Superyacht BIG FISH is an expedition type steel displacement luxury motor yacht 45m (147' 7") in length which was designed by Greg Marshall Design and launched by McMullen & Wing New Zealand in 2010. Filled with peripheral equipment and water toys the yacht also has a 28 ft customised McMullen & Wing tender onboard which has a 300 mile range. BIG FISH also has a comprehensive electronic equipment list, including an audio video system which was supplied and installed by Audio Video Concepts and Design. This Kaleidescape system distributes audio and video signals throughout the entire yacht. It does this from central hard drives which are capable of storing 1200 films and thousands of music CD's. In addition satellite TV signals can be received and displayed world wide.

This outstanding quality yacht is a successful collaboration between yacht’s owners, Greg Marshall Design and McMullen & Wing – a partnership which has been successful in the past. The philosophy behind the design and building of Big Fish centers on an idea that the best luxury expedition vessel must be able to achieve certain key requirements. These include safely, securely and comfortably transporting the yacht owners, guests and crew to any ocean, and being able to remain on station for extended periods of time in the process.

BIG FISH Specifications

Accordingly, this explorer superyacht can accommodate adequate stores of fuel, water, consumables, specialised cargo and supplies for any imaginable ocean adventure. In fact, if required, she can carry medicine, books or building supplies to remote villages, or scientific and oceanographic equipment or laboratory on a voyage of exploration.

Yacht Charter Accommodation

Charter accommodation consists of five double staterooms, all with ensuite facilities, meaning she can sleep a maximum of 10 guests overnight. She can also cruise during the day with 12 guests. The guest cabins on the Main deck can be converted into two VIP suites. Wall disappears and beds fold back against the wall, giving flexibility.

Security: A Pelco CCTV system using 6 pan, tilt and zoom cameras is fitted. Pressure and infra red sensors are also part of this system. Display: All of the devices on board can be displayed on any of five V.E.I. (US) 21 inch flat screens located in the pilothouse dash board. Audio Visual Equipment and Deck Facilities very comprehensive audio video system is supplied and installed by Audio Video Concepts and Design. The result is a go-anywhere explorer yacht that will take you on an adventurous charter in absolute luxury. This luxury superyacht boasts a 10,000 nautical mile range and carries a substantial tender for further remote exploration.

Designed inside and out by Gregory Marshall, the BIG FISH yacht has plenty of space to take in your awe-inspiring surroundings, like the main salon with its floor-to-ceiling windows.

Up to 10 guests can be accommodated during your BIG FISH yacht charter. The owner’s bridge deck suite presents uninterrupted views through the giant side and aft racing windows, with sliding glass doors leading to a private terrace. The rest of the party will sleep on the lower deck, which can be set up as two generous, full-beam suites or four half-beam cabins.

With an award-winning chef on the crew, meal times will be unmissable. You could start your day with breakfast and juices on the sun deck, where you’ll get 360-degree views. 1. YELLOW BREECHES CREEK

Beloved by anglers of every skill level thanks to abundant trout and a mile-long catch-and-release section near Boiling Springs.

World famous limestone creek that flows through woodland and farmland before emptying into the Conodoguinet Creek.

4.  OPOSSUM LAKE

Fifty-nine-acre lake stocked with rainbow trout.

• Three boating access points of which one has a surfaced launch ramp, boating is limited to boats powered by electric motors and un-powered boats

• Species, including largemouth bass, bluegill, purebred muskellunge, black crappie and tiger muskellunge, are catch-and- release and must be immediately returned unharmed.

Located at Pine Grove Furnace State Park.

7.  CONODOGUINET CREEK

How to Get Started

Make sure to take a few minutes to obtain a fishing license and/or launch permit and read over fishing and boating regulations before starting your trip. Visit the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission website  for information on boat registration, fishing licenses, water trails and  basic skills . 

You can purchase a fishing license online , by mail, or in person at 11 locations throughout the county including K-Mart in Carlisle or Wal-Mart in Carlisle, Mechanicsburg or Shippensburg.

A license, which must be displayed on an outer garment while fishing, is required of all people 16 years and older. A current Pennsylvania trout/salmon permit (stamp) is required to fish for trout and salmon in PA waters. These can also be purchased at the locations listed above.

Investigators around the world have been searching for sanctions-hit Russian oligarchs’ yachts. One has been hiding in plain sight.

Italian authorities in March impounded Russian coal and fertilisers magnate Andrey Melnichenko’s $600mn Sailing Yacht A after Russia invaded Ukraine. Another yacht, the $300mn Philippe Starck-designed Motor Yacht A, has been anchored for weeks in the port of Ras al-Khaimah, in the United Arab Emirates.

By placing his yacht in the UAE, Melnichenko has put it beyond the reach of western governments enforcing sanctions on those deemed supportive of Russian president Vladimir Putin’s war on Ukraine.

Its presence is a symbolic reminder of the Gulf monarchy’s ambivalence towards western sanctions on Russia, allies of Putin and the wealthy businessmen who have often benefited from ties to the state.

While the UAE government is trying to enhance measures against money laundering to exit a global dirty-money watchdog’s watchlist, the economic foundation of cities such as Dubai has long been based on welcoming flows of assets and people.

“Given its non-enforcement of western sanctions, the dilemma for the UAE is how to sustain its place as an open destination for capital while also appearing to be a good global citizen,” said one compliance professional. “It’s a tricky balancing act.”

The government of the Isle of Man said it had in March deregistered Melnichenko’s yachts, including Motor Yacht A, because of western sanctions, saying, “we will continue to act with appropriate robustness should the situation warrant it”.

Marine locator services placed Motor Yacht A off the Maldives in March. The Financial Times then saw the yacht on April 18. On Saturday it remained moored opposite Ras al-Khaimah’s city-centre fish market.

Businessmen in the UAE say Melnichenko, who denies affiliations to the Kremlin, held meetings there in April, but the tycoon has since returned to Moscow. A representative of Melnichenko, who has been placed under sanctions by the EU and UK as well as Switzerland and Australia, referred questions on the yacht to a lawyer who declined to comment.

UAE authorities in Dubai, Ras al-Khaimah and Abu Dhabi declined to comment.

European officials say they have raised concerns with Emirati counterparts that the UAE could become a financial haven for Russians placed under western sanctions. “We don’t want our allies to become facilitators for the Putin regime,” said one.

The UAE government has said it is maintaining a neutral course through the war, calling for an end to hostilities and providing humanitarian aid to Ukraine. Abu Dhabi, which has developed closer ties with Moscow in recent years, has also assured its allies that sanctions-hit entities will not be able to operate in the UAE. The Gulf monarchy, which has long argued that it is not compelled to enforce other nations’ sanctions, is keen to maintain its historical role as an apolitical territory focused on business.

Thousands of wealthy, non-sanctions-hit Russians have relocated to the UAE to escape economic uncertainty and political instability at home, even though they sometimes struggle to access the financial system. “Big banks are more cautious but smaller banks are offering help to those wishing to relocate. It’s just taking a lot of time,” said a Russian businessman.

Very wealthy Russians generally find financial institutions accommodating. Most of the wealthy elite have second passports from countries that sell nationality, such as Malta or Portugal, which facilitates the opening of new accounts with lenders that are warier of Russian passport holders.

Others have turned to alternative routes, such as cryptocurrencies and hawala, or informal money exchange services. The cost of this service has risen from 1 per cent of the transaction value to 5 per cent since the war broke out as demand surges, said one person aware of the trades.

Many in the UAE see a hypocrisy in western concern over the presence of the yacht and the Russians building new lives there. “So it was OK for London to take all the oligarch money but not for Dubai?” asked one lawyer.

Rolex Big Boat Series (RBBS), the premier racing event on San Francisco Bay since 1964, always delivers big: epic conditions over four days of racing, world-class racecourses managed by a world-class race committee, and memorable parties.

The regatta, hosted by St. Francis Yacht Club (StFYC) in San Francisco from Sept. 11-15, is stacked with Marin talent, including three teams looking to defend their 2023 titles: Marc McMorris (San Rafael) owner/skipper of the Cape 31 M2; John Arens (San Rafael) owner/skipper of J/109 Reverie; Kristin and Ryan Simmons (Sausalito) owners/skipper of J/105 Blackhawk.

StFYC Commodore Chris Perkins, from Mill Valley, has been involved with RBBS for a good portion of the event’s colorful 60 years of competition. He’s fired up for the full-on schedule of events, on and off the water, which have evolved RBBS into one of the nation’s most prestigious racing events.

“The traditional RBBS racing in front of the club over four days is just fantastic,” says Perkins. “If you like big breeze, we’re blessed; there’s nowhere in the world like it. I’ve raced RBBS since the late eighties and I just love the event.”

Back to defend his title in the highly competitive J/105 fleet Simmons says his team’s competitive edge this year will be consistency, starting with his crew. They’ve been actively racing all year as part of the J/105 championship series which runs March through September culminating with Big Boat Series as the final event of the championship season.

“We’re racing with mostly the same team and we’re lucky we have low turnover, we’ve been sailing together a long time and it’s everything, the big difference,” says Simmons. “We’re hoping to be in the mix and have a chance on Saturday and Sunday. On the first two days of the regatta, you can’t win the regatta, but you can definitely take yourself out of contention so sailing smart the first couple of days then on Saturday and Sunday is really where the championship will be won. NeNe (owned and skippered by Tim Russell, Novato) and Niuhi (owned and skippered by Randy Hecht, Tiburon) have been the premier boats in the most recent regattas but multiple J105s have won RBBS in the last 10 years; we have three North American champions racing in the fleet and a multitude of RBBS winners. It’s a pretty deep field and that’s what we’re in it for.”

Russell has been involved in the J105 class for more than 20 years, formerly owner of Aquavit and since 2019, NeNe. He’s been trailing Blackhawk in recent editions of RBBS, placing second in 2018 and is eager to take home a RBBS first place. He’ll be racing with his usual crew of the past few seasons and the addition this year of Bill Melbostad (Tiburon) who will be trimming main and calling tactics. Russell is currently leading the local J/105 fleet in the 2024 class championship series and will be a serious podium contender.

“The Bay is just the perfect venue for the J105 – it’s an awesome sailing boat for San Francisco and that is what keeps the fleet strong here,” says Russell. “I think there are maybe 10 boats in the fleet that can win a race but there are probably five who can win a regatta. I think the key is that you are not going to get a good start every single time and you have to be able to recover from a bad start; you have to turn what may have been a 12th into a fourth or fifth. It’s super frustrating not having won RBBS but you have to take chances, and I usually approach every regatta being very conservative; in Big Boat you have to gamble.”

Arens has been active on his J109 this summer, including one design racing his boat for the first time, which he notes improved his team’s game immensely.

“The big adventure for us this year was taking the boat down to So Cal for a couple of regattas including Long Beach Race Week which was the Pacific Coast Championship for J/109s, and which we won,” says Arens. “It absolutely upped our game – we had to get used to being around a lot of boats at the start line, windward/leeward marks etc. It really put an emphasis on execution.”

Reverie took third in the recent Swiftsure regatta, considered the dress rehearsal for RBBS, and Arens is looking forward to any surprises that may await in this week’s RBBS.

“Racing in ORC is always a new challenge because you don’t know who you will be racing against year over year so it always feels new. The RBBS competition is super tight and we feel like we are measuring ourselves against the best sailors out there…and we love the rum parties! Our dock assignment at StFYC this year puts us next to Merlin which is really cool; it is a boat I’ve admired since I was a 10-year-old kid when my grandfather was doing the ’77 Transpac.”

Quantum Sails will be hosting Daily Weather Briefings ay 7:30 a.m. every race day. All sailors are invited to tune in for the forecast from experts at Sailflow Weather and to hear local knowledge about San Francisco Bay conditions and currents. Racing is set to begin September 12, at 11 a.m. local time for most classes and 1 p.m. for the Classics.
