium hull and 1,500 square metres of sail, she can reach speeds of 15.5 knots. Her Doyle sails were all replaced in 2022.

The yacht's flybridge offers a large Jacuzzi pool aft, ample guest seating and a pair of helm stations with commanding views. The aft cockpit offers guests al fresco dining at a 12-seater table.

Under power, she boasts a maximum cruising range of 4,000 nautical miles at 11 knots with power coming from two 1,275hp Caterpillar C-32 diesel engines. The 499GT ABS-classed yacht for sale has an "excellent charter history" and boasts a fold-down swim platform aft that can also be used for barbecues. Dual tender garages are positioned forward. A new Protector chase boat is included in her inventory.

Lying in Sardinia, Italy, Asahi is asking €30,900,000.
