Yacht sinks at Marina Del Rey dock after ammunition and fireworks catch on fire

By Dean Fioresi , Julie Sharp

Updated on: September 20, 2024 / 6:01 AM PDT / KCAL News

A luxury yacht carrying nearly 1,000 rounds of ammunition and fireworks caught fire shortly before sinking in the Marina del Rey harbor on Wednesday evening. Two people were on board the 100-foot yacht when the fire ignited, but both were able to get off safely.

The U.S. Coast Guard continued environmental cleanup efforts Thursday morning as the yacht bobbed on its side, testing air quality and remediating water contamination from fuel spillage. By Friday morning, 2,000 feet of boom were installed around the area as crews coordinate with the Oil Spill Response Organization to assess the extent of impact and continue to clean up.

At around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday,  firefighters rushed to the docks at Basin A, where the boat, named "The Admiral," was heavily involved in flames, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Crews tried to fight the fire both by ground and by water, but it proved difficult to contain.

Bystander video showed fireworks shooting off the deck of the boat and bursting overhead, all while firefighters worked to contain the volatile flames. Two hours later, the boat quickly sank below the water line and by 11 p.m. it was nearly fully submerged.

With SkyCal overhead Wednesday evening, large flames could be seen inside of the boat despite a heavy barrage of water being sprayed by crews. Hours after the firefight began, SkyCal returned to the scene where the  boat had almost sank  entirely under the water in the harbor.

After sinking, crews began a "booming" operation, which was conducted in order to contain the foam that firefighters sprayed and the fuel that leaked during the incident. Heavy equipment was brought in to pull the boat back to the surface, leaving it floating on its side.

screenshot-2024-09-18-at-10-46-15-pm.png

Thursday morning, a Coast Guard representative said efforts are concentrated on containing hazardous fuel or other material that may have spilled into the water. Also, air quality is a concern as the boat was filled with 4,000 gallons of diesel fuel.

"What we do know is that the vessel capacity was 6,000 gallons. We do know that they fueled up with 4,000 gallons of diesel, but we still do not know how much fuel discharged out into the environment and how much remains still in the vessel," Lt. Cmdr. Omar Borges, of the U.S. Coast Guard said.

Air readings so far say that there are no flammable fumes in the air, and the air is not hazardous for locals to breathe, according to the Coast Guard.

The process will take a number of days, monitoring air and water. Officials said there is no evidence yet that any wildlife has been harmed.

It's unclear if the people on the yacht were the owners, but there were no injuries. Officials have not yet confirmed how they will upright the boat and remove it from the harbor.

Yacht with explosive materials onboard burns and sinks in Marina del Rey

A luxury, 100-foot yacht docked in Marina del Rey that had fireworks and 1,000 rounds of ammunition aboard erupted into a fiery inferno before sinking on Wednesday night.

The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to reports of the blaze at 2201 Basin A shortly after 8:30pm and thankfully, the two passengers that were onboard escaped with only minor injuries. With Mariners Village and the Courtyard Marriott close by, this was quite the spectacle in the harbor, burning brightly against the black night sky and as such it was captured by many on video and posted to social media.

Called The Admiral, the vessel reportedly had large amounts of both fireworks and ammunition of an unknown caliber stored below deck on the starboard side of the vessel. As first responders worked to contain the blaze, which threatened nearby boats and residential structures, fireworks began exploding from the deck of the boat.

According to Boat International , the twin-diesel-engine yacht was built by US shipyard Broward Marine in 1986. It featured four cabins including the master suite, all were equipped with flatscreen televisions, entertainment centers and en suite facilities. It could hold 10 guests with three crew members and was last listed in 2018 for $985,000.

It’s unclear exactly how the fire started, but only two hours after the blaze began, the vessel began sinking into the not terribly deep water of the marina at the end of Bora Bora Way. The boat was declared fully submerged at 11:33pm.

Fire crews set up a boom in the area of water where the boat was docked in an attempt to capture any contaminants leaking from the vessel as it was sinking. According to a Coast Guard spokesperson, an estimated 4,000 gallons of diesel was dumped into the water.

Cleanup begins after yacht goes up in flames and sinks in Marina del Rey

Approximately 4,000 gallons of diesel fuel have leaked from the now sunken boat, by benjamin papp • published september 20, 2024 • updated on september 20, 2024 at 10:48 am.

The United States Coast Guard installed roughly 2,000 feet of boom Friday morning in Marina Del Rey to contain nearly 4,000 gallons of leaking diesel fuel after a yacht fire.

The yacht sank Wednesday night when a powerful explosion engulfed a the large boat in flames with nearly 1,000 rounds of unused fireworks and ammunition on board. Fire crews poured water onto the burning vessel, which was ultimately destroyed and sank into the harbor at 2201 Basin A.

“Our Coast Guard team was able to transition quickly from a fire response to an oil spill response, which allowed us to ensure we had the right people and resources mobilized,'' said Capt. Stacey L. Crecy, the Coast Guard's federal on-scene coordinator. “We were able to deploy containment and collection equipment as soon as it was safe to do so to mitigate the impacts from the discharge of diesel from the vessel after it became submerged.''

The booms were placed around the vessel and affected areas of the harbor. Crews from both the USGC and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife will continue to monitor the area until the cleanup is complete.

In a statement Friday morning the Department of Fish and Wildlife said there are currently no impacts to sensitive environmental sites or species, nor has any oiled wildlife been reported.

The USCG has also partnered with Patriot Environmental Services, Cleans Harbors organization, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s County, and the Oiled Wildlife Care Network.

The spill is not yet a threat to public health, according to USCG.

The fuel spill cleanup operation could take several days. It’s also still not immediately clear when the boat will be removed from the water.

Yacht blazes with 1,000 rounds of ammunition and fireworks onboard in Marina del Rey

Monday, September 23rd, 2024

Written by: Chantal Haines

A 30.5-metre Broward Marine yacht carrying nearly 1,000 rounds of ammunition and fireworks caught fire before sinking in Marina del Rey harbour, California.

The yacht named The Admiral was docked at Marine Del Rey when the blaze broke out. L.A County Fire Department reported that at approximately 8.33pm on Wednesday 18 September, the fire department responded to a report of boat fire. Two passengers safely evacuated the vessel without injury and the cleanup operation is now in full swing.

The County Fire Department said the owner confirmed that there were 1,000 rounds of unspent ammunition and fireworks onboard. Witness video footage (see below) now circulating online shows explosions and fireworks shooting into the air as the blaze takes hold of the yacht. The cause of the yacht fire is still under investigation.

“I saw it fully engulfed in flames and like many of us living here, heard an explosion and saw fireworks coming off it, and more flames and then walked down here and captured video of it,” witness Lynn Rose told  NBC Los Angeles.

Firefighters battled the blaze to avoid the fire spreading to other nearby craft and structures. At approximately 10.30pm The Admiral began to list and sink.

Clean-up operation in Marina del Rey

The United States Coast Guard (USCG) established a Unified Command on Friday 20 September to monitor clean-up efforts. It includes members of the Coast Guard and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Office of Spill Prevention and Response (CDFW-OSPR).

Coast Guard and CDFW-OSPR teams monitored the deployment of approximately 2,000 feet of boom placed around the vessel and affected areas. Crews continue to monitor the area and worked through the night with the Oil Spill Response Organization to assess the extent of impact and continue clean-up efforts.

“Our Coast Guard team was able to transition quickly from a fire response to an oil spill response, which allowed us to ensure we had the right people and resources mobilized,” says Capt. Stacey L. Crecy, the Coast Guard’s federal on-scene coordinator. “We were able to deploy containment and collection equipment as soon as it was safe to do so to mitigate the impacts from the discharge of diesel from the vessel after it became submerged.”

“A CDFW-OSPR environmental scientist is on scene working to monitor and limit impacts to environmental resources and sensitive sites,” says Christian Corbo, CDFW-OSPR state on-scene coordinator. “Currently, there are no impacts to environmental sensitive sites or species.”

We focus on the Mid-Atlantic seaboard of the United States where our knowledge can add the most value to your properties. "Jonathan was incredibly thorough when responding to our due diligence questions and was a fantastic facilitator as he guided our purchase of Sunset Harbor Marina through closing.  It was a pleasure to work with him and we would do so again."

Royden Cooper, CEO Epum Marina Partners

“Jonathan recently helped my wife and I sell our marina in the middle Bay that we had owned and operated for over 22 years.  We, over the last 6 or so years, had tried to sell via two internet-based marina realtors and one local realtor.  One of the internet realtors never even came to the marina to see the operation in person!  Jonathan, prior to listing, took the time to visit the marina, do a detailed valuation and get to know us and the marina.  He came up with a realistic value, we listed with him and within a very short time we began receiving real interest from qualified candidates. We accepted an offer and closed the deal after about 90 days with Jonathan shepherding the process all the way.  We cannot speak highly enough about his professionalism and contacts.  A word to the wise marina sellers, the internet route is not the best way to go.”

Ken Knull, former owner of Yankee Point Marina in Lancaster County, Virginia

The Marina Buyer’s Acquisition Checklist

marinas yachts realty

Work with your financial advisor to establish price range

Fine-tune your criteria so we match you with the right marina asset, get a preliminary pre-approval letter from your lender, work with your simply marinas advisor for a preliminary marina valuation, choose an attorney familiar with marina assets, ensure a thorough marina due diligence assessment:, assess the physical condition of the asset, examine the infrastructure and equipment, learn about the current staffing capabilities, study the marina financials, trend, and market position, look at the future upside and ability to add value, request/conduct environmental reports, where needed, work with your attorney to review survey, lien, and title search, work with our team to advise you on the deal structure, ensure transition support, if needed.

The value of a marina is generally measured by the income approach using the capitalization rate (cap rate). We currently see marinas trading in the 7% – 12% cap rate range. Other factors that can affect the marina value include potential upside, condition of improvements, type of income sources, existence of in-place staff, financing terms, as well as the location and whether the marina is owned as a leasehold or in fee-simple.

Certain marina attributes enhance a buyer’s investment in any market. These include its location, the condition of the facility, its amenities, and the extent to which buyers are basing their purchases almost solely on cash flow and current income. If the marina or boatyard has some potential upside, giving marina ownership the ability to add value, this is a definite plus. If the marina is well maintained with professional management, needs no significant maintenance and repair and shows a positive cash flow, then it’s in good shape to buy, especially if it has attractive amenities. It should be noted that certain buyers are willing to buy sites, which are currently not cash flowing or need an overhaul of their amenities, but only if they have a clear upside and a discounted purchase.

A critical factor is availability of debt, if the acquisition is not going to be a cash purchase. Work with your banker and financial advisor to determine the investment amount you can dedicate to the marina purchase. Contact a few lenders who offer different programs to get prequalified and understand their requirements and timeline.

Contact us for a complimentary strategic consultation and preliminary valuation.
