Wake to panoramic views in the master suite and head down to the ‘beach house’ for some early morning indulgence. How about a fresh juice and massage by the gently lapping water, followed by a stint in the steam room? Meanwhile, everyone has gathered in the main deck lounge for a delicious breakfast. O’PTASIA’s interior design is masculine yet warm, with soft greys, browns and creams accented by colourful modern art.

If you fancy a bird’s eye view of the area, take a helicopter trip straight off the bow to a historical site or local vineyard. Alternatively, visit the bridge deck’s gym for a workout before enjoying a leisurely morning in the pool, with its surrounding sun pads offering stunning views of the anchorage.

A BBQ lunch is served at the sun deck’s shaded table, with the crew providing freshly made cocktails at the bar. With everyone re-energised, it is time to hit the water, and O’PTASIA has an impressive range of toys. Jetskis, jetsurfs, wakeboards, SeaBobs, dinghies, inflatables; you name it, they have it. For children and less mobile guests, the hydraulic swim ladder is handy for easy water access. Or those who want some quiet time can make their way to the sky lounge for a movie on the state of the art entertainment system.

Afternoon tea is served on main deck aft, with its comfortable sofas easily fitting everyone to share tales of the day’s fun so far, and then it is time to change for dinner. O’PTASIA has a very flexible arrangement of 10 well-appointed guest cabins for 12, including eight doubles and two twins, located on the desirable main and upper decks, with a further twin available for staff. The master suite features a large walk in wardrobe and private office, while the VIP suite has a walk in wardrobe and adjoining cinema. All of the guest cabins feel spacious and they all benefit from fantastic views through large windows.

As evening draws in, enjoy an atmospheric sundowner at the bar of the ‘beach house’ by the water’s edge, followed by a delicious al fresco dinner on the upper deck and a magical, intimate film screening under the stars with blankets on the sun deck.

O’PTASIA review

On-Board  O’PTASIA

By Nina Done | 1st Aug 2023

Enjoying a full tour of the 85m (279ft) superyacht O’PTASIA at the 2023 Mediterranean Yacht Show in Greece, YachtCharterFleet went behind the scenes to discover everything about this award-winning goddess of the seas.

Delivered in 2018, the yacht is built in steel and aluminum by Greek yard Golden Yachts to a design by Studio Vafiadis. Scooping the top prize in the power 65m+ category at the Design & Leadership Awards at FLIBS in 2019, it is clear that O’PTASIA is one exceptional yacht.

Booked for charter before she had even left the shed, the award-winning 85-meter superyacht set the new standard for luxury yachting with a raft of state-of-the-art amenities, technical innovations and entertainment options all set within elegant and sophisticated surroundings across her four guest deck levels.

O’PTASIA photo 1

With a brief conceived by Paris Dragnis, founder and chairman of Golden Yachts , long-time collaborator Giorgio Vafiadis turned the plans into reality, working with his son Stefano to style both superyacht O’PTASIA ’s chic interior and striking exterior.

Elegant interiors

From the outside, there is an unmistakable fluidity to the motor yacht 's exterior lines, with clever shaping harnessing her volume and recesses creating the perfect balance to her profile. Her interiors, meanwhile, use a chiaroscuro effect, showcasing a light palette that contrasts harmoniously with dark woods and onyx marble to create an overall tranquil and elegant effect, with a modern, crisp finish.

As we stepped into her grand open-plan main salon with its lofty ceilings the exquisite attention to detail was immediately evident. Using materials from Italy and Greece , among others, this 150-square meter space uses planet-friendly porous lati, glossy ebony and onyx marble to eye-catching effect.

O’PTASIA photo 2

Broken down into three zones, you are greeted with two white sofas facing each other across a glossy table upon entry, with silken-soft carpet caressing your every step. In the center, a horseshoe configuration of sumptuous taupe sofas are contrasted with glossy black coffee tables and glass lamps, with an ebony dining table for 12 positioned further aft. This area is partially hidden behind a wide central console housing a vast recessed TV screen, perfect for cozy nights on board.

optasia superyacht owner

Moving into the guest foyer, hints to the Owner’s playful nature become evident. Nowhere is this better expressed than in the Pink Floyd-inspired guest elevator, with a large neon blue triangle depicting  The Dark Side of the Moon cover art that has become universally recognised.

On a side note, all the artwork on board is hand picked and curated by the Owner's sons, with nothing left to chance. Although the art is varied, there is heavy emphasis on playful Pop art, with mosaics and exquisite tactile pieces beguilingly adorning each space.

This elevator conveniently operates across all guest levels apart from her sundeck, with a separate elevator for the crew, ensuring discreet and top-notch service at all times.

O’PTASIA photo 3

There is also a day head on this main deck level, which is replicated in the same position on every level for convenience to her on board guests. This foyer connects all decks with a stunning illuminated onyx-clad central stairwell that leads down into her guest accommodation and to her upper saloon.

This vast multi-functional space forms the main social heart of her interior, where guests can enjoy everything from movies, games and parties to happy hour, which takes place religiously every day between 8-9pm. On our visit, a crew member was on hand to whip up delicious cocktails of our choosing, accompanied by exquisite hand-made canapes.

optasia superyacht owner

This inviting space plays host to a wide array of seating and is adorned by tactile artwork and sculptures, all adding a playful vibrancy to the ambience. The wide aft glass doors can be opened to create a vast indoor/outdoor space – perfect for entertaining large groups for shoreside functions. Floor-to-ceiling windows add to the harmonious atmosphere while offering stunning views of her surroundings.

Alfresco dining and socialising

Stepping outside, her voluminous beam of nearly 14-meters is clearly on show with a vast deck area, broken up by a large circular dining table, with a central lazy susan feature, and a bank of sofas lining the aft perimeter. We are informed this is the most popular place for charter guests to take their meals, with the deck overhead offering respite from the sun without detracting from the glorious views.

O’PTASIA photo 9

This deck comes alive on charter, with a different event being put on every day. This could be a karaoke session, musical night, themed party, barbeque or even a fireworks extravaganza. The crew also love to make movie keepsakes for the guests, incorporating these event nights, as well as harnessing the yacht’s high-tech drones to film destinations and other itinerary highlights along the way.

optasia superyacht owner

Heading up to her bridge deck, guests will be in raptures over her huge 6-meter swimming pool, where they can also relax and soak up the rays on the surrounding sunpads, with towels and sunscreen conveniently placed in baskets dotted around the perimeter.

O’PTASIA photo 10

On this same level, you’ll find sliding doors leading to a climate-controlled gymnasium kitted out with all the latest techno gym gear for supreme workouts. There is also a personal trainer among her crew, who will be on hand to devise tailored workouts throughout your charter, so no need to break your fitness regime while on board.

O’PTASIA photo 13

Her crowning top deck plays host to an array of seating areas served by a mini bar which doubles as a DJ booth and state-of-the-art sound system making this the perfect hub for parties. There's also a screen projector housed in the ceiling for movie nights under the stars.

Versatile accommodation

Offering a six cabin layout, the majority of her guest cabins are located on her main deck where stunning over-water views can be enjoyed from each cabin. These comprise two doubles and two convertible double/twin cabins, with a vast VIP stateroom located further forward.

Each guest cabin is kitted out with a similar variety of materials used throughout her interiors, including dark ebony woods and onyx marbles. Some of the en suites are decorated in Pentelikon marble, which is the same variety used in the construction of the Parthenon in Athens . Other en suites feature a unique green marble found on the Aegean island of Tinos.

optasia superyacht owner

Her full-beam VIP cabin, meanwhile, boasts a huge walk-in-wardrobe, two TV screens and a wide superking bed. Materials used include beautiful soft leather on her walls and onyx marble for her elegant en suite featuring his and hers sinks and a Jacuzzi bath that is bestowed with glorious sea views.

Accessed via a corridor, a sprawling 105-square-meter master suite can be found on her bridge deck, with a separate private study that can also be used by her guests. Here you’ll find every desired office machine and technology needed to conduct whatever important business you may have while on board.

Overlooking this space is a huge black and white collage in feathers depicting Bridget Bardot by a popular French artist. This whimsical statement piece is truly spectacular and makes you appreciate the mastery of the artist.

optasia superyacht owner

Heading forward, the space opens out to a huge walk-in-wardrobe with enough room to house a fashion show. A valet service is also available to ensure the ladies expensive garments and dresses are treated with the utmost care and attention while on board.

Stepping into the master cabin, you are confronted by the 180-degree views across the bow, with a wide super king bed centrally positioned to take in the glorious vistas.

Meanwhile, the en suite is a vision of warm marble contrasted by dark woods, with separate heads and sinks, and an elegant bath. It's worth noting that each interior area has been designed with the notion that guests may spend up to an hour in each space, and nowhere is this best expressed than in the master bathroom. A marble-clad cocoon of luxury and style.

optasia superyacht owner

The master cabin also offers a private terrace, with direct access to her helideck for convenient door to door transfers. This helipad is certified, however when cruising in Greece it can only be used as a touch-and-go helipad.

Guests can control a variety of settings from Crestron iPad consoles available in each cabin, as well as throughout the yacht. Controls include blackout blinds, lights, temperature and sound systems. They can also access Netflix, Prime, HBO etc. from here, with an additional library of movies available at the touch of a button.

The yacht has also recently had Starlink Maritime installed, ensuring fast and consistent internet and download speeds wherever you cruise.

Standout beach club

Her beach club is where this yacht really shines, with access either via external dual steps to her swim platform or from her main salon. This huge area encompasses a large central bar for refreshments during the day.

O’PTASIA photo 17

Her beach club also plays host to two massage rooms, with dedicated on-board masseuses on hand to deliver heavenly treatments all day long. Meanwhile, guests have the additional option of a sauna/steam room, with a convenient shower and day head opposite.

Guests have an additional casual dining option here as well, which offers beautiful views in a more informal setting.

With sumptuous sofas adorning the area, this is a prime space for relaxation where guests can enjoy sea-level views. Opportunities to relax continue on the wide swim platform, where curvy chaise longues can be deployed for guests wishing to soak up the rays. A recessed swim ladder can also be extended into the water for easy access to the warm Mediterranean seas.

optasia superyacht owner

The beach club is also equipped with the latest water sports gear, including seabobs, an electric foiling board and array of inflatables, with a choice of tenders stored out of sight in a garage further forward and launched separately from a side terrace.

These include a custom 9.75-meter Onda limo tender with high-end entertainment system and an open teak swim and boarding platform, as well as a custom Chris Craft tender, both capable of speeds of over 40 knots across the water.

O’PTASIA photo 18

With her vast array of crowd-pleasing amenities, luxurious interiors and 29 crew serving 12 guests, yacht charters on board O’PTASIA are guaranteed to be nothing short of spectacular.

MY OPtasia Superyacht Stories 1200x800

One of the largest yachts available for charter and featuring an award-winning design by Studio Vafiadis, it’s certainly not hard to see why.

Made for charter from day one, O’Ptasia comes with an outdoor cinema, a spacious gym and a huge beach club complete with hammam, massage room and sauna.

Up to 12 guests are accommodated onboard across 10 spacious cabins. The owner’s suite is a particular highlight and spans 85 square metres with private panoramic views. Just as impressive is the 95 square metre VIP cabin, located on the main deck, as well as four double cabins and one twin cabin on the main deck.

MY OPtasia Superyacht Stories 1200x800 21

The Captain

Captain Vangelis Berdos commenced his ocean career more than two decades ago on board motor tankers before completing a captain stint on the Hellenic Navy’s Ferry Ios. He has extensive experience helming M/Ys Sapphire and O’Neiro and running M/Y Suncoco for eight years. Trilingual in English, Greek and German, Captain Vangelis prides himself on ensuring that your every need and desire is met while on board and in his charge. His interests include martial arts, kart racing, sailing and watersports.

The Experience

The experience of O’Ptasia revolves around the finer things in life. A touch-and-go helipad ensures seamless adventures at sea, while there’s plenty to enjoy on board. She comes fully equipped with a host of exciting water toys, including a custom 9.75 metre limo tender, 6 metre Novurainia catamaran, an 8 metre Chris Craft tender and a range of personal watercraft, towables and inflatables for the whole family to enjoy.

MY OPtasia Superyacht Stories 1200x800 20

With O’Ptasia’s crew of 29 having extensively travelled the Mediterranean, you are assured of always dropping anchor in the best spots. “In my opinion,” says the captain, “Greece and the southern coast of Turkey are two of the best cruising destinations in the world. There you can find tranquil bays, natural parks and ancient ruins, all within just a few miles of one another.”

When not enjoying the treasures of the Mediterranean coast, life on board is everything you could want and more. One of O’Ptasia’s highlights is undeniably the vast beach club complete with a bar, oversized seating areas and a full spa experience, including a massage room, sauna and steam room. There’s also a fully-equipped gym and an outdoor cinema for movie nights under the stars.

The Cuisine

Born and raised in Greece, Chef Valentina Argyropoulou studied culinary art in Athens before working in high-end restaurants across Europe. Her signature style is fresh, seasonal, and traditional with a twist. “I prefer cooking with seasonal ingredients to create the perfect dish - I always go to the local markets for fresh products,” she says.

Bringing her Greek heritage into her menus is not just about Mediterranean flavours and fresh ingredients, however. For Chef Argyropoulou, it’s all about creating food with heart and soul. “My mother taught me that through food, you could express your feelings and make people around you happier,” she explains. “Food creates memories. I love the opportunity to meet so many different people and cultures on board and to create these memories through my plates.”

Recalling one of her favourite culinary experiences on board, Chef Argyropoulou describes a dessert to remember. “One of my signature dishes is the Chocolate Sphere filled with chocolate mousse, Caramelia Valrhona, and berries. The hot chocolate is poured over the top, melting the sphere right in front of the guests!”

Charter yacht of the week: Golden Yachts’ 85m O’Ptasia

Each week we place a spotlight on one of the world’s finest superyachts for charter. This week, BOAT steps aboard 85-metre O’Ptasia in Greece to discover why she is such a popular vessel.

O'Ptasia was already booked for charter before she had the chance to leave the shed. This does well to capture the level of anticipation surrounding Golden Yachts ' former flagship being on the charter market. Now, more than five years down the line, O’Ptasia remains a highly popular charter yacht, boasting vast deck spaces, contemporary interiors, and a toy box brimming with an excellent assortment of activities, fit for the discerning charterer.

Her itineraries are concentrated, though not limited to the Mediterranean, and during the summer months, she has been spotted visiting the likes of Capri, Montenegro, Monaco and the Aegean. But in the winter she can also head over to the Caribbean. BOAT steps aboard during the Mediterranean Yacht Show in Nafplion, where she was the largest vessel on show; dwarfing onlookers and the ancient scenery around her.

Key features

She was delivered in 2018 as Golden Yachts' largest yacht, though she has now been outstretched by the 94.6-metre O'Pari . Technically speaking, this was a remarkable achievement for Golden Yachts – surpassing comfort standards, moving up the size level and instructing a highly successful design that calls into the needs of charter guests.

She has a clean well-proportioned profile. Her interiors are modern, with crisp lines and eye-catching details. But it was charter guests’ preferences that informed many of the design decisions, resulting in wide open spaces, a calming, neutral colour palette and a stream of spaces for entertaining.

The main saloon is a grand space, one large, open-plan room with two separate seating areas containing white leather sofas, black coffee tables and glass lamps. The yacht has ebony cabinetry installed, inlaid with stainless steel details. A dining area is set at the forward end of the saloon, and a complementary ebony dining table is centred with backlit, honey-toned onyx.

Accommodation on board is for 12 guests, but she boasts 10 cabins meaning that all guests will have plenty of space to relax. Each of the guest cabins feature eucalyptus walls and grey joinery, while most have walk-in wardrobes.

Guest bathrooms have been designed with Aegean flair, decorated in Pentelikon marble (which was used in the construction of the Parthenon in Athens) and a green marble found on the Aegean Island of Tinos.

The art on board is a feast for the eyes and an important factor in O'Ptasia's characterful design. Pop art, mosaics and textured pieces adorn the hallways. There is also an impressive installation in the lift in the form of a glowing purple triangle. A second lift can also be found on board that’s hidden from view, dedicated for crew use.

Why is O’Ptasia the perfect charter yacht?

There isn’t much guests could want that O'Ptasia does not already have on board. From a touch-and-go helipad to a DJ booth, she is a true entertainer. Out on deck, a guest could collapse almost anywhere and find a sunpad there to break the fall. Her charter itinerary tends to be devised to capture summer in the Med and the exterior spaces certainly reflect that. Her sundeck has a Jacuzzi aft as well as an outdoor cinema for movie nights under the stars.

O'Ptasia is a top choice for self-care fans and fitness fanatics who wish to stick to the fitness routine. Her beach club is a wellness centre at sea, home to a steam room, Hammam and massage room, with sun loungers positioned right at the water's edge. It also has plenty of space for soaking up the sun before sliding into the water. The touch-and-go helipad on the foredeck can double as a yoga studio, perfect for reconnecting with the elements and finding some zen during the charter.

What’s special about O’Ptasia?

Her layout has been remarkably well considered for a variety of situations. For example, a twin cabin is positioned next to the master to help guests who want to have their children or a chosen assistant close at hand.

With a crew of 29, it’s not a surprise to report that guests are remarkably well looked after. Although you wouldn’t necessarily know it, as the spaces have been designed with discreet passageways and access. Being cared for but in no way overbearing is an important balance that the crew on board O’Ptasia seems to take in their stride. Moments after stepping on board, guests will be treated with a continuous stream of delicious bites, smoothies, and cocktails, along with decadent meals and even a massage, courtesy of the onboard therapist.

The list of water toys on board is certainly extensive, with Sea Bobs, inflatables, Jet Skis, kayaks and fliteboards among much else. Charter guests can also bank on travelling to the yacht in style on board O’Ptasia’s eight-metre Chris Craft tender and 10-metre custom limo tender.

O’Ptasia is available to charter with Atalanta Golden Yachts with a weekly rate from €900,000.

Sailing yachts like Mike Lynch's are 'unsinkable bodies', CEO of boat manufacturing firm says

Bayesian superyacht which sank off Italy is an "unsinkable" vessel, Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, said.

Vessels like Mike Lynch's stricken superyacht are "unsinkable", according to the chief executive of the firm which makes and sells them.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, told Sky News there are no flaws with the design and construction of the Bayesian superyacht which capsized in a storm off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, on Monday.

Five bodies were found by divers on Wednesday - taking the number of confirmed dead to six.

The Italian Sea Group also owns the firm that built British tech tycoon Mr Lynch's Bayesian, and Mr Costantino said the vessels "are the safest in the most absolute sense".

News of the sinking left CEO of The Italian Sea Group Giovanni Costantino in ‘sadness on the one hand and disbelief on the other’.

"Being the manufacturer of Perini [boats], I know very well how the boats have always been designed and built," he said.

"And as Perini is a sailing ship... sailing ships are renowned to be the safest ever."

He said their structure and keel made them "unsinkable bodies".

Mr Costantino said news of the sinking "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other".

"This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact," he said.

It is understood Italian prosecutors investigating the incident are continuing to hold interviews with the survivors.

On Tuesday they questioned the captain for more than two hours to help reconstruct what happened and provide useful technical details.

Four British inspectors are also in Porticello and have begun a preliminary assessment of events.

It is understood they will look at all relevant aspects of the incident, including the design, stability, and operation of the vessel. They will also examine the effects of the weather conditions experienced.

Twenty-two people were on board the vessel, 15 of whom were rescued - including Briton Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter Sofia.

Divers will resume efforts on Thursday morning to bring ashore a body they found earlier. One more person remains missing.

Bayesian superyacht builder sacks lawyers over legal action against Mike Lynch’s widow

24 September 2024, 09:14

Facebook share

By Danielle de Wolfe

The builders of the ill-fated Bayesian superyacht have sacked their legal team after a lawyer for the firm filed legal action against Mike Lynch’s widow without their permission.

Listen to this article

A legal filing in a Sicilian court raised eyebrows last week after court papers revealed the boatbuilder was demanding up to £186 million from the tech billionaire's grieving widow.

The papers expressed the firm's intention to sue the crew and the tech tycoon’s widow, for damages following the boat's sinking for 'repetitional damage'.

The Italian Sea Group (TISG), which specialises in manufacturing superyachts , denied "authorising" their lawyer to file the case - with the firm adding shortly after that it had been instructed to withdraw it immediately.

On Monday, the group said: “The documents relating to the summons have already been physically withdrawn.”

The filing followed controversial comments made by Giovanni Costantino, chief executive of The Italian Sea Group, who previously blamed the crew for the sinking.

Mr Constantino, who had previously claimed the yacht was "unsinkable", alleged the crew had left doors open, allowing the Bayesian to flood and passengers to “die like mice in a cage” following the disaster.

“Everything that was done reveals a very long summation of errors,” he told the Corriere della Sera newspaper.

“The people should not have been in the cabins, the boat should not have been at anchor.”

Lawyers working for the Italian shipyard filed the initial writ on September 20 - a month on from the sinking of the Bayesian superyacht.

The boat sank off the coast of Sicily in a freak storm on early on August 19, killing seven people on board including Lynch, 59, and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah.

15 people survived the sinking and were rescued in a life raft nearby - including Lynch's wife and a young baby.

The lawsuit claimed TSIG had already lost business due to the sinking, citing a renowned fashion house that had retracted plans linked to the company's yachts.

TISG said in a statement after news of the lawsuit emerged: “The Italian Sea Group… strongly denies the claims published in La Nazione regarding a legal action following the Bayesian tragedy.

"Although TISG has given a generic mandate to the lawyers named in the article, no legal representative of the company has examined, signed or authorised any writ of summons.”

The papers reportedly name James Cutfield, the yacht's New Zealand captain, and two other crew members.

Camper & Nicholsons, the yacht management company responsible for hiring the crew, were also reportedly named, according to Italian newspaper La Nazione.

Others included Revtom, the Isle of Man-based company that owned the Bayesian.

The firm is controlled by Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, 57, who survived the tragedy.Bacares was among the 15 passengers who survived after the 56-metre British-flagged luxury yacht went down near Sicily, in the Mediterranean on August 19.
